EXCLUSIVE: IFC is wrapping up U.S. distribution on The Trip, the Michael Winterbottom road comedy that stars comics Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they tour eateries in Northern England. Winterbottom turned the humorous results into a 6-part BBC miniseries, and the new movie, which premiered at Toronto, is culled from that marathon but features some exclusive footage. I’m told by sources on both coasts that IFC will get the film, which was produced by Winterbottom’s longtime collaborator, Andrew Eaton. IFC has been on an acquisitions tear lately, landing the James Gunn-directed Super, the Barry Blaustein-directed Peep World, and finding a home for Tom Six’s The Human Centipede Part 2 (Full Sequence), whose premise–mad doc catches victims, links their digestive systems together to create a human centipede–is hands down the most disturbing horror movie premise I’ve ever heard of.

Great news! I’m glad IFC is picking this up. I’m up for anything by the prolific, protean and pissed off Michael Winterbottom. The Claim / Kingdom Come, Wonderland, I Want You and Code 46 are all highly underrated. With Coogan and Brydon along, you can expect more than a cock and bull story. I’m currently enjoying Rob Brydon as the closeted uncle in Gavin and Stacey.
Actually, I think eating one’s way across Northern England is a more disturbing premise than HUMAN CENTIPEDE.
I saw the film–hilarious. It’s cut from hours of improvised dialogue and impressions, so what we see comes off as natural, comedy gold. It’s also a great postcard for the true beauty of the British countryside–makes you want to visit the places that they stay.
Watch for duelling impressions of Michael Caine, and of the many ways one can say the Bond line: “Come come Mr. Bond, you take pleasure in killing just as much as I do” If you liked the closing credits of Cock and Bull story, this movie is them running with that idea…banter and competition while on a road trip
