EXCLUSIVE… UPDATED: File this one under tantalizingly possible. James Cameron and Sony Pictures Entertainment are exploring the very real possibility that he will direct Angelina Jolie in a 3D version of Cleopatra, an SPE adaptation of the Stacy Schiff book Cleopatra: A Life. Jolie is attached and anxious to make the movie. Scott Rudin, who acquired the book, is producer. The talks are serious but by no means conclusive yet. Meanwhile, Deadline’s Nikki Finke reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chair Amy Pascal decided to fast-track its PG-13 and 3D Cleopatra project after screenwriter Bran Helgeland wrote what was is being described as a “brilliant script deserving of epic treatment” all about “what the Romans took from Egypt”.
In addition, Pascal wants to own the Angelina Jolie franchise the same way it owns the franchises of Adam Sandler and Will Smith because “she’s a real star who can open a movie by herself” and “she knows she was born to play this part” because it’s the “greatest female heroine” that ever lived. Pascal is hoping for a start date in 2011 but has acknowledged that “it won’t be cheap” and is calling this her Gone With The Wind epic. Indeed, a project of this size and scope is a huge risk for any studio, especially considering how much attention will be focused on the production and the last time the story of Cleopatra was made into a movie. The Egyptian queen got her big screen closeup in the 1963 film with Elizabeth Taylor in the title role. Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed the film, which started with a $2 million budget that ballooned to $44 million (the equivalent of over $300 million today) not the least because Taylor became ill and almost died. The production nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox, despite being the year’s highest grossing pic with $26 million. However, with James Cameron as director, he has the ability to produce a huge worldwide spectacle where every penny will be on the big screen. He has several of his own projects in the works, including a title called The Dive, but there is no other outside project he is looking at but this one as he develops the Avatar sequel.
Stacy Schiff’s biography peels away the layers to reveal the true Cleopatra, a much more interesting woman than the Hollywood version, and, as it turns out, a formidable queen after all, according to reviews. A Pulitzer Prize-winning American nonfiction author and guest columnist for The New York Times, Schiff digs up astonishing and rare facts about the queen that could make the film into an entirely new story. Schiff herself has said about Jolie as Cleoptra, ”physically, she’s the perfect look, and is hoping for Brad Pitt to play Mark Antony (just as Liz Taylor’s then lover, Richard Burton, did in the 1963 epic). ”Angelina Jolie radiates grace and power, exactly the qualities that Stacy Schiff finds in her biography of the most intriguing ruler who ever lived,” the book’s publisher, Little Brown’s Michael Pietsch, told reporters.
As for 35-year-old Jolie, she has been a tomb raider and a spy and even a queen (she played Queen Olympias in 2004′s Alexander.) But she has had a lifelong fascination with Cleopatra and has always wanted to play the Queen of the Nile. She once told reporters: “I haven’t done a historical epic of that nature and she’s always been fascinating to me because I feel like, as much of her story has been done big, it’s never been done accurately. Not that any movie can get history perfectly well. There is no universal truth to history in some films, but you can get closer and I feel there’s a lot that has been unexplord about her. But there’s a lot that would have to come together for that to work.” And, as recently as at Sony’s Salt premiere in Hollywood, she told reporters “I would be honored” to play Cleopatra in an upcoming new biopic. “But,” Jolie added, “we haven’t gotten the script yet.” But then Helgeland’s screenplay came in. Scott Rudin bought the rights to the book envisioning Jolie in the role from the very beginning and later acknowledging that Cleopatra “is being developed for and with Jolie”.
Since then, Jolie has been heavily involved in the project. In still another interview, Jolie said, ”I will play it differently to Elizabeth Taylor, but I could never be as lovely as she was. We are trying to uncover the truth about her as a leader and not just a sex symbol which she really wasn’t — she didn’t have many lovers, maybe only two, and they’re men she had children with.” Angelina has said she was stunned by what she learned when she started researching Cleopatra. ”She was misunderstood and her life story was written wrongly. I always thought her life was very glamorous. Then I read her story and found a different side to her – that she was a mother, leader and an intellect who spoke five languages! Her upbringing also reflected her relationship with Rome — all that is much more interesting than what she was summed up to be.”
The Jolie project isn’t the only Cleopatra film to make headlines in recent years. In 2008, director Steven Soderbergh reportedly began developing Cleo, a 3D rock musical version of the Egyptian queen’s story with Catherine Zeta-Jones in mind for the title role. The film fell by the wayside. start it sometime next year
Cameron has done most of his directing at Fox with Titanic and Avatar, and he is hard at work on a sequel to the latter. As a producer, Cameron is making the Shane Salerno-scripted 3D reboot of Fantastic Voyage for Fox, but he is already working off campus, moonlighting at Universal as producer of At the Mountains of Madness, the adaptation of HP Lovecraft that Guillermo del Toro plans to direct in 3D.

At first I said “HUH?” then I thought about it, and as long as he doesn’t write the script, it could be really amazing. He knows how to make his actors look good, he knows what makes for a beautiful location and cinematography…it could work!
How is it that these women who start to pass third base on the chronometer all of a sudden decide to assume the role of an 18 year-old, spoiled, Grecian slut? Angela is older than her father. Good Grief.
Would it not be more appropriate for Hannah Montana to play the role? She could stay in character…Bieber as Marco Antonio, Boy George as Ceasar…..Imagine!
I’m sick of Cleopatra movies and I am sick of Angelina Jolie movies. There must be something else he can do.
Bizarre, but perhaps very Swiss. Will anyone want to see anything but a love story? Dorothy M. Johnson wrote, “When given a choice between the truth and the legend, go with the legend.” Think Robin Hood.
Cleopatra was many things, but i would definitely not call her a slut. She was a very powerful political figure, especially for being a woman in those ages. And as to Angelina Jolie, although she might not be the best actress ever, she is definitely not bad,and her age shouldnt even be a factor because she looks great. And this article has nothing to do with Miley Cyrus or Justin Beiber. Are you really so bitter with your life that you get off by dissing celebrities? Wow.
llyanna, Cleopatra not a slut ?? That’s too funny.. She married one brother, had a child by Caesar and had the other brother killed.. A slut and a murderer.. Too funny.
And, Antony was still married while cavorting with her.
Um, Cleopatra and almost all great women in history have been portrayed as whores, sluts, incessetious or lunatics. Come on people come up with something different. It’s all bs. Thank God someone as charitable and bankable as Angelina is educated enough to do the real Cleopatra some justice and help set history (HIS STORY) straight. And no I don’t hate men. But women ARE equal to men in the eyes of God. And man’s HIStory has spent an eon making sure these women are seen as HERetics.
Cleopatra’s legacy was tarnished by the Roman’s after her death. They set about destroying images of her and scraping her face from the records carved in stone. So you are just parroting the same misinformation about her that has circulated for two millenia.
Yes, she looks great. But wasn’t Cleopatra 17 when she became queen? How revisionist is this film going to be? Good God…

David, I Want To Give You & Others A “Quick History Lesson.” “History Is Written By The Victors.” — Sir Winston Spencer Churchill. If Marc Anthony & Cleopatra Would’ve Won The Battle of Actium Against Octavia (Also Known As Caesar Augustus And He Wasn’t No Sweetheart Himself!) I’m Sure That You Might Be Singing A Different Tune! It’s So Easy To Call Someone Who’s Not Around To Defend Themselves “an 18 year-old, spoiled, Grecian slut.” Cleopatra Wanted An Independant Egyptian Empire & Octavian Wanted To Dominate Egypt! In The End, Octavia Made Sure That He Had “All The Marbles” After He Had Vanquished His Competitors Who Were Looking For The Title Of “Caesar!” Also, That’s How “Caesar” Is Spelled, Not ” Ceasar!”
will be about as good as Troy and Alexander. For some reason I doubt cleo was a tall white girl and marc anthony was a ugly bi-sexual. Not really much like Brad Pitt. Really sick of those two.
I luv Ang, but she is too old to play Cleo who was by all account still a teenager when this movie takes place. If they want hisorical accuracy she needs to step aside. This movie won’t even shoot for another year and half by which time she’ll be nearly 37, 20 years older than Cleo. C’mon… How about Nikki Reed or Demi Lavato?
Cleopatra died at age 39. You know, when she committed “suicide by snake” to avoid having the Romans parade her corpse down the streets of Rome.
I don’t know where so many people here are getting this misinformation about some tween queen. But if you really want the Teen Steam version of Cleo go ahead; shine on, you crazy diamond.
I have to agree with those who suggest Megan Fox for this.
Who really cares!
I would care it it were… POINT BREAK in 3D!
Bring in Keanu as Marc Anthony! I hope James Cameron casts himself as Julius Caeser (he has the ego to for that part).
Am I the only one who is sick and tired of Angelina? Are there no other actresses? Give her a rest!Same applies to Atlas Shrugged.
I am very sick of her too. She is a no-class selfish person. I wont waste my money
What’s the deal w/ that project?
Anybody?
Yes, Toni. I am sick of her, too. The real question is – who is the audience for Cleopatra? And will they want to see it with AJ in the lead? I would like to see a Cleo movie if it’s appropriately cast, and that means no Angelina.
Awesome!
Cleopatra was renowned for being an initiate in a sex cult (eat your heart out Aleister Crowley) who is reported to have fellatiated 100 Romans in single sitting!
In 3D this should make quite the spectacle.
The modern world is so uneducated as to what really goes on. Do you think the elite have change one lick?
The elite have two marks … pederasty and psychopathy.
Welcome to hell idiots!!
I’m happy so long as he never contemplates a sequel to that POS Avatar. Boy that was crap.
FTA: “Schiff herself has said about Jolie as Cleopatra, “physically, she’s the perfect look”
Really? How so? We don’t know what Cleopatra looked like, but supposedly she had a very big nose (look her up in Wikipedia). She poisoned her enemies, experimenting with different poisons. This is pure Hollywood fairy tale wishful thinking.
Also, reported to have had red hair. There is a bust of her that Caesar put in a Temple of Venus, to the chagrin of many Romans.
HA! if he can get it out in 2013, it will be a perfect 50th anniversary thing! 50 years after the world’s most expensive movie was released (speaking in dollars adjusted for inflation), eclipsed on its 50th anniversary by an even MORE expensive version of the same movie! Think of all the free publicity Cameron would get with that!
I get the Russell Crow thing. His current build presence is definitely that of Burton in Cleopatra.
Cleopatra was black. How about that for accuracy, filmmakers?
“Cleopatra” is about intrigue, not action. I hope Cameron passes.
Cameron is amazing with female characters. One of rare directors who enjoys writing strong female roles for his movies. Sarah Conor, Ellen Ripley (yes, she wasn`t Cameron`s creation but he turned her into a Girl Power icon), Neytiri, Rose, all great strong women.
Cameron turned Ripley into a caricature. A JOKE from the previous installment
The only reason there is an Alien franchise is because of Cameron and the way he built her chartacter. She was nothing special in Alien, it took Aliens to fully flesh out the character.
Cameron always finds a way to project his inner woman on to the big screen (*wink), however in this case, Cleopatra is neither strong or a heroine. While we like to romanticize that she was this strong female who commanded Julius Caesar and Marc Antony’s attention, she and Egypt were merely tools in the schemes of Rome.
Oh how wrong you are!
Cameron has made great strong female characters, but are any of them really complex? Cleopatra is one of the most complex female historical figures ever – 2000 years later people are still debating what her motivations were! Cameron’s world is very black and white, and Cleopatra is all about nuance. Additionally, a Cleopatra movie will have maybe twenty minutes of visual fireworks – Cleopatra’s entrance into Rome, her barge’s entrance in Tyre, Actium – and the other two to three hours are ACTING. Is James Cameron capable of directing like that?
Ripley yes
Sarah Connor yes
Kate Winslet yes
So yes.
For those who don’t know, Cameron has a history of lifting his material from other writers. He’s been sued twice for theft of material – once for Terminator, a suit he lost, and now for Avatar, which appears to have been pulled from a 1997 sci-fi novel called “Tale of the Blue Crows”. That litigation is ongoing.
Definitely a hack.
Cleopatra uhn, well if you are very observant you will know that cleopatra is not the way you think it is,you might not reeeeally understand where i am going to..
Elizabeth Taylor isn’t dead….yet! She will be after hearing about this.
Um…it doesn’t say Elizabeth is dead now, she became very ill during the production of her movie and almost died then. Learn to read…
Is this so he can shout, “I’m the King of the Nile?”
Good grief!!! Somebody feed me the poison right now.
No! It should be ‘hand me the asp.’
I daresay *someone* deserves to be handed their asp over this.
Why can’t he go back to unknowns for actors. I’m tired of
top directors only working with top actors.
Remember Terminator
I quess he has lost his confidence.
Hater…
He fought tooth and nail to get Sam Worthington in Avatar, which, you have to remember, was shot LONG before he was recognizable at all. Who else in that film was any sort of a start other than Weaver?
And it kinda made 2.7billion.
owned
Please..
Cameron could’ve put a refrigerator in ‘Avatar’ instead of Sam Worthington – you wouldn’t have noticed a difference at all in performance and the movie would’ve still made $2.7Bn
That was funny.
Yeah. You just got superowned there Danny.
I second that about directors avoiding unknowns. Too many Hollywood directors act as if they can ONLY cast main characters from a very tight cadre of top-tier performers, say, the 20 or 30 heaviest hitters, the “proven bets.” I suppose that the practice is understandable from a financial perspective…sort of like writing an insurance policy that guarantees SOME kind of return on a studio’s investment in a film. Still, I hate to see those few dozen big earners hogging up all the best roles. I especially hate it when a production tosses several of those big names together in the same movie like flavors of ice cream that don’t necessarily go together. (“The Departed” or “Ocean’s Eleven,” anyone?) Who cares if a lot of lead roles are underserved because the “anointed ones” chosen for those parts just aren’t the best fits for the particular characters? I guess only marquee power counts. Safe bets make bean counters happy, and clearly cost accountants are the REAL powerhouses in Hollywood. (Thank the bean counters for all those quickly churned-out sequels, too.)
Blame the producers. Elite actors have legal representation, and they won’t stand for being sidelined now that they are elite.
As Obama would say “Haven’t the made enough money?”
The guy that plays Mark Antony is a relative unknown. He wont be after that World of Warcraft thing.
Hear hear, Vince. Where were you during Michael Richards’ persecution?
Reading that Universal was pressured into changing “Gay” trailer. What about that content in the movie itself?
Liz and Richard – Big shoes to fill.
THESE TWO (JOLI & PITT) CAN FILL THOSE SHOES….AS A MATTER OF FACT ….IF TAYLOR & BURTON HAD BIOLOGICAL CHILDREN TOGETHER….THEY PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN AS BEAUTIFUL LOOKING AS JOLI & PITT..
MUST ADD: BURTON WAS AN …OFF THE CHARTS FANTASTIC ACTOR ….IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN….
yawn, no thanks
Will Cleopatra be on a boat that sinks, or on a planet at war with blue giant talking donkeys?
Ha hahahahaaa….excellent!
Funny thing is Jolie is a stunning woman, but Cleopatra was well known not to be very attractive at all…Such is the ignorance of most who follow popular culture that they won’t know this to be.
Exactly Jay, most people dont realise that Cleopatra was barely 5 foot tall and not considered beautiful. But when has historical or even facts ever mattered to Cameron? Titanic was rife with historical inaccuracies and problems and no one said a word not even the historians. I wrote Cameron off years ago when he turned his nose up on sequals.
Jimmy Cameron couldn’t be more wrong for this. The only reason he’s interested is because he wants to build a scaled down model of the Pyramids. Cleopatra herself would be his last priority. Keep him the hell away from this.
LOL @ scaled down model of the Pyramids!
Wow, two EXCELLENT reasons to NOT see this film!!!
Uhh, hell no, but this project will stink anyway no matter who directs it – so who really cares?
I’m also sick of whitebread Jolie playing ethnic characters rather than giving the part to ethnic actors.
Take your swollen-lipped ass elsewhere
right on girl!!!
Cleopatra was a Greek. She was a Ptolemy. Why wouldn’t AJ be able to play her?
Because certain obviously jealous women who get tired of being compared to Angelina Jolie would prefer to find any reason to dismiss her and make her go away.
It’s called MEGAN FOX Syndrome.
lol!
I like Megan Fox and can’t stand Angelina Jolie. Please don’t try to say that women who don’t like Angelina Jolie are jealous of her beauty. There are plenty of reasons to dislike her and your ignoring that sounds like you are trying to find a reason to DISMISS us.
my my what a colored racist you are. maybe there isn’t any colored actress who has the beauty, the draw, the impressive talent, the star power, the screen presence to really WOW the audience in an epic film like this one. It’s not only about skin color. remember what Martin tried to teach you, “content of character” or in this case, TALENT and marketabililty rather than the size of an actresses’ lips or the creamy porcelain whiteness of her skin is what really matters.
“Colored Racist” what kind of empty and backwards person would make such a stupid comment, I guess this is the part where African American’s are supposed to get all angry and start hurling similar epitaphs, nah I pass.
As far as Cleopatra being Greek…(Give me a break).
>>As far as Cleopatra being Greek…(Give me a break).<<
What do you mean? She was Greek. Alexander the Great conquered Egypt. After he died and his empire broke up, his general Ptolomy made himself king of Egypt. The Greeks/Macedonians formed the ruling class in Egypt thereafter, speaking Greek and maintaining greek culture. The Ptolomy's did not intermarry with "the natives". Cleopatra was a direct descendent of Ptolomy and she was wholly Greek in upbringing, in outlook and by descent.
Or maybe its just that Cleo wasn’t black?
Yea and Hollywood makes certain it stays that way. I’ve seen beautiful black actresses/models in some commercials, where the camer only focuses on them for a brief momemnt, and that’s the last I ever see of them. There are beautiful ones amongst us, that I know and have met, but you think they want to put them in the Biz? Hollywood came to my town in the mid-seventies and who’d they pic for a movie…the fattest, ugliest, blackest family and females they could find for the movie they were shooting. This is a true story.
@cordelia:
“colored”?
Back to the Jim Crow ’50 w/ you where you obviously belong.
GFY.
Jessica Alba played Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four, about as aryan-looking a character as they come, so I think we’re even.
Uh would have preferred if Alba just had to play Sue they would have let her have her natural look instead of that freakish thing they did with her eyes and hair. Ew…
That’s true. Alba looked ridiculous with the dye job and quite unnatural given her coloring.
So, ONE half Latino/half white person plays a fictional character who’s been white, and that is enough to even out the playing field even though, for DECADES, Hollywood has and CONTINUES to whitewash roles, continues to intentionally cast white people to play Asians, Latinos, Persians, Blacks, Indians and so on?
Minorities have a long way to go, have to receive a large number of historically white roles, to even come close to receiving the favoritism whites have over the decades.
So many white people say race shouldn’t be a factor in casting, and by that, they really mean that whites should pretty much get all the roles and minorities should only play side characters, or walk in the background while white actors do their thing.
Yeah….. uh, didn’t Wil Smith play uber-white character “James West” in “The Wild Wild West?” Don’t get too self righteous there; it’s just a movie (that will be historically inaccurate as many posters have already pointed out).
whitebread Jolie? Errr oki. She is part Indian, part Czech, part French and I don’t know what else. If that is whitebread then sure
I say this an African American woman – I really hate ignorant ass people who don’t know that Cleopatra was ethnically a Greek. Jolie is part Slavic on her father’s side, French-Canadian and Iroquois on her mother’s side. She’s not Greek, but she’s not your average white girl either. Your comment that Jolie isn’t ethnic enough is especially hilarious considering that in her modeling days she struggled to get good jobs because she was told her looks is TOO ETHNIC. My how the worm has turned.
Okay, everyone. It is true that the Ptolemy family was of Greek origin. They intermarried, however, with the Egyptian populace. So Cleo, though she was Greek, was also mixed with Egyptian blood. The Egyptians themselves, were a mixed race people, so in the end – what does it any of it mean?
No actually she wasn’t. The Ptolemies were hugely inbred. Her mother and father were full brother and sister. She was Greek.
That’s why she married her brother. Had to maintain the Royal bloodline.
They intermarried. So much so she probably had eleven toes and turned blue in the cold. Sorry folks who don’t know much about classical civilizations…. Cleopatra was Greek to her marrow.
So, you feel that she shouldn’t play the part of a Greek woman? Did you think Cleopatra was Egyptian?
Try opening a history book.
The Cleopatra under discussion was the result of a long tradition of inbreeding among the Ptolmic dynasty, which was Medo-Persian in origin. Ptolmey was one of Alexander the Great’s four primary generals who divided the known would between them upon Alexander’s death. The common depiction of Cleopatra as dark skinned and dark haired are incorrect. She would most certainly have been fair complected and probably blue eyed with blond or slightly brunette/reddish hair. Not only did the Ptolmic dynasty not intermarry with the subjugated Egyptians, but until Cleopatra, almost all refused to learn to read and speak Egyptian.
Cleopatra the seventh was an ethnicly European Greek woman. Its not like we are talking about something of which no historical records exist. The Ptolemeis seized control of Egypt 300 years before and they exclusively married their own blood relatives as did all royalty in Egypt. Cleopatra was the first Ptolamy in their 300 year dynasty that could even speak Egyptian.
The Egyptians themselves were not black either although there was a single black pharaoh. He like the Ptolemis was an invader and was driven out by the Egyptians. This was more than a thousand years before the time of Cleopatra.
Angelia Jolie is a little old to play Cleopatra. She did not even live to the age Angelina is now but I think its not like this is some kind of perfectly accurate movie. Its Hollywood.
Angleina Jolie is 35 – Cleopatra took her life when she was 39.
It’s been done…..alot.
Will Cleopatra be black or white this time? I would like to see Zoe Saldana as Cleo as I’m sure she would do a fantastic job and has good chemistry with James Cameron.
Cleopatra was not black; she was Macedonian Greek, having descended from Alexander the Great’s General Ptolemy, who ended up with Egypt as his part of Alexander’s empire after Alexander died, becoming the first pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. The marital records of the Ptolemaic Dynasty plainly show that they only married one another, so Cleo was not a woman of color. This is not to say that Zoe Saldana could not do a good job as Cleo, but it seemed as if the question had its origins in a misconception as to Cleo’s ethnicity.
What she was she damn sure didn’t look like a pasty white woman with a tan. Damn the sixe of her lips!
I’m sorry, but have you ever been to Greece? White with a tan is about the right color for a Grecian.
Yes, they married one another but they also had children with native Egyptians, so the family tree was not purely Greek.
Nope sorry… they didn’t marry locals. They married Greeks and only Greeks.
Cleoparta was Greek, so enough with the “she was black”. Alexander the Great conquered Egypt and Cleopatra descends from that Greek/Macedonian line.
As for her looks, hey it’s Hollywood, of course they will pick Jolie over Linda Hunt. No offense to Ms. Hunt.
Why? Because Egypt is on the African continent? You are aware Cleopatra was Greek, right?
She was also part Armenian and Persian (Antiochus/Mithridates), but primarily Macedonian Greek. She was not ugly, but also not classically beautiful. There is a coin that shows she had a prominent nose. My guess is that she looked like Jennifer Grey before the nose job, and not Angelina.
Cleopatra was rumored to be ginger haired as well.
The issue with this film will be of race as in Egypt and to this day BLACK people are treated like slaves there and in the past.
The cast should be a mixture of unknowns but I think someone although not ginger haired but I think regal looking would be Natalie Portman, and she can redeem herself after the Star Wars Prequels, and she is a good enough actress and with more emotional depth than Jolie, I thought Angelina was terrible/adequate in Alexander, and to be honest looking at different actors will be a step forward. Another one no-one has considered would be Julia Roberts, has not done good film for a longtime.
Natalie Portman is an outstanding pick for that role. Short, the right color hair, she’s Israeli.
Personally I’d prefer to see Zoe depict the greatest, most powerful beauty of all time, Nefertiti.
Religious anarchist. Feminist. Ruler. Mother.
Now that’s an epic begging to be told!
Zoe is cute but not beautiful. Paula Patton would be a far better choice, if you want to go in that direction.
I can most definitely see Cameron doing this. The Roman age was a world as nearly as fantastical as Pandora or Middle Earth, and nobody has been able to truly pin-down the relationship between Cleopatra, Mark Cesar, Anthony and Augustus into a film just right. The battle scenes alone would be the price of admission.
Nine comments and no ignorant complaints about how Cleopatra was actually black (and not a big-nosed Ptolemy)? Internet, I am disappoint.
…do some reading and discover that Cleopatra’s family was from northern Africa with Greek blood in their veins..as Greeks look today, with olive toned skin….
Spoke too soon, Hank. See ‘Alex’ two comments above yours.
Russell Crow as Mark Anthony,Oh want that sell Newspapers. and anythings else. Brad and Russell wife should not be anywhere around when these 2 hook up on the set. Let these 2 ,Jolie and Russell Crow do what they do best, let these 2 make movie History. Beside Russell Crow has always reminded me of Richard Burton mole an all. Thanks, everyone wish for this too happen, Elizabeth
pitt is a better actor than crowe
Brad is too much of a pretty boy for this role, Crowe is better….
I think Pitt would be more interesting. We’ve already seen Russell Crowe do the historical epic scene with “Gladiator” AND “Robin Hood”.
Pitt CANNOT act his way out of a paper bag, and I’ve seen no quotes from him arguing otherwise, however as long as he’s not given many lines to read, the audience is fine watching his longing glances fill the bulk of his screen time.
Firstly,
the expression is “out of a wet paper bag”.
Secondly, yes, Pitt can and most certainly has. Have you seen Snatch? 12 Monkeys? The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford? Fight Club? Do I need to keep listing great performances by Pitt?
Thirdly, no. No I do not.
I agree. Pitt cannot act his way out of a “wet” paper bag, as the commenter below says.
He can also list all the movies he wants – Brad Pitt has always been a negligible actor, coasting by on his looks for years. But pretty much people avoid his movies and they don’t make money. Women would rather see his photo (at least once upon a time.)
Russell Crowe is a much better actor than Pitt and I think Hollywood has recognized that by nominating him for “A Beautiful Mind”, “LA Confidential”, and “Gladiator”.
elizabeth parks your comment is very stupid..
jenny respect your opinion but pitt is not a pretty boy, is a great actor and pitt jolie chemistry is perfect. crowe jolie chemistry???
pitt jolie= great box office hit
Mark Hildebrandt of the Warcraft film is playing Mark Antony, and he has been listed in the role for a long time. Hildebrandt is incredibly hot, and Crowe is not in the same league, and he may be hotter than Pitt. Now Hildebrandt and Jolie will have chemistry.
Russell Crowe? He is not up for the role of Mark Antony, it is taken. That is almost funny that Crowe would “Hook up with Jolie on the set.” Didn’t Russell Crowe get someone fired from Robin Hood because he was too fat for her? Mark Hildebrandt is a totally different story.
He is also more masculine looking than Brad Pitt.
You realize the part of Mark Antony has been cast? Mark Hildebrandt from the Warcraft film is playing him. He is about 1k times hotter than Crowe, and as good as Pitt.
FINALLY! An original movie idea from Hollywood! After all these yea…
What?
The last time Jolie played a queen in a movie, she sucked like a hoover. An amazingly bad performance in an amazingly bad film (Alexander). I wonder if she will play Cleopatra with that weird and stupid accent she used in Alexader.
Sorry, Angelina, but the Liz Taylor Cleopatra is considered one of the most historically accurate portrayals (and movies) ever. Just ask the world’s leading Egyptologist Professor Bob Brier a / k / a “Mr. Mummy.” Does everyone also know that this Cleopatra was also a Greek?
Cameron must want to make sure he tops the original’s record-breaking budget overruns
Yeah, but then he has an annoying habit of making movies that once released more often than not EARN the budget, P&A AND any overruns back BIG TIME!!
Especially with the last two.
If they’re gonna spend this much money, Jolie is the best bet for the role and throw in Brad Pitt as Marc Antony. People will see it no matter how crappy it is. Anyways it’s perfect that the tabloid kind and queen of today should play the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton parts.
Please, it’s a James Cameron film, remembervTitanic? it will be good.
Also the link to this article is misleading, Cameron doesn’t want Pitt at all. let’s not forget Pitt’s last Greco-Roman outing as Achilles, and he was considered bad. Pitt has also never played a bi time leader.
It’s already been announced that Mark Hildebrandt is playing Mark Antony, and he can play a leader (King Varian Wrynn-The Warrior King in Warcraft. Hildebrandt is also the leading man of Warcraft and that’s a very high budgeted film.
My point is it really doesn’t matter if Stacey Schiff the authot likes Pitt better, she signed away rights to her book for the film. Cameron apparently thinks Hildebrandt is better for the role. Also dont you think a star as big as Angelina Jolie has a say in her leading ma? If she didn’t like Hildebrandt, and he was the only one listed it would be someone else.
Also Mark Hildebrandt is dating Charlize Theron, so he is probably a lot like Antony.
