EXCLUSIVE: Here’s an early peek at a director’s test done by Dear John and We Are Marshall scribe Jamie Linden for Ten Year, an ensemble feature film he has written about a 10-year high school reunion. The short features such familiar faces as Channing Tatum, Kate Mara, The Hurt Locker‘s Brian Geraghty, and Haylie Duff. Other twentysomething actors who are circling roles in the four other story lines for the feature include Anna Faris, Chris Pratt and Justin Long. The picture is being put together by Twilight Saga producers Temple Hill, and they are currently shopping the director’s test to get financing for Linden to make his directing debut. Temple Hill worked with both Linden and Tatum in Dear John, and Tatum and his 33 And Out partner Reid Carolin have been very involved in the Ten Year effort. I’m told that several financiers and distributors are angling, but that if the right deal doesn’t materialize, Temple Hill may cash flow the picture as it did for the Dan Rush-directed Everything Must Go, the $5 million Will Ferrell-starrer which got a distribution deal with Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Didn’t ABC just cancel this show. Just sayin.
My Generation was an interesting show. I liked it. But this had so much more going for it. I love the tone and I love the emotion. It feels very natural and organic. Let’s see how this style translates into a 90minute film.
Haven’t read the script but this looks dreadful.
This looks and feels like a student film. So are we visually telling the story traditionally, verite, with stills, looking into the lens or some other device that isn’t set up or motivated? Maybe this is edgy because it combines these techniques? Hope the full feature has tilt-shift.
Enough with the visuals–who cares?
I just spent 9 and a half minutes watching this and I don’t care about a single one of these characters.
The only thing I can imagine being worse than this is an actual high school reunion.
Uh, no brainer. Make it. This generation’s big chill
Yeah, great idea. “My Generation: The Movie.” Pretentious.
Oh God. Feaux realism. This is a nauseating hybrid of a middle road reality TV show and a bad Meisner improv class. Lots of pretty faces though. This is no Big Chill.
Meh. As a friend pointed out, Channing Tatum is an acting black hole. Any real talent placed around Channing Tatum automatically gets sucked by from the room by Tatum making any piece he’s in instantaniously dull and stiff. The man can’t act. It baffles me that he keeps getting these headlining roles. He must have a great agent I suppose.
I don’t get the hate for him as an actor. I think he’s actually grown a LOT over the years and has a tremendous natural talent. I think people just SEE him and assume he can’t act, like he’s too “man pretty” or too “footballer”-esque. But hello, anyone remember Brad Pitt? Back in the day he was considered by many to be a “joke” as an actor. Nothing more than a sex symbol trying too hard, right? That’s what everyone said. Now he’s getting Oscar nominations. I say give Tatum a chance. He seems to have a raw talent, and he can’t help it if he’s a beefy GAP model type guy.
I agree that he doesn’t always pick the best roles out there – but I figure Hollywood just wants to bank on those nice abs of his. If you wanna see him act for real, go back to “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” and use that to judge how he might do in the future. I think he just has to get to a point where he leaves teen movies behind (as much as I love satire-remakes like She’s the Man) and choose more quality projects; then you might see a marked improvement.
Really? The short is so friggin’ boring and poorly executed.
Really? This is a director’s test?
Really, it’s the equivalent of name dropping celebrity friends in a pitch meeting.
Really… they should have just shot 5 minutes of Tatum staring at the lens.
This looks SO cute and like an actually quality film! Such great actors/big names in here! It’s sure to be a winner. Channing is perfect for this role.
I’m surprised that Lil’ Cha-Cha’s already swingin’ this big. Since it’s a St. Elmo’s Fire redo, why not just call it “Elmo” and have Tatum run around in jockey shorts for 90 minutes.
A little confused as to exactly what this is supposed to accomplish and who it’s supposed to convince of what…
I’m sorry, you try to shoot something on a prosumer camera with no money and no crew, what do you think it’s going to look like? It’s going to look exactly like this…some basic handheld coverage shot in the backseat of a moving car. Who is learning anything by watching this?
I mean honestly, the real joke here is the idea that the people on the financing side of things are such cineastes with such refined visual palettes they can look at something like this and make an informed decision about a director’s abilities.
Your money people — read the script, plug the actor’s names in your little foreign value algorithms and come up with a number. Jeese. Don’t make filmmakers go through these embarrassing exercises.
Whoever thinks Channing can’t act is crazy… Did you see DEAR JOHN? The man has chops… His scenes with Richard Jenkins were both touching and heartbreaking… He’ll be a full blown A lister soon enough… Don’t be bitter because he’s hot…. Awesome short, btw… Bravo to temple hill for taking chances on young, up-and-coming talent!!
I am in. Looks like characters actually exist
Exactly the sort of thing that should be getting made these days but isn’t. Good to see there a people out there willing to throw the dice on a project like this.
Jamie Linden is a talented writer and from what I have seen from this short he is a talented director too. Can’t wait to see the feature version.
Jenna Dewan is awesome!!! So glad she is cast with Channing….she brings such a surprising warmth to the film!!! Love her!
It’s absolutely dull and beyond bad. No distributor would ever pick up this self satisfied adolescent look at twenty eight year old social malaise and ennui. And the folks who are writing in and obviously comparing it to “our generation’s ‘Big Chill’” are the same young people who haven’t read enough books or had enough life experience to truly make something meaningful. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if Tatum himself isn’t one of the young commentators on this chain reeling in his chair, unable to handle criticism of his feaux reality pet project. This thing is a joke and it rings so artificially that it feels like a testament to Hollywood’s new mediocrity. But I can see how for a young generation raised on ‘Transformers’ and ‘Iron Man’ how this might have the delusion of being Chekhov. Good friggin’ luck, boys.
The chemistry of the cast is surprisingly amazing. Channing, jenna, brian, and kate mara especially are perfect for this- they seem real, warm, and relatable. This really is the story of the 20something…finally. Temple Hill always gets it right!!!
this looks incredibly banal. Good luck to anybody who finances this. Channing Tatum may be a movie star, but, in terms of a platform release film that needs to be review driven, he means very little. i assume the film will get made and sell well internationally because of the talent and budget, but, from the looks of it, and lack of talent of the director, this film will go to Magnolia vod in best case scenrio. sorry for being a hater, just being honest
It’s a short. Not a finished movie. And as someone who’s felt like the real experiences of late 20-somethings have been woefully under-represented in cinema lately (and The Romantics did NOT speak to anything about my experience as a person or a filmgoer-ugh) I am very excited for this film.
And I really like Channing as an actor and on-screen presence – it really bugs me when people hate because someone’s popular with the masses. Get over yourself.
Congrats to the guys at temple hill for making yet another film that speaks to our generation. Finally a decent movie about the ten year reunion….such a simple concept but hasn’t been done right in a while….Marty and wyck are the perfect people to do this because tel stories that we can relate to. This film is going to be amazing and will truly speak to the 20somethings out there. This short bodes well for the feature.
Marty doesn’t even own the rights, what a joke he is
“A joke”??? Uh, have you never heard of TWILIGHT?!
This looks awful but Channing looks hot.
This is a great idea… Love Channing Tatum and Jamie Linden… I’m excited to see the finished product…. Marty and Wyck are two of the best producers in Hollywood– I think it really speaks to their passion for the industry to take a chance on an unproven filmmaker… Good work Temple Hill!
