High profile media stories are harping on Katherine Heigl’s “image problem” during pre-release publicity for her new movie Life As We Know It. As a result, prior to her satellite press tour this morning, TV types were asked to “please keep the questions strictly about the movie and her charity”. But my KTLA pal Sam Rubin ignored that instruction and obtained a moment of clarity from the actress about her reputation vis a vis her career.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

So it’s considered noteworthy that an actress speaks honestly about her public perceptions? Only in Hollywood. And it shown that the flacks ought to let the talent (at least talent that can independently formulate an idea and then articulate a complete sentence)speak their minds.
Honestly, points to her. I may not be a fan, but it’s nice to see someone humbly admitting to a problem, and doing so in a classy way.
Agreed. Not a fan of Le Heigl – but refreshing interview.
Please explain to me what the “problem” is? Just seems like the media doesn’t appreciate the fact that one actress has the labes to (also) be a real person.
Classy response.
Agreed. Came away with a new respect for her.
It is funny though, that if a man uses the same “tone” as Katherine has in the past, he’s considered direct and confident.
And they wonder why we hate the media.
Just simply not true.
When Shia Lebouf made a snide comment about Indiana Jones 4, it blew up in his face.
Heigl isn’t making this a sexism/double-standard issue. Don’t see why anyone else should either.
I am amazed she gets hired. her image problem is horrible and watching her in a movie is like watching a mannequin.
Next she can tell us why she keeps cranking out romantic comedies as if there was a shortage. I want to see her in another romantic comedy about as much as I want to see Jennifer Aniston in another romantic comedy. Can’t anybody stop them?
Perhaps an intervention is needed.
how about a lesbian romantic comedy with Jen?!
what a brilliant idea! a dramedy!
Interesting premise. That could work. I’d give it a go.
I like the thinking here, but Heigl is so NOT in Anniston’s league…Jen can do better
I agree. She is type-casting herself in these vapid romantic comedies. Her latest film looks lamer than ever.
But people in fly over states need entertainment, too, I suppose.
Not too elitist are you MacGuffin?
Bigoted jackass.
There are women here on the coasts too, though it appears as though you don’t see many.
How about she picks good projects? Y’know, instead of picking shallow, anti-feminist garbage while complaining about the successful roles she’s had…
When a woman his being, without consent, masturbated to orgasm (The Ugly Truth), I don’t think it’s fair for the same actress to complain about having a “shrewish” role. At least Knocked Up was a hit…
I love Heigl. She’s been through a lot both personally and professionally. She paid her dues for years and years before hitting it big. She’s done it all and seen it all and you can tell she’s a little guarded, maybe even jaded, because of it. It SEEMS like once she hit it big, her head got big. But I see it more as, she hit it big and wanted to hit it bigger…keep evolving, keep growing. She doesn’t want to be held back ever again so she plows forward even if it means sometimes sh*t hits the fan. Seems like she wanted off of Grey’s, they didn’t accommodate, then there was drama to boot involving her best friend on and off the show and I’m sure it just made her decide to eff it and act how she wanted so she’d get kicked off the show. I mean look, they ruined Izzie anyway. The stuff with Denny was AMAZING but after that they turned her character into a weirdo, and a boring one at that. I don’t blame her for being upset with the writers and for wanting to go focus on films. She’s super talented, beautiful in an old Hollywood glamorous way, and seems genuinely nice most of the time to boot. I just feel bad that she’s getting stuck in these lame romantic comedies instead of doing amazing drama like she deserves. And I also feel bad that she’s gotten such a bad rep lately. People should really just move on and get over it and let her do her thing. She seems very self aware and grateful despite what people say, so I think people should get over it and back off.
Paid her dues?
She was a teen model who landed a big movie role at 14 (MY FATHER, THE HERO).
After a few more years modeling, she landed ROSWELL for three seasons.
Then GREY’S ANATOMY and KNOCKED UP.
There are dozens of actresses who would like to have “paid their dues” and had a fraction of her career success.
Now if only her mother/manager would advise her to take a serious dramatic role or comedy role that didn’t involve romance…
Her answer was very adult. Maybe she has learned a lesson. That being if she weren’t white she wouldn’t have a career. I notice that on the commercials for “life as we know it” they rarely show her. Smart move. She’s still a bitch but is learning to hide it better. I hope the movie doesn’t do well or else they will keep giving her roles at the expense of more deserving women. But if she is learning to cut the bitch act, then she deserves another chance. I did like “27 dresses” though.
“That being if she weren’t white she wouldn’t have a career.”
Yeah. We never see any black celebrities with maturity problems…
Give me a break. Race has nothing to do with this. I’m sick of people creating a racial dynamic where this is none.
Reminds me of a Morgan Freeman quote. When asked “how do we fix the problem of racism?” Freeman answered, “stop talking about it!”
I like her better already.
V
yeah. that’s what i think of in the off moment when katherine heigl comes to mind. “edgy.” LMFO.
She used the word once, I believe, at the end of the interview, as she struggled to express herself. It seemed clear to me she was using it as a euphemism for “strident,” or something of the sort. She was criticizing herself, not complimenting herself.
I think she meant “edgy” as in easily annoyed.
Great answer from her. Personally, I’ve never had a problem with her comments; I admire her honesty in the Hollywood machine. But I see how the industry might not like her “trashing” her employers, as it were. She has gotten a reputation for being difficult to work with.
I love Heigl’s work, and I especially love her interviews. It’s so refreshing to hear candid responses from a celebrity. I think she needs to find the line between candid and insulting, or defensive, as she said.
How refreshing! Candor? Wait, what? Good for you KH.
Good for her. I still don’t like her much as an actress, but I admire anyone who owns up to their mistakes and tries to fix them.
not that great of an actress first off…I mean she got lucky on a tv show…because of the show…in film she is exposed as a ham and egger
I’m not a fan of hers, and this movie looks horrendous, but I have to give her credit — that was a pretty honest and straightforward answer, rather than defensive. Explain this to me, vis a vis the “image problems”: aside from Killers, what movie has she been in that tanked? The Ugly Truth did well, 27 Dresses did well… It doesn’t sound like the image problems have really affected her box office, have they?
Thank the Lord she’s getting it…
Good for Katherine to recognize that no one likes her!
Well here is where you are wrong Jim. No one likes her on these message boards where people like you remain anonymous…. but to her face, it’s nothing but adoration. That’s the real reason celebrities loose touch with what is real – no one is honest with them to their face. Heigl is one of the least liked – yet when she walks into a room – both fans and industry folks alike simply gush.
Extreme adoration is simply not normal. Even children who are extremely adored turn into freaks.
Thanks for the education, Benjamin. I love the irony of being called out as an anonymous message board poster by an anonymous message board poster.
And FWIW, I don’t hate her because I know her. I hate her because I watched The Ugly Truth.
As a fan of Katherine’s first work on Grey’s I can say that it isn’t the ‘edginess’ as she described it (or maybe she perceives that as her buttons, who knows, maybe that’s right) but I feel it’s an attitude of entitlement that turned me off. I thought here’s this fresh face, clearly has some chops (not amazing but good and sometimes terrific in the early days of that show) did good work in Knocked Up and had a real shot at movie stardom. I think it’s a symptom of our age. The stars I grew up watching had all the talent and the press was equally hounding (perhaps not so ubiquitous) but they took their time in the public eye with grace, good humor and gratitude. Even huge stars like Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts had an ease and understanding of treating their careers as huge gifts despite their hard work (even if that’s just a truth you show the world and not your reps, etc.). This weird sense of being offended in public is weird and offputting and, frankly, diminishing. It overly humanizes a person who might be as star. And stars, like all illusions, should glimmer at an impossible distance just out of hand but bright as the heavens.
This was a good answer and she came off well here, but I agree it was her sense of entitlement that put me off. I thought it was great when she was honest and spoke her mind with regards to the Isaiah Washington incident, but then she was suddenly trashing the film that made her a movie star (Knocked Up), bitching about the hours she worked on Grey’s (even though the hours were to accomodate her movie schedule), correcting the emcee when he mispronounced her name at the Emmys, and trashing the Grey’s writers by not submitting herself again because she “wasn’t given the material.” It’s one thing to speak your mind, it’s another to come off like an arrogant ingrate.
YES! Why do actors think the general public – or much of Hollywood for that matter – really care what their “real” thoughts are? Almost everyone gets paid in any line of work to keep their mouths shut. K. may be ‘defending’ herself on some of this – but it’d be better to just give everyone a public line, wink and smile, and move on to the next project. Sorry if it come across as “fake” – THAT’S WHAT WE ALL WANT!
Is this off-topic of me? Perhaps and apologies, but I can’t think of anything at the mention of KH but how awful this movie’s concept is. I went to SITC2 with a girlfriend who was pregnant and the early trailer for this movie made her burst into tears in the theater. Because it’s a COMEDY about a baby’s parents dying. Yep. I can barely grasp how desperate everybody involved with that film had to be to make it.
I don’t think it’s an image problem, I think it’s a personality problem.
I love that she’s so honest. It’s refreshing.
The only thing I know about this woman is that she may have a disabled or delayed sibling, and that I think she adopted a disabled or delayed child. That’s a hell of a lot more than you can say for other Hollywood stars, and enough of a legacy right there.
Wonder if she’ll EVER have the good fortune to work with Judd Apatow again? Yes, she has an image problem. Cigarettes! And very limited chops to boot. The turn with Ashton Kutcher was a stinker.
She should stay ‘edgy.’ Better that than no personality at all.
