Sex and the City co-star Kristin Davis is returning to series television with a new single-camera comedy. Davis is set to star and co-executive produce NBC’s The Happiness Project, a comedy based on Gretchen Rubin’s best-selling memoir, which writer Kristin Newman (Chuck, How I Met Your Mother) is in negotiations to write and executive produce. Separately, Davis has been tapped to co-star opposite Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, New Line’s sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, in which she will play love interest to Johnson and mother to Josh Hutcherson. Davis has just started filming the movie in Hawaii.

Rubin’s memoir chronicles the New York-based writer’s account of the year she spent test-driving studies and theories about how to be happier. It also spawned a popular blog whose fans included Davis, which is how the actress got involved in the TV project. NBC’s The Happiness Project, whose protagonist played by Davis will also be on a year-long quest to become happier, has received a script commitment. It will be produced by UMS and Mosaic, with Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and Dave Fleming, Davis’ manager, executive producing with Newman. Literary manager Christy Fletcher of Fletcher & Co. will co-executive produce with Davis and Rubin. Davis recently reprised her role as Charlotte in New Line’s Sex and the City 2 and co-starred in Couples Retreat. Fletcher’s other TV projects in the works include Larry Charles’ MRC/Epix’s iCons, based on the novel Option$ by Dan Lyons (aka Fake Steve Jobs), and ABC’s My Formerly Hot Life. The Happiness Project was packaged by UTA which reps Davis, Newman, Rubin and Fletcher.
