EXCLUSIVE: Mark Wahlberg, who’s coming off the summer hit The Other Guys with Will Ferrell, is negotiating to star in another buddy comedy. You might think we’ve seen it all on the well trodden buddy comedy trail, but how about one with a guy and his life-size, walking-talking teddy bear? Wahlberg will star in Ted, the R-rated directorial debut of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane which Media Rights Capital committed to finance at a $65 million budget. Universal Pictures acquired it last April. Wahlberg will play an average Boston guy who’s normal except for the childhood wish he made that his teddy bear could come to life — and it did. Years later, the boy is an adult,
and the bear is still his best friend. But the bear, a carousing, irresponsible slacker, is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves. MacFarlane will provide the voice of the bear, which will be brought to life through CG in an otherwise live action format. MacFarlane wrote the script with Family Guy cohorts Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, and they go past that racy sitcom, which is why the film will be R-rated. Ted will be produced by Scott Stuber through his Universal-based Stuber Pictures, along with MacFarlane, John Jacobs and MRC. Wahlberg, who plays Boston fighter Irish Mickey Ward in the David O Russell-directed Oscar-season release The Fighter, plans to next star in Contraband, the English language remake of the 2008 Icelandic crime drama Reykjavic-Rotterdam. That film, also for Universal, will co-star Kate Beckinsale. The original film’s star, Baltasar Kormakur, is directing. Wahlberg then hopes to follow that picture with Ted. WME and Leverage are negotiating his deal.
It’s another picture in the growing Universal-MRC relationship, but I’m told it’s not part of the upcoming deal that will see MRC fund 20 films over 5 years, and then pay a distribution fee to Universal. The studio recently released MRC’s Devil, and has set a March 4, 2011 release date for the George Nolfi-directed The Adjustment Bureau, which stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
Universal Buys Seth MacFarlane’s R-Rated Comedy About Teddy Bear In MRC Deal

Would love an in-depth look at how a company like MRC stays in the game, Nikki.
Cause right now, it looks like smoke and mirrors.
What are these people on?
BYD
The movie looks interesting, but how is MRC still in business?
Nobody likes Modi and Asif and they have lost just ridiculous amounts of money… Even by Hollywood-interloper standards.
Sounds awesome! Mark Wahlberg is best in comedies. Everything he says sounds hilarious.
I agree. Sounds hysterical. For the naysayers, just remember Family Guy was canceled and then brought back by popular demand to become one of the most successful animation series in history after The Simpsons. Somebody at some point said “What are they smoking” about Family Guy, and guess what? They was wrong.
and now… Mark Wahlberg talks to stuffed animals.
Why are they spending 65 million for this? Can’t it be made for 25 million? Obviously it could be made for that amount so why the inflated budget?
CGI producers are the biggest money-whores in town… anything that has a substantial amount of QUALITY CGI is going to balloon a budget to wazzoo-ripping levels… for no reason, when one could get top quality CGI work in Canada, Australia or South Korea…
marketing & advertising. takes a lot to sell a piece of shit to the masses
Um…can you say “Drop Dead Fred” the CG remake????…maybe mixed with some (stolen) “Harvey” bits and a dash of “Death to Smoochie”….
Yikes this sounds AWFUL….
I agree! Wahlberg can’t act!
HOLY CRAP. Sounds like celluloid feces.
Where have the good Hollywood ideas gone, and why oh why can’t anyone find them?
Is the bear’s name Rupert? Is Marky Mark playing an adult Stewie?
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I wonder if there will be a beach scene as well.
I would dearly love to know how stuff like this gets greenlit. It’s as if we’re all living in a never-ending episode of The Twilight Zone.
I wonder this ALL the time. *downs shot*
I think it’d be great if the Teddy bear turned out to be part of some minority group and then wahlberg beat the crap out of it.
Sounds a LOT like Aussie comedy Wilfrid only the teddy bear is a talking dog – a ‘carousing, irresponsible slacker’ who gets ‘in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves’. Weird…
Yeah and didn’t FX just pick up a series based on Wilfred? Scroll thru Deadline and you’ll see the announcement. “Great” minds think alike.
Is anyone else getting tired of hearing about Seth MacFarlane all the time? Family Guy is okay, it certainly has its moments, Cleveland and American Dad are unwatchable. Enough already.
WINKIE.
Go read the book. Looks like Seth took Oprah’s advice, read it and stole the concept. Hack. Karma is gonna get you.
Hack? He has 3 of the highest rated cartoons of all time. I suspect that you’re just another nobody who never has, & never will achieve anything. So, you go around ripping people who actually are succesful just so you can feel better about how shitty your life is. Go out & do something with your life.
Isn’t this a variation on “The Beaver”? – another film that has bomb written all over it.
Wahlberg isn’t funny. Making fun of Wahlberg’s unusual speech pattern is funny. Watching a “Funky Bunch” video is funny. But not Mark himself.
Wahlberg is funny. Admit it. Makes me laugh.
Uh, this sounds AWESOME. Seth rules. Too bad Marky Mark is going to be in it. Did no one see The Happening?
Walhberg is so funny(even if it’s not purposely) in “the happening”
Not Wahlberg’s fault that M. Night Shamalamadingdong thinks he’s the greatest director ever and nobody in Hollywood will tell him otherwise.
I love reading bitter comments from people not in the business wishing they were. Tough to always be looking thru the window, eh? Seth has an amazing track record so why don’t we all take a deep breathe, wait for the movie to come out and then comment. Geeez!
The movie sounds interesting. Ferrell is great comedian and a movie with Mark, I can see that this movie will turn out good.
This is great. Now, if we’re lucky Christine O’Donnell can become president and Ted can be her VP. A witch and a teddy bear running the country. Hollywood has gone nuts. This whole thing is a rip off of the talking dog project.
Marky Mark has given all he has to offer. Frown, frown and frown. Hey, whatever the emotion needed, just frown. Will the teddy bear frown and talk in soft voice when he’s showing tender feelings. I just saw The Lovely Bones…it could have been a good movie except for…well you know…the frown. Pretty soon he will need Botox to get the crevices out of his forehead.
How can ANYONE ask “how did this get greenlit”. Look at Seth’s stuff. It’s ratings, it’s DVD sales, its out and out popularity.
Heck, look at the popularity/sales of pretty much anything on Adult Swim.
Hes bankable right now. Really bankable. Plus, if this movie goes well, their going to have a new rising star director in their pocket.
… And it’s almost certainly going to do well. With Mark on board, some good CGI, and some stupid yet creative humor.
Come on. Don’t act all high and mighty. You know EXACTLY why this is being made.
I agree with Erik this could be a great adult comedy, i for one love rude crude humour at its best, movies like The Hangover, The Other Guys and so on are funny too me cos there not made for kids or family friendly audiences, im 22 and i love a good laugh and think family guy is very amusing so im excited to see how Seth approaches this.
This will Suck… A must-miss film.
Hey Seth, how many new “friends” did you make at your party. Frickin’ desperate loser, even with all that dough.
I am forever indebted to you for this infomiraton.
I love how everyone back when this was announced thinks its gonna suck when I saw it yesterday and its the funnest movie ever!
