While Marvel put pedal to the metal to bring The Avengers and Iron Man 3 into the Disney distribution fold, the superhero factor has pumped the brakes on Runaways, the youth-oriented superhero movie that had been moving quickly toward a production start. Word in agency circles is that the project was flat-lining because it’s similar in age demo to Kick-Ass, but insiders tell me that isn’t true. Marvel simply has too much going on at the moment and will take its time on the live action adaptation of the comic hatched by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan. It’s called the Breakfast Club of superhero saga, dealing with the children of super-villains who are cursed with evil superpowers. They live in a secret lair under the La Brea tar pits, and try to use their unusual powers for heroic purposes. Director Peter Sollett, who signed up with the idea this would be his followup to Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, is still attached but has been invited to take another film first.

I actually think this one might lend itself better to television also… especially with Vaughan on board, as he’s a TV vet.
Craig beat me to it, I think this would make a much better series than feature film.
I agree, Vaughan writes amazing comics and TV scripts, but apparently has trouble with features. Plus add someone like Joss Whedon, who wrote a few of the comics and this could have potential to be amazing!
Not sure where the “cursed with evil superpowers” thing comes from… I don’t recall anything like that.
It could definitely work as a “Buffy” style television series.
lets face it,this would be barely watched, just as kick ass or scott pilgrim
Brian K. Vaughn is an amazing writer. Pair this with Whedon and you’d have a hit.
barely watched? Theatrically kick-ass did barely ok and pilgrim bombed. But Kick-Ass has kicked ass on dvd/bluray and pilgrim will likely do the same
Runaways should definitely be a TV show and not a movie.
This is a very bad idea.
Why does this have to be a movie OR television show? The comic’s fucking great as it is. A movie or TV show would just add pressure to the comic’s writers to move what’s already good more in line with whatever compromises are put on the premise by a network or studio.
Because Disney didn’t pay 4 billion for Marvel to sell comic books, they bought it to sell TV and Film.
Don’t forget merchandise. Clothing, toys, video games which happens to rank in more billions then movies.
In the immortal words of Eugene Levy’s robot-character in WAITING FOR GUFFMAN…
Boring! Boring! Boring!
I think this would do better at the box office, as it’s more of a fun adventure or superhero film involving teens.Plus it has the Marvel/Disney name behind it.
Kick Ass didn’t do too well in theaters because it’s not affiliated with any other comic, plus it was an R-rated unknown superhero with a teen lead.
Scott Pilgrim was great too, but the trailers just looked too wild for the general audiences.I’m sure it will become a sleeper DVD hit.
I really think Disney should have left those two films with Paramount, so they could focus on producing and marketing Runaways, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange and maybe Black Panther. Now, who knows when they’ll get around to those films?
This will make a great family film. It’s the most original concept in a mainstream Marvel book in ages.
Now Vaughn’s “Y-the Last Man”, that should be a TV show.
Agreed. Y should be an HBO miniseries. Condensing it into a 2 hour feature film is a terrible idea.
That’s what they said about Watchmen, me included.
Why is anyone mentioning Joss Whedon? Yes, he had a run on Runaways, but the issues he wrote sucked. I think Joss is a damn good writer, but he didn’t have a handle on the characters.
Whedon undid most of Chase’s character development, decided that Xavin is female [because that's the form Xavin takes when (s)he gets angry?], all the characters in past New York were underwritten, and the time travel story was essentially pointless save Nico getting a new Staff of One and Chase reacquiring his fistigons.
Expectations were high for Joss Whedon, but instead of proving that the series could survive after Vaughn, he marked the beginning of the series decline.
Though his run was better the Moore’s. An evil disc jockey creating a giant made of Zombies, that should have been awesome instead of…meh.
I agree with you generally re: Whedon’s work (though I thought his run was above average, it certainly wasn’t drivel), but come on. Whedon gave us Ultron’s son and he is awesome.
“Whedon gave us Ultron’s son and he is awesome.”
Ummm… no. Ultron’s son (Victor Mancha) debuted in the True Believers arc which was written by Brian K. Vaughan.

I don’t know if anyone’s said this already, but I think a Runaways MOVIE would be an amazing kick start to a SERIES… You know? Like put in the main starting themes and plots in the movie (to make familiarity), create hype and awareness of the Runaways movie, leave the movie in a cliffhanger, and shift over to a series on Disney or something with the same cast and all… Eh?
What I want to know is what is happens now? Are they just going to leave chase in the er? HE WAS HIT BY A CAR! After all of the awards
and acclaim, they are just going to leave him there? WTF?!!!
i think they should make a movie and then they should make a television series tha will NOT be on disney channel or disney xd. maybe they might make a sequeal
why did chase magicly reappaer when him and the team ran into the avengers accademy? oh yeah, and who else thinks that joey king (RAMONA AND BEEZUS) should play molly hayes aka bruiser
