Mel Gibson will make an appearance in Hangover 2 because Jodie Foster tells Extra, “he really liked the humor in that first movie”. But won’t be playing himself. News reports say he’ll portray a larger than life character like Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.

Mel Gibson is gonna be here in Bangkok? Haha… Get ready for another drunken mishap. There’s a reason Hangover 2 is being shot here, ya know..
Here is what bothers me about this. For people like Mel Gibson who spew hateful and ignorant speech (in his case, multiple offenses), why has it become a standard mea culpa to play a “wacky” character on a big popcorn comedy? It diminishes general issues with sexism and racism that we forget are still rampant in society, not just amongst nutjob celebrities.
Let’s be honest here, do you think Tom Cruise is any less nutty even if you laughed at him in Tropic Thunder?
This attempt to save Mel’s image just convinces me that we in the Industry really are willing to compromise our integrity in order to squeeze out more cash. That’s kinda sad. If Mel wants to save his image, he should volunteer in a soup kitchen this Thanksgiving. It’d at least make seem more genuine.
I agree with Justin H. It’s a sign of how desperate Gibson is that he’s deliberately modeled his comeback on Cruise’s in Tropic Thunder. In lieue of an apology – even a non-apology apology – and a proper attempt at redemption and rehabilitation, we have the whacky cameo. And then all is forgiven? It shouldn’t be. Also sad/revealing that Gibson is letting Jodie Foster do his bidding for him now. What happened to Alan Nierob?
Gibson needs to go away. He’s toxic and beyond rehabilitation.
Is this really an attempt to save his image? Looks more like exploitation to me. Clearly he’s the Mike Tyson of this film. I’m no Mel Gibson defender but one look at the landscape in Hollywood and it’s easy to understand how a star of his magnitude can hold the views he has. Gibson is a “symptom” of a far greater illness plaguing the industry. Putting him in a soup kitchen won’t change a damn thing.
Nope, Tyson was telling the truth on Entourage this season. He’s back in the sequel.
Who cares if he is doing it to save his image. I really don’t care about him or any of them personally. I just hope its funny as shit!!! You retards look into this stuff too much. Plus I bet Mel Gibson would fit in well with my friends and I. He likes to drink and say profane things.
Your use of the slur “retard” certainly convinces me you and Mel would make a great fit. How proud you must be.
It must be nice to be flawless, unknown, and be able to sit back and pontificate about other people’s careers and screw ups.
Maybe I’m biased because I’ve always been a fan of Gibson, but while I was extremely dismayed by his drunken comments and most recently his angry phone calls, I think people deserve the benefit of the doubt and should be given a second chance.
We all have our prejudices that we fight against. Maybe Gibson has spent his adult life fighting against his, and in moments of weakness, they got the better of him. I tend to look at people as complex human beings and not simply black or white, good or evil.
Gibson is not an evil man, as far as I can tell, and this public vilification of him and Tom Cruise strikes me as petty b.s. from people who are as intolerant as the people they rage against.
I think at the point where someone verbally marauders an entire race of people to justify the Holocaust, then turns around and knocks teeth out of his baby’s mother’s mouth (and calls her some of the most vile names in the English language), they’ve clearly exhibited that they don’t deserve any type of sympathy or “understanding”, as you seem to put it.
What makes it worse, and unforgiveable, is that Mr. Gibson has fame and fortune a hundred times over, and as such should serve as some sort of role model to others, but time and time again, it is ONLY about MEL GIBSON, and what can WE do for MEL.
And if YOU don’t like what MEL has to say, you can just suck it cause MEL don’t NEED YOU. He’ll walk off your set when you interview him about that movie of his coming out – because HE didn’t like the fact that you’ve ALSO got questions about his arrest. Diplomacy? Heh. Not Mel. Fuck ‘em.
Do we all make mistakes? Sure. But some mistakes are bad enough to make people just not want to see or associate with you anymore, and Mel is in that camp.
It is abominable to think that there are fans who have forgiven him, and who don’t care what he does to other people, so long as he keeps making movies. These people are just as bad as fans who welcome back public sports figures who’ve raped several women, or who’ve been convicted of dogfighting. Are you really that vapid?
I apologize for preferring NOT to support someone who holds no respect for humanity, but second chances are reserved for people who WANT to change.
You are a DOLT if you think Mel Gibson cares about ANYONE but himself.
Oh for pete’s sake, I had promised myself I would never spend money for another Mel Gibson movie.
I guess I’ll have to console myself that at least it’s a Zach Galifianakis movie.
I guess I will not be seeing the sequel. As someone who was offended by Mel’s drunken tirade, I will never see any movies being released that he is in.
I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Agree w Daniel. I made that pledge as well. Im black and was one of the biggest Mel Gibson fans…whenever ppl would ask me my fav actors, Mel would always get mention. I use the N word all the time, i wont lie, and my white best friend says it as well so im not soooo insulted by Mel’s use of it. Its just the way he talked to that woman PERIOD, made me sick to my stomach because shes a mother and i am very close to my mom and if i heard ANY man talking to my mother like that, lets just call Jack McCoy and lets make a deal cause i will happily plead guilty to assault and attempted murder.
I too will not be seeing any movies Mel is a part of which sucks cuz i really LOVED the first hangover.
No one should be using the N word, dude.
And guys like you condoning your white friend’s use of it and shunning Mel Gibson for it is just as hypocritical as it is ignorant.
Thanks for contributing further to the problem.
Hey Teddy I got good money that “Mr. Rod” is not black nor a Mister.
I agree some people should not use it but what if they use it in an artist way? What then? I think there are appropriate times to use and other times… not so much.
agree with daniel. i liked the first movie but will never pay money to see anything mel gibson is in.
I won’t be seeing this now either. Sad.
I hope this is a signal that THE BEAVER is closer to release. Really and truly that is a fantastic script (regardless of the cast) and will do well, thus shutting up all the fanatics of tabloid journalism.
Why would the studio put the “The Hangover” franchise at risk by hiring Gibson? The movie doesn’t need him. There is nothing to be gained and a lot to lose.
Because contrary to the “it’s not about black or white, it’s about green” rhetoric in Hollywood there’s things a LOT more important to the studio heads than making a profit.
They greenlight movies because there’s a particular message or image they want to push to the masses (emo, wimp “superheroes” like Scott Pilgrim/Kick-Ass etc) or because they want to support a friend/protege’s career (Spielberg pimping LeBoof is a prime example) or because they want to give the finger to a particular group (Bonfire of the Vanities or casting Gibson in Hangoever 2).
That’s why. Anyone who thinks that money the only (or even most important) factor in a studios decision-making is a damned empty-headed fool.
And am I the only one totally creeped out by Jodie Foster’s seemingly non-stop infatuation and dripping-panties support for all things “Gibson?”
I’m starting to get nauseous whenever her name pops up.
Just further evidence that all is forgiven in hollywood if you can pay for it. the guy has all that passion of the christ money, and so people will continue to want to be in business with him. let this be a lesson to all those idiots who keep insisting hollywood is all about liberal politics. maybe some of the artistic folks are, but when it comes to the business side, it’s all about the money.
Here here.
Thank you Justin for your comment. Well said. Unfortunately, I think we all know how little integrity there is in the Industry. And maybe someday that will change, but I suspect not. I do think that Mel is a huge talent, but his personal behavior makes him someone most of us don’t want to see on the big screen and I also will skip the movie. It is curious why the studio is choosing to do this. It seems the downside not just in lost ticket sales– which may or may not be substantial– but also in tarring the movie with controversy is far bigger than the upside. Is the thought they will attract a lot of people who feel too much has been made of Mel’s rants and odious behavior and that they will buy a ticket to show their support. It’s the only think I can think of.
Exactly when did Jodie Foster become Mel Gibsons bitch?
Mel Gibson in Hangover 2?
So it will be a documentary then?
Didn’t Ari say something about Gibson never working in this town again…
Guess his power is slipping.
Ari has a lot of control, but not total control over everything. From what I understand Mel Gibson will definitely never work on an HBO project – he’s blacklisted there.
If you’re a MAN SHOW kinda guy, who enjoys calling your pals “faggots” and practices general misogyny, you can’t wait to see Gibson, a kind of slapping-not-punching, phoning-not-raping Tyson, hate on Jews and Women. The director wants controversy and hopes to attract lovers of angry little Hitlers, like himself. The first film did wonders for B. Cooper, you can’t plug that shitty swagger of his, into anything other than a fratboy comedy, just like his mentor Vince Vaughn.
If Mark Gordon can work so can Mel.
Good points that many of you have. I also don’t see the upside of having Gibson in this movie. The sequel is almost guaranteed to be a success. In these risk-averse times, I don’t see how adding Gibson to the equation will help the movie. There is the idea, of course, that he may be funding part of the movie. He’s got plenty of money.
Wow, just lost a LOT of respect for Todd Phillips and Scott Budnick. Why make the film controversial. – $14 now.
apparently todd phillips is a vertical thinker. casting mike tyson in a comedy was not an obvious angle. no one should ever justify mel gibson’s big mouth though.
Is there any truth to the rumor that the cameo for “Hangover 3″ will be Randy Quaid??
The whole thing is ridiculous. It doesn’t matter what Mel Gibson said, he’s just some crazy person. Treat him like it, and stop caring.
He’s more than a crazy person. he’s a dangerous, hate filled, crazy person. I think TP throwing him this bone is beyond disgusting. I seriously hope Mel has a meltdown on set and kills Phillips. Serve him right. What a shame.
The question isn’t why does Mel want this, but why do they want him? My guess is they think he’ll help with the international box office.
I think the point being made here is their international box office is FINE. They DON’T need Mel Gibson.
Tyson beat up Robin Givens and bit off a piece of someone’s ear. And you guys are complaining about the casting of a drunk with issues in the sequel? Get over it. It’s happening. And you can all pontificate endlessly on a messageboard, but average joe moviegoer is going to see the cameo and say “Holy shit, Braveheart was funny in that scene”…
What he did was wrong. But many people in Hollywood have royally screwed up and have been forgiven. You don’t have to forgive Mel. But we also don’t need to hear you say you are boycotting a movie. No one cares. This movie will be huge just like the 1st.
I would love for the studio to actually publicize Gibson’s cameo. Then you would eat your words, and the sequel would do nowhere near the business they’d expect.
i am so not a mel gibson apologist. but i would like to point out that mike tyson (who as someone previously mentioned was convicted of rape and also bit off a person’s ear) was in the trailer for The Hangover and that bit of the trailer got the biggest laugh when i saw it screen in front of Bruno (remember that movie).
by the time the Hangover 2 comes out this stuff with mel gibson’s girlfriend will be old news for flyover country because there will be a bigger story. but no one should forget the crazy s**t he’s said.
the Hangover 2 has a helluvalot to live up to. so maybe the powers that be are trying to be edgy. or appeal to the redneck quadrant.
I get uncomfortable watching Mel Gibson now, knowing that he has a lot of pent up rage inside. I don’t think I could see him as funny. I’m the one person who didn’t like Mike Tyson’s cameo in The Hangover, also, because no amount of humor can hide the fact that he’s a violent person. I wish I was one of those people that could put a person’s public persona aside and simply enjoy the character, but I have a hard time doing it sometimes.
That said, if you wanted to ban people from Hollywood on the grounds of morals and ethics, you’ll have to get rid of more than just Mel Gibson. This is the town that puts Roman Polanski on a pedestal, remember? If a studio wants to pay him to be in a movie, go ahead. The viewers will decide whether or not they want to see it.
Why would Hangover 2 take such a risk?
Comedies that don’t take risks are pretty weak movies.
1. If actions speak louder than words, and they do, then no one is more racist than the fake liberals in Hollywood who pretend to love and accept everyone, but in reality only love and accept everyone who is just like them, i.e. race, religion, political views, etc. Those of you who are trying to ruin Mel because he’s anti-semitic are just as racist as him, if not more so. You just haven’t been caught on camera or voicemail yet.
2. Didn’t your mama, daddy, rabbi, priest teach you that forgiveness of others is necessary for you to be forgiven? Get over it. You really sound like whiny little b*tches at this point.
3. Most people in this country, thankfully, aren’t nearly as petty and mean spirited as the people in this business. They go see movies because of the story, not because of who is or isn’t in it. Hangover 2 will be a hit if it’s a good movie. I personally can’t wait to see Mel in it.
4. Besides being a rage filled alcoholic, Mel is also extremely talented, successful and rich. Most of you are…probably not. Hate on haters! Hope Mel makes you haters his motivators.
Interesting to read the comments here and elsewhere. If I were to make a guess, it seems like people in Hollywood place more value on one’s words than their actions. e.g., Tyson was convicted of rape (with minor offenses of biting off part of Holyfield’s ear and his teenage thuggery). Polanski’s was convicted in absentia of rape (of a 13-year-old!) yet the vitriol directed toward Gibson over his words appears greater than the vitriol directed at the rapists. It may not dovetail with people’s preferences in this case, but there is a massive difference between actions and words.
Lastly, is it possible that because of Gibson’s “Passion of The Christ” he is not given a “Get Out of Jail Free Card” with the Hollywood crowd?
The media blew it all out of proportion. It’s just like how Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah’s couch, it was on the news none-stop and I was like 99% of everyone and that is including you who’s reading this has done WAY worse. Whoopi, Glover and etc. all came to his defense. His baby’s mother is such a sleeze, have you seen her interviews, she is so obviously fake than I almost puked in my mouth. She knew what buttons to push, she pushed them and turned on the tape recorder. Mel put millions of his own money into her joke of a singing career and she tried to twist things around on him. Anyone who is against Mel is a fool who got played and you don’t know how conniving some women can be. The age of women not being able to vote was decades ago, women can be just as tricky as bad as men these days.
Give the man a break. Everyone man who’s a man’s man talks like that on occasion. It doesn’t mean he is Freddy Kruger. It was funny how he called the cop sugar t%ts. lol She must have been hot. I know a female cop and she lets the men go in the front door first and put there hides on the risk. Back to Mel, I look forward to all his movies.
