EXCLUSIVE: Michael Jackson, who reportedly earned $275 million posthumously over the past year for his estate, isn’t slowing down anytime soon. I’m told that GK Films is in active negotiations to acquire a package for a film that is being fashioned around his groundbreaking hit song Thriller. The film, which has been quietly shopped over the past several weeks by Real Effects Entertainment, has Kenny Ortega attached to direct, and The Hangover scribe Jeremy Garelick to write the screenplay. While GK is in the driver’s seat, I’m told that Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are all in the mix on what will shape up as a pricey rights deal, but which will turn out to be a film budgeted at under $50 million. Plot is being kept under wraps but I understand it has to do with the song’s folklore, involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in. All of this deal making is subject to a deal being completed with Jackson’s estate, but that has been in the works for some time and is expected to be sealed. Thriller songwriter Rod Temperton is also in the mix. On top of the Thriller deal, I’ve heard that Cirque du Soleil is in talks to do two live shows based on Jackson’s music, and that Montecito partners Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock are looking to do a feature about Jackson’s younger years.
There is symmetry to GK in that the deal is being spearheaded by GK Films president Peter Schlessel. While at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Schlessel made the deal for This Is It!, the feature film that Ortega directed which used rehearsal footage from what was expected to be Jackson’s farewell tour. That film was profitable for SPE, and it is likely that GK Films will distribute Thriller through its SPE output deal. UTA reps Garelick and Reel Effects, while Paradigm reps Ortega.

Hollywood is so out of ideas they need to remake a music video as a feature now?
RIP Originality.
Here to second that. “Brand” recognition. Like we give a sh*t.
Agreed, Lytton
All possible plots for any media, books, music, films, plays, were tapped out a century ago.
All we can do is try to make things that give a different spin to an existing plot.
Come on, try it, come up with a plot-line that is completly original and entertaining. If you do you’ll be a millionaire.
Has Hollywood done a feature film based on a video before? If not, wouldn’t this be an original idea?
Might be the biggest movie of all time. Excited!
The only movie about Michael Jackson that should be made is one about his 4 year relationship (in the late 80s/early 90s)with a young Arab woman that was kept secret as she was set to be in an arranged marriage. Very few people know about this remarkable love story. Many of the songs in his Dangerous album pertain to this girlfriend.
I can almost smell this load of crap through my monitor…
If it’s in any way, shape or form about Vincent Price, look for Tim Burton to end up involved, one would think. Surprising that a Vincent Price biopic hasn’t come out of his camp yet, or a feature version of his short, “Vincent”.
J.
Actually, that brings up a question: why the hell is the JACKSON estate peddling a project seemingly built around VINCENT PRICE?
Jeremy Garelick wrote THE HANGOVER? Really, last time I checked he did an uncredited rewrite. That is very different than staring at a blank page. When it becomes the Rewriting Guild of America then you can say he wrote it.
Is this Lucas or Moore posting? Everybody in Hollywood knows that Garelick did all the heavy comedic lifting on THE HANGOVER and got screwed by the WGA on a shared credit.
I did check and everyone in Hollywood and beyond, including the original writers, know that Garelick wrote the version of the Hangover that hit the screen. The Writers Guild got this one wrong.
This could be amazing IF they can possibly do it justice. There are few who can top Michael Jackson in the perfectionism department. the Thriller segment of the London O2 concerts was going to be absolutely astounding! MJ still thrills, now from the other side! I wish them the best in their efforts!
This is actually a good idea.
A good idea indeed, Michael’s legacy will never stop whatever idea they will come up to, the people especially Michael Jackson’s fans will be out there to patronize it.
idea: base the movie on the entire Thriller album, not just one song.
Jeremy Garelick is a genius solely based on the fact he managed to figure out a way to put it out there that he wrote HANGOVER. He and his people have been telling that to so many people for so long that it has actually become fact.
I mean this is seriously unreal. It’s one thing for a co-writer to say you wrote the film–well, that would be half true. But for an UNCREDITED writer to say he wrote the film is just insane. This is shameful and utterly disrespectful to the real writers Lucas and Moore. Jeremy should be calling the guys to apologize…and shame on Mike Fleming for going on record saying Jeremy wrote the film without clarifying he was uncredited and without giving Lucas and Moore their deserved credit. News flash–the WGA exists for a reason and grants credits based on certain guidelines for a reason. You pay the dues for this privilege, why don’t you try respect it.
Then why did Todd Philips, when accepting the Golden Globe for the movie, not mention Lucas/Moore but mentioned Garelick?
Cirque isn’t “in talks” to create Michael Jackson shows, at least any more. Those talks started back in November of last year, and the shows have been officially announced since April of this year.
If they do base it around Vincent Price they better give his estate a bigger cut then the ripoff deal he got originally from that freak michael jackson.
Ummmm, he agreed to it, and if you heard him talk, he didn’t know it would become so big.
Of course he’d get a bigger cut though I’m sure of this.
I have the only existing video of Vincent Price reciting the poem from”Thriller” – it’s amazing and so was he.
Not sure where the idea that taking a music video and turning it into a feature film is just another tired old worn out Hollywood formula as some have commented. For the life of me I can’t think of a single example where this has been done before. So I’m a little confused about this not being original. I think the feature length film is an incredible idea, and I do believe it came from the King of Pop himself according to an earlier interview with Ortega. I would love to see some of the concepts in the video developed further, like the way that the viewer is constantly challenged to try to figure out what is the dream and what is reality. Thriller also strongly expresses the idea of the “Eye of the Beholder”. Are love and fear real or just an illusion? Is it really just a reflection of the self? All great ideas to be explored in depth. LOVE IT. In the right hands this will be a great film.
Thriller was probably the best MTV video in history!
