The 4th entry will be titled Mission:Impossible Ghost Protocol. The name was announced at a press conference in Dubai attended by Tom Cruise, director Brad Bird and co-stars Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. It’s in production now and is scheduled for release in December 2011. Besides the Dubai location, other shooting spots include Moscow and Prague.
What does the title mean? In CIA parlance, the term “ghost” can refer to some of the suspected terrorists held at Guantamo Bay and other secret bases around the world. Could the plot involve Ethan Hunt and his team being assigned to hunt down an escaped “ghost?” Just speculating.

We saw Tom Cruise at the Americana several weeks back on what looked like a location scout. It was just him and a woman who worked there. No one else seemed to notice it was Tom Cruise (baseball hat, sunglasses, very KNIGHT AND DAY). But Dubai, Moscow, Prague, and Glendale? This movie’s gonna be awesome.
Sounds pretty good. However, I wonder if the bulk of todays ticket buying public still Identifies with the MI brand? We will soon find out.
Just ‘Ghost Protocol’? Yeesh.
Wtf???
Who was in charge of naming this thing?–A former blockbuster video clerk? It sounds straight out of the direct-to-DVD bin.
I know it’s just a title, but…..ew.
Ghost Protocol? Jeez, sounds like a bad Tom Clancy video game.
The Brad Bird? Of “The Incredibles” “Iron Giant” and Pixar lore? Could be interesting to see a different take.
Horrible title. Who the hell sits in a board meeting, hears the words “Ghost Protocol”, and actually thinks “Y’know what? That’s hot. That sounds like a good idea”????
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol sounds like the title of a video game tie in. Nobody in that meeting had a better title?
So let me guess. Some hipster came up with that title in the middle of a pot-drenched Scooby-Doo marathon.
Someone got paid for coming up with that? And Brad Bird didn’t say “Now hold on…”? I fear Bird is just a powerless hand for hire and Tom Cruise is calling the shots as usual.
–and the punctuation?
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL ?
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, GHOST PROTOCOL ?
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL ?
Really, how is this even a title?
Wait, Mission: Impossible is one word now?
MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL ???
this tittle is waaaay better than “The Dark Knight Rises” … smh
I do wonder why they didn’t simply go for Mission:Impossible IV. It does what it says on the label, etc.
It is really doubtful that people can take Tom Cruise seriously anymore. The man is a nutjob major. Really, one need only mention “Mr. Cruise, come out of the closet” and everyone who has seen South Park will laugh.
Um, why not just call it MI: 4?
After all, it is the last time they can use the shorter title without confusing it with the British Intelligence Service.
Is there some sort of automatic lame-o-meter when a franchise has numbers in the title after two sequels?
It could be worse. At least they didn’t call it Quantum of Solace. Another title by people who think they know better than everyone else. But ya know with Bond and Craig you could probably have called the movie Fart Balloons and made bank. Not so much for Mission Impossible and Cruise. What were they thinking?
yeah, but at least Quantum of Solace was the name of a James Bond short story. So the producers can be given some forgiveness for that.
Quantum of Solace is the name of one of Ian Fleming’s Bond stories and is a title relevant to the movie in question.
