Now that Rooney Mara got the Lisbeth Salander role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Emma Stone got the Gwen Stacy role in Spider-Man and Sandra Bullock is in talks for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, the next juicy female role is the lead in the Ridley Scott-directed 3D Alien prequel at 20th Century Fox. I’m told that the studio and Scott have had general meetings with a number of actresses. I’ve heard that list includes the studio’s Wall Street 2 star Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish (Scott directed her in A Good Year). But another intriguing possibility I’ve heard more than once today is that Noomi Rapace also met and left a strong impression.
The actress, who played Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish adaptation, met Scott and Fox before she signed on to co-star in the Sherlock Holmes sequel. I’m told that meetings are ongoing with cast and no decisions have been made, but I could see Rapace taking a Ripley-esque turn in space. Below is a recent trailer for her final turn in the Salander role, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest:

Go, Noomi!
This would be one hell of a match-up, indeed. However, let’s hope the script does the pair justice, and that 3D gimmicks(?) take a major backseat to story/performance.
I don’t think Ridley’s touching this. Rothman and his goons has their fingers on the chicken switch over the budget. If this is greenlit with Ridley’s proposed vision untouched then we’re going to have a major sci-fi film to rank among the greats.
Am beyond thrilled @ this.
is ridley gonna bring back walter and david?
Didn’t Walter and David have something to do with the other versions that got worse with each iteration until the franchise got a stake driven into its heart.
The only other person I think they should consider is REBECCA HALL. She would KILL IT……
What the hell is a noomi? And shouldn’t we be more concerned with giving roles to American actors rather than outsourcing jobs.
Maybe if American actors spent a bit of time honing their “craft” rather than their boobs, you wouldn’t have to ask these questions
I agree.
Exactly!
Noomi Rapace is phenomenal!
shes actually the vest fit for the part . The rest are skinny girls and not the right type .
America doesn’t have a Noomi..but we certainly need one. Like fine diamonds exporting is our only option. We export this film around the world and get back many times the cost of her salary. If the movie tanks there wouldn’t be other films. This will not happen though and if you ever watched her in a movie you wouldn’t ask who she was. She will likely live here a lot of the year so kindly refer to Noomi Rapace as our newest LEGAL alien.
You know what would be cool? If Deadline consistently used “stereo” or “stereoscopic” to mean “you have to wear those annoying glasses when you watch it in the theaters” and “3D” to mean “animated using CGI a la Pixar”.
That would be silly… “Stereo”, “Stereoscopic” and “3D” in the realm of films are all pretty much synonymous with “you have to wear those annoying glasses when you watch it in the theaters”, even to a casual moviegoer.
and… 3D has absolutely nothing to do with “animated using CGI a la Pixar”. Though there are Pixar movies (and the like) that are now in 3D, there are a veritable ton of Pixar and other CG animated movies that have absolutely nothing to do with 3D.
3D is 3D [period] natively shot or converted
CG or CGI animated is just that, they’re separate technologies.
Hey, Miffy! Funny comment. In jest, yeah?
If not, take your xenophobic isolationism and shove it where Glenn Beck lives.
Arrrrrrrrgh
I WANT Abbie Cornish, RIDLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It will be interesting to see if or which of the various interpretations of the Space Jockey’s species in the novelisations, graphic novels, etc they will use.
In Alan Dean Foster’s novelisation of Alien, Ash describes the Space Jockey’s race as a noble people and hopes that mankind will encounter them under more pleasant circumstances. It also states that they were larger, stronger and possibly more intelligent than humans. Foster’s novelisation states that the Jockey was trying to warn humans away from the Xenomorphs.
In Steve Perry’s Earth Hive, the Space Jockey’s race are referred to as collectors because they collect Xenomorph eggs. In Michael Jan Friedman’s Aliens: Original Sin, the race is referred to as the Mala’kak. According to the comic book The Destroying Angels, the Xenomorphs caused the species to become extinct 1.6 million years ago.
Mark Verheiden’s Aliens graphic novel depict the Space Jockey’s race as malevolent; they refrain from attacking humans due to their immense hatred of their common enemy, the Xenomorphs, but they intend to wipe out and/or enslave humanity once their war with the Xenomorphs is over. In the series, a Space Jockey-like creature communicates telepathically with humans.
I’m sure the great American director Ridley Scott would second that.
Swedes: stay in Sweden! The Americans don’t need you. Take back IKEA, too, and Volvo. Every man for himself. Who needs things like coffee, electronics, or even oil anyway. America will just do FINE on Coke & Mc Donalds (has to be renamed, sounds to Scottish). Especially Hollywood has no interest whatsoever in selling anything outside of the US.
As I’m rather sure you didn’t get my humor (because it’s German): that was irony. But this disclaimer was for you, specifically. I’m also rather sure that most people who read this site got it, which gives me hope.
I believe Ridley Scott is British.
Ok I have to go with this. Carey Mulligan? As some strong badass chick who fights with giants monsters and wins at the end? Are they for real? If the wind blows then Carey will vanish with him
It will be like that 2012 movie. Where everything falls but only our heroes always sneak past it. Which looked beyond ridiculous. And it will be laughable how thin and small Carey will miraculously escape Aliens every time.
Abbie Cornish? Who? I can already see millions of people who will want to see Abbie Cornish… It’s ridiculous that she is even considered.
I wonder what is Jessica Biel thinking? All those other young actresses take role after role and poor Jessica sits jobless or get some straight to DVD roles. And have to watch how Timbelake hets all the glory from Social Network. And he didn’t even let her to walk with him on the carpet. Not once
Noomi Rapace? I actually wouldn’t mind. She can play badass and i will believe her. But they need to add some famous actors as supporting. Because she will not drive to movie viewers. Someone like RDJ, or even Shia LaBeaf. He will bring viewers. But i laugh every time i imagine Shia as soldier. He should play some helper of some smart scientist. Or some spoiled rich kid who accidentally gets on board.
Your suggestions are solid…except for Shia. I wasn’t really big on Noomi until I saw a flipcam interview with her over at TOH (Anne Thompson’s blog). She is friggin sexy as hell! So I’m there if she’s cast.
The supporting actors would need to be a lot more commercial: Chris Evans, Jason Statham, James Franco (comic relief), etc.
I loved that interview. I can see her doing well in some indie rom com too. I reckon she’s a very intelligent and committed actress. They’re a rare breed these days!
They don’t “need” to add any name actors, at all. Ever heard of any of the actors in DISTRICT 9?
How about the 1977 STAR WARS?
Or even JAWS?
Or, for that matter, the original ALIEN?
Grow some balls and make the best possible film, with whomever.
Reply to Tom Jeffries…
In your above argument, you started of strong with the example of District 9. However, you crashed and burned on the rest of the list. The following actors were already well known (world-wide) at the time of the specified films:
Star Wars: Alec Guiness (very, very famous), Peter Cushing (very famous)– both appearing in films to numerous to list here.
Jaws: Robert Shaw (famous): From Russia with Love, Battle of the Bulge, A Man for all Seasons, The Sting
Roy Scheider (famous): Klute, The French Connection, The Seven-Ups.
Alien:
Ian Holm (moderately famous. at leats within the U.K.)
Tom Skerrit (moderately famous): M*A*S*H, Harold and Maude, Big Bad Mama,
John Hurt (semi famous): Watership Down, Midnight Express, The Lord of the Rings.
Harry Dean Stanton (famous, at least as a character actor): Cool Hand Luke, Kelly’s Heroes, Dillinger, The Missouri Breaks, Up in Smoke.
Americans can’t have it both ways: if you believe in capitalism you believe in hiring the best person for the job, be it an American or otherwise.
Today I am proud to be a Swede! *sobbing with joy*.
… But to be frank, I would still prefer Gemma, if I had to choose…
There is only one Ellen Ripley, and that’s Sigourney Weaver. Noomi Rapace, Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, or any other foreign actress couldn’t touch her performance with a 10,000 foot pole.
firebrand, I don’t think they are playing Ripley. Just another female character.
I love the idea of Noomi Rapace!! She would kick some serious ass as a Ripley-like character. Can’t picture the other girl mentioned AT ALL.
i hope noomi gets it. but she can’t carry the film alone. ridley needs to surround her with quality actors like jeremy renner or adrien brody. and maybe michelle rodriguez as the modern day vasquez.
I recognize that it’s technical and nitpicky, AJ, but I work in VFX and 3D means created with 3D CAD-style software like Maya and Lightwave and rendered to 2D with RenderMan, Mental Ray, or another package. Whether you’re watching one plate total or one plate for each eye, it’s STILL 2D – 3D in this context would be something like holography. Putting “3D” in a title is a useful exaggeration, but saying that a film is 3D in a writup is simply nonspecific and probably inaccurate. Either call it stereo(scopic) or CG – or both. The craft behind what you call 3D is stereoscopy (or stereography, depending on your pov) and what you’re suggesting is like calling cinematography itself “2D”. It’s not specific or accurate enough for professionals.
I thought production had stalled because of a deadlock over the budget? I can never understand why casting begins before a movie has even been greenlit. Its a bit like buying furniture before you have an apartment.
Nice choice…but Ridley’s first forerunner, Gemma Arterton was better suited for my taste – especially after I saw her in The Disappearance of Alice Creed.
there sure are a lot of racists posting about this…pathetic. America is a country of imports, and we are stronger for it. there aren’t bad races, only bad people, i know its hard to understand but try not to view the world in such an utterly stupid fashion. Really its like talking to a child, ‘keep american movies american!’ haha, I mean how do you even respond to such a comment…such ignorance it’s hard to even begin.
Being Swedish I just laugh out loud on your opinions about a Swede performing in American assembly-line made movies.
What´s wrong with you? Don´t you like money?
You already got Stellan and Alexander Skarsgård, Lena Olin and Peter Stormare. Three of them have worked for Ingmar Bergman.
Noomi Rapace, has as far as I know, not (God bless her!).
But she is probably the one who got the look, the name and guts to be really successful. She is an extrodinary actress – way beyond more talanted than the beautiful but so booring Greta Garbo.
If you like the rest of world que up and buy tickets – you should welcome her in to your predictable world of making movies.
If you like to make money, t.i?
With best regards
Marie
i love you noomi rapace…. excelent casting
