BREAKING NEWS… Mel Gibson won’t be appearing in The Hangover Part II despite web reports he’d play a tattoo artist in the Todd Phillips-directed pic. Warner Bros and its financing partner Legendary Pictures released a statement from Phillips. “I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew,” Phillips said.
I think the world of Phillips, but I didn’t find it admirable when WME dropped Gibson as a client, and I think this development is disappointing. Mike Tyson, who was convicted or rape and served time for it, can be in The Hangover, but Gibson can’t, because he made an anti-Semitic remark during a DUI arrest and had some scary voice mails bared against his wishes? Stars still flock to work with Roman Polanski, even though he can’t make movies in the U.S. because he fled after admittedly having a sexual encounter with a 13-year old girl. Clearly, Gibson has been his own worst enemy, but as a director of films like Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, there are few better.

and, with that, zach galifinakis goes waaaaaay up in my esteem.
Me, too. And Mr. Fleming, I agree that actors/newscasters should be able to have a personal life and their own opinions but, anti-semitic diatribes and violent phones calls (and alleged actions) do not make for a stable or upstanding human being. Granted, not a requirement for actors but people also have the right not to want to do business with such people.
But raping a child does make a stand-up guy to you? Douche Nozzle!
But rape, domestic violence, and gnawing on a man’s ear… that’s kosher, huh?
So Alec Baldwin should never work again?
I don’t think he denies this, in fact, it seems like he supports this view. However, I think he was pointing out the glaring undeniable hypocracy. Fact: Rape is 1,000,000,000,000 times worse than an anti-semetic remark and/or the very worst voice mail any could imagine. Question: How is it that people are okay with rape, but draw the line at a hateful remark. It is baffling.
How is a cast doing a movie as disgusting as Hangover claim anything even remotely related to “moral grounds”.
Hypocrisy does baffle me to no end.
highest grossing R rated comedy of all time. you are the minority. go back to church.
Why do women always talk wrong about movies like Hangover, calling them nasty, mean, etc.? Go watch Swing Vote and shut the hell up!
Jack and Ian are retards. Nevermind them.
Just because the movie is the highest grossing R rated comedy of all time doesn’t mean it isn’t disgusting. The majority of people like dick and fart jokes.
The majority of people also do a lot of other dumb shit that’s immoral. Does it make it any more right?
I also don’t remember her saying ANYTHING about being moral, simply that fools like you who endorse such a shitty movie do not have the right to commentate on what is or isn’t moral, since your view of it is warped in the first place. Be gone, trolls.
You have a point. Rape is definitely worse than any voice mail or anti-semitic remark.
However, Mel Gibson is so much bigger than Mike Tyson. I didn’t even know that he raped somebody, because I don’t care about Mike Tyson. Mel Gibson is responsible for making some of the best cinema in history. So the public reacts to his actions more, because they hold him to a higher standard. The cast of the movie probably picked up on this, and decided to ‘make a splash’ by denying him the part. It’s all business to them.
Honestly, do not like Mel the Christian anti-semite misogynist but do think it wrong to punish him more than the law allows — this was/is a low brow comedy and he’d be great in it – at the end of the day – hire the actor best for the story – leave your editorial/moral opinions at the door. Bad move – and makes me hate ZG more than Mel which is A LOT.
I know Zach G is such a hack. And really looking at that preview of his movie with Robert Downey Jr, it is so going to flop. I mean Downey will have to carry it for there to be a chance. But Zack G IS A BUM. HE IS NOT A STAR. HE CAN”T CARRY A FILM. HE IS NOT FUNNY.
In order to have a John Candy/Steve Martin or De Niro/Grodin type of buddy road movie is that there has to be two stars of that bring something to the table and Zack G is a friggin bum and America will reject him as they’ve done with Seth Rogan. He is not an equal with Robert Downey Jr so that’s why the film will flop. Of course the film isn’t funny, but it could be saved if they had two adequate stars in the film.
You should go back to the rock you were living under and enjoy your 80 movies. Zach has made a bigger name for himself than grodin could ever hope for with his generation. You know what grodin’s prolly more famous for, the Beethoven movies, pretty damn low. Zach is a bankable comedian appearing in five movies in the last two years along with a hbo show. And then you go after Seth rogen? You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about.
Dan, the rock that’s being lived under is in fact YOUR home. Maybe Zach G made a bigger name for himself than Charles Grodin, but Grodin didn’t work and operate in the age of Netflix, iTunes and Facebook, did he? The Hangover may have exposed Zach to a large audience, but before you go foolishly spouting about what a bankable star he is, he needs to actually prove that by carrying a movie on his own. The Hangover had TV star Ed Helms and the heavily advertised cameo with Tyson– I don’t think many average film goers saw that movie purely out of recognition of Zach.
And defending Seth Rogen might be the thing that showed how little about the industry you actually know. Every Seth Rogen movie since Knocked Up has gone down in grosses. Here’s the proof:
Knocked Up… $148.7 million
Pineapple Express… $87.3 million
Zack & Miri Make … $31.4 million
Observe & Report … $24 million
Funny People … $51.8
So there’s proof that Rogen is losing his box office draw. In fact, Funny People saw his grosses go up, but since he shared the screen with Adam Sandler, who almost always brings in huge money, one could argue that Rogen actually hurt a movie that could have made a lot more. He’s not Pauly Shore, exactly, but America is looking like they’re about done with him. Try doing some research before you go telling people they live under a rock.
And P.S., Gibson is a huge talent and people need to remember that these celebs are followed 24/7. WE ALL say stupid, hurtful things and get into fights with our loved ones. The press just isn’t there to make sure when we do that everyone hears about it. When I go to a movie, I go to be swept away by good storytelling. I don’t need to know that all the actors I’m watching are morally righteous people in real life, or I’d be hard-pressed to ever have any fun at the theater. So, Dave, go back to watching your “80 movies.”
rejected Seth Rogan…come on now junior thats an ignorant statement that mother f@cker has done more successful things in his short career then you will ever do in your lifetime. Hell, maybe even in your kids lifetime if hes as ignorant as you.
Zach is talented at what he does.
Honestly in regards to the whole Mel thing…People are who they are and in real time talk no one can know anyones true thoughts and what they are truely like inside their mind. Im not condoning the actions of Mel Gibson or Mike Tyson, but what should only matter should be if the movie is good. Its a movie not a un meeting.
I would pay to see Mel Gibson in Porkys VI before I would shell out a dime to see Zack Galakaniakisianberg try to act… or be funny.
P.S. – Why is Todd Phillips still working at this point? I think it would be appropriate that he never get another directing job in this town again.
The Hangover was the R Rated comedy that made the most money of all time!! Why wouldn’t someone hire him? Not a lot of logic in your statement…
“Passion of the Christ” made tons of cash too. That didn’t stop Mel Gibson’s career from racing down the drain.
I’d say he’s right, and Phillips out to be back peddling right now.
Because Phillips’ The Hangover was one of the highest grossing movies of 2009 (along with being the highest grossing R-rated movie of 2009) and is the 3rd highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. Road Trip, Old School, and Starsky & Hutch were pretty successful as well.
While we can debate about the quality of a film, the facts are facts. And the fact is that Phillips makes studios quite a bit of money with his films, his films are in demand (particularly his raunch R-rated comedies), and so they’re going to keep hiring him.
It’s a simple case of common business sense.
Dana: Your anti-Semitism has been noted, douchebag!
Glad someone else thought so too.
Calling people anti-Semitic for saying they like Gibson better than Zach G shows you don’t know what that term means. And adding “douche” at the end of your point shows you’re not an intelligent person with an opinion you’d like to express, but rather a child. I almost never post comments in these forums, but good God some of you are just so petty and pathetic at expressing your points. Think it through and leave readers with actual thoughts, not insults chucked at those people who simply don’t agree with you. Douche.
100% agree!
although I am not sure it was Zach who torpedoed the Mel cameo.
Good for Zach for standing up to what I’m sure was enormous pressure from this director, and possibly others on Mel’s bully team. No one realizes how much strength and courage that takes, especially opposing a man worth almost a billion dollars.
While many in this thread, as well as Todd Phillips himself, are trying to JUSTIFY putting Mel up for this role by comparing the situation to “Mike Tyson” or “Roman Polanski”, what everyone needs to realize here is that these people did something wrong, paid for it in jail time and felony charges, and went through DECADES of being isolated and ostracized by the Hollywood community.
MEL wants to have his cake and eat it too – but he is not ready to apologize, and it is highly suspect that he believes he was in the right in the first place.
What this creature said – though not physical as in the above two cases, is abominable, and giving him the same respect as non Jew-hating actors excuses the behavior and sets a HORRIBLE example for ANYONE in this industry.
Methinks I’m probably typing too much anyway, as Mel Gibson really doesn’t care one way or another – he’s worth $850 million, so realistically he could shoot his OWN “Hangover”, get distribution and throw in a “Directed/Produced by Alan Smithee” and no one would even know he’s profiting from it.
Long story short, this is very appropriate, and HIGHLY respectable of the actors who went on record to vote “no”.
may you never have a romantic partner take what you say out of context for the world to behold and make unsubstantiated claims on top of it. then you will experience what mel is going through right now.
How exactly to Roman Polansky pay for raping a 13 year old girl? Mel Gibson said some offesnsive stuff…Polansky and Tyson actually physically assaulted someone…yeah, Mel’s much worse. Your commentary is foolish.
No, it wasn’t. You’re apparently just a racist.
Ahhhhh, yes. Racism, sweet racism. The charge that is the silver bullet of the left. Nice comeback.
Ah… here we go again… “You don’t agree with me?! Well, then… you must be a racist! If you prefer white New England clam chowder over red Manhattan chowder, you’re a racist! If you prefer white chocolate over dark, you’re a racist! My mommy says anyone who doesn’t think what i think is a doo-doo head!”
Why does everyone keep talking about Zack Galafaniakdfiads? This article doesn’t mention him. So why is it assumed he protested to Gibson being in the movie.
And even if he did why are congratulating him? So he has no tolerance for bigotry? Good, but I think its more moral and stand up to have no tolerance for Rape.
Zack Galafanackisais He’s OK with Rape.
But supporting open Racist Spike Lee, Rapist Mike Tyson, And Rapist/Pedophile Polanski is ok right???
Double standards are a pesky thing.
By the way, I am willing to be they voted Obama… He attended an openly Anti-Semite Church and his record in the WH has proven he has no love for the Jewish people.
Hypocrisy is even peskier.
Come on. Go back to to Redstate. Or better yet, Stormfront.
shut the fuck up about Obama, Alan. This article and issue have nothing to do with him. I’m so sick of you right-wing political junkies mucking up this site with your irrelevant comments.
Obviously, none of you have been “BLACKLISTED”!!!
Not enough people are agreeing with you – so I will. I’ve been thinking about this article since I first read it, trying to wrap my mind around the difference between Polanski and Tyson’s crimes vs. Mel Gibson’s. The problem is they are three specific cases:
Tyson has done time. He has done time in the press, and he has done time in actual, literal prison. He has paid his debt to society, which is exactly what we taxpayers locked him away to do. Did anyone see the documentary made about him last year? When he was convicted of rape and was winning bout after bout, he was a KID! As a grown man, he has mellowed, atoned, and become a respectable member of society. My heart goes out to him for the horrible death of his daughter last year – much as it did to his wife at the time if his arrest (20 years ago!).
Polanski is a touchier situation, as he has not apologized. The man feels no remorse for what he did. So, in my mind, the difference is this: the “13-year old”, now grown, HAS FORGIVEN HIM. What started as a photo shoot was NEVER pedophilia. Inappropriate? Absolutely. But is the man a sexual predator? No, he’s an artist. And, much like Woody Allen, he stuck it where it should never have gone. And much like Woody Allen, it was not a trend or a mental defect, but rather a case of his own creativity and, dare I say, EGO, going WAY overboard. Again, check out the documentary made about him that was on HBO last year. While never having done time in prison, he has also done time in the media, and, lest we forget, is still not allowed in the United States…
Which brings us to Mel Gibson. Anti-Semite? Alcoholic? Domestic abuser? Yep. Apology? Nope. Any shade of remorse, atonement, regret or recovery? Nope. Any inkling, at any point, either in the anti-jewish remarks made to the police officer or to his WIFE on those voicemails that he had done ANYTHING, EVER remotely incorrect or even “mildly regrettable”? No? Then fuck him, Dude. Do your time like the others. You’ll get your comeback, but you may have to admit some flaws first.
Two more things before I stop typing, glad to have backed up the one person making sense in this comment board:
1. This has nothing to do with liberals, conservatives, Democrats, Republicans, or anything of the sort. The internet, and these movies, are INTERNATIONAL. So, to readers from countries that AREN’T the USA, sorry about those other commenters. They know not what they do.
2. Tom Cruise. HE’S nuts. HE’S the one everyone should be ganging up on. Overly violent, like Tyson? Overly sexual, like Polanski? Overly CHRISTIAN, like Mel Gibson? Two words: Tom Cruise. The others are minor compared to that nutbar.
Peace, dipshits.
idiot
Isn’t this the same Zach Galifinakis seen getting a BJ from a middle aged hooker in the end credits of the first movie? Yeah, that guys a role model.
Uh Huh. Like anyone cares about your esteem. As that great oscar winning actor Bugs Bunny once said: “What a maroon!”
Guess I will skip it. I like Mel and he didn’t attack a random driver on the highway with a nine iron.
On the other hand I do not like Zach. He has comic timing but in real life he is hateful and intolerant.
Mel isn’t box office poison. He always fills theaters. I love Jodie Foster too.
There sure are a lot of hate filled people posting here who want to be deciders and little gods over other peoples lives. I am sure you are all qualified to do so by your own impeccable lives and choices if examined with a microscope.
They should put Mel Gibson in the movie it would’ve been hilarious. My hopes feel as if they were put in a trash bag and thrown against a tree.
I am replacing my Hangover 2 boycott with a pledge to see anything and everything Zach G appears in! And for those bashing him for not keeping Tyson out of HO1, he didn’t yet have the clout to do so in that flick. I’m no fan of rapist Tyson, but at least he did his time. And Mike Fleming, you highlight your stupidity not only by defending Mel, but by referring to Polanski’s “sexual encounter” with a 13-year-old. Hardly an “encounter” — he drugged her and raped her. As for Todd Phillips, you charmer, who are you stunt-casting next — Michael Vick?
Did everyone forget Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist? No one (including the cast) seemed to mind or object to Mike. Seems like a bunch of hypocrites to me.
That’s only right as well as it is just.
Mel Gibson = BO Poison. Officially.
Sure, it’s ok to have Mike Tyson a RAPIST in part one. Polanski CELEBRATED at the oscars and NO ONE on this board says anything. the guy had sex with a 13 year old girl!!!
unbelievable.
ANAL RAPE with a 13 year old whom he had previously gotten DRUNK on champange, AND he gave her a QUALUDE (strong sedation drug used for recreational purposes) Then against her will he raped her Vaginally, he had ORAL and Anal sex with her while she was pretty helpless to fight him off. He’s a little man but she was a LITTLE girl! Plus he did this in Jack Nicholsons’ Home putting Jack in danger of being involved with his disgusting crime!
MEL Gibson is 10 times the man ANY of these nasty POS actors in this barely tolerable toilet humor movie! SHAME on them! Wait till some Gold-Digger gets one over on ANY of them.. Let’s see how long it takes for them to change their attitudes.
HEY Hollywierd, THIS scam (edited tapes, and photo-shopped pictures) can happen to ANY one of you! I assue you it could!
I shudder at the thought of EVER having my angriest moments (secretly) recorded and put on display for the world to scrutinize, just think about that for one quick second…
That woman is a gypsy scam artist, she goaded him, betrayed him, then decieved him, he’s an idiot for not being smarter… but she is just down-right EVIL! Do your research on HER, I welcome you to “google” Oksana..
And you are box office gold?
Mel Gibson = BO Poison. Officially.
Not to me and millions of others. Hollyweird never forgave him for the Passion of the Christ. It also didn’t help that after they tried everything to trash him and that movie he made 500 million from it.He has been on the Jewish Hollywood hit list ever since. Oliver Stone said some very offensive antisemitic things and not a peep from the Hypocrites in Hollywood. But then again he is a Marxist Obama supporter and part Jewish.
some people claim that its Ari Emanual who has kept this going, and Ari runs , rules Hollywood…Mel turned Ari down many years ago, and I guess no-one had the balls to stand up to him like Mel did , so Ari has never recovered from it.Ari is Jewish,I dont have anything against jewish people only those who use their power to hurt others, which is what this man does, I think he will hang Zach out to dry. Ari’s brother is Rahm who at this moment is running for mayor of Chicago…what I have said is a matter of just looking things up.
Ari , said about about hiring WEsley Snipes for a movie where there was a lot of swimming, he wouldnt hire him “as everyone knows black men cant swim “. Ari makes a lot of biased remarks.IMO He tried to stop Mel from making the Passion, but Mel made it with his own money, it made millions, so needless to say Ari was and is livid.
Thank you Zack Galifianakis! Jodie Foster you are dead to me.
Nice to see you are one of those “tolerant liberals”. You people are nothing but hypocrites.
What?!!! What!!! I don’t love you anymore bugthecat.
So, you are the type of “friend” who abandons a person when they don’t live up to you or the Hollywood elite’s standard? I am glad you are no friend of mine. In fact, you are dead to me. Imbecile.
Poor little progressives. In a snit over this eh? Go back down in your mother’s basement and play with your playstation and leave the thinking to real Americans.
really? leave the thinking to “real Americans” huh? you disgrace this country you claim to love you disgusting plebeian.
whoareyou if you are the real Americans I am glad I am Canadian. you are a disgrace to the American people
Good choice!
Todd….make ur movie dude. Fuck. You sound about as powerless as a writer.
Agree. Others have done way worse. I do not agree with Gibson’s actions but he should be in the movie. As for Jodie foster being “dead” to somebody…honestly shut the hell up. If one of your best friends did something bad wouldn’t you try to take time to see the good in them. Damn, grow up BugtheCat.
exactly… if you want Gibson in your film, then you should have him in the movie.
If overrated, one-note Zack Galifinakis was so dead set against Gibson, he must obviously find working with a convicted wife-beater and rapist more than just palatable, but he must rejoice in that. I didn’t see people tripping when Victor Salva directed Powder, who had a child molester jacket and keeps directing films…
Does it go to the larger point that you’re held more accountable for your beliefs than your actions…
I was disgusted when I watched Hangover and saw Mike Tyson in it.None of the actors had the power to say they wouldn’t work with Tyson. Zach isn’t the only person who was against Mel.They can get 50 other people to do a cameo
Don’t forget Mel’s actions. He’s Admitted punching his GF in the face twice while she was holding their baby and terrorizing her and her kids for a year.He broke out a giant window with a chair to go after the GF. His teenage son was there.Another time he was raging for hours, then left the house. He later emailed the GF, he had to leave because he knew if he stayed he would have physically hurt the baby. And he did all this when he was sober. His E-mails and texts back it all up
You make a good point about Mike Tyson. Maybe the actors didn’t have power at that point to veto his involvement until after the Hangover had been a big hit. They have every right to say they don’t want to work with Mel, it’s not their fault, it’s Mel’s. He brought it on himself with his actions.
Actors have every chance to think what they say, and to act in a film or decide not to, based on moral reasons. They had the power to veto. They could have walked off at any point in the production. Just like they were threatening to do now. It is a moral decision who to work with every time you work.
“You sound about as powerless as a writer.”
FUNNY!
At least the cast and crew had a lot more sense than Phillips did. That lowlife Gibson doesn’t deserve a handout from his industry. Wonder why the DA hasn’t pressed charges yet.
Maybe the DA hasn’t pressed charges because they’re, like, unsubstantiated, out of context and presented by a malicious little gold digger.
Try thinking for a change Betty El, you might find it refreshing.
You’re an idiot
He would have been great in the movie because he is a great actor. Clearly he’s struggled with some personal issues of late and I think it’s bullshit that everybody wants to be your best friend when you’re on top, and when you hit pretty much rock bottom, everybody drops like flies or pulls out the knives. And before all of you start screaming about his racist talk, etc. Think about how drunk he was when he said those things. Do you consider them to be the truth despite the fact that he said them while wildly intoxicated and obviously in the throes of a personal meltdown? I, for one, am willing and ready to give Mel Gibson another chance which is perhaps out of fashion, but I don’t really care. I’m sick of the Mel bashing.
All good points, but it is just too soon. He clearly has issues he needs to deal with and he is in the middle of a mess. People aren’t going to accept him in a come back until he takes some kind of responsibility for his actions and demonstrates that he gets it and is willing to (or has) changed. As far as his latest meltdown, he still seems consumed and seems determined to take down the mother of his child.
A drunk man’s words are a sober man’s thoughts. Mel Gibson is a bigot through and through.
Good words, and I agree.
I have been drunk a few times in my life and never so easily and repeatedly thrown out racial epithets. His racism has a long history (and lineage). If you want to help him privately, fine. But I don’t support his success regardless of his acting and directing skills.
so you have never done anything you haven’t been proud of or said anything that maybe you shouldn’t have said when you were drunk?
amazing. let’s hear it for jesus christ here folks.
Santa, you’re such an idiot…..but you do make me laugh… keep posting
A lot of folks expressing chagrin over this because of the public debacle of Gibson’s personal life, might not also be considering that there are folks who have worked with him and found him abominable to be around. It’s not just his public image — it could well be his reputation on set. I know someone who worked with him years ago and swore she never would again — and this, before his public problems of recent years.
Absolutely on target!!!! The world needs to love more and
judge less. Too many hypocrites that need to get the mote out
of their own eye!!
“personal problems of hate” YEAH, with an ex girlfriend he dumped. Duh. Who hasn’t had problems like that?
Thank God. I guess they realized how backlash it would have. And how that will overshadow the movie. Because everyone from blogers to critics would talk not about the movie. Every review would start and finish from Mel Gibson.
Ans it very interesting: “…this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew”. I guess that even cast members didn’t want to have anything with Gibson.
OUCH…I guess this put’s Mike Tyson one level above Mel Gibson in terms of acting ability.
Indeed. So a rapist gets to be in the Hangover, but not a drunk who cusses? What utter bullshit. Hollywood once again trying to act like their the moral highground of standards. I was actually looking forward to seeing what he would do in the movie, but now…looks like I’ll just pass on Hangover 2, considering it will be the same shit as the last movie.
Good point, Hollywood falls all over itself to be best friends with paedophile rapist Polanski.
They’re not squicked with the idea of working with the creepy Woody Allen, yet they go faux-righteous on Gibson.
What’s the deal?
You use the word “they” as though we’re talking about all of the same people. “hollywood” is an industry made up of thousands of people. Some love polanski, some are sickened by him. This board is evidence there are different opinions on Mel Gibson as well.
Only in the very bigoted and very small minded.
so having a rapist in the movie is OK, but a racist is unforgiveable? I hate liberals.
He also beat his girlfriend and said he would burn her house down after she blows him, which sound at least a little like sexual coercion. He’s just an all-around great guy.
He may of said it but Tyson actually did it.
what did she say before she started taping the conversation
Hello! EDITED tapes? Can we say EDITED TAPES?
why do you hate liberals and what did ‘they’ do in this instance to so offend you?
Isn’t it obvious with all this vitriol against Mel? What did he do to you?
I’m a liberal and I think Gibson should be in the movie. Everybody deserves another chance.
It IS obviouse and many of us are SICK of IT!
Who buys the tickets? I think Mel proved this with his Passion of the Christ (which I personally didn’t like much) Made him a billion. Who buys the tickets?
so everybody is coming to mel’s defense because he’s not a rapist. congratulations. very logical dude.
right on, stud!
It IS logical, thank you for saying so.
And I hate that lately this board has been overrun with neocons who don’t know anything about the movie business, other than they want to get on here and air their grievances with it and all the “evil liberals”, so I guess we’re all unhappy.
Shouldn’t have had support from you either Todd, or Robinov or anybody else.
Well, I can certainly understand some people not wanting to work with him. It is odd, though, that someone like Mike Tyson is considered ok, but Mel Gibson is not.
I suppose it has to do with personal beliefs. When a person does something wrong, physically, to another person, we tend to see it as horrible, but are more apt to forgive as long as we don’t personally know the victim. However, when someone directly insults our beliefs or culture and offends us, we have an extremely hard time letting it go.
Ultimately, the last thing you want is an upset and uncomfortable crew, so this decision does make sense.
You’re right. It is hypocritical that people refuse to work with Gibson when they’ll work with Tyson and Polanski. They should refuse to work with those guys too.
That says it all. LMAO.
I’d bet Todd is just trying to throw the audiences and the media off. The whole story got way to big publicity for it to be a fun moment when we first laid eyes on Gibson in the film. He’ll turn up and so will someone else of note.
There was a previous rumor that Zach Galifianakis was in “deep protest” about something happening with Hangover 2, although no specifics were mentioned:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/trouble_on_the_set_of_the_hangover_2_zach_galifianakis_in_deep_protest/
That would be really ironic if true since he used racial slurs/homophobic comments/anti-Semitic comments in his stand up act regularly. Granted not in the same way Gibson used them but still ironic.
Zach’s sense of humor may have gone over your head a little, buddy.
just thought it was funny he would be the one complaining.
Well said, Mike.
No. Not well said, Mike. I am a Christian, with no – what was it Gibson said? “No dog in this fight?” (FOR CHRIST SAKE, HE APPROVES OF DOG-FIGHTING TOO!!!!!?????) but I was utterly offended by Gibson’s anti-semitic, anti-sugary titted women tirade. The man is pond slime and should be the recipient of an old fashioned shunning, because the stocks and public flogging have been abolished.
I don’t understand what ANY of these cretins are EVER allowed back in front of a camera, but then, this is a business where there ARE third acts. I just read Ovitz’s name in the trades. He’s about to come back, too.
Sssshhhhhheeeeesssssh.
Dont you know talent supercedes morality and humanity?
True talent springs from humanity and morality. Tom Hanks will never call a woman “Sugartits.” Tom Hanks is a real movie star, like Gable, Cooper and Douglas. At his worst, could you picture John Wayne even allowing words like Gibson’s to be heard in public?
you are talking another era. all flaws were glossed over back in the day. John Wayne for one had unique racial ideas that were published in a Playboy interview. Yet, he still worked.
as for Tom Hanks: Unless you live with him behind closed doors or Rita has an axe to grind, you will never know what the man is truly like, only the public perception.
You said it better than anyone, anotherwgamember.
Actually, it was divulged a few years ago that Mel Gibson was not the one who said “sugar-tits.” It was actually a Deputy who said it to a female at the Sheriff’s station, the Deputy who is suing the Department for discrimination based on his religion. This came out quite a while ago.
Mel hasn’t been through the boring cycle of apologizing, rehab, Oprah, and Ellen yet. If he can get over himself enough to show any sort of remorse for attacking his girlfriend and endangering his kid, then he’s got a good shot at redemption.
Mel, in the last tape, apologised to the ONLY person he needs to apologise to: Oksana. Additionally, in a published email (it’s somehwere on TMZ), she accpeted his apology and said he did nothing wrong. This was a private argument, so Oksana is the person who should be apologising for making a private matter public.
Mel will get his “get out of Hollywood jail” card if The Beaver is a hit…
Writing at present from somewhere that is not the US but still a very large movie-going territory, and knowing the people who have The Beaver, I can tell you that here there is a very major Mel Gibson-sized problem with releasing that film. Expecting audiences to be bowled over by such an amazing performance that they take the man to their hearts is a reach too far. You first have to persuade people to part with hard earned cash, in that they want to watch Gibson to begin with.
For the record on this thread, I also found Tyson’s cameo totally inappropriate. And how come nobody’s namechecked director Victor Salva yet? Convictions and jail time for child molestation and child pornography, for heaven’s sake! But he’s still working.
so pathetic, Mel is being blacklisted, well i think the movie will still offend plenty of people
Consider your other examples: Tyson, a monstrous and pathetic figure, was convicted and served time for his crime. Polanski, a disgusting and pathetic figure, served time and then fled when it became clear he was getting railroaded by a politically-motivated DA.
Gibson seems to be an unrepentant anti-semite who has not distanced himself from his own father’s Holocaust denials. You say he’s his own worst enemy? No, he’s an enemy to all of us who believe that bigotry needs to be shamed into the shadows. He doesn’t deserve jail time for his outbursts but he does deserve to be shunned. Bravo to the cast and crew of the Hangover 2.
you also forget that P of the C was anti-semitic to the hilt! and he wouldn’t acknowledge that. wouldn’t take responsibility for sowing seeds of hate. he’s an asshole of the highest order. glad he’s been banished.
What exactly was anti-semitic about Passion of Christ? Portraying that Jewish leaders were not fond of this rabble-rousing fake prophet and wanted him out of the way? That’s the story, whether fiction or non-fiction. Should Italians be offended because the Romans are depicted as blood-thirsty occupiers?
Should Palestinians be offended because they’re regularly portrayed as terrorists for simply wanting their homeland back?
“SIMPLY wanting their homeland back”? any credence you MIGHT have had is completely undone by that foolish statement
Your comments on Passion are immature and so ignorant that the rest of your post lacks any credibility. It wasn’t anti-semitic in the slightest. It was a showing how those in power did not want to believe or give up their power to a simple man who, at every moment called them out.
Now your history before opening your mouth and proving how little you know.
Pardon “know” your history.
Uhm… Polanski did his dirty deeds with children. There’s no coming back from that. Ever.
Well said!!
Gibson has apologized for what he said. He has said he knew it was wrong and was angry and drunk. So the question is are you an anti-catholic bigot and a liar. Fair question since there are two obvious unthruths in your comment.
I remember after Passion came out I worked with this liberal jewish person who lectured everyone in the office who driove an SUV because he thought they were evil. I had to sit there and listen to him go on and on about how much he hated that movie (this was before the DUI). Fifteen minutes in this guy starts in on the Catholic Church about calling jews Christ killers. As a devout Catholic growing up I knew this was not true. So despite the fact that I was deeply offended I tried to help him out as I had to work with him.
I explained that growig up I was taught that every sin I committed was another hammer on the nails holding Christ up on the cross. I explained that in the passion it is the congregation that plays the jewish population because at that time we christians came from the ranks of jewish people. That we asked for Barabas and played that part not to blame Jewish people but to remind ourselves of our own guilt. I said I understand how some Jewish people misniterpret this but it is a pivotal teaching of my religion and is not meant to make a statement about Jewish people.
I got told “Well the Catholic Church shouldn’t teach that”. I read the op ed critiques caling Gibson every evil name in the book and daring to lecture me on what Catholicism teaches and should teach. It was Bigotry then and it is Bigotry now in my opinion. I sicne learned that there is a minority of jewish people that hate Catholics. So you know what I take your deceptive comment and file it under that and I don’t care what you think.
That sucks. It wouldve been the perfect opportunity to restore his image (at least a little bit). And more importantly, it wouldve been hilarious.
really?!
you really believe that gibson has “that much” talent?
maybe if you lower the bar below ground and only include denizens of melibu.
let’s see in 20 years where his hatred has gotten him and let’s see how two of those films have finally become known for what they are. violent porn.
i applaud the cast and crew for shutting him down.
Well, considering Mel Gibson is the owner of multiple Oscars, yes, I would say he pretty fucking talented when it comes to movies. Real life, no.
Are you referring to Braveheart as violent porn? Cause I think you missed the story of that film… completely.
Thanks Mike, your assessment is right on the money. The only thing I’d add is that the first Hangover, went under the radar. In success the spotlight is much brighter for the sequel and with the brighter lights (and greater expense), comes more studio interference and cowardice. Robinov has never been a brave man.
Mike Tyson was set up by Don King. Mel Gibson was set up by alcohol
Saw the original, will now choose to pass on the sequel. Exactly how is Mike Tyson better than a presumed innocent Mel Gibson?
“Presumed innocent”? Can you explain? You do know he was arrested for his tirade, right? And is currently under investigation for his latest scandal?
in the court of law you are presumed innocent until rpoven guilty by a jury of your peers. no charges have been filed, no conviction made, so he is innocent.
Roman Polanski however is guilty.
Tyson is guilty and convicted.
Gibson’s dark side has been revealed, and I don’t excuse or condone what he did. But let’s be clear: “arrested” and “under investigation” are not “convicted.”
Not refuting your point at all, but moralism and rabid emotions can be bad bedfellows, so let’s all be cool with our rhetoric. Calling someone an idiot or a douche says more about you that it does about the person you are criticizing.
Cheers.
