BREAKING: While Peter Jackson and Warner Bros are figuring out where they’ll shoot back-to-back installments of The Hobbit, Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh have begun to set his cast for the ambitious projects that will begin shooting in February for release in December 2012 and 2013. The castings were announced by New Line Cinema COO/president Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros COO/president Alan Horn, MGM co-CEO Steve Cooper, and Jackson. As Deadline told you last week, Martin Freeman is set to play Bilbo Baggins, the adventurous Hobbit whose adventures and discovery of the One Ring leads the story up to The Lord of the Rings. Freeman has appeared in films ranging from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Hot Fuzz to Love Actually.
Jackson has cast several other significant Dwarf characters.
Richard Armitage (MI-5 and Captain America: The First Avenger) will play Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from a thieving dragon. Aidan Turner (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) will play Kili and Fili, members of the Company of Dwarves. Graham McTavish (Secretariat) will play Dwalin, John Callen (Power Rangers Jungle Fury) will play Oin; Stephen Hunter (All Saints) will play Bombur, and Mark Hadlow (King Kong) plays Dori, while Peter Hambleton (The Strip) will play Gloin. That casting has just beginning, and there will be many more opportunities for the kind of career-changing roles that went in the original trilogy to the likes of Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. None of this is set, but I’ve heard that James Nesbitt and David Tennant are up for roles, and that Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum, though I don’t believe they have made deals. Stephen Fry, Saoirse Ronan and Bill Nighy (as the voice of the dragon Smaug) are possible participants, and Aiden Turner was in contention for the Elf King before he got the role of Fili.
“Despite the various rumors and speculation surround this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us,” Peter Jackson said. There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave — exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.”
Of Armtage, Jackson said: “Richard is one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today and we know he is going to make an amazing Thorin Oakenshield. We cannot wait to start this adventure with him and feel very lucky that one of the most beloved characters in Middle Earth is in such good hands.”
On his choices of Turner and Kazinsky, Jackson said, “Rob is an extremely talented young actor with a huge career in front of him. I’m thrilled that he has agreed to take on the role of Fili. Besides his talent as an actor, Rob is also a champion sword fighter and I’m looking forward to seeing the damage he can do to a horde of marauding Goblins … Aidan is a wonderfully gifted young actor who hails from Ireland. I’m sure he will bring enormous heart and humor to the role of Kili.”
As for the rest of the Dwarves played by McTavish, Callen, Hunter, Hadlow and Hambleton, Jackson said: “Graham is a terrific actor, with a great depth of experience, which I know he will bring to the role of Dwalin. I have worked with Mark Hadlow on many projects, he is a fantastic actor…I am also proud to annoucne the casting of New Zealand actors as Peter Hambleton, John Callen and Stephen Hunter. Fran and I know that they will bring great depth and talent to our Company of Dwarves.”

Not impressed with this casting.Alot of these people are just tv actors, either cheap or just available.Armitage has done next to no film work, and none for 5 years, and had alot of criticism for his last 3 roles.Rob Kazinsky; terrible choice.
Right. Because we all know the best actors for any film are the ones with the biggest paychecks. Genius.
Just TV actors?????? Some actors on TV have more talent as other high paid Hollywood hunks!!!
Have you seen one of these guys?
Martin Freeman did a great job as Dr. Watson in BBC’s Sherlock and Richard Armitage has delivered a lot of extraordinary performances in the past!
You’ve only watched American tele, haven’t you? Anyone who’s familiar with what the Beeb produces knows exactly how good tele talent is.
Oh you mean like the Prince of Persia movie?!?!
I mean god forbid they hire people actually FROM PERSIA, which is now Iran just in case you didn’t realize.
Oh wait that can happen either. Probably against the sanctions.
this sounds great! Aidan Turner would’ve made a cool elf king but still – i think he’ll do an excellent job! He’s a great talent.
I do hope David Tennant gets a role – he’s a beyond brilliant actor.
Martin + Richard + Aidan = automatically awesome
Freeman is PERFECT casting. Great for the role, and I can actually buy him as a younger version of Ian Holm’s character.
And in general I’m willing to give PJ the benefit of the doubt when it comes to casting. When he announced people like Wood, Astin, and Liv Tyler people thought he was insane but when the films came out it’s hard to imagine anyone else in those roles.
I can easily imagine Jesse Eisenberg or Anton Yelchin as Frodo and Seth Rogen as Sam. Much better actors than Wood(en) and As(s)tin. Yep, Astin made a complete ass of himself with that book he wrote in which he trashed Jackson for favoring other actors on the set and cutting out his “Oscary” scenes.
I’m sure that thanks to his talent, everybody will be convinced Richard Armitage is an old, wrinkled, long-bearded dwarf despite his being tall, dark and handsome. Just wait! I can’t wait to see the entire stellar cast in action!
Wait, I read Brian Blessed was going to be a dwarf! Is he no longer in? Brian Blessed was made to be in this movie.
All very good news. Is Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis’ involvement in any sort of doubt or is it just a formality of signing some papers?
Have been a huge Richard Armitage fan since seeing his North and South BBC Elizabeth Gaskell performance – loved his Guy of Gisborne. Didn’t know he did Captain America – will have to check that out. He’s been sadly passed over and is an amazing CHARACTER actor for anyone who has listened to his reading of AUDIO BOOKS and I know from reading posts on his fan sites that he is tired of people just looking at him in the ‘looks’ department, of which he is super endowed, and wants to show people what he can do as an ACTOR. He has a remarkably beautiful voice which can morph into just about anything he wants to do with it so…I am completely thrilled to hear this – and I know he was a Tolkien fan as a teen, just like myself and my siblings. I am sure he must be in heaven getting to be in this movie. Hurrah!
Re Armitage. He is so wooden. He only seems to put in effort when he feels like it.He was AWFUL in Robin Hood;his body language screamed “Get me out of this show”;and why didn`t he pick an accent and stick to it? The show was treated with contempt by the BBC; it`s final ep was aired with a channel change and no warning until the last minute. They got away with this because barely anybody was watching the show anymore. He has no chemistry with his so-called love interests, in that, Strike Back or in Spooks. He does far too many voice overs and far too little challenging work to be considered a serious actor.I hate the bank advert he does.He can`t even get the word months right!
If you think Kazinsky’s crap, it’s because you weren’t watching his introduction to Eastenders. It doesn’t hurt that his first scene [the hammer under the pillow?] was some of the best writing the show has ever had.
Freeman is ok, as a person he is a knobhead but the more I think about it, he is the best fit.
Richard Armitage will be great.
James Nesbitt looks to be inked as a dwarf, which is brilliant. Bloody Sunday was breathtaking.
David Tennant is a huge soap overactor. It was fine on Doctor Who, but not for The Hobbit.
Del Toro had Ron Perlman lined up to play Beorn and Doug Jones for the Elf King. Both IMO would be perfect fits.
A lot of these names are not going to be working on anything else until the film ramps up and completes, which will be years, which is why lesser known actors were selected. If anyone knows of a better established famous name I’d like to hear it. There are none.
David Tennant is not a “huge soap overactor”. He was over-the-top on DW because that’s what was required for the character. I’ve seen much of his other work and he is more than capable of what is required for Tolkien.
Dear Mr Fleming,
Have you found about the casting of Sylvester McCoy’s casting in The Hobbit.
There are no Yanks in the cast. How are the makers going to sell this to a Yank audience? The cast have very low or non-existent US profiles.Perhaps American actors were offered parts, but turned them down.it all sounds like a massive gamble.
As a “Yank”, I do not care for American actors in this film, actually, I don’t want political correctness in this film either. BBC is the Best thing on American Cable Television…Great actors all…Cannot wait!
Thanks for your kind comments about our BBC. Sadly the same man who owns Fox News in the USA (Murdoch) and tries to destroy American democracy also owns Sky TV in the UK (which has its own news channel with an almost fascist far-right bias) and uses his channel and money to repeatedly try and get the BBC shut down. He gives loads of money to the right wing parties on condition that they undo the BBC and force them to run adverts like all the other channels. Frankly, Rupert Murdoch is the enemy of decent television.
The key to the movie was casting Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Also, Thank god Peter Jackson used good sense and decided to direct.
I’m a bit worried about Peter Jackson directing. Would much rather have seem what Guillermo del Toro would have done with this. Jackson has a tendency to go way over the top when it’s not really called for.
All these guys must come cheap.. Maybe he lost so much on his ‘Lovely Bones’ flick, that he’s using a bunch of B actors for his hobbit venture/adventure. Who’s next in line… Graham Norton to play the young Gandalf??
Stephen Fry for Beorn all the way!!!
