All remaining freshman series on NBC got some good news today. Three, The Event, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Outsourced, have been picked up for the rest of the season with back-nine orders. A similar pickup for Chase is said to be pending, while I hear Undercovers is close to receiving an order for additional scripts, said to be in 4-6. All renewed series, The Event, LOLA and Outsourced, hail from sister studio UMS. Chase is from Warner Bros. TV, and deals with outside studios sometime take longer (In this case, it hear the holdup has to do with digital rights). Also close to a full-season order at NBC is the WBTV-produced spy dramedy Chuck, a fan favorite that has gone through its fair share of dramatic last-minute renewals. Its deal is being held up by the same rights issues, with both the Chase and Chuck pickups expected to be finalized tomorrow.
Neither of NBC’s new scripted series has broken through, with most struggling in the ratings and one, legal drama Outlaw, already cancelled. But in her statement, NBC’s primetime entertainment president Angela Bromstad indicated that the network brass didn’t focus on the ratings when making the decision. “We are pleased with the quality of The Event, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Outsourced, and feel they are an important part of helping to re-build our schedule and our studio pipeline,” she said. “We believe in these new series and the creative auspices behind them.”
The Event launched as NBC’s most promising new drama with strong premiere week ratings but has been consistently dropping since. (It regularly regains some ground in Live+7 ratings as it is solid DVR performer.) Through Oct. 11, Event has averaged a 3.0/7 in 18-49 and 9.1 million viewers overall. LOLA has had a similar trajectory, with two 20%+ week-to-week declines. Season-to-date, it has averaged a 2.5/7 share in 18-49 and 8.7 million viewers. Outsourced, NBC’s newest Thursday night comedy, has averaged a 3.0/8 share in 18-49 and 6.3 million viewers overall. The pickup for Outsourced creates a dilemma for NBC on Thursdays come midseason when Parks & Recreation is waiting to rejoin the network’s Thursday lineup, raising speculation that NBC may open a second comedy block as it also has The Paul Reiser Show, Perfect Couples and Friends with Benefits waiting in the wings. CBS, which has the highest-rated freshman class this fall, is also expected to make its full-season orders early this week.

How can Undercovers get more scripts? It costs a ton to make and no one is watching.
Chris how do you know the show costs a ton to make?
It gets more scripts, likely, because NBC wants to be in business with J.J. Abrams/Bad Robot, even if this Isn’t the right project. The ordering of scripts in this case seems to be an olive branch to the creative community (which NBC greatly pissed off last season with the Leno debacle) to say: we at NBC will be a little more patient than perhaps the other networks will be. Make your next big show with us.
Maybe so. But on the other networks people actually see your show. I’d rather be on a network that can get me decent ratings and millions of eyeballs then a 4th rate network that gives me a slow death.
why r ppl so shock undercovers is doing well jus b/c u think its a crap show doesnt mean it dont have fans.the proof are in the ratings undercovers is doing well.im jus not sure why it hasnt got a full season pick up yet.(the ratings arent high but their not low either)undercovers rocks
I am certain that NBC stands for ‘Nothing But Crap’ now. The Event is an absolute mess. So poorly written and contrived. Not even mind-numbing entertainment. The series has become the source of jokes around town.
You’re so original. I bow to the creativity it took to come up with Nothing But Crap.
The Event must be the dumbest thing I have ever seen in primetime. What a pile of steaming $#!&
“The Event” isn’t that bad. True, it’s not nearly as creative or fun as lost, but it’s slim pickings this year and it keeps me entertained.
It is worse. Maybe CBS is going to make a show “$#!& NBC puts on the air”
This is seriously one of the worst shows I’ve seen in a while. Though the promo “It’s like LOST and 24 had a baby” made me laugh so hard my dog peed himself.
Thanks. I like this news — LOLA & The Event & hopeful about Chase.
I gave up on Undercovers after three episodes. I expected way better given the show’s pedigree.
Too Bad – Episode 4 was actually great
Gave up after 2. Cliche city. Is it so hard for writers to avoid cliches these days and be a tad original?
On behalf of ABC, CBS and Fox shareholders, NBC, thank you!
I hate disparaging, anonymous online comments. I have never made one. But, I have to make an exception here. NBC execs, you truly are clueless morons.
Well what else are they gonna put on during those times? More ‘Biggest/Apprentice’ reruns?
I’m a drama guy, but Outsourced is the only new series I’m still watching on NBC.
Man, good point. I’d rather watch mediocre scripted than more soul-sucking reality programs anyday.
“Outsourced” getting a full season order?
“The Office” and “30 Rock” got a full season.
“Parks & Recreation” has many episodes ready for mid-season.
What does this mean about “Community”?
I’m not 100% sure of this, but im PRETTY sure that Community was picked up for a full season when they announced the full-season pickups of 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, and The Office. NBC also has 1 or 2 comedies waiting in the wings, so it’s not out of the question that they could launch another night of comedy… maybe Wed at 8 (move, say, 30 Rock and Outsourced there, put Parks and Rec after the Office, and launch one of the other new comedies Thu at 830?), move Undercovers to 9pm (it’s not an 8pm show anyway), and move Law & Order SVU to Thu at 10, replacing The Apprentice).
Wow, the smart money was on “Outsourced” not getting renewed. NBC’s Thurday night line up use to be the gold standard in sit-coms, now they could cancel all of those shows, show old movies and no one would notice or care.
No Chuck? ::frown::
After Chuck returned mid-season last year with gangbuster numbers on that Sunday, I believe NBC picked up a full season 4, so I think Chuck is safe… plus NBC doesn’t have much to replace it with.
Celebrating mediocrity, one pickup at a time!
Indeed. The only reason these shows got picked up is because NBC has nothing else to go back to. Everything they have is complete and utter shit.
Ha! I like this alot
Celebrating mediocrity applies to most of Hollywood lately.
I believe this says way more about what NBC has waiting in the wings (absolutely nothing) than it says about the “quality” of these three shows and “the creative auspices behind them.” Yes, airing more episodes of LOLA, Outsourced, and The Event is probably better than airing a test pattern.
What about LOVE BITES? That was supposed to be good!
heard that was good too. midseason.
Lame. They should have kept OUTLAW if they are going to keep shows around to develope an audience. LOLA Sucks ! The Event is eventless. I say tear it all out and start over again. NBC’s slate stinks.
Angela Bromstad “We are pleased with the quality of Law & Order: Los Angeles” WHAT?! REALLY? Whatever she’s smoking gimme some.
Good question on P&R. Conventional wisdom was that it’d take over for OUTSOURCED – clearly that’s not happening. If the others series have all received 22 eps orders, then what gives? A new comedy night – which would be smart of NBC considering some of the weakness on the other nets, particuarly their dramas.
More “Outsourced” and “Undercovers?” I’ll be watching cable.
As someone who’s been working in the world of scripted tv for a couple of years now, it constantly amazes and frustrates me how simple, yet complex this business is; and how readily all the cooks in the kitchen conspire to spoil a fine dish. It isn’t easy to write a show and get it on the air, much less to sell a pitch. Damn hard endeavors, both of them. So I have all the respect in the world for the folks who not only get their shows on the air, but even to the point of getting an idea ordered to script. As for the Event, damn, it should be terrific. It has all the elements, (literally, as it is a collective stew of pop culture tv) but the dumbing down, taking of short cuts, half worked out contrivances, all threaten to make it ultimately forgettable. Soon, at least for me, the cliffhanger aspect will fail to elicit a desire to ‘find out what happens next’, if they don’t tighten up and get smart. Lost walked that line well. Yes, it had its share of incredibly stupid ‘tv’ moments, but it also kept most coming back with the promise of an intelligent furthering of the concept and, some borderline poetic interchange between characters as well. Josh Ritter is, right now, the best reason to watch The Event, he plays the hero with a unique spin. And, speaking for me and the folks I know who want the show to succeed (we have nothing to do with it), you like this guy, you’re rooting for him in a solid, old fashioned and timeless way. It’s everything around him that’s falling short of quality. That said, I will watch tonight.
Lost had me at the pilot, and it kept me with the time it took developing its characters. I tried the Event its first night out, and it just didn’t hold my attention. It felt reactionary and a rip off of all those other Lost wannabes that have come and failed and gone, and the promo announcing it was if Lost and 24 had a baby further solidified that impression.
THE EVENT….. IS UNWATCHABLE. WHAT?
Outsourced is a disgrace.
looks like another comedy night with p&r and maybe perfect couples but some of the others are looking for summer looks like.
Outsourced is probably the funniest new show on TV. Glad to see it’s being picked up.
Film@11 you wrote that Outsourced is the funniest new show on TV… That is sort of like saying Obama is the best new black president in the history of the United States.
The show, put it simply, pales to the fine movie written by the Seattle-based creative team of George Wing (who also wrote Adam Sandler’s ’50 First Dates’) and John Jeffcoat. That 2006 movie, in a word, ROCKS… the sitcom deserves to sink like one.
If you held a master’s class on comedy writing at the WGA library, I am sure that a solid written comedy like NBC’s “Community” would come off like Billy Wilder compared to ‘Outsourced’ which would be like something out of Pauly Shore’s alleged brain. The show is One. Big. Misfire.
Does anyone know why NBC didn’t keep Wing and Jeffcoat around for the’ Outsourced’ project? They deserved that shot. It seems like the network execs took a very good idea and cratered it! Some magic surely got lost in the translation of the idea from big screen to boob tube.
Who can guess “bobby’s” true identity? Is it George Wing’s mother or John Jeffcoat’s mother?
how pathetic for Angela that she’d feed us that crap??? And think we’d then buy it?? her shows are an embarrasment…as is she….a once talented Executive only white-knuckeling her ability to keep her job and kissing-ass. What happened to you? Maybe it’s time for you to finally ask that question?
That Undercovers still hasn’t been cancelled is proof that NBC deserves to go under. This show is hemorragimg money and these morons are talking about ordering more scripts?
“Outsourced” should be outsourced.
Too Funny!
If NBC really believes in the event it should be moved to Wed or Thurs. Otherwise it will lose ant traction it has because it is in such a difficult time slot. Why is NBC so slow in making changes? The apprentice is flopping
Agree 100% with this. It needs to be out of the MNF death slot in order to have a chance with the type of show it is.
