The original Danno on Hawaii Five-O died in Florida of natural causes on Thursday. He was 72. MacArthur, who was the son of Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, was at the other end of one of TV’s most famous lines: “Book’em Danno” was the order whenever his TV partner Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) caught the bad guy. Scott Caan currently plays Danno in the CBS remake of the original, which ran from 1968-1980. MacArthur was also in several Disney films, including Swiss Family Robinson and Kidnapped.

Book em Danno! RIP
RIP Danno! Thanks for a great run!
MacArthur came from a generation when the kids of celebrities often went on to success without fucking up (are you listening, Charlie Sheen?) like Michael Douglas (Kirk’s son) and William Hopper (the son of Hedda Hopper). I miss that work ethic.
Danno Loved him. He made the show along with Steve. Was a great cast all around. R.I.P.
72 is too young for natural causes – so sad.
I saw him at a memorabilia show last March, and he did not appear to be well. He was very very frail looking.
He is one of my Disney favorites. I still like Swiss Family Robinson.
RIP Mr. MacArthur.
The one and only Danno.
Very talented man.
I am surprisingly upset by this – I’m 23 years old and just watched the pilot episode of the original last night (CBS has a good amount of episodes on their website from Season 1) – it was the first time I had seem any part of the original. Talk about timing. I’m a fan of the remake and can appreciate the legacy MacArthur passed down to a new generation. Rest in peace, Danno.
He was a real gentleman and a very kind man. He will be missed.
The whole, original, Five O gang is together again. Aloha Danno. You were greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
MacArthur also had some memorable feature roles beyond his Disney work. Who can forget his nervous Ensign Ralston opposite Richard Widmark in The Bedford Incident. He was also quite memorable as the green lieutenant who mans up in Battle of the Bulge. RIP
I had such a crush on him when he starred in Light in the Forest. I was just a young teenager then. He was great in all of his roles, movies and TV. Seemed like a classy guy, really a nice person. He was indispensible in the original Hawaii Five-O, a solid presence. I always would watch anything that he was in, he was just an appealing character, no matter what the role. I surely will miss him.
Damn… I grew up with the phrase “Book ‘em, Danno” – I think I watched the entire run of that show. I also remember him from “Swiss Family Robinson” and “Kidnapped”, and I even saw him in the 80′s revival of “The Front Page” on stage. He may have been ‘just’ the supporting actor on “Hawaii Five-0″, but his role (and acting) helped make the show.
I must be getting old… too many of the actors of stage and screen that I grew up watching are dying off; and most of them will be very much missed, true professionals from an earlier age.
When I repped his Helen Hayes at ICM, I had many dealings with James. He was always like his mom: kind, caring, insightful, principled and generous. This is such a shame.
The newly remade series is such a pale sad comparison to the original. Back in the day Hawaii Five-0 ran twelve years! I give this new run at it about 12 minutes.
RIP James aka Danno! He was a fantastic actor.
It might have been better to post a video clip from The Truth About Spring or The Swiss Family Robinson – with a topless Danno.
Now that is a memory.
Shame. I have heard he was a lovely man.
