In its ratings pattern, NBC’s new serialized drama The Event begins to resemble more ABC’s last season sci-fi misfire FlashForward than the network’s long-running mystery drama Lost. In its third airing last night, The Event drew a 2.4/6 among adults 18-49, down 17% from last week and 33% from its series premiere 2 weeks ago. The sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller is among the biggest gainers from time-shifted viewing, so its ratings will go up a bit but still, those are not declines you want to see week after week. Also sliding precipitously is NBC’s new 10 PM drama Chase (1.7/5), down 19% week-to-week and 26% from the premiere. NBC’s 8 PM dramedy Chuck (1.9/5) was down 5%. With all the declines, NBC finished distant fourth on what was expected to be one of the network’s strongest nights this season built around new tentpole The Event.
Despite most of its Monday line-up being down week-to-week, CBS had a big reason to smile this morning: its new 9:30 PM comedy Mike & Molly (3.8/9) was up 3% from last week despite its lead-in, Two and a Half Men (4.5/11) being down 6% (That is an excellent hold of more than 84%.). Overall, all declines for CBS’ series last night were pretty minimal, How I Met Your Mother (3.4/10, -13%), Rules of Engagement (3.0/8, -6%) and Hawaii Five-0 (3.5/9, -3%).
At Fox, the season premiere of Lie to Me (2.2/5) improved dramatically on Lone Star‘s dismal pre-cancellation performance last week. Still, the procedural squandered almost half of its House (3.9/11) lead-in.
ABC’s numbers were probably boosted by an NFL game coverage in Boston. Still, Dancing with the Stars (4.3/11) continues a very strong season. It was down modest 10% from last week. Castle (3.0/8) was up 7% but its fast nationals are often inflated by a Dancing overrun and normally go down a notch in the finals. ABC easily won the night in 18-49 (3.9/10) and total viewers (17.4 million)
At CW, Gossip Girl (2.1 million total viewers, 1.8/5) hit season highs in both categories while 90210 (1.9 million, 1.3/4 in 18-34) was flat week-to-week. But the network’s fast national numbers got a boost from an NFL game coverage in Miami.

I watched Mike and Molly. The laugh-track guy should be given a raise because he worked his ass off on it. Fat jokes, masturbation jokes — and brutal ones. The episode went from cringe-worthy to shouldn’t-I-be-reading-a-book-worthy. Better name for the show? “$#*! Chuck Writes.”
Mike and Molly is about half of a good show (and of course there is no laugh track). The two main characters are good and some of the only sitcom characters around with anything resembling charm. The African waiter was also pretty good last night.
The problem is that the mother and sister are awful characters and every charming moment is undercut by a mean-spirited joke – which works OK on “Two and a Half Men” because it’s an intentionally mean-spirited show where the two leads are pathetically ruining their own lives. This is supposed to be a light romantic comedy yet the writers can never pass up a joke no matter how nasty it is, even though part of good comedy is knowing what jokes NOT to use.
If it were another showrunner I’d think they’d be able to go with what works and humanize the supporting cast, but this is Chuck Lorre so I fear everybody will be nasty by the end of the season. Still, I can see why it’s doing OK, because two or three good characters is two or three more than we’re getting on the other new comedies.
I hate to be a know-it-all, but I predicted that the entire Monday line up over at NBC would go up in flames within a few weeks and it has finally happened it week 3. Concast should have tried to get NBC Universal without NBC.
Chuck – I would be very shocked if NBC decided to air 19 episodes of this low rated show.
The Event – Having sold this one to 200 foreign markets, NBC execs will probably stick with it for now and probably air whatever episodes they have for season 1. Then, its goodbye Event.
Chase – Jerry is not having any luck with any of his new shows, both on cable and network. Maybe he can do CSI: Chicago next and sell it to NBC or ABC.
..should have tried to get NBC Universal without NBC. That was priceless!
I watched the one episode. The cast deserves better. Were there this many fat jokes in the first two episodes? Meanwhile I have three episodes of The Event on my DVR, taunting me. Isn’t The Event NBC’s highest-rated show in total viewers right now, outside of maybe L&O spinoffs?
I only watched the first episode and it seemed to be nothing but corny fat jokes. That’s the last I’ll ever watch of this show.
It obviously appeals to some people, and there needs to be lowest common denominator comedy for those that want something they don’t have to think about.
But still… I can’t really understand why anyone finds this show funny.
You should check out the episodes. So much fun!
I watched the first episode and thought it was one of the worst things I’ve seen in a long time. Their were too many fat jokes and the mother, sister and the African-American best friend were such one-dimensional stereotypes that it was embarrassing.
Dwts and gossip girl clothes/ that’s it for the entire week!!!!!!!
I was really rooting for THE EVENT but it’s losing me. I watched the first ep intently, found my mind wandering during the second, and the third ep played in the background while I diddled with my computer. There are no hooky characters and the production values scream 1977 MOW. If the audience dropoff continues, those still interested may have to vacation overseas to see how it ends.
Same, I started to become intrigued, but the writing and acting is sub-par at best. Cliche lines, cliche government coverup, cliche situations. It had potential, too bad.
I’m with you guys. Intrigued by the pilot, but by the end of the second episode the shoddy writing was getting to me.
Take the president — no personality to speak of, just does whatever the plot requires, including randomly interrogating Laura Innes bad-cop-style (I laughed when he turned the chair around before sitting on it) without asking any of the right questions. And have they explained why no one has noticed that the government operative who’s actually an alien hasn’t aged a day in ten years?
Might catch the third episode on Hulu, might not. It’ll have to be great for me to go further.
“Hawaii Five-0″ is a text book example of the limitations of digital cameras. Why is CBS is using this method of capture for an action drama? I can see why digital is acceptable for a show like “The Good Wife” but when you use whip pans and rapid camera movements, the picture turns into electronic slush.
I can’t get over how horrible the colors look on “Hawaii Five-0″ too. That is, compared with the other recent show shot in Hawaii, “Lost”. The colors on “Hawaii Five-0″, look the same as the colors on “The Good Wife”. In other words, CBS has made a tropical paradise look like an artificially lit interior, of a New York City sound stage.
The pilot looked great, What have they done,And please to many
close ups show the Island Cheap cheap cheap.
I just figured it out The Pilot was shot by Gabriel Beristain
big bucks. Ase they say ” you pay peanuts you get monkeys”
I agree, Molly’s family is going to kill that show.
Just wait to see next week’s numbers for The Event. The preposterous zombies at the end of this week’s episode should ensure it nosedives.
The plot holes grow ever bigger. Seriously, an RV appears from nowhere? The FBI’s security is that lax? And so on, and so on.
I could almost forgive this show if it had been shot with any style, but it must have the worst photography on any network show in at least a decade.
No way is this show making it to season two, unless the back order episodes are considerably better-quality work. Assuming it even gets a back order, and that cannot be a given at this point.
Anyone else pleasantly surprised by how good ‘Hawaii Five-Oh’ is? A few weaknesses, certainly, such as somewhat stiff leading man, select dialogue that could use one last pass, but it’s well-edited, crisp, gorgeously shot, and simultaneously funny and serious. By that I mean events in the show are taken seriously by the characters, but the dialogue between the leads is often funny. Caan’s performances week to week are absolutely wonderful.
The whole enterprise feels like they’re putting that little extra bit of effort in at every stage of the production, and it shows.
Really want to like Mike & Molly, because we are big fans of the two leads, but once the black grandmother showed up, we couldn’t take any more of it and turned it off.
Chuck Lorre knows how to make a very unsophisticated, lazy audience laugh.
Well, the declines in Chase/Event are decent-ish news for Chuck, which NBC knows will get a 1.9-2.3 week to week and has a rabid fanbase. NBC can’t be happy with their pilots this year — Chase did worse than Gossip Girl last night, The Event is sinking fast, Undercovers is a nonstarter, Outlaws is just pitiful even for Friday.
Granted, they have the DEK pilot waiting in the wings, but with a ton of potential holes to fill, wonder what is getting a back 9.
Everyone(this is alot of people) I have spoken to thinks Mike & Molly is soooo LAME…who is watching this show anyway…there is obviously a conspiracy with ratings….I NEED PROOF! One of the cable shows should pick up LONESTAR–I will guarantee it will be a hit! I just have to think America sucks when it comes to watching television….NONE of this makes sense to the mighty intellectuals!
The Event is an amazing show. So much fun to watch. The cast is fantastic and the storylines are getting better each week. The fact that NBC put the show in that time slot is so silly. Did they not learn anything from putting “Trauma” in the same time slot last season? Honestly move it to a better night!
Actually, Heroes was in that slot last season… and did just slightly worse than what the Event is doing 3 eps in.
The problem with THE EVENT is that it has yet to provide us with a concrete situation (or “event” if you will). We are still being fed an elaborate setup. Everyone knows something that they won’t tell us, and they all seem to think it’s real important, but they won’t let us know what’s going on to decide for ourselves. They will continue to see viewership fall off until the audience is given a reason to follow along. Ritter’s girlfriend has been kidnapped — who cares?
LOST did it exceptionally well. We knew in the opening moments that we were on an island and need to get home (situation). The mystery/mythology was just the icing on the cake.
THE EVENT is all icing, no cake. Good for a few bites, but who wants to eat that week after week?
I’ve watched the first three weeks of Mike & Molly and have to say that last night’s episode was not as good as last week’s, although it was about on par with the premiere. Week 2 was funnier because they relied less on fat jokes. At some point, the show is only going to work if they can move beyond the fat jokes because there are only so many to tell.
I’m finished with the Event. It’s one of the most poorly written & executed shows in recent memory. What a waste of talent. 33% decline in 2 weeks? Ouch.
Wow, those are some great numbers for Gossip Girl and CW. Happy to see the rating getting higher for GG.
Gossip Girl is really well written. Yeah, I said it.
The prob with 90210 is the advertisements, everything is “goofy and silly” like sitcom-y. They need to promote some “What The F (WTF) Moments”. That’s what got me to watch Melrose Place and The OC. It was always like someone’s gonna get it, sirens, someone makes shocking face, someone screams somebody call 911. Like you don’t want to miss what’s going down tonight on this trashy primetime soap. The new 90210 should take a page from their brethren. No one cares about quirky stuff like Naomi’s going green. Sex, drugs, murder, every damn week. Not just season finales.
It’s funny. CBS would rather put fat WHITE people on than african americans.
….said jennifer completely discounting the fact that 3 african-americans are now series regulars on the show.
reno wilson as carl
nyambi nyambi as samuel
and
cleo king as carls grandma.
This is incredible — I just found an episode of Bluebloods on Betamax. It was down in my parent’s basement. How could this happen? Betamax was phased out in the mid 80′s.
Is this the funniest comment I have ever read or am I just sitting here choking on my coffee because I fell over and hit my head? Too f*cking funny.
I can’t stop watching The Event. It’s now so bad it is hilarious.
“Mike and Molly” is a despicable concept. It might as well be about laughable, lovable crack addicts. There’s nothing funny about making morbid obesity acceptable on any level. It’s fat-porn.
Obesity is a national epidemic that is not being addressed. This sort of positive portrayal of tubsters is not helping.
You’re right. We should shun anyone with a problem to the shadows, never to be seen again. Like you, for example. I think smug self-righteousness is becoming a national epidemic. Go away and certainly never rise to the level where you might appear on my TV screen.
We should not be promoting, validating and glamorizing a physical condition that is selfish, unhealthy and preventable. There is no justification in this country, in this day and age, for being morbidly obese. The Network is wrong to portray it as being anywhere near “normal.” It is morally reprehensible.
Awaiting your chubby little finger’s response…
I love you Ivy.
MIKE & MOLLY is such shite i can’t believe people are watching this crap. what a joke. how is it that 90% of network television just totally sucks. thank god for the cable networks. why is it they’re the only places who can hire good writers?!
The Event, unlike Lost, is a very hard show to pick up and watch. I tried last night – and there just wasn’t enough of a character toehold for a first time viewer. Lost did a great job of character introduction and development over the first season. The mythology developed slowly. Not so with the Event. This show will continue to slide and is, effectively, gone.
I was also dismayed at the quality of Hawaii Five-O. I have a new flat screen – and they’re all crazy digital. Almost everything has an ultra-HD look. There’s a movie setting on the monitor which dulls this down a bit and really helps watching movies. But shows shot with full frame 35mm HD chips, like the F-35 or the Red, come out looking like cheesy home video. Wish I still had my old plasma display.
And the Five-O writing? Pass.
