UPDATE 2PM: With Nielsen’s final numbers in, as expected, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars (4.0/10) and Castle (2.7/7) were adjusted downward, with Castle tumbling 16% from the fast nationals and finishing second the 10 PM hour behind Hawaii Five-0. Meanwhile, CBS’ How I Met Your Mother (3.5/10) and Two and a Half Men (4.5/11) were adjusted up.
PREVIOUS 9 AM: It’s no longer carried by a broadcast network, but Monday Night Football continues to wreak havoc on the broadcasters’ Monday lineups. Last night’s Minnesota Vikings vs. NY Jets on ESPN as well as the MLB playoffs on TBS (Braves vs. Giants) were probably responsible for some of the ratings declines on the major networks which continue as we enter Week 4 of the season.
NBC’s The Event (2.2/5) was down 8% from last week, finishing third in the 9 PM hour and posting its lowest rating to date. That is in no way a good number for a high-end drama like The Event. But on the positive side, the show has been logging significant DRV numbers (27.8% increase in Live+7 numbers for premiere week), it is still running ahead of last season’s slot occupant Trauma (1.8) and posted the lowest week-to week decline among freshman series last night. Chase at 10 PM did a 1.5/4 in 18-49, down 12% from last week. That’s below the 1.6 rating NBC logged in the hour with the Jay Leno Show a year ago. Meanwhile, Chuck (1.9/5) at 8 PM held steady from last week.
There was a clear divide between the declines for new and returning series on CBS last night: they were small for veterans and larger for rookies. How I Met Your Mother (3.4/9) at 8 PM was down 3%, followed by Rules of Engagement (3.0/8, flat) and Two and a Half Men (4.3/10, down 4% for the comedy’s lowest-rated fall telecast). Mike & Molly (3.5/9) was down 10% for a still-excellent 81% hold, while Hawaii Five-0 (3.1/8) was down 11% and lost the hour to Castle in the fast nationals but is expected to come out on top when final ratings are released. Like The Event, Hawaii Five-0 is a major DVR draw, getting a 28.2% ratings bump in Live+7 ratings for premiere week.
ABC’s fast nationals were inflated by NFL coverage in Minneapolis. Dancing with the Stars (4.1/10) was down 5%, while Castle (3.2/8) currently runs 23% higher than last week but its numbers were double-inflated by football preemption and Dancing overrun.
Both Fox dramas, House (3.6/10) and Lie to Me (1.9/5), were down 10% from last week.

So Castle actually beat H50? CBS can’t be happy about that. That was their golden goose.
i have been trying to watch H50 but i gave up half way through last night..just too much bad joking and mugging from caan….the show would be so much better without him…they need to write less dialog for him…or can caan.
I only watch it for Caan. He’s the best thing about H50. I can’t stand Alex O.
Indeed Trish. If it weren’t for Caan and Kim carrying Alex; the show would be going the way of Three Rivers.
Agreed. Watching Alex O. is like watching paint dry. It’s clear the ladies at CBS are in love with him, but he’s painfully bo-ring! And I say this fully admitting that I watched almost every episode of Moonlight thinking he was going to be a huge star. I was wrong. And so is CBS. Caan is good, though. He deserves to headline his own show.
And I really don’t have anything against Alex O. I just don’t agree with CBS in their thinking that he can carry a hit show on primetime. He’s a great looking guy really, but I just don’t feel he has that certain “something” a leading man needs to have.
“Castle” will drop like a rock when the final numbers come in. The ABC affiliate in Minnesotta carried the game, and a minute of “DWTS” ran over into “Castle” and is currently tabulated in the finals. It’ll be close in total viewers with “H50″ hovering at 10 million (also because of the Favre-Jets thing) but “Castle” will surely fall back to Earth in both demo and total viewers.
A show touting it’s DVR Live +3/+7 numbers is like a subway system touting the number of riders who jump the turnstile.
You clearly understand neither media, nor subways.
What doesn’t JDS understand. At some point advertisers are going to ask what they’re getting for their money and they know DVR views aren’t as good as regular views. Google is having trouble right now because they can’t show results for their advertising. You think companies aren’t going to ask the same thing about DVR views?
Maybe you’re the one that doesn’t understand.
Chase deserves a Friday 11 p.m. slot for a slow, miserable death.
As 21/2Men is a large part of my life and the first three episodes of season eight never found traction, I was very happy to see real talent back for “Hookers, Hookers, Hookers”. Charlie sittin’ around in a shell of a burned out house with his buds and finally happy, with a most welcomed Judd Nelson on his right, made for a great show.
NBC on Mondays – RIP
Just mondays?
Though it wasn’t mentioned above, it is worth noting that NBC’s Indianapolis affiliate WTHR (which I believe is the NBC affiliate for most or all of Indiana) pre-empted CHUCK in its regular time period to allow for political debate coverage and aired the entire show at 3:34am-4:33am Tuesday morning. So if that show is down this week, which I don’t kno, it’s possible that at least a small portion of that decline could be attributed to that rescheduling.
What’s the deal with “The Defenders, on CBS?
I haven’t heard much about their ratings in the last couple weeks.
Are they still hangin’ in there?
Actually, my problem with H5O isn’t the cast, it’s the plots. Somehow they just aren’t very involving and every week I turn off the show about ten minutes in. It’s possible that with so much focus on cast interaction, they don’t set up enough danger to the public or guest cast to make the show exciting. Then again, maybe I’m comparing all the new shows to “NCIS,” which I just got into this year and is always fun to watch!
I think you people wouldn’t know a great actor if you saw one. Because Alex O’loughlin is not boring he is a very good actor and so are the rest of the cast of H5-0. I love how alex can play being sweet and kind and being the mean badguy the next.
Thank you for posting your comment, Alex O’Loughlin’s Mom.
+1
You win the internets today, Bored.
I was so excited for Hawaii 5-O…saw the 1st ep…and, haven’t watched it since. The guy that plays McGarret(who is NO JACK LORD) is so boring and one dimensional. Whoever cast him should be drummed out of the business. What a disappointment this show is. It’s way too slick and soul-less…
Seriously? And Jack Lord a good,
exciting actor??? Puhleeze!
Puh-leeze! Jack Lord was a good and exciting actor. You never bothered to pay attention. His McGarrett was serious because he had to be, but he also showed range, and changed facial expressions, tone of voice, and emotions.
I love “The Event”. the plot holes are cute
The real Issue for CBS at 10pm is “Hawaii 5-0″ is trending down week to week. their numbers last night were lower than what “CSI:Miami” was tracking same time a year ago , and “Castle” ended up beating that show by seasons end.”Castle” numbers are up from last year and the show shows no sign of decline as it enters a third season. Actually they are ticking upwards each week even with a football game and a one minute over run. After the millions of dollars they spent on touting “Hawaii 5-0″ as the next big hit, CBS could not be happy.
Latest numbers for 10/11 show Castle and Hawaii 5-0 neck in neck with #H50 winning the all important 18-49 demo. O’Loughin is a decent actor who is playing the character as written. I’m not sure exactly what people want from him.
The best thing about “Hawaii 5-O” is that it comes on at 10pm and I can use Alex O’Loughlin to talk me to sleep. Nice to look at but oh so boring. I am also not really happy about the “look” of the show..poor lighting I think…along with the really bad writing.
I watched 90210 and regressed. I loved it
Alex O’Loughlin is good-looking, but if you watch carefully his facial expression doesn’t change. I don’t mean this as a snark. I watched about ten minutes of 5-0, and I’ve seen Moonlight, and that’s what I noticed. Then add to it that he doesn’t have that hokey charisma that the Horatio Caine actor has (CSI: Miami); and the character isn’t authoritative, commanding, or imposing. One thing about the Jack Lord version was that McGarrett came off as fearsome. Lord acted the part like a classic movie matinee idol, but you got the feeling you didn’t want him after you. He wore dark suits, and behaved more like a naval commander. O’Loughlin’s McGarrett looks and acts like a man who needs to be under command, not a man who is in command.
