God is proving to be a ratings god this week. After a religion-themed Glee dominated Tuesday with a 4.6/13 demo rating, an episode of Modern Family tackling the same subject ruled the demo roost last night with a 4.5/12. It was mostly an uplifting night with all networks able to brag about something except for NBC whose entire lineup was down.
New NBC drama Undercovers continues to fade at 8 PM. It managed a 1.5/4 in 18-49 last night, down a notch from last week. On the same night last year, the now-defunct medical drama Mercy drew a 1.9 in the hour, and NBC averaged a 1.7 in the time slot last season. At 9 PM, Law & Order: SVU (2.5/7) was down 11%. Even worse, new spinoff Law & Order: Los Angeles (2.4/7) was down a steep 25% from its premiere last week. On the positive side, it still won what is shaping up to be a very weak Wednesday 10 PM hour this season and held 96% onto of its SVU lead-in.
CBS delivered another solid performance with Survivor: Nicaragua (3.6/11, up 3%) and Criminal Minds (3.5/9, down 3%). But the network’s new dramedy The Defenders (2.1/6) at 10 PM was down 16% from last week to log CBS’ lowest-rated original telecast in the hour in 7 years. It finished No.2 in the hour to NBC’s LOLA while winning in total viewers.
This is the CBS scheduling move I have had a problem with. While the others have largely paid off so far, The Defenders, a light legal drama starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell, never quite fit behind the gruesome “serial killer of the week” Criminal Minds the way the darker CSI: NY did. CBS is right to put the focus on growing new hit series but CSI: NY was the youngest in the CSI franchise and, just like James Cameron felt like he “probably left a couple of hundred million (box-office) dollars on the table” when his Avatar was pushed out of 3D theaters by Alice in Wonderland, I feel CBS might have left ratings on the table by moving the show to Fridays a bit prematurely.
ABC’s comedy lineup was also pretty solid. The Middle (2.4/8) was down 4%, new comedy Better with You (2.3/7) showed a promising uptick of 5% despite its slightly weaker lead-in. Modern Family (4.5/12) was virtually flat (down 2%), while Cougar Town (3.1/8) perked up nicely after 2 weeks of mostly disappointing ratings, up 11%. Also up double digits was new 10 PM legal drama The Whole Truth (1.4/4, up 17%). That’s a promising sign for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced series, which looked pretty much DOA in its first 2 airings. Too early to pop the champagne as the series still finished dead last in the hour but reversing a down trend is good news.
Hell’s Kitchen (3.2/7) has been Fox’s unsung hero this fall. The utility player has been quietly chugging along on Wednesdays, keeping the network in contention with 2 second-place finishes. Last night, the two-hour show grew from last week by 7% and led Fox to a No.1 finish for the night in 18-49, tied with CBS. (CBS won outright in total viewers.)
We don’t have numbers for the cable network’s coverage of the first night of the Major League Baseball playoffs but they should be significant and may have impacted the broadcast nets. The Philadelphia Phillies-Cincinnati Reds game featured a no-hit bid by Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay, only the second time in playoff baseball history that a no-no was tossed.

Am thinking the tanking of Undercovers is the biggest story of the new season so far. Could not have been more hyped. Reminds me of the Pushing Daisies disaster a couple years ago.
What Pushing Daisies disaster? The show was considered a solid hit in the first season. (it wasn’t until later that it became an unfortunate casualty of an insanely long hiatus due to the writers’ strike).
Pushing Daisies started decently though, if I remember correctly, didn’t it? Maybe not spectacular, but not nearly Undercovers-low either. The strike was really what seemed to kill it off. Pretty sad ratings after it returned.
Lone Star is by far the biggest tanker of the season: hence the cancellation after only two episodes. It was more hyped than Undercovers.
What?! I saw way more hype for Undercovers than Lone Star. I didn’t see ANYTHING for Lone Star, matter of fact, which was the biggest problem that show had. And the sad thing is that Lone Star is a far better show than Undercovers!
CSI/NY is refreshed this year with the addition of Sela Ward. I would like to see it moved back to Wednesday. However, I think the Criminal Minds spin-off will take over that spot.
Wow, more things to worry about for miserable NBC. Not only LOLA will cocntinue to drop in the coming weeks, the dud that goes by the name of Undercovers is killing SVU as well in the so competitive 9pm slot. And even though it was suggested that LOLA could be moving to Thursdays, it will do worse opposite more similar competition from CBS.
There is nothing NBC can do right about now to fix their schedule. Commissioning duds from JJ and Jerry looked promising on paper, but that is what you get when you order shows before you even see the pilots. Mind you, with NBC brass you can expect them to order the wrong pilots anyway.
I love Law & Order, alway have but I’ve got one word for L&O LA…FREAKIN’ BOOORRRINNG!!
You said it. Law and Order LA is a disaster. Bad writing, no chemistry with the leads. they might as well have left on the original Law and Order.
i’m a loyal fan of everything except this new Law & Order Los Angeles. Damn, it’s just awful.
PUSHING DAISIES was hardly a disaster; it started fairly well, but like other new series, was torpedoed by the writers’ strike.
I’m enjoying DEFENDERS a lot more than I thought I would. But having three legal dramas opposite each other in the same slot is lunacy. I’m thinking DEFENDERS would work better on Monday, after the sitcoms, with HAWAII FIVE-0 providing an action alternative on Wednesday. C’mon, CBS–man up and make the swap!
Cougar Town was great last night. Truly funny show. Modern Family is lame. The scenes with Nathan Lane fell flat. Just not as funny as people say it is, and Cougar Town is way funnier then people are willing to acknowledge…
NBC, it’s time to find your next Cheers or Cosby Show, seriously. Rebuild your brand with broad-based comedy.
The problem with The Defenders can be summed up in three words: “Starring Jim Belushi.”
Bingo!
Why do people still hire Jim Belushi? He’s not funny, nor is he endearing and he’s not that great of an actor. I don’t get it. Why would networks pay huge money to crappy actors instead of just finding new talent out there??
Yep – those three words say it all.
Watched “Criminal Minds” last night, the 1st without “JJ” and the show is sinking with Paget & Kristen getting less and less air time. What a shame for a once interesting show and Daniel J. “Pizza Man” Travanti as a serial killer? With Paget Brewster leaving the show sometime this season it’s time for this once well written show, it hasn’t been well written in quite some time, to ride off into the TV land sunset. Basically it’s time for the “serial killer” to “axe” the show. Also you can forget the spin-off with Forrest Whitacker.
don’t agree. CM is as good as ever. Last year they had the best episode of the serie “100″. Any show that come up with a stunning episode like that is still at the top of its game.
You know, I have no idea what show you’ve been watching but CM never did spend much time on any other characters beside Hotchner and Reid. I may not agree with CBS for firing AJ Cook or letting go of Paget Brewster at the end of this season but yesterday I didn’t miss JJ. If they didn’t have that scene with Garcia taking JJ’s name plate from her office door, I would not have notice she was gone.
You must work on Cougartown or have no sense of humor.
I love the Defenders. One of my favorite new shows. It picks up where Boston Legal left off. Great cast.
Nice comment, “Michael” Belushi.
The only people who could be posting this is the cast of THE DEFENDERS. I agree with No, YOUR name. We got enough of Jim Belushi for eight years on ACCORDING TO JIM. Time to find a new, fat, jolly man with minimal acting talent.
After last night’s weak LOLA the ratings will drop again next week. Terrence Howard looked like he had never tried a case before in court, he is miscast and Skeet looks like he’s sleepwalking. Only Cory Stoll is registering and they don’t give him enough to really flesh out something special. Looks like L&O DOA to me.
L&O:DOA – love it!
It’s not really Law & Order if it’s not in New York. It’s like moving Hawaii 5-0 to Las Vegas.
I soooo agree! LOLA is a real snooze!
The L&O franchise is my favorite drama series; however, LOLA is a big zero with me. It’s so ordinary. I liked the NY version so much better — more gritty, more realistic, better characters and much better actors. I wish we could trade LONY for LOLA.
I thought it was just me having withdrawals from Law & Order. But watching LOLA was sooo boring. Los Angeles is anything but boring. There’s something missing. It’s definitely the writing, directing and actors. Bad decision. they should have kept the original one.
I agree the original is still the best and they should bring it back.
Good thing Criminal Intent is coming back for us L&O junkies because LOLA is a disaster. Nice to have Alfred Molina on American TV, but not on this piece of tripe. Much worse than I imagined it would be.
On a positive note, I agree Sela Ward is a welcome addition to CSI NY – if the writers continue to build a character for her. Only reason I’m watching this show at all this season.
Thanks for being the lone voice in not totally writing off THE WHOLE TRUTH. I love this show. Everyone is so quick to declare it DOA. Yes, numbers are LOW, but considering the lack of advertising, the lead-in and the competition it’s a testament to the quality of the show that numbers have NOT plummeted like the rest and have even ticked up.
I tuned into “The Whole Truth” to see Rob Morrow. I had no idea what the show would be like. Now, I can’t wait for the last 60 seconds and see if they got it right. Rob Morrow or not, I’m hooked. It’s a good show. I hope it sticks around.
Hah… people were already speculating on Chuck being on cancellation watch, and Undercovers (which costs at least twice as much per episode to produce) goes and posts a 1.5 in the key demo. No wonder Jeff left when he did, as he’s like the kid that left a flaming bag of dog poo labeled “2010/2011 season” on NBC’s porch, rang the doorbell, and ran off.
Now there’s only one more Jeff to get rid of at NBC… Ingold.
A big YES to this. How that cokehead has managed to keep his job there after all this time is a major mystery. Must have pics of someone very high up doing something extremely nasty and/or illegal.
TV Watcher, I assure you — Patrick does not work on Cougar Town. If he did work on Cougar Town, I would’ve told him to write, “Everyone on Cougar Town is super cool especially my bosses and we all HAVE senses of humor so shush up TV Watcher” and then I would’ve given him a promotion.
I want to give all of you a big big hug. Viva Nikki!
Your comment is about as unfunny as your show.
Maybe I was a tad harsh on Modern Family. I still watch the show, geesh!
P.S. TVWatcher – Why would someone who worked for a TV show badmouth its lead-in? Take them sour grapes, make some foot wine and drink a glass. Please.
If the writing on Undercovers remains as awful as it has been so far, the show will continue to sink. Poor writing isn’t its only sin, just the most damaging.
I watched the LOLA last week to see what is was about. Not impressed. Thought I was being extremely hard because I loved the original so much. Still not impressed. I won’t be watching again. Its a shame because the last order of Law and Order had hit its stride with the team in place: Linus, Alana, Anthony and Jeremy.
With shows as unique as “House” and “Cougar Town” you have to watch a few episodes to appreciate what they’re doing comedically. I’m a fan of both.
I wanted to like L&O:LA, but hoo-boy is it a stinker. Its ratings not only dropped week-to-week, but they’re dropping at the half hour. I stuck with it through the hour, but I won’t be tuning in again. Very disappointing.
I felt the exact same way after watching the pilot episode! this show is a mess.
Nada, I’m sorry. In the future. I’ll try to make you laugh. I will try so, so hard. I will spend hours in the writers’ room, hours on set, hours in edit bay, hours thinking about funny jokes and interesting stories, all in hopes that someday, somehow, I make that random, hateful person laugh. I will combat your sarcasm with hope, with heart, and with warmth.
I do what I do for you.
Kevin–
I’m hardly hateful. I love to laugh, and I’m sorry you were offended. I really, really am, to borrow a slice of your vernacular. And don’t worry about trying to make me laugh, based on the two episodes of your show I’ve seen, and your two attempts at humor here, there’s no chance of that.
Hey Nada, what show is it that you have on the air? Oh, no way! you’re an unemployed wanna be writer/director/acotr??? I am shocked…so shocked…btw, table 3 needs their check. chop chop
Hi, just an outsider’s perspective, for what I hope is a reality break -
I wouldn’t be ashamed to be an unemployed writer/director/actor in Hollywood. Sounds to me like it’s all about who you know. I’ll bet a lot of talented people can’t even get their foot in the door.
Probably one of the reasons all of these awful shows everyone’s complaining about, are on the air – you have to know someone to get a show on the air as well. what a ridiculous industry!
okay, you all go back to your infighting now.
I tried in the late 90s to break through in the biz as a writer/publicist.
It was Rough, and the capital “R” is intentional. I stuck my nose in everywhere I could. Worked for free on little indie shoots, theater, indie record companies, some photography here and there. After some two years of struggle, I responded to an ad for a PA at KTLA-TV.
There were literally 250+ applicants standing outside the door at 10am for a $9.50/hour job. Lotsa guys and gals just like me, with Comm degrees in their back pockets and many had gone to big universities, not a little state school like I had.
I actually broke out laughing out loud, and threw my hands in the air. I finally realized this was a rat race I couldn’t win. I moved up the road to the Bay and immediately got hired as a tech writer, after which I moved into accounting.
For those who have hung in there, waiting tables, parking cars, dressing up as Goofy, I’ve got nothing but respect for ya. It is damned hard out there.
Why won’t they pull the plug on Undercovers already? It started out in fourth place, and is now a very distant fourth. Plus, the show must cost several times what it costs to produce an hour of Survivor, Hell’s Kitchen, or even The Middle, all of which are kicking Undercovers’ ass.
The show has no premise (Why does the CIA still call on them, instead of all the other active CIA operatives? They answered this for the pilot story , then never again.), no characters (Seriously, can anyone tell me what the defining characteristic of each of those characters is? And don’t say he’s the husband and she’s the wife.), and charmless writing that fails to elevate the show above its bad design.
If this show had been pitched by any writer not connected to JJ or Bruckheimer, it never would have received a script order, let along a series commitment.
[edit} "...let alone a series commitment."
I hate to say this, but beyond the contractural obligations, there’s probably some political correctness at work here; This is an hour-long network show with two African-American leads in it. (Two young, married, affluent African Americans. It’s the polar opposite of “Homeboys in Outer Space”. Even Spike Lee can’t find anything to criticize about them!)
Beyond Dennis Haysbert in The Unit, and Taye Diggs in Day Break memba that?) There has not been such a thing on TV in years. Hell, the Cleveland Show was the only show with a African-American lead last season.
Once Undercovers is canceled, it will probably be years if not a decade before another network drama with persons of color gets a chance. So NBC needs to be able to say, “Look, we gave this show a chance and the viewers just weren’t there” before they pull the plug for good.
