NBC’s Outlaw is a show in a desperate fight for its life, with its production put on a two-week hiatus that will become permanent unless its ratings improve. They didn’t last night as the legal drama starring Jimmy Smits matched its underwhelming 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 from last week and drew 4.2 million viewers, down 11% from last week. What’s worse, they didn’t despite Outlaw‘s lead-in, a two-hour Dateline (1.6/6) spiking 23% from last week and its drama competition in the 10 PM hour, CBS’ Blue Bloods (1.8/6) weakening by 10% in the demo. Hope is fading fast for Outlaw, which could’ve fared differently on another night as its preview behind America’s Got Talent indicated, but appears to have no future Fridays at 10 PM.

And while Outlaw‘s lack of improvement wasn’t all that surprising, there was something else last night that was: the resurgence of newsmagazines. Neither Dateline or ABC’s 20/20 featured any big celebrity interviews (20/20 was dedicated to the movie Catfish). Still, Dateline was up 23% in the demo from last week, and 20/20 (1.8/6) surged 63% from last week, tying Blue Bloods as the No.1 program in 18-49 at 10 PM. And both did it with virtually no lead-in: Dateline was a self-starter at 8 PM while 20/20 followed a No Ordinary Family repeat (0.9/3) as ABC continues to rerun freshman series from 8-10 PM on Fridays for additional sampling.
CBS’ Medium (1.2/5, 6.1 million viewers overall) seems to have leveled off, matching its demo performance from last week and finishing second at 8 PM in both 18-49 and total viewers behind Dateline, which drew 6.5 million viewers in its first hour. Nice bump for CBS’ relocated veteran
drama CSI:NY (1.9/6, 9.9 million), which was up 12% from last week in 18-49 and for the first time ranked as the top-rated program on Fridays in the demo. The show that held that title for the first 2 weeks of the season, the Tom Selleck starrer Blue Bloods (1.8/6, 11.1 million viewers), was down 10% in 18-49 but continued to attract massive audiences for a Friday series, ranking easily as the most watched program of the night. CBS won the night in total viewers (9 million) and 18-49 (1.6/6) for a third straight week. Fox’s House repeat (0.9/4) and new Good Guys (0.8/3) were each up .1 from last week. Both of CW’s sci-fi dramas, Smallville and Supernatural, were up in the network’s target 18-34 demo. Smallville (1.1/5) was up 10%, Supernatural (1.2/5) was up 20%.

NBC should put Outlaw on a new night.
It wouldn’t matter what night of the week Outlaw is on. It’s just not a good show.
The numbers on Bluebloods don’t tell the whole story. True, the series was down 10% in viewership but it also dropped another 31% in originality, this after a calamitous 54% drop for concept and execution of pilot combined. If trends continue we will be forced to conclude the show is not original at all.
Sorry about Outlaws, Professor. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll get staffed on a mid-season show soon.
Good numbers for CSI NY and Blue Bloods once again. Guess Outlaw’s a goner. NBC would have done better to air a repeat.
CBS should be very happy with CSI and Blue Bloods. I know it doesn’t get any harder than Friday nights, but why aren’t more people watching Medium? I really think it’s good this season.
Damn those Blue Blood numbers are still massive for a Friday night death slot. Over 11 million is insane.
NBC should have just kept FNL on Fridays.
The 20/20 numbers were a little shocking, but the “Catfish” producers had been hyping it on Facebook for a couple of weeks- and I think what was shown about it on 20/20 should put the “the movie is a fake” rumors to rest once and for all…
Do people over the age of 49 have their TV sets tuned to CBS constantly?
Jimmy Smits needs to be put out to pasture. I watched “Outlaw” for a few minutes last night, extremely boring. Personally I don’t think Smits is a draw anymore. (Was he ever?)
Jimmy was a star when he had Bochko and Kelly writing for him
Medium is awful ghost whisperer was so much better CBS should have let it die at NBC with the rest of NBC programing
Outlaw needs to move to a different time slot. People love Jimmy Smits. It premiered to a 6.8 rating/12 share in Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It’s the best numbers earned by an NBC series since “The Marriage Ref” debuted to an 8.7/13 on Feb. 28, then the highest rating NBC had seen “Biggest Loser” picked up an 8.8/14 on Dec. 8. Plus it retained 68% of the audience from America’s Got Talent finale. Considering how little they’ve been advertising this show compared to crappy shows like Undercovers, it’s actually not faring that badly. Move it to a different night, NBC.
Come on, Smits can not play a lawyer, not suited for him and his personality.
Replace Smits with James Spader and I am sure the ratings will be better. Spader can play a sleazy lawyer and good at it.
Smits could move to Bluebloods and play the latino Old-Man-And-The-Sea best friend part to Grandpa O’Malley or whatever his fucking name is.
Jimmy Smits is alot like John Legend to me. Their so call popularity is based on the people within the entertainment business not so much everyday people
With all do respect, Jimmy Smitts appeared heavy, bloated and completely lost as to how to develop a character besides the stereotypical actors “comfort zone” he’s been successful at. It’s a shame…unless he’s willing to move on to what could be an exiting chapter of his career..(using his age, talent and experience to move into more mature parts) he doesn’t have a career… The show is terrible…and Tom Selleck is facing the same problem.
Off topic but relevant…
I watched the first episode of Law and Order: UK on BBC-America. The theme song is different, but they still use “the sound”.
I had a little trouble understanding the heavy accents at times, but otherwise it was OK, and was point by point a replica of the original…except for the courtroom wigs of course.
“Martha Jones” from Dr. Who looked great as a barrister/lawyer.
If it was written to be darker than the American shows, as British cops and crime shows tend to be, it could be great!
Vegas never should have been canceled to begin with and maybe, (slight hope) they can bring in back somehow. They did it with Family Guy so why not this show and it brings in viewers too on Friday nights. Outlaw needs to be CXLed now.
I can’t even remember the last NBC drama I cared about. They have to start from scratch.
NBC shows have a look and feel to them that clearly stinks of “NBC.” CBS has the same problem, except, you know, their dramas tend to connect with audiences for the most part.
Outlaw deserves a shot on a different night. It also deserves better writing but that’s a seperate issue.
Jimmy Smits is the problem? As if. Nice try.
They tried to create a character like the beloved KALINDA of THE GOOD WIFE and came up with — LUCINDA?! I guess I’m supposed to be exactly the person wo loves this trailer-trashy foulmouthed gum-chewing chick, but I absolutely despise her. She’s a parody, something that a man who feels threatened by independent and intelligent women would dream up. Hate, hate, hate her. She’s totally insufferable and ruins the show for me. Can’t tell you if OUTLAW is any good, can’t get over my Lucinda-aversion.
It wasn’t that hard to predict Outlaws not being a hit. Even though Hollywood loves Jimmy Smitts, the audience doesn’t care anymore. Further proof how disconnected H’wood is. They keep feeding the people all these actors who were popular 5-10 years ago in films and television and wondering why it doesn’t pay off. Sheesh.
Jimmy Smits is the Robert Urich of the 21st century.
Smallville is beyond-the-pale embarrassing this year. The writers truly hate the Superman character as they have emasculated him 3 weeks in a row. STOP THE MADNESS.
I really like outlaw please don’t take this show off the air maybe
a move but don’t dump this show without a chance. thanks soooooo
much. I love Jimmy Smits; and have been a fan for years. I like the casts members , please give this series a chance. thanks again
