Every time I write about yet another deal made by Stan Lee, the same thing happens. Fanboys groan that he’s selling out, or cashing suckers’ checks, or making egotistical moves. And he does it because he can. He is after all Stan Effin’ Lee whose Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four and Iron Man among other superheroes propelled Marvel Comics to superstardom. As a result, I can’t help but view this latest announcement from Stan today with even more cynicism. It’s actually inducing nausea in me.
He’s partnering with the National Hockey League and forming Guardian Media Entertainment to create the platform to launch:
Stan Lee’s vision for his latest superhero franchise, The Guardian Project, which will encompass the creation of 30 Guardians (one to represent each NHL team) as a new series of superheroes, with a creative concept that organically and authentically incorporates various NHL elements but is not set in the world of hockey. “I’ve always believed that every great plan starts with a great story,” says Mr. Lee. “In the creation of GME and its unique and unprecedented relationship with the NHL, I truly believe we have the perfect combination from which to launch 30 new superheroes and excite young fans around the globe.”
Created and developed by Stan Lee and Tony Chargin, EVP of GME Creative Affairs, and Jake Shapiro, each Guardian has been derived from its corresponding hockey team, complete with special powers representative of each team and city. These 30 Guardians will be unveiled together in a special presentation during the 2011 NHL All-Star Game on January 30 in Raleigh, NC.
“To be in business with Stan Lee and to be able to bring his latest superheroes to our fans is incredibly exciting to all of us at the NHL,” explained Brian Jennings, EVP, Marketing for National Hockey League, L.P. “We are in constant pursuit of new ways to engage our fans and to introduce new fans to hockey, and the business of GME does exactly that.” With an initial plan to reach tween boys, GME hopes to bring a new audience to the NHL, while engaging the existing, established hockey fan base through a compelling tale of good vs. evil.
The most cutting-edge, motion-capture technology is being utilized to bring the project to life by Vicon House of Moves (IRONMAN 2). A special teaser package will be unveiled during the October 8, 2010 panel presentation of The Guardian Project at New York’s Comic Con (4:45-5:45 pm in room 1A08 of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center).
The near-term rollout plan for the Guardian Project will include an online presence, mobile applications, publishing, gaming, in-arena, broadcast, merchandise, promotional and sponsorship activities.

No one cares about anything new Stan Lee creates. He stopped being talented in the 70s. What was the last character or story he was involved in that anyone gave a S*$@ about?
Your nausea comment made me LOL (for real)… but I don’t mind this move so much. He just wants to be creative and see his characters in prominent places. (….I hope.)
Nikki- Fanboys don’t groan because he’s selling out; they groan because everything Stan Lee has done in the past 25 years, similar to this, has been simply awful.
He’s a sweet guy, but his creative well ran dry years ago…
His creative well was named Jack Kirby.
Chargin should change his name to ‘Chagrin,’ cuz this is all a sorroful mess . . . and unnecessary. Maybe it’s the ‘Entourage’ effect?
Stan understands that brands are essential to launch new characters. Much like Paul McCartney hooks up with Starbucks, Stan Lee teams with NHL. I doubt the NHL is expecting Stan to deliver another Spiderman, so what is the problem? It’s a good idea and we can expect more sports teams to adopt cartoon mascots.
I agree, Stan is a really nice guy, very sweet. But give it up, man! Nikki, you refer to the great characters like Spidey, Hulk, etc., but the truth is, Jack Kirby was absolutely fundamental to those characters. There are new(er) characters out there that would be so cool to launch. My fave is CONCRETE. Rumor had it that Bill Murray was attached for a time to portray the former political speech writer-turned giant yet gentle & philosophical freak created by aliens. Sound nutty? It’s awesome.
This might induce Niki Nausea, but it could actually be pretty cool. It would likely blow if it were the NBA or the NFL, and be too prosaic if it were MLB (and it couldn’t be European soccer — the Superheroes would spend all their time taking dives) but with hockey, with it’s cool outdoor winter atmosphere and aesthetic, and the likewise nature of the team identities (and the historic feel of the “Original Six” and the fact that, let’s face it, it’s the only sport where you can throw a good punch, it just might work. Think about Red Wing, Sabre, Bruin, and Flyer…OK, maybe Maple Leaf might take some work, but on some level — maybe even an ironic one, if they have the good sense to see that’s where it works (and superheroes could use a little of that, the self-serious lot; a dash of the wink hasn’t hurt Iron Man).
Can anyone name a Stan Lee project in the last 10 years that has captured fan enthusiasm? What new Stan Lee hero or heroine is a known? Can anyone think of a story he wrote for Marvel, D.C., etc. that was popular?
I applaud he long career and his contributions but much of his recent work has been derivative and uninspiring. There are many veteran creative artists, like the screenwriter of the Spider-Man movies, or John Updike, etc. who continue to create exciting, vibrant works, Stan Lee just doesn’t seem to be one of those guys.
God bless Stan Lee for lending a helping hand. Many NHL teams have not recovered from the 2004 lockout. Not suggesting the drop in fan attendance caused solely by the lockout (some teams in wrong cities and some teams have performed poorly), but the NHL could use some help and the “Guardian Project” could do the trick.
Just once… I’d like to see something, anything, creative and different in the superhero genre.
Superhero stories are all pretty much the same — yeah their powers change etc, but the basic arcs are all the same. You could pretty much interchange any superhero with any other in any superhero movie or show.
Tell me a new story. One that breaks the mold of the genre. Take risks, be creative.
Don’t think much effort will be put into the Phoenix hero.
I think this is great if it will draw more attention to the NHL. Hockey is a great sport, but it ranks below every other major sport as far as interest from the general public. If this will get more people watching on TV and going to games to see just how awesome hockey really is, then Stan is the Man.
nikki, one day, if you’re not sick, you’ll understand that this is exactly what the NHL needs. it’s creative, fun, cool and a huge marketing component to a struggling sport. hockey fans of today and tomorrow will support this idea. it will also work with many other sports/leagues/teams nationally and internationally.
Anyone ever think that he just like hockey, and wants to be a part of it? Sounds like a fun idea to me, a hockey fan.
Um, the NFL is already doing something like this with Nickelodeon..

You should find out how the NFL got the idea! Take a guess.
The NFL stuff looks like crap animation. I’m excited to see how the NHL stuff comes out. The website for the project looks pretty cool.
This could be awesome, but I Highly doubt it! Mainly because the NHL tends to push 4-5 teams above all else to make money. So Instead of 30 equal heroes we’ll get 4-5 Heroes and 25 sidekicks. It’s a nice try but Until I See Otherwise it’s a F-A-I-L!
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim movies/ cartoon?? lol. Go Lee!
I personally look forward to “The Islander”, solves crime and keeps Oyster Bay safe with his magical hula skirt and surfboard.
He should make a super hero that is a kid. That will surprise so many people in the world and only i thought of it. I mean really adult superheros are old now and days think of something new!
