EXCLUSIVE: Scott Rudin Productions has acquired screen rights to David Levithan and Rachel Cohn’s new novel Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, and has attached Tiny Furniture writer/director/star Lena Dunham to write the script and direct. Rudin, who’ll produce, hasn’t yet set it yet at a studio.
Levithan and Cohn previously wrote the novel Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, which was turned into the Peter Sollett-directed film. Knopf publishes Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares today. Two teens, left alone in Manhattan for Christmas, develop a connection when she leaves a notebook full of literary clues at the Strand bookstore and he follows the clues and leaves some of his own. There are dares in the book that lead the characters to crowded places like Macys and FAO Schwartz. Along the way, they reveal information about themselves, leading to an inevitable meeting.
Dunham, who most recently starred in, wrote, directed and produced Tiny Furniture (it gets released November 12 by IFC), is one to watch. The 24-year old daughter of painter Carroll Dunham and photographer Laure Simmons, she is now casting an HBO pilot which she’ll direct and star in, and which she’s exec producing with Judd Apatow. Her film Tiny Furniture is nominated for two Gotham Independent Film Awards. Dunham is repped by UTA, the book was brokered by WME.

Wow.
24?
She must be a once-in-a-lifetime talent. I never knew that many 24 year olds that had the talent, skills and chutzpah to be given the keys to the kingdom. She’s one lucky (and apparently very gifted) comet in the hollywood universe.
Good luck to you, Ms. Lena Dunham.
I concur.
Having watched “Tiny Furniture” and her various You Tube segments, chalk me up as someone who “don’t believe the hype”. Pretentious one-note, bullshit with an unrelatable sense of entitlement.
FIN.
Just watching the trailer for Tiny Furniture turned me off of this chick’s work. The You Tube segments sealed the deal.
The age she’s doing this at would impress me much more if she came from nothing and didn’t suck.
I’ll be honest, I’ve read her stuff and think its all very woe is me, I’m so rich and entitled and life is so hard. If it’s gonna be a 24 year old girl, can’t we get a different voice than what we’ve heard over and over?
@levita
Why dont you do it since you’re so put out by someone else’s creative choice?
I’ve read her work and it’s remarkable for her, or any other age.
Dan = UTA assistant.
so maybe Dan has taste and should not be an assistant anymore?
Love all these young female writers/directors breaking out!
I applaud anyone who at 24 can make a name for themselves amongst Rudin, Apatow and HBO. That said, don’t get the hype on this one. TINY FURNITURE is in the Daryl Wein/Zoe Lister-Jones category of rich, upper-East End eccentric humor. So if that works for you, then enjoy! But not sure the rest of the world will.
Love David Levithan’s books–he writes smart YA lit. Nice to see his work get on screen. Reminds me of M.E. Kerr’s awesome YA stuff.
if dunham was a 24 year old male skater dude writing about a sensitive young man trying to find himself in a world of slackers i bet a lot of you haters would be impressed. there is a double standard representative in a lot of the above comments. i saw the movie tonite. consider that this is an ultra low budget movie where nothing happens and it is almost completely performed by non actors. it may be uneven but it is enormously original. and entertaining. give dunham a break.
Is it me, or is mostly everyone here commenting on Dunham’s WRITING?? I can say anything about her since I don’t really know her work, but I do know about David Levithan’s. He’s an amazing writer and this book is absolutely original, so even though she’ll be writing the SCRIPT the main theme of the story will not get lost. Hopefully. If they keep the smart conversations that are in the notebook and good actors, I don’t see why this movie wouldn’t be good.
