EXCLUSIVE: Fox News Channel’s signature news anchor Shepard Smith has signed a new multi-year deal to continue as the channel’s lead news anchor as well as anchor of FOX Report and Studio B. Smith’s most recent pact with Fox News inked in 2007 was for 3 years and nets him $7 million-8 million a year. Fox News is expected to announce Smith’s re-signing this afternoon. Smith, who is a guest on The View today to talk about midterm election coverage will also probably address his new contract on the ABC talk show where his Fox News colleague Bill O’Reilly recently made headlines with his visit.
Smith is one of Fox News’ original stars, having joined the channel at its inception in 1996 as a Los Angeles-based correspondent. For the past 11 years, he has anchored FNC’s signature 7 PM newscast The FOX Report with Shepard Smith since, which has dominated its time slot for more than 100 consecutive months, averaging 1.8 million viewers. He has covered such news events as Hurricane Katrina; the Middle East conflict, 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Columbine school massacre and President Clinton’s impeachment.

FOX News Channel (FNC) has re-signed Shepard Smith to a new multi-year deal where he will continue as the network’s lead news anchor, announced Roger Ailes, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, FOX News. In making the announcement, Ailes said, “Shep is a rare journalist whose signature style leads the news industry while embodying the traits of great newsmen of past generations. His talent, passion and dedication to journalism is unmatched and we’re proud that he’ll continue in this role for many years to come.” Smith added, “I look forward to my future at FOX News where Roger’s commitment to journalism has allotted me the freedom and resources necessary to execute the only one-hour newscast in cable news.”
Joining FNC at its inception in 1996, Smith anchors The FOX Report with Shepard Smith, which has served as the network’s signature evening newscast at 7pm since its debut in 1999. Under Smith’s direction, the program has been number one in its timeslot for more than 100 consecutive months, averaging 1.8 million viewers a night, and routinely beats CNN and MSNBC combined, according to Nielsen Media Research. In addition to his weeknight newscast, Smith anchors the afternoon news program, Studio B, which also ranks number one in its timeslot. During his tenure at FNC, Smith has reported from both the Democratic National Convention and Republican National Convention for the 2008 presidential race. Fox is showing that “conservative” does not mean “bigoted”. How many networks would have a (semi) openly gay man as their featured Anchor? Fox even tolerates his occasional arrest, smugness, and consistent prissiness, even though they know it irritates the bejeepers out of us.

I honestly think Shep has a problem in decoding words. He’s pretty young, and would seem to be the product of a modern education in which Whole Language and “sight words” were emphasized over phonics. Yes, he makes mistakes *CONSTANTLY*. But take notice of the nature of his errors: they are often off by a consonant or other letter pattern. For example, he has referred to astronauts checking the shuttle’s “tires” instead of its “tiles”. This is not unusual for adults today, educated in Whole Language schools. It’s also extremely fixable: Shep or Fox should take a few dollars from the millions and get some serious remedial phonics training. I’m serious!

At the time the Constitution was ratified, neither women nor blacks had the right to vote. Please point out where in the Constitution these facts are somehow in dispute. Save for the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, slavery wasn’t explicity banned either in the Constitution or in new states. The 3/5 compromise infamously counted slaves as 3/5 of a person for Congressional Representation. (oh, was slavery what you meant about how blacks played a “major role” in forming the country)
Either way, the Founding Fathers did make it possible to amend the Constitution, so their glaring oversights when it came to voting were rectified over a century later.

Smith is probably the most obviously left leaning figure on Fox News Network. He really did a number on us during the aftermath of Katrina crying outside of the dome but not addressing as far as i saw the fact that the hotels had to bring in heavily armed buses to get guests out of hotels because of the situation on the ground. He reminds me of The Dan’s reporting when a plane came down in a Kenner LA neighborhood and again the Dan reporting after the earthquaqe in California. With so many qualified journalists out there who would NOT drive away viewers, how could foxnews keep Shep on? He would fit in perfectly at CNN. And bringing IN viewers is what matters not driving them away, this is odd… very odd…
Remember a few years back when good old Shep was arrested in DC, I think it was because he became enraged when someone tried to prevent him from parking his car in a slot they were holding for their car. He hurled a ton of four letter profanity at the other party and I am pretty sure was arrested. That story went away very quickly. I like Fox but that was one story that was not a “News Alert” or handled in a “Fair and Balanced” way.
I believe that was back during the Bush-Gore election in Florida in 2000. Remember those pesky “hanging chads”? I don’t think Sheo worked for Fox back then, but I could be wrong. Anyone?
While I do think Shep leans a little left, I appreciate the fact that FOX would sign him regardless. In doing so, they are proving that they are indeed FAIR AND BALANCED. Not to mention that Shep is an excellent news anchor who is not afraid to show a little personality. Good for him.

Shep’s show at the 7:00PM EST time slot is the worst show on FoxNews. Im not sure, but I think his show is suppose to be non-opinion straight news, but with Shep at the helm, that non-opinionated flavor gets lost and he makes it pretty obvious that he (Shep) is a typical non-thinking, clueless liberal.
I save that time slot to walk my dog for an hour, then I come in and watch the O’Reilly Factor…who is clearly not a conservative, and not a Liberal either….what O’reilly has is a great interviewing style, he reveals what he doesnt know, when he doesnt know it, and what he does know, when he does…so that leaves the viewer the decision as to whether or not to agree with him…I run about 60%, but I still find him effective at getting my voice out there, even when he is wrong, I believe people can tell he is wrong, sometimes it because the news at 6PM provided details that clearly he didnt see during show prep.
Yes, its the worst show on foxnews. Even worse than Red Eye, apparently a show about getting stoned and saying stupid things as opposed to being in some bar and talking about stupid financial things?? (reference to another network)
Back during Hurricane Katrina, Shep was whining so bad I b-slapped the television set.
Shep and Al Gore seem to be of the same thought process, that republicans are ruining the planet, lying about war, global warming, etc. Its really an insult that Shep is portrayed to be reporting the news fairly, if his bias was disclosed? then it wouldnt be such an insult.
Grow up you little liberal whiners! Shep was one of the most professional speakers for Fox when it started and kept it together to have it become the nations leadind news and FACTS on politics. They have had to adjust slightly to the left you morons to please the liberal cry babies that said that TRUE FACTS were`nt fair. I said from the start Shep should be a boss at Fox News and I am glad they listened to me. He saved Fox when they techinical problems at the beginning. Keep going Shep!

He is the least of all that FOX has. I was hoping that he would disappear. Over the years, they have let some real talent go and there is never an explanation of why or what happens to them. Just never see them again. Too bad that Smith isn’t one of them.
I agree, i don’t like Shep eitheir. I think he is a liberal and bias. I watch Fox, but not his show. I love Sean and Beck and Bret.
I love FOX and especially Sheppard Smith, why comment on his politics? He brings a natural curiosity to the news and it’s easy to tell which stories he is really interested in. Shep is a breath of fresh air in journalism, despite his irrational exuberance for Old Miss and the SEC.
Good on him for getting an extension.

I’m glad to hear Shep has a new deal.He is very informative and knowledgeable on most subject matter. Good job Fox on being fair and balanced.
Shep works hard to present the news in a fair and balanced manner. He is honest and also lets folks know where he believes the truth lies. Sure he holds some “liberal opinions.” But he also holds some conservative opinions like the truth is more important than opinion.
There is a reason more folks watch him rather than the propaganda sites on other channels.
