EXCLUSIVE: He co-created 24, in which Jack Bauer often saved the lives of fictitious U.S. presidents. For his next project, Bob Cochran is taking on a man who saved a sitting American president in real life: Allan Pinkerton. Cochran is developing Pinkerton, a 8-10-hour limited series for Starz about the famous spy and detective, with Gerard Butler on board to executive produce. Starz has commissioned a pilot script and a bible for the project, a fictionalized retelling of the exploits of Pinkerton, creator of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, the first detective agency in the U.S. “He was an amazing guy — he took part in all the great sweeping events of the 19th century,” Cochran said. Scottish-born Pinkerton, who emigrated to the U.S. at age 23, stumbled upon sleuthing in 1840s Chicago almost by accident. He served as head of the Union Intelligence Service, the forerunner of the U.S. Secret Service. As such, he guarded Abraham Lincoln on his way to his inauguration and foiled an
assassination attempt on him in Baltimore. The little-known episode will be featured prominently in the series, Cochran said. Pinkerton also became “the spy master of the North” during the Civil War. His detective agency was hired by the railroad companies to go after outlaw gangs that were robbing trains, including the one led by the infamous Jesse James. Pinkerton caught many robbers but, in what is considered his biggest miss, he wasn’t able to track down James. While working for the railroad companies, Pinkerton was also involved with the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used mostly in the 1850s to smuggle slaves to freedom in Canada. “On one hand he was enforcing the law, and on the other hand he was breaking the law,” Cochran said. “He was interested in right and wrong, not so much in the the law.” At his agency, Pinkerton developed several investigative techniques that are widely used today, including “shadowing” aka survailance, “assuming a role” aka going undercover, as well as using mugshots and profiling. At the time of his death in 1884, he was working on a centralized database of all criminal identification records which is now maintained by the FBI. Cochran is executive producing Pinkerton with Angela Mancuso, who, as an executive at USA Network oversaw the network’s mini-series Atilla the Hun, written by APA-repped Cochran. It starred CAA-repped Butler in one of his first lead roles. It was Mancuso who suggested to Cochran that they take the project to Starz and reach out to Butler who, like Pinkerton, is Scottish. The actor quickly came onboard as exec producer. Butler and his manager Alan Siegel will exec produce through their Evil Twins production company. Also executive producing And while Pinkerton is developed as a limited series, Cochran is leaving the door open for a potential second series.

Starz is developing some very cool material. They’re doing a great job competing with the likes of Showtime & HBO. Cochran/Mancuso have great taste so looking forward to seeing this. Hope the money lasts at Starz to see it through.
The Pinkerton Agency also supplied the gunmen that protected factories during strikes. They brutalized and killed the workers with impunity.
Hey Justin and Labor History,
Unions have been destroying countries around the world for the last 100 years with their unrealistic benefit demands and worthless work abilities! Anyone seen Greece or France lately? And guess what? It’s coming to the U.S. in the near future. Get informed!
Carol Lombardini, is that you?
Cool, love Gerard Butler!
Why can’t Gerard Butler star as Pinkerton? He can for once use his lovely Scottish accent.
Strange, I read a feature script a couple months back that was identical to this story and pitch – think it was even shopped as a series focusing on the Lincoln attempt – ideas sure do get recycled in this town
Oh great – a show glamorizing privatized law enforcement. Pinkerton was the forefather to guys like Eric Prince; they were businessmen first. If they couldn’t turn a profit, then they weren’t involved.
I love what Starz is up to these days!! Between Butler’s new show and Neal McDonough’s new show – they are coming up with some cool material.
a) I missed the Neal McDonough project, hope it has nothing to do with making believe he’s having sex with someone other than his wife.
b) I’d certainly like to see this story made but not in a manner glorifying mercenaries, and Pinkerton’s actions during the beginnings of the labor movement are horrendous.
c) Exactly how many people take credit for “co-creating” 24?
In some ways, this is like doing a series about the KKK. Some people might take offense especially since they will be glorifying them as opposed to doing a historical piece that would include warts and all.
Love the idea, but as people have stated their was as much bad done by the Pinkertons as good esp. after Pinkerton’s death. Edison used them to spy on, harass and steal from inventors seeking patents he was after. It’s even rumored they killed Louis LaPrince for the movie camera and projector he invented, before Edison.
I second labor history’s comment. In the late 1800s/early 1900s, the Pinkerton Detective agency were absolutely brutal to workers that “dared” to unionize.
Bob & Angela are both wonderful people & writer/producers. STARZ/C. Albrecht are certainly building a reputation for quality material. This is excellent news. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Gerard Butler decided to be an executive producer, but did he turned down the role as Pinkerton, the Scottish? Good for you, Gerry is becoming more diversified in all areas of producing/creating movies beside acting.
A studio buying a project that glorifies the union-busting Pinkertons, in a contract year? I’m shocked
Gerry is becoming quite a business man. There are other ways to make money than acting. He is showing that he is not just a pretty face.
We have all been privy to Butler’s production chops in “Law Abiding Citizen”. We know he is a
very capable producer. I also agree that it would
be a great project for him to star in, if his schedule allows for his producing, maybe it will
also allow for him acting in the project.
I, like so many others, hope he takes this
project for producing and acting.
Even better, make it into a Steampunk piece! Then you’d have “The Wild Wild West” though, wouldn’t you? (almost, anyway). If Gerard Butler doesn’t star, forget about it. Though interesting history, without a compelling lead this is not going to work. But boy, will it ever look good and if it concentrates on the exciting derring-do and avoids the mercenary episodes in Pinkerton’s career it could be very watchable. Make it very exciting!
Please, please, please Gerry, star in the Pinkerton series. I, and all your fans want to SEE you ON the screen, not just behind the scene.
