UPDATE: Things must be getting close on The Hobbit, because casting buzz is getting strong in Hollywood. Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.
EARLIER: While it looks like production on The Hobbit is set to start in February on the pair of films directed by Peter
Jackson, there are still a few giant issues standing in the way. The films had to go in early 2011 to make the holiday release date. But even though the production schedule looks locked, there’s still the issue of the loud labor fight happening between Jackson and the unions, which have told performers outright not to work on the film because it’s a non-union production. By agreeing to a detente, the films would indeed get underway in New Zealand in early 2011. The delay has also been caused by all the ongoing problems at MGM, and just this week Lionsgate put forth a merger recommendation which Carl Icahn backs. That would obviously affect the pending Spyglass deal – and add more drama to any major production going forward. (Meanwhile, while MGM goes through all of its tumult, Mary Parent is expectedly in the process of leaving the studio, which she has run for almost three years.) And the financial questions surrounding The Hobbit still remain: How much of the $500 million bill is Warner Bros footing? And who will eventually pony up for MGM’s part. MGM owns international distribution rights. Another delay in all of this has been the negotiation with Jackson. He co-wrote the script and was always a producer, but he only came on board recently to replace Guillermo del Toro as director. December 2012 is the release date for the first first film and the second comes one year later. Both are in 3D.

There have been so many false dawns that until I see a picture of Ian McKellen dressed as Gandalf on set, I’m not going to believe these films are ever going to happen. Its becoming farcical.
At Last!
MEAA shall not pass!
MGM should sell the Hobbit property to a different studio for a good sum of money. MGM is in the whole, and has been for a great deal of time. I bet they could get at least 80 million from Sony or Warner’s, which would give MGM stock holders a smile. Lets face it, MGM couldnt afford to make this movie.
$80 million? That’s all you think the property is worth?
You do realize MGM is in the red four billion dollars right?
Let’s hope the racist puts some none-white people in the movie. Since, there are billions of them.
I’m aware that middle earth is supposed to be a European backdrop, but he contradicts himself since the evil in the movie was trying to take over the entire world. Hence, where are the asians, blacks, indians and etc. No where to be seen. Peter Jackson is a racist.
Oh, and having a token black guy in King Kong does not convince otherwise. I feel sorry for all the little asian children and etc who love the lord of the rings but don’t see anyone in those movies that look like them. Burn in hell Peter Jackson.
Wow, you’re ignorant.
You really think this is “realistic fiction”?
Just because it’s called “Middle Earth” doesn’t mean it’s Earth.
There’s no such thing as Asians, Blacks, Indians, Whites or “etc.” in Middle Earth.
Actually, you’re both wrong.
Yes, Middle-Earth is our Earth — but set in a mythical past long before recorded history. However, Tolkien’s stories focus only on the north-west corner of the vast landmass that eventually became the Europe/Africa/Asia continents. You can see this by simply looking at Tolkien’s map of Middle-Earth, contained in his books. The area Tolkien writes about in LOTR and The Hobbit roughly equals what we now know as western Europe — with the Shire corresponding to England and Gondor corresponding to Italy.
Given that these stories are a modern attempt at creating a new mythology for northern Europe — one that takes place in a pre-industrial, quasi-medieval setting where people generally don’t travel far from their homeland, is it really shocking that there aren’t any African or Asian characters? Are you just as outraged that there are no Africans in Seven Samurai? Or that there are no Asians in Excalibur? Are Boorman and Kurosawa racists too?
But Frank, contrary to your ignorant statement, many minority actors (of all colors, shapes and sizes) were in fact employed in the LOTR films and no doubt will also be in these new ones too.
If you don’t like Jackson’s films, fine. There are plenty of things to be critical about. But calling him a racist, and wishing him to “burn in hell” based on his adaption of a story you obviously know very little about is beyond foolish.
I think Frank is, what the kids call, ‘trolling’.
Amen and amen.
To the Orcs, Elves and Ents of the world, Peter is a hero for finally opening that door. There were even some dumb-ass hobbits in the LOTR, so you should be happy, too! (“none-white”!!!)
You’re an idiot.
Thats not true, there were plenty of non-european’s in the cast and crew. A lot of the Orcs were actually Maori and Pacific Island peoples. So, get real!
Right, there were non-causcasian people in the movie– they just all happened to be bad guys. Coincidence.
Gee Frank, you seem awfully fixated on skin color and skin-color quotas.
That’s racist.
Saying that someone is racist because they don’t happen to be hiring other minorities . .. is liking saying that I hate Peter because I did not watch his film. There are plenty of films with whites that you did not see. Does this mean that every time your did not watch a film with whites you were being prejudiced? An absence of A is not automatically the presence of B. Your logic is way off.Its like saying that everyone who did not go to the moon hates NASA .. . because they did not go to the moon.
No way this will ever be as good as the cartoon from the 70s. It still holds up to this day.
After reading this article, I’m looking forward to the movie THE CONVICTION even more; something original for a change. So many remakes and sequels and prequels. They can’t even wait ten years before they remake a remake (see SUPERMAN). And now the fourth installment of this? Six installments of X-MEN? Another Bourne movie? Yet another SPIDERMAN after the third one proved there was no gas left in the tank? (It was the last movie I cried at…) I understand it’s about profit, but whatever happened to finding the next ERIN BROCKOVICH? Or even THAT THING YOU DO? Everyone is so afraid to lose money. It must be a bittersweet thing to make a movie; equal parts fear and excitement. Everyone should be required to wear t-shirts on set that read: STICK TO THE FORMULA FOR FEAR OF NOT STICKING TO THE FORMULA.
It’s a book series, good lord, you’re an idiot. Why wouldn’t they make these books into a movie? It’s something many many people want to see. It’s way different than remaking Spider Man or Superman. It’s not like they are remaking LOTR less than 10 years after it came out. I get your desire for originality but come on…
It’s not a re-make of LOTR you goof. It’s more of a story that hundreds of millions of people adore. Consider yourself educated.
Originality doesn’t exist in Hollywood, man. Anything and everything is based on something else.
Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Jaws, Die Hard, Planet of the Apes, the Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, Silence of the Lambs? All books.
Harvey, Chicago, Grease, 12 Angry Men, ? All stage plays.
Road to Perdition, Ghost World, American Splendor? Graphic novels.
Ray, Walk the Line, Gandhi, the Elephant Man, a Beautiful Mind? All real lives.
“Erin Brochovich” and “the Conviction”, of which you mentioned? Are both based on the true events of people’s lives.
And this doesn’t even begin to get into the whole meta sense of there only being so many basic stories…
Seriously, now… If all we got from Hollywood was originality, there would hardly be any movies at all.
Frank G. You are a blithering idiot.
The way for any actor to bypass the unions without fear of retribution is to simply go financial core. Financial core is even mentioned in contracts SAG has made because CA is a right to work state. Any number of working actors today have gone fi core at some point in their careers including Michelle Pfiffer and Jon Voigt. The only penalty is you can’t vote in the SAG election or go to its annual picnic luncheon (which sounds dreadful and should be included as a level of hell in any Inferno remake). And your dues get put on hold.
F.C., apparently indicate FI-CORE, however, s/he should have added an I for idiot BECAUSE, this misinformation in re Financial Core is a perfect example of WHY S.A.G. members should call their union, FIRST, before doing something SO STUPID.
FYI, F.C., California is NOT a right to work state.
But don’t take my workd for it either. Simply CALL S.A.G.
What F.C. claims is…
NOT SO!
By all means. Call the union and have them explain your federal rights to you. They will always have your best interests at heart and will never lie to you. Really. Seriously.
/sarcasm
The other penalty appears to be a loss of one letter from your name.
This took me a minute…
“…Michelle Pfiffer and Jon Voigt.”
Hilarious comment.
Thank you. This is a very tough room.
even though i should be happy the thing has gotten the green light i will not believe the hobbit is actully finaly shooting till it gets to the point of a trailer showing bilbo and co and also glimpses of Smaug. but cool that peter can hope fuly now get started to finaly bring the thing to life.
MICHAEL FASSBENDER! MICHAEL FASSBENDER! MICHAEL FASSBENDER! This is the only good casting rumour I`ve heard so far. better turn true. he`d make an amazing Bard.
ummm… isn’t peter jackson supposed to be working simultaneously on two tin tin movies with steven spielberg at the same time as this shoot? what is the focus and quality going to be like when that happens?
he was supposed to direct Tintin when he was just the producer of the Hobbit. But now that he is also directing (who couldn`t see it coming?), Tintin 2 is not happening until The Hobbit is done or Spielberg will direct #2 too.
Ted thank you so much for your intelligent response. It truly is refreshing to hear a sensible response to Frank’s comments. And Frank I am of a non-white ethnicity and have faced true racism but what I can’t stand most of all is when people are so fast to play the racist card when there is no reason for it; that, is plain ignorance.
I’m Asian and I don’t mope about how there’s no Asians in The Lion King. Or no Asians in Werner Herzog’s ‘Grizzly Man’.
But I am happy to report that Star Wars had some Asian characters: the stupid Trade Aliens from Episode 1, and the fearless X-Wing fighter in Return of the Jedi. I shall not forget his memorable line of “Ahhh” as he crashed right into a Star Destroyer, ending in a fiery death.
Hooray for Martin Freeman! I think he will make a perfect Bilbo Baggins and was one of the first people that came to my mind. Glad the scheduling problems seemed to have worked out. Also like the way the rest of the cast is shaping up.
I now consider myself educated on LOTR. Still, I stand by my statement of originality lacking. I understand that the only films that aren’t based “on something,” ie, tied to a true story, play or book are the ones where Cusak runs around inside of Malkovich. I also stand by this statement: if you don’t write a script based on the current rules of structure, you’ll never get it past the readers. It’ll simply be deemed that you don’t know your craft. Heaven help the writer whose “Break Into Two” doesn’t happen on page 25, or the writer who doesn’t kill off the mentor on page 75. Sundance used to be a place for “Gas, Food, Lodging;” now it’s just a place for A-listers to show their artsy, indie projects. Apologies for taking a topic completely off-topic. The End.
Finally! I hope Martin does get to be Bilbo Baggins. He’s a great actor!
I like the idea of Martin Freeman as Bilbo. I hope that David Tennant gets that role that was mentioned.
The Hobbit is fast becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of fantasy movies.
dominic monaghan better be playing merry
