EXCLUSIVE: While Tom Hardy’s plan to play Mad Max in the George Miller-directed Mad Max: Fury Road has hit another delay, the fast-rising Hardy’s in the mix for another big film at Warner Bros. I’m told that Hardy has been set by his Inception director Chris Nolan for a lead role in the next Batman film at Warner Bros. Insiders are keeping the role secret and won’t even say if he’s up for a villain role, but that seems a reasonable assumption. Hardy has followed up Inception with lead roles in the Tomas Alfredson-directed adaptation of the John Le Carre novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and he’s currently starring with Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon in the McG-directed Fox comedy This Means War. CAA reps Hardy, who’s expected to return to Fury Road when it goes.

This is great news.
Black Mask in full “Bronson” mode would be amazing.
I think he is going to portray Hush: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hush_(comics)
that charater seemd like a reality based villain that Nolan, has prefered in the past. Also that character has a history with both Bruce Wayne and Edward Nigma. Either way, Tom Hardy is a great choice for this and future Nolan films.
Hush, plot wise, has too much tied in with the Robins, don’t you think? To stay true to the comic would be nearly impossible with no Robin, let alone a lineage of Robins, I think. That said, I don’t think Nolan is incapable of rebuilding Hush, Hush is an amazing and underused character that Hardy would absolutely embody.
And to use this post as a platform, my ideal villain for the next Batman would be Harley Quinn. There’s the Joker tie-in, and I think it would amazing to see a female lead villain.
And for what it’s worth, and I know it would never happen, I’d love to see Jim Carey reprise the Riddler role, less all the camp they forced into Forever, and just dive in head first into the finer parts of the Nigma psyche. He would carry that no problem.
Who cares what he plays – bring on the Hardy!
Exactly!! Yes, Heath done the business with the joker but that doesn’t mean no one else can play him!
What made Nolan’s joker was the script and the direction! Someone as capable as hardy can pull it off and I for one would love to see Joker on screen again!
He is the yang to Batman’s ying, not ledger!!
so what??
heath came up with most of the joker stuff
and nolan is partly to blame for heaths death
The makeup is similar to ”the crows”.The face mask was cursed
Nolan said heath hasnt done an out there role b4 and still had faith in him.
Heath was drained after the role,he could not sleep he had pnemonia and insomnia from it
NOLAN FEELS GUILTY
“What made Nolan’s joker was the script and the direction!”
You are a moron. It’s Heath Ledger Joker not Nolan’s even though he was the director.
Heath Ledger brought a lot of ideas to the character and PLAYED!!!! him. Nolan knows this, that’s why he said he will never replace Heath Ledger.
I can’t see Nolan placing one of Batman’s superhuman villains into the realistic world of the first two films. There are many lesser known yet more formidable bad guys in Batman’s rogue gallery. The Riddler just don’t raise the steaks from the Joker. They need someone sinister like Victor Zsasz or Calendar Man.
I’m still hoping to see Guy Pierce in a Nolan Batman film.
would love to see them bring back Batman’s Bat Shark Repellent (in 3D of course)
I see Hardy as being the new mob boss.
Any word if Anthony Michael Hall will be back as Engel? I still think there’s a story there…..
this guy is such a star, it’s soooo obvious, i’m soo late on this one…..
As said before, see him in Bronson, no not about the DeathWish actor…
Can’t believe he was also the baddie in Star Trek Nemesis
Maybe Hardy is the new mayor who gets kidnapped by villain xxx
Personally, I’m hoping Nestor Carbonell returns for that role.
Hes not playing Riddler.Riddler is a total non-fit for him.I bet you anything hes playing Black Mask/Roman Sionis.
Morgan Freeman and a lot of rumors have hinted at the Riddler, so he may be in it, but that doesn’t mean hes going to be the only villain.Besides, it seems like I remember David Goyer basically implying they’d be using a villain never before seen in live-action film.So Black Mask definitely makes sense for Hardy.
Who knows? Maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt WILL end up being cast as the Riddler like a lot of people have been speculating.Just because they were in Inception together doesnt’ mean that’d keep Nolan from putting them both in the next Batman.
Look at all the Nolan sheep still blinded by the fact that they think Dark Knight was a GREAT movie. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a Batman villain? Why, because the kid thinks he’s Heath Ledger and tries to look and act like him? Why are some of you people so fucking dumb and blind? Nolan’s Batman movies suck dick, just like the people obsessed with him. Retarded sheep.
Isn’t it past your bedtime?
… because he tries to look like him? It’s totally his fault that he looks like him, right?
You’re not really a sheep if you like a movie that other people like. You just like that Movie. You’re also not a non-sheep by not liking a movie that other people like, you’re just someone who didn’t like that movie.
Saying someone is dumb and blind because they disagree with your opinion is truly ignorant and shows yourself to be a total fool. Like whatever you like, but only the truly retarded consider their opinions superior to all others.
Also, you didn’t back up your rant with any type of argument. I’d love to hear how the movies “suck dick” as you so eloquently wrote. I thought they were pretty well made.
I’m also interested in what way Gordon-Leavitt tries to look like Ledger. Did he get plastic surgery? Did he recently purchase a long curly haired wig that I’m unfamiliar with? Did he start speaking with an Australlian accent?
Ok, you choose not to like the Dark Knight because you feel that you need that to be your identity. Fair enough, be that guy. But be that guy by making a valid point.
i hate trends when iphone 1st came out i didnt want one cuz everyone wanted one.Every1 has a youtube account i didnt want one,every1 has twitter then i dont want one
I hated TDK IT SUCKED
its sad no one cared abt ledger till after he played the joker
the same people not WANTING HEATH REPLACED ARE THE SAME ONES
WHO SAID HE WOULD SUCK
Whether or not those films “sucked” is a matter of opinion. Batman Begins in my opinion was a great reinvention of the Batman franchise. I thought The Dark Knight caught almost too much hype due to Ledger’s untimely death, but i mean come on…..he did a great job in that role. Bale’s batman was a little ridiculous in the second film with respect to the batman voice being overdone, but he did alright.
As far as nolan and his directorial chops….its hard to believe that you can watch films such as The Prestige and Inception and not see the amazing amount of creativity that has to go into films like that. That being said, your opinion is your opinion and you’re entitled to it…just dont go around slinging insults because you feel differently.
Uh-oh…comment fail!
Please do explain yourself. Like, *actually* explain yourself if it is in your capacity to do so. I’m a little confused about much of the content of your post, as it is comprised of largely obnoxious and seemingly ignorant statements and questions. I am truly curious.
While I agree that it is somewhat difficult to completely ignore the staggering momentum that gathered around The Dark Knight in the period following its release, there is definitely a reason and impetus for such a fervid consensus. That being said, I’d like to think that I am neither “fucking dumb” nor figuratively “blind” regarding most things (in this case, film), and that I do think The Dark Knight is a great film. I hold such a belief not because I am a quadrupedal, ruminant mammal; but because of my own experiences, well-informed opinions, contextualizations, and histories regarding movies. For these same reasons, I think Batman 3 will be fantastic, especially if Hardy is on board.
Like many (you’d be surprised), I am not “obsessed” with Nolan or his films, but I have a very high opinion of him and his work. Further (again, my opinion), he hasn’t made a poor film yet (both technically or creatively), not even below a level I’d call decent. Do I think there is an immense space in which he can grow as a director? Absolutely. But considering much of the other tripe that has been sloshed around the cinema in the last decade or so, he comes out nearer the top than many on the quality barometer.
I think Nolan generally becomes a better filmmaker every time he makes one, so I’m very much looking forward to the third Batman film. And, frankly, I don’t care what role Hardy has; he’s an incredible actor. This will be fun and likely very, very satisfying.
Well said, not a sheep like all of you! Though I loved Batman Begins, Dark Knight had none of the qualities that made that movie effective. Zero character development in the secondary and tertiary characters, unmemorable generic ethnic gangsters, a romantic triangle that was dead on arrival, a leading lady that was a complete blank, a clusterf**k of a third act that clumsily rushed through the Two Face plotline, and a major plot point (Harvey and Rachel’s kidnapping) that happens off screen!! Someone please explain to me why we were supposed to care if Two Face finds two cops we never saw because they were involved in a kidnapping the director didn’t bother to show us! It doesn’t work dramatically. Frantic doesn’t mean interesting.
And you Nolan fanboys, don’t try to accuse me of not understanding the movie, you’re not that smart and neither was the film. Try addressing my points, which are nuts and bolts criticisms about the filmmaking.
Congrats on posting one of the STUPIDEST posts EVER!
LMAO!
Agreed just say NO to Ellen Page.
Hardy will play either Black Mask or Bane. The Ridder sucks.
Yes, Gordon-Levitt is a decent fit for the Riddler. NO the Riddler doesn’t present a level of danger that anywhere close to the Joker: granted NO villain really can, Riddler is still too tame. You want a third act that still presents Gotham as a very dangerous place inspite of Batman: not a place with “know it alls” in gaudy suits and a bad case of OCD that always leads to their defeat. That=NOT menacing!
Black Mask seems a likely fit for Hardy and the story arc. “Nightfall” would be awesome, but those who know it know it’s too much to cover in one movie.
Though The Riddler isn’t a physical threat.
He could be an orchestrator of mayhem. Paying off common psychos (random members of the rogues) to do his bidding.
p.s. Hardy For Black Mask
I can see Hardy as The Riddler easily. First off, The Riddler would seem tailor-made for a Nolan Batman flick. The themes of puzzles, mystery, conundrums, etc…think of all that and the character, then think back to Nolan’s other movies like Memento, Insomnia, Inception, et. al. I think The Riddler could work in the Nolan/Batman movieverse.
I also can see Hardy as either Black Mask or possibly even Deadshot.
Think of the ending of The Dark Knight: Batman is being hunted down by the police. It’d be highly possible that the mob would be hunting him down too. What better way to hunt the Bat down than to hire someone that for all intents and purposes could be his opposite as much as his equal. Both are well conditioned in combat and strategy and use gadgets at their disposal.
Yet at the same time whereas Batman doesn’t use guns or kill, Deadshot does. And Deadshot was featured in the animated dvd Batman: Gotham Knight that served as a tie-in/prelude between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, taking place in that continuity.
On Killer Croc, that could be a stretch to do in the Nolan Batman movies, UNLESS they went along the lines of what they did with that character in Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo’s Joker graphic novel. Look it up.
Tom Hardy as Hush.
He’ll be killer Croc. I’d love to see Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock) as the Riddler.
I think he’s a perfect fit for Hush. Plus, Hush is a perfect fit for Nolan.
please no riddler or catwoman ,riddler is a ridculous villan more suited to adam west style batman @ catwoman has failed twice before i’d rather a knightfall adaptation i know bane has been seen in film before but they did his character no justice
he will be trained by batman and then he’ll fight rocky for the title, hope its in 3D though.
I lie to think outside of the box and think that he would make a great clay face. The movie Bronson absolutely rules. Dude is a master.
Can anyone catch the irony hereAside from the Batman angle… Tom Hardy starring in a comedy with new Captain Kirk Chris Pine? The guy played the villain in Star Trek Nemesis, the film that tanked oldTrek and now he’s starring in a film with nuKirk? Now Nolan wants to cast Hardy as a villain in the next Batman film? Does ANYONE remember how that went back in 2002 LAST time someone cast Hardy as a villain in a scifi film? -_- I’m not saying Hardy is a bad actor, just that in my opinion he’s suited best for nonvillians, or at least villains in nonscifi films LOL
Don’t blame Hardy for NEMESIS, it was a crappy script and a crappy premise. In fact, he was the only good thing in that movie. He didn’t sink the franchise, it was on it’s last leg anyway.
Good for Toin, he is an amazing talent who deserves his shot. I see an Oscar in his future, he is that GOOD.
Anyone think that there’s even a possibility that Bale’s being replaced as the lead?
