EXCLUSIVE: Jemima Kirke and Allison Williams have landed the two leads opposite Lena Dunham in Dunham’s HBO comedy pilot executive produced by Judd Apatow and Jenni Kohner. Also cast in the pilot in a supporting role is Adam Driver (HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack).
The untitled comedy, which 24-year-old prodigy Dunham wrote and will direct/co-executive produce, is about the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of three girlfriends in their early 20′s: Hannah (Dunham), an eternal intern at a publishing house in SoHo and a hopeful writer; Marnie (Williams), a sexy, bitchy and ambitious assistant at a slick political PR firm whose goal id to practice environmental law; and Jessa (Kirke), a space cadet with hippie tendencies who wants to be an artist/educator. Gersh-repped Driver will play a handsome but slightly off carpenter with whom Hannah has been sleeping for the past 7 months.
Kirke co-starred opposite Dunham in Dunham’s much buzzed about feature Tiny Furniture, which won the top prize at this year’s South by Southwest and just earned two Gotham Film Awards nominations. Dunham was the writer, director and star of the film, with Kirke playing her friend. (photo of the two from the movie is above; the trailer for the movie, which features
Dunham and Kirke, is at the bottom of the story.) This seems to be the first major professional acting gig for Williams who graduated from Yale earlier this year and is pursuing a career as an actress and a singer. The daughter of the NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams has gained online popularity with several videos, including the viral That’s Why I Chose Yale and her recent performance of the Mad Men theme song (video below).
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

That Mad Man song was fairly ridiculous. Point?? Between her and the band, they all had these smug, knowing looks as if they were so cool and in on something… I kept waiting for the punchline. But no. It was just a straight, cheesy performance. Simon says… “A little pitchy in places. A bit coy. Seen better on cruise ships. All rather forgettable.”
somebody’s jealooooouuuuussssss!
Loved it ! Love her.. Must see” That’s why I chose Yale” on You Tube
I enjoyed “My dad bought me into Yale and now into TV” much better.
As a Yalie, I can tell you – we’re not that proud of that video. Everything else Allison/Sam/Kurt have done, absolutely. But that video is not representative of Yale’s students and culture. Despite our a cappella groups, we don’t live in a college version of Glee.
Dad must be proud. Great voice and trademark tan. Actually, hadn’t heard of her. I sort of liked the tune and the trailer looked good.
Go Yale! Ok, they didn’t admit me but I survived (and enjoyed NYC much better vs New Haven).
Allison Williams has a voice like an angel! So pretty and seems really funny. And Jemima Kirke is one of the funniest new actresses in ages, not to mention gorgeous. Should be fun!
“Tiny Furniture” looks boring and amateurish. I think the real feat was that she was able to get funding for it. Good for her. I hope the HBO show from this “prodigy” (Oh, Nellie–really?) is better although it sounds like more of the same, e.g. “assorted humiliations and rare triumphs” of 20-something women. Is it 1998 again?
It’s inspiring that a woman like Dunham who doesn’t conform to traditional beauty standards can get a deal in the industry.
it’s not like her looks or her talent had anything to do with it. her mother is laurie simmons.
Who’s Laurie Simmons? Ok, I just wikipedia-ed her, but still… is she that big a deal? Everybody’s somebody’s kid.
“Huh, what??” is exactly right. If this is what’s passing for creativity and/or talent these days, no wonder entertainment is circling the bottom of the bowl.
So pretentious. This casting was a inside job.
You all just wait. I’ve seen her perform in a few plays at Yale. Ms. Williams certainly has the chops, congrats to her!
I wonder if HBO remembers they did a series called Sex and The City some years back? Advice from the cheap seats: trying to clone a hit never works.
Dunham’s pilot actually contains a direct reference to SATC, and it’s kind of a diss. A lame girl is a big SATC fan. And the Jessa character has never heard of it.
Ahhh the power of nepotism.
College Musical FTW
