EXCLUSIVE: Judd Apatow is on the clock for the next comedy he’ll write, produce and direct. Universal has set a June 1, 2012 release date for an untitled film Apatow is writing right now. Aside from his prolific output as writer/producer, Apatow has made all three of his directing vehicles for Universal: The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Funny People. The first two were big hits and while Apatow took his first critical brickbats for the latter, he’s among a handful of smart writer/directors you want to watch evolve as a filmmaker.

FREAKS AND GEEKS MOVIE! DO IT! REUNION!
He’ll do The Freaks and Geeks movie when his film career begins to stall… I’m guessing some time soon. Casting his regulars for his movies is getting very old and annoying, they play the same characters in all of his movies.
Funny People was the best movie of 2009 and the best film of Sandler’s career. So much depth and heart. Knocked Up was one of the greatest comedies of all time. Judd Apatow is the best comedic director of our time. His subtlety is unparalleled.
Best movie of 2009? Of Sandler’s career? What are you on?! It was 2 hours too long. It had several ending points but just kept going, oh and it wasn’t funny. Sandler’s best movie was Push hands down.
Jeremiah – “Best Comedic Director of our time”…Uh, step away from the bong dude. It’s making you delusional.
When has he ever “evolved as a filmmaker”? I find some of Apatow’s comedies funny but they’re all crudely made, cheap looking and easily disposable. As a director he’s not particularly talented, and IMO there’s going to come a time when his formula stalls out. Perhaps with FUNNY PEOPLE it already has?
Please NO Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd or your wife.
FUNNY PEOPLE was a really good film that was totally marketed wrong. It’s a drama, not a comedy, and that’s the problem, audiences were expecting an Adam Sandler comedy. Like in PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, Sandler is a very talented dramatic actor – the only problem is his fan base doesn’t want to see him to drama. I wish more directors like Apatow and P.T. Anderson would take chances with Sandler (he was even good in SPANGLISH, even though the movie overall kind of stunk).
Lemme guess, another raunchy comedy about a schlubby “average joe” that somehow manages to get a girl much smarter and attractive than he is.
Ha — I tend to enjoy most of Apatow’s movies, but you’re absolutely correct that the ridiculous male-female pairings need to stop:
Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl? Jason Segel and Mila Kunis? The guys from Superbad and Emma Stone?
JUST STOP IT!!! Keep your Schlub Boy beds Hot Girl fantasies to yourself, don’t foist them on the moviegoing population.
You realise that Apatow only produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Superbad right?
In the three films he’s directed there has only been one pairing that was “Schlub Boy beds Hot Girl”.
Keep your unfounded Apatow theories to yourself.
Um, how about the likes of Elizabeth Banks throwing herself at Steve Carell in “40 Year Old Virgin,” or a whole bevy of supermodels throwing themselves at Adam Sandler in “Funny People” (OK, he was rich and famous in that movie, but still twice as old and still looking like Adam Sandler).
Oh, right, Apatow was “just” a producer on those other movies — I’m sure he had no input on casting.
I take it all back. Totally unfounded.
This director and his posse of actors are hype. Yes, occasionally there will be some funny lines or situations in their movies. But collectively and individually get over yourselves. The guys at Pixar have made better comedic movies on a consistent basis than you ever could. The 40 Year Old Virgin was just a bad movie. The movie looked cheap and the funny faces does not make a movie.
I think though the buddy actors are a bit done for now. Steve C., and Seth R., are one trick ponies-take a break.
You must be over 40.
Yeah and so is Apatow. What does age have to do with anything?
Cast Mel Gibson
And the female lead goes to?
This may come as a surprise, but it’s …. Leslie Mann, ladies and gentlemen, Leslie Mann!
Would like to see Judd work with an all black cast with Will Smith and Denzel as the lead. Fireworks!
My god, so much hate in every comment. The internet just brings out the ugliest in people.
I enjoyed Funny People and I for one look forward to Judd’s next film.
I was just thinking the same thing. It’s sick!
Apatow is the Paul Mazursky of his era, and Funny People is his Blume in Love. No more, no less.
Funny People was two movies. The first movie was amazingly done. The second movie (right about the point Leslie Mann shows up) was cheesy, pointless drivel.
STOP CASTING YOUR FREAKING WIFE IN ALL YOUR MOVIES! YOUR NOT ROB ZOMBIE!!!!
My wife and I really liked Funny People. Now that it’s running on cable a lot we end up just throwing it on and getting hooked until the end.
The problem with that movie was the budget, not the material.
It’s a great small screen movie. It works well at home on TV. It’s nothing Judd should ever have to apologize for.
His movies are great. If you want to hate on them because it’s popular go right ahead.
For me, his movies always make me laugh and entertain me.
As for the schlubby guy getting the hot girl, I’d hate for some of you to see my wife. I still don’t know how I got her. Oh yeah, not I remember…I’m real and I made her laugh.
Hate to break it to you, but lots of schlubby guys get hot girls in this world. It’s not just a fantasy.
Whats going on with Business Trip? I was looking forward to that one.
His movies are so ugly-looking. The cinematography is consistently dreadful, whether he directs or produces the ugliness remains. Plus, they’re not funny and unrealistic. Just because one commenter got a hot girl doesn’t make it normal because it isn’t. At least not in the real world where you’ll more likely see two fatties together than a hot girl with a schlub.
Hmmm…release date with no finished script=TROUBLE. Oh wait, call 4 non-funny but think they are comedians last minute and shoot it. $12 opening weekend with a $25-$30 budget plus another $15 million on marketing. Another genius flop for Universal. WELL DONE. Come them coming.
Do you realize how many movies are given release dates before the scripts are even STARTED? It’s simply the studio staking their claim for that weekend, since so many movies come out nowadays in comparison to 20 years ago. And unless he’s secretly writing Transformers 4, his movies only take a couple of months to shoot and edit, so he’s got plenty of time to finish his script.
hope it is with paul rudd. loved him in all of judd’s movies. he is funny and a great actor.
WTF is the deal with these comments? Judd rules. I love Leslie Mann. She’s real, she’s hot and she’s a great comedic actress. Seth Rogen, on the other hand… well, we don’t need to see him anymore.
Can’t wait to see Judd’s new flick. The one guarantee is that it will be funny.
No one rags on Eastwood for using team actors and technicians; professionals he likes to work with; so why shank Apatow on it?
Clearly he has assembled as either Producer / Director some new ‘big screen’ talent, many of whom have gone on to greater success, all of whom are fresh and have talent.
Clearly his wit and pace have delivered a fresh look at the boy/man genre that was previously the domain of Mr Sandler, with the exception that Mr Apatow has gambled on the public having a greater appreciation of character depth. This is in sharp contrast to Mr Sandler’s minimalistic exploration of the same, which is not to say that his characters are not engaging nor charming.
It’s just that frat boys grow up, read a bit, think, have and lose jobs, think hard, have families and responsibilities, want to remember the past, but also want to have a dose of reality as well, as long as there’s some fun and laughs on the way.
It could be the age old argument of style verses substance going on here.
What is not in doubt as that both Mr Apatow and Sandler are great cinematic entertainers, whatever their roles, hits and near misses and we should be thankful for that and the billions they entertain and the thousands they employ.
