3RD UPDATE: View The Dilemma‘s new trailer here.
2ND UPDATE 10:40 AM: In Hollywood, so the saying goes, you can know that someone is lying because their lips are moving. Universal has now told me twice this morning that it sent an advance copy of the trailer for director Ron Howard’s Vince Vaughn-starring comedy The Dilemma to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for vetting, claiming the organization didn’t object to it. But GLAAD just issued a news release strenuously disputing that:
“Last month, Universal shared a link to the trailer for the film The Dilemma with GLAAD. After reviewing, GLAAD called on Universal to remove the scene where the word ‘gay’ was used as a pejorative from the trailer. Today, after Anderson Cooper also spoke out against the scene, Universal confirmed to GLAAD that the offensive joke will be removed from promotional campaigns from this point forward, including in the trailer currently playing in movie theatres.
“The use of the word ‘gay’ in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.”
Universal, however, told me it sent the trailer to GLAAD ”before it ever went anywhere and there was no comment about it at all”. But GLAAD counters that it did not support or give a positive response to the trailer. ”We’ve been working with Universal for some time to get them to remove it.” When the trailer debuted three weeks ago, complaints immediately came in to the studio and its marketing department. But Universal claims that’s when it called GLAAD again to “double check” there were no objections. The studio tells me that “only then did GLAAD say, ’This is probably questionable. It’s not a major offense at all. But it’s best not to use it in the campaign so it avoids any questions.’” Hmm. Given how long ago the trailer began airing, it does seem that Universal decided to remove it and substitute a new one later only because of Anderson Cooper’s televised complaint this week (see below).
UPDATE 10:30 AM: Universal just issued this statement in response to my story: “The teaser trailer for The Dilemma was not intended to cause anyone discomfort. In light of growing claims that the introduction to the trailer is insensitive, it is being replaced. A full trailer, which has been in the works for some time, will post online later today.”
EXCLUSIVE 8:45 AM: Universal has a dilemma on The Dilemma. The studio recently debuted the first official trailer for its forthcoming Imagine comedy starring Vince Vaughn and directed by Ron Howard, and the reaction in Hollywood was dismay and disappointment. Not because it looks like a stinker. But because it uses the term “gay” as an insult right in the first scene. “Ladies and Gentlemen, electric cars are so gay,” Vaughn’s character tells a packed conference room to indicate his ridicule. Immediately after Deadline posted the trailer (removed today by Universal), Industry insiders took to the comments section for a heated discussion over the appropriateness of showcasing this scene much less including it in the movie at all. Now outsiders like CNN’s Anderson Cooper (see below) are disapproving of it as well. Until now, Universal hasn’t made any change to the trailer. But I’ve just learned the studio finally is responding to the pressure and planning to alter it. However, studio executives still appear bewildered by the situation “because we showed the trailer to gay groups like GLAAD and gay executives here and gays in our marketing department and no one was offended and everyone had a positive response,” a Uni insider claims to me. However, on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show this week, CNN host Anderson Cooper was interviewed by satellite on the subject of school bullying, and he brought up the Dilemma trailer and criticized it:
“I was sitting in a movie theater over the weekend and there was a preview of a movie, and in it, the actor said, ‘That’s so gay,’ and I was shocked that not only that they put it in the movie, but that they put that in the preview. They thought that it was okay to put that in a preview for the movie to get people to go and see it… We’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable cause those words are hurting kids.
“Someone else I talked to recently,” Anderson continued, “said that the words people use and the things people say about other kids online, it enters into their internal dialogue. And when you’re a kid, it can change the way you see yourself and the way you think about yourself, and the worth that you give to yourself. I think we need to really focus on what language we’re using and how we’re treating these kids.”

Sorry, but that’s the way 95% + of the population talks.
Is that a good thing?
DOESN’T MATTER. It’s real life. Gay is not a race, they shouldn’t be complaining. It was genius and funny. Whoever thinks it’s not light-hearted is ignorant.
“genius and funny”? “whoever thinks it’s not light-hearted is ignorant”? OK, no I don’t think that Ron Howard, Allan Loeb and Vince Vaughn were trying to be mean spirited here, but let’s be honest, it’s not a very creative joke.
Here’s a better one: Ladies and Gentlemen, electric cars blow. Not like an over eager teeange girl on prom night, but more like that bike your parents gave you for your tenth birthday that had the streamers when all you wanted was the one with the racing stripe.
or is that joke now offensive to women?
CONTEXT-
The context of a word is what really matters in our society, no one used the word in spite. Even though the word in the context was construed(not so much as “bad”)as sissy or feminate, a way in which gay men usually act (hybrids are sissy sompared to older cars). Same thing with the “N”(though it has more hatful history) it is used pro-dominatly as a term of indearment when used by youth Also retard is usually only used in a hateful manner, because guess what IT”S ALL ABOUT CONTEXT. Overall, people who have problems with this small joke, are overly sensitive.
Gay is not a race. Really? That’s your justification. Being female isn’t a race either. Would a nice misogynistic slur be ok with you instead genius. Pay attention. Kids are dying over the ignorance of people like you. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, you did call the trailer genius. Maybe you just need to get out more.
Gay and female are not the same thing. Gay is a choice (and not a particularly wise one) and if people want to ridicule that choice, that is their business. Baseless statements like “kids are dying over the ignorance of people like you” are far more dangerous than calling something ‘gay’.
Since when is gender choice a race issue? Homosexuality is a choice people make and they shouldn’t be complaining. Are homosexuals the only ones that have the right of free speech?
Really? Kids are dying because Vince Vaugh said electric cars are gay? Talk about over-dramatic!
Sexual Orientation is NOT a choice. And you posters who keep saying that it is demonstrate your ignorance and your hate and your bias in saying so. EVERY SINGLE SCIENTIFIC STUDY EVER DONE (and by “every” I mean EVERY SINGLE F*CKING STUDY EVER) has concluded that there is no “choice” involved. But you worthless lying sacks of monkey dung just keep on saying it, as if by saying it over and over again you can MAKE it true.
Face the truth: You simply hate and loathe homosexuals, and therefore ENJOY seeing them humiliated. Shame on you. I hope you enjoy eternity in HELL, which is where you are going.
Moderator — you keep up “gay is a choice and not a particularly wise one” but delete the comment of a follow-up commenter trying to show how offensive those comments are? Nice.
Yahhhh you figured out females are not a race. Using this analogy is a slippery slope. I defy you to prove that someone is “gay” how do you establish this? ANYONE can say they are gay for any number of reasons. It is possible to establish race and gender, biologically, there is still NO emphirical test for homosexuality.
That means you yourself are gay Joseph.
Cause obviously someone borderline retarded as yourself can’t tell the difference between being straight and being gay.
Care to tell about your homosexual tendencies? Seeing as this issue isn’t clear cut for you?
(Oh, and to the people claiming gay people are choosing to be gay, and then going on to commit suicide over a ‘choice’. Going on to hide their ‘choice’ from their family on account of fearing being ostracized’, going on to hide their sexualities and run for conservative political offices only to be shamefully outed later on in their lives through scandal…
Will those neanderthals please take the next flight to hell and stay there. Thanks)
Name a Gay Study that proves it. *thinks* isnt that an oxymoron?
Kids are dying over this??? Yes, I have heard the panic in the streets from gay activists including Ellen…EPIDEMIC! EPIDEMIC! 4 KIDS DOES NOT AN EPIDEMIC MAKE! Life is tough..GET OVER IT YOU PUSSIES. SELF CENTERED, ME ME ME…ITS ALL ABOUT ME…Screw everyone else who I leave behind…I have to end my SUFFERING..What a joke. The blame for this is not on gay bullies or gay jokes in movies, its on the liberal enabling PUKES that have turned our children into simpering, bags of puke, unable to cope with the real qorld.
It’s not a choice, it’s a genetic defect.
Hey hunny, lighten up, will ya!
Sexual preference may not be a choice….but suicide certainly is.
Not a race, not a minority. Ever met an ex-African American? How about an ex-caucasian? How about an ex-Hispano?
Get help while you can and be an ex-smoker. (?!)
Get over it. There’s no need to justify this trailer.
Hey David. Nobody cares about your stupid studies about gay people. This conversation isn’t really about homosexuality. Vince Vaughn says it himself in the trailer. This is about THINGS being gay. Which is analogous to a person acting gay – like a guy wearing skinny jeans. Gay and straight guys act gay, but gay guys do more often because usually they are acting gay by speaking. Oh, and talking with a gay lisp IS a choice. So yeah, it’s their fault they’re annoying little girls. Non-flamboyant gays are totally cool though.
Gay is not a choice just like you being an idiot is not a choice. It’s the way you were born. You can’t change the fact that you’re brain is a less evolved version of what it should be, and gay people can’t change the fact that they were born gay. As Ron Burgandy once said “it’s science.”
SETH WALSH COVER STORY IN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES TODAY / FRIDAY
Everyone should take 10 minutes to read the frnt page story about Seth Walsh hanging himself that appears today in the paper…..especially the filmmakers and Universal execs.
Just because you don’t think words or taunting ‘should’ hurt…try telling that to anyone that has to endure it daily.
I can’t imagine this scene would be permitted if they said “electric cars were so Mexican/Black/Jew/Asian….
Just say ‘lame’…the scene isn’t going to lose any punch.
David . . . YOU don’t know the truth about homosexuality. I do. I’ll guarantee you I’ve read & far more studies than you have on this subject – it’s my job. There is no evidence of a “gay gene” (and that possibility is rapidly diminishing with ever study published) & far more data points to the vast majority of homosexuals, especially men, are that way because of, among other things, physical sexual abuse before the age of reason. I have access to at least a dozen studies that the mainstream media purposefully ignore because homosexual activists would go nuts if any media reported the truth. So you’ve read studies that you’ve been told to read. Great. I’ve read the rest of them. I know the truth. You’re wrong. Sorry.
very well said
Chris, you are a really ridiculous person. Not one thing you have said makes ANY sort of sense, and your attempts to justify yourself after saying the trailer doesn’t need justifying is laughable.
Things cannot be gay, Chris. Sorry. Gay=happy or homosexual. Not things. There is no acting gay. Gay is a sexual orientation. It’s not an act. There is no gay lisp, and there are no “flamboyant gays”. Gay is gay, and that’s what it comes down to. It’s a sexual orientation and self-conceptual term. And that’s it.
Try growing up a bit and using words in the right way, so not to sound immature and ignorant.
Lighten Opp= Have I ever met an ex African-American? Well, have I never met an ex-gay. No, because they don’t exist. And anyone who thinks they do are completely brainwashed, blind to reality, and anti-gay themselves. You cannot be an ex-sexual orientation. You cannot change your brain.
Moochie=http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/06/30/genetics-and-environment-shape-sexual-orientation/2522.html
The fact you would even care about this situation to the point you do “studies” to justify your weird paranoia and homophobia is absolutely pathetic. You are a loser.
Moochie and Mike you’re bigots. I’ve said it before, either you’re for full equality and recognize being LGBT isn’t a choice or you’re a bigot. There is no in-between. You can continue to fabricate stories of studies that prove otherwise but know we’re on to you. For decades hateful and ill-informed people including religious radicals have relied on repetitive propaganda to push their bigotry. It’s clear you two are the worst kind. I’m sorry Drudge ever pointed you idiots to this blog.
Lighten Opp=Being a minority is not simply about race. And I’ve never met an ex-gay. Because they do not exist and you cannot be an ex-sexual orientation. You cannot change your brain, therefore you cannot change your sexual attractions. Common sense.
Moochie=The fact you would even concern yourself with the sexuality of others to the point you have “read studies” (ie. anti-gay conservative biased lies) to justify your anti-gay views is absolutely pathetic. How is someone so affected by something so unimportant?
http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/06/30/genetics-and-environment-shape-sexual-orientation/2522.html
Sexual orientation is not a choice, and is from genetic, individual-specific environment, and biological factors.
“BEING GAY IS A CHOICE” uhmmm….huh?
Oh…I see. Gay people are naturally heterosexual but they ‘choose’ a lifestyle that goes against their own natural desires to subject themselves daily to numerous forms of religious / political persecution, estrangement from family, inability to marry, discrimination in housing and employment, taunting, threats of physical violence or even death and then lie about their choice by insisting they were born that way.
So how would you describe something that ” is so gay” ? The TV show “Will and Grace” was so campy about homosexuality but no one found that to be over the line. Why is describibg some THING as ‘gay” be so objectionable? If it is, then come up with another suitable decriptive adjective, like, “that’s sooo homosexual”. Yeah, that’s a winner!
Think of the CHILDREN!! You’re not against children are you? Because if you don’t support then you must want to harm children!!
hahaha, does anyone really buy this argument anymore?
Its all about context and I’m sorry but I’m inclined to agree that a majority of people use the term “Gay” to describe many things. It is no way a derogatory remark about homosexuals. This is not offensive just misunderstood. I realize it may not be right to some, but you can’t please everyone can you?
So being gay and being called gay are different? It comes across as though you arnt comfortable being gay and angry when someone says your gay. If you arnt happy with your choices then choose something else. sometimes the truth hurts. You need to make a choice on weather or not you let it hurt you.
why dont we avoid all of the banter and use only one word for this life style ‘homosexual’ and let the word gay go back to its original meaning of joyfulness.or we can keep finding foolish things to fight about.
Nobody wants to see gay anything. We feel it’s something else crammed down our throats. You are free to watch but not me. Peace.
Settle down knobcheese. The word gay was around long before homosexuals wanted a word that described their lifestyle, without the odious connotations that words like fag and queer allowed.
Methink the likes of homosexuals just want something to be offended about. Like when someone says they don’t like the homosexual lifestyle, arms and wrists start flapping, ‘how dare someone not like our lifestyle’, they screech and holler.
And I use the word homosexual because the word gay to me means happy, and I won’t allow the likes of you and other so easily offended homosexuals tell me that I can’t use the word in the way of its original intention.
Over in Australia, where I live, some idiot schoolteacher told his class that when singing about this kookaburra in a much loved Aussie folk song, they weren’t to use the line, ‘gay your life must be’. As in not that the kooka is a flaming homosexual, but a happy young chappy. Watch out ‘The Flintstones’. ‘We’ll have a gay old time’. Ooh, I can see lawsuits here, Fred will have to pay a million rocks in compensation for all the suffering and hurt feelings he has engendered over the years.
This is what the world is coming to. Little girls are being genitally mutilated for a disgusting culture, wars are being fought, many people are dying, our world is supposedly dying because of the bullshit that is global warming, and you bloody lot carry on like fucking pork chops, like petulant little brats, because some bloke said that something was gay. And in the context of how he used it, the word means lame.
What a bunch of lamearse whinging bloody sooks. Just don’t be forcing your lifestyle down peoples’ throats, live your life, let us live ours, and don’t pillory and call people homophobes just because they disapprove of what you do.
I could care less, do what you will in your own home, but just like boy and girl couples, keep your shenanigans off our streets, no overly outrageous displays of affection, and for mine all will be well.
And by overly outrageous displays of affection on public streets, and this is the extreme here of course, just think to San Francisco, when you lot have your little mardi gras or whatever it’s called, and streets are blocked off to vehicular traffic, and behind those barriers, but in full view of anyone who is walking by, men are fellating others, and of course sodomy and handjobs are on offer, with no-one batting an eye, because to do so would incur the wrath of you lot, and guess what, the word homophobe would be bandied about.
I’d call you a big bunch of whinging girls, but boy, would that cause a flurry of wrist flapping, so I won’t.
Kids are dying of many different reasons,I dont think crying it was because hes gay every time is the correct message to send.Im a strait white male who for the most part could care less what two adults do.But say my son is beat up at school and the kid who did it gets probation.Same scenario but my son says he was called a Fa* and the kid who did it was charged with a hate crime and goes to jail with a felony conviction. How is this justice when one group is given special treatment. Why not protect all the same.I think America has come a long way in the way of tollerance, but if you think you can wipe out biggotry your crazy. It will always be in some people.
Wow David, you’re a pretty mean person. Just because someone disagrees with you you have to scream obscenities at them and send them to Hell. Niiice job representing your, uummm, “race”. …yeah.
Kids are gay now? Oh no we are France
Thanks, Moochie, for one of the most idiotic postings ever on Deadline Hollywood. I’m wondering: Is the name Moochie a choice or were you born with it?
Yeah, yeah, yeah… being gay is not a choice. We’ve heard it all. But, it was pretty clear in all the tapings of the so called gay and lesbian parades that all the homosexuals there seem to think it is. I remember a big parade in DC and they were all chanting, “10% is not enough! Recruit! Recruit! RECRUIT!”, like they ever had more than 1-2% of the population. Although with all of the Hollywood and government promotions, they probably have raised that number by now.
And, if someone was born that way, they could still abstain and not practice their deviant behaviors. But, what the hey, you all get a choice just stop asking the rest of us to come up with cures and pay for all of the medical issues that you get from your lifestyles.
Like the old saying goes, ‘You made your bed, go lie in it.’ And, stop trying to get your crummy lifestyles pushed down the throats of our innocent children.
If they re-listed homosexuality as the psychological disorder it is, we would not have kids killing themselves thinking they are “normal”.
As to the word, gay, or fag, or any other word that about blacks, italians, or anyone else on the planet, as an American with free speech and the right to both be offended and offensive, who cares what anyone wants to be called?
They can use whatever words they want. So can I.
The gay organization telling gay kids they are the same as everyone else, when they have a sever mental disorder, causes more pain and death then any harassment could ever cause. Everyone should tell them, and any other organization bothered by how people address them, to get over it AND stfu!

@ David. Can you please link me to a peer-reviewed medical journal, which unequivocally confirms the existence of the gay gene?
Well it doesnt matter what you think because your thoughts are not reality. Your feelings do not trump truth. Homosexuatlity is a decision as much as being a clepto-maniac, a liar, a thief. All of the above are moral decisions. God did not make anyone a homosexual, liar or thief. He did not make people to be fornicators, adulterers or of any one political ideal. Sin is where all the obove come from. Agree or not does not change the truth. Put your time into helping kids out of the propensity for any moral degradation , or sexual impurity. You who accept sexual openess are the ones who are hurting our kids
Let’s face it… even Darwin and Mother Nature snub a homosexual lifestyle as it produces NO offspring… call it “Survival of the Fittest” at work.
“Tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society”
D James Kennedy
It looks like those on the left are false prophets… leading the weak and young down a path to destruction.
Jesus Christ, in His own words, tells us that FEW will enter Heaven and MANY will enter the wide gate that leads to destruction. Read Matthew 7:13-14
Judgment Day is approaching and what a sweet day it will be to have the reprobates of the world removed…. permanently. Although It is quite sad that Jesus was sacrificed for all, and most will choose to deny Him.
Time to shake the dust off my sandals and prepare for His coming.
I’m getting so tired of the coddled and pampered special interest groups being able to dictate language to the rest of us. Words only have the power to hurt or to offend that YOU yourself give them. How dare anybody try to dictate to me what language is appropriate` and what is not. Get off your moral high horse, get back in the real world, quit trying to be exclusive from the masses and demanding “special” considerations. If people want to use the word “gay” as an adjective, then nobody has the right to tell them they cannot. Period.
When people get a backbone and stop letting all you GAY, liberal, tree huggers try to make everything “politically correct”, this will be a better country. Being GAY is a choice and a lifestyle. NO ONE is born gay, that is a liberal concoction to try and justify thier perversion. Gay marriage is an abomination. Read the Bible. If you believe in God, then believe his word. Any justification for your perversion is a lie.
Now as far as saying something is GAY, it’s was humor, you over sensitive morons. Get over it. If you don’t like it, move to an Islamic country, see how you’re treated there.
you dare compare WOMEN to homos? Come on now. You silly gays. leave the rest of us alone.
————————————————————————-
In the movie, “The Other Guys”, the Mark Wallberg character states that riding in a Prius makes him feel like he just climbed into a vagina. There was no outcry about that line. Sometimes I think GLAAD is way to sensitive.
Kids aren’t dying, as you put it, because people use the term “gay” in a derogatory manner. They are dying because they are having difficulty dealing with their “gay” tendencies. Why? Because they know in their hearts that it is unnatural, and will only bring turmoil into their lives, as well as the lives of their family and friends.
Despite what all the gay-friendly researchers have tried to force down our throats (no pun intended), being gay is a lifestyle choice! Your cause has run its course, and nobody is buying the BS anymore.
NOT genius by any stretch, kinda childish and stupid humor first of all.
Second of all, this comment is ignorant.
And though we adults can see that Kevin James’ character is using this term in a light-hearted way (which only adds fuel to the fire, the fact that they throw this term out casually in an office – where then is this word taboo, church? mm), kids however will only want to simulate famous actors and it will further encourage them to keep this lexicon in their arsenal of insults. And have we learned nothing this month?
And gay is not a race? profound. I think what you are trying to say is that only racial slurs can be hurtful? And when you are every gay man living, you can speak for all of them who should and should not be complaining.
Finally, if this Ron Howard-Vince Vaughn movie represents REAL LIFE, then why is Kevin James married to Winona Ryder.
How does one simulate an actor? Get off your high horse and learn English.
Well… looks like you guys have this one under control. Happy commenting, I’m sure that it’ll go a long way to save lives, egos, and money.
List the Studies, please. And don’t say “monkey dung”. It gets me too hot. I can’t help it.
Actually Kevin James is married to someone hotter than Winona Ryder so you argument is invalid.
NOT genius by any stretch, kinda childish and stupid humor first of all.

Finally, if this Ron Howard-Vince Vaughn movie represents REAL LIFE, then why in the HELL is Kevin James married to Winona Ryder.
So are you saying fat people can’t marry someone who is skinny and pretty? Whose being hurtful now?
I am saying JEN that “Dilemma” is not the most realistic reflection upon real life. Any other off topic points you want to raise?
How is commenting on an idiotic statement that you made considered off topic?
You are correct, Gay is not a race. Neither is religion, or a person’s sex… but the filmmakers should at least be aware that these are subjects that may press some buttons for people. If they’re going to “go there,” then they better commit and really go for the jugular… and be hilarious while doing it. (See South Park or Family Guy).
I’ll concede that it’s not as offensive as it’s being made out to be, if you’ll concede that it’s hardly genius and funny. The only offensive thing here is that the joke failed to entertain.
Let’s examine the use of “gay” in context of how it is presented: the actor says “Electric cars are so gay.” What is meant by this? He’s saying that nobody wants an electric car because they are perceived as weak and uncool. I can see how the gay community thinks that is mean. It equates them with something nobody wants to be. So the statement is unkind, and that would be true if he had said “Electric cars are so tree-huggger” or “so French” or “so Snooki”.
But our day to day lives are filled with unkind language towards everyone… political parties, religious people, managers at work, the person who cuts you off in traffic. There are some words in the english language that should not be used to describe a group of people (e.g. the N word). “Gay” isn’t one of them. This is used in light humor in a movie, not in a villifying, hateful, “let’s go on a homosexual hunt” type of way. The film studio had the forethought to screen this line with homosexuals, who didn’t become outraged. This is a great example of how a minority of a minority group starts squaking and now we all think it’s going to result in mass gay teenage suicide.
Maybe its time we treat each other a little more kindly in word and in deed, and at the same time, become less reactive to random lines in a movie.
There is nothing lighthearted about using gay as a catch-all for negative, bad, wrong. That is not lighthearted. It’s offensive, and it implies something that is dangerous—that one cannot nor should not be gay. That’s not acceptable.
The fact you say “the N word should never be used to describe a group of people but using gay as an insult is fine” is the EXACT problem we are seeing here. People like you, DJ, rate gay/lesbian individuals BENEATH blacks. Beneath women. Beneath religion. And that’s the exact issue here. Gay/lesbian people don’t have the respect as human beings they DESERVE. And have EARNED by living in such a homophobic world.
These are human beings who bleed red as anyone else, DJ. This isn’t reactive. This is called seeing a term that is offensive made as a joke, and thus making gay people a joke in the process. People IDENTIFY as gay. These are PEOPLE being affected. It has nothing to do with anything but respect. Be respectful and don’t defend the usage of disrespectful phrases.
If the statement is unkind, which it is, how is it OK just because “everybody’s doing it” ? If the film makers really thought this was OK, why would they even bother to ask GLAAD? And by the way, GLAAD doesn’t speak for all homosexuals. That’s insulting in itself.
Long ago, the term “gay” meant happy and light-hearted. Somewhere along the line, the homosexual community co-opted that word and changed its meaning.
Now, another generation is taking that word back and redefining it. Get pissed all you want, but this ship has sailed. Ask anyone under 20 how this term is used amongst their social groups. It’s a done deal- no amount of GLAAD inflicted pc guilt is gonna roll this one back.
No, the adjective “gay” in this reference means effeminate and not masculine or macho. Where is the slur there?
Hello. When did we become a society where it is illegal/immoral/unethical/choose yours to OFFEND somebody?? Our founding fathers would be turning in their graves. Read some of the historical comments made in our own Congress 200 years ago.
The truth is that people decide to be offended in order to make a scene. You can call me whatever you like but if I know who I am and am strong in my convictions – so what? I’ll just write you off as the idiot I believe you are. If you are so easily offended by words, there must be something about your stance or being that you’re uncomfortable with.
That this society has chosen to grace this absurdity with the legal pretense of “hate speech” and “hate crimes” is absolutely obscene. The crime exists and whether you kill me because of the color of my shirt or because I’m gay/black/Jewish/you pick, I’m just as dead.
Wake up people. PC is destroying our country and our world.
I can’t believe Ron Howard caved on this. That’s so gay.
I’d much rather be gay than be a Wilbur Fangboner, you moron.
This post wins the award for clarity, brevity, and knee-slapping levity.
It’s not about caving. It’s about respect. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Try doing that. World will be a better place.
It’s not about respect, it’s about $$$.
Homosexuals have NO respect for those who don’t practice debauchery. Case in point, recall the homosexuals dressed in Nun drag and entering the catholic church there in SF, Ca. That goes on almost weekly. Where’s the respect, buddy? ZERO. ZIP. ZELCH.
Second of almost, ingesting fecal matter and spreading disease is not respectful to yourself or to others.
The LAST thing a homosexual needs to mention is the word ‘respect’…. what a joke.
No kidding! Ron is such a gaylord!
The whole issue is sooo totally gay!!
Right On!
“Gay is not a race” says it all. What does that even mean? Well, it’s clearly ridiculous. But the intent is obvious. Gay people aren’t black, their issues aren’t a REAL civil rights issue, they aren’t on the same level of black people, they are second class. That’s all that means. Then we have people like Jerry, who has posted a few times, basically saying gay people choose to be gay, and because being gay is wrong, they choose to be ridiculed and mocked for being gay. Which is the crux of the issue. The people, mostly self-identified conservatives on here, who defend the usage of this term, are ANTI-GAY.
Sexual attraction is not a choice. But that’s neither here nor there. Choice or not, gay/lesbian people have the RIGHT to be gay/lesbian WITHOUT ridicule or abuse. That’s THEIR freedom. A lot of these anti-gay bigots talk about them, their, I, me. But they don’t ever think about the person on the other side of the equation. IF homosexual sexual orientation were a choice, then those homosexual persons have the right to make that choice. It’s legal, and guess what, under the constitution, we all require equality. America is all about freedom, liberty, and the ability to be thyself WITHOUT discrimination. Why do many of you conservatives fight against these basic concepts, things America was built on? Not even that, these are things of which conservatism is based on.
So no, “ridiculing that choice” is NOT acceptable. Religion is a choice, and most know not to ridicule others’ for their beliefs. Same with sexual orientation. Verbal abuse, and a complete lack of basic human decency are NOT acceptable traits. And that’s why this term is an issue, is being highlighted, condemned and stigmatized. Because it is wrong, as wrong as anti-gay attitudes themselves.
The Trailer has been removed from being viewed. That tells me that little idiots are at work – the reader/viewer isn’t to know what you’re objecting to, nor is that person allowed a personal opinion. Ya’ you’ll honestly tell me what I need to know. Right…
…and don’t bore me. (your words- shithead)
“BEING GAY IS A CHOICE” uhmmm….. huh?
Oh, I see.
It is NOT a choice anymore than eye color
It is NOT a choice anymore than eye color
Hmmm, ever hear of contact lenses?
It’s not a matter of whether or not it’s a good thing, it’s a matter of, is that a phrase that the character would use? Clearly, the filmmakers thought so. The phraseology has been around since the 30′s, and people are only coming out about it now, because there’s a controversy. What you need to know, is that if this phrase goes away, another will take its place.
“LET’S REMEMBER BEING GAY IS A CHOICE”
You’re right. Gay people are naturally heterosexual but they choose a lifestyle that goes against their own natural desires to subject themselves daily to numerous forms of taunting, religious / political persecution, estrangement from family, inability to marry, discrimination in housing and employment, threats of physical violence or even death and then lie about their choice by insisting they were born that way.
No, it’s not…but movies are a form of art, and if a character is going to be portrayed as an immature, ignorant prick (or just immature, since most people I know who still use “gay” as an insult are in high school), then the dialogue should reflect that.
It’s art. Let it go.
Does it matter if its a good thing? Since when did Hollywood only do good things?
Comment removed.
(it was just too freakin’ gay, and we caved)
AMAZING. SO much for FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION— or is Howard the only weenie who believes that a pressure group representing approx 1% of the population gets to vet his film.
1% of people? Hahaha. Try more like 8%. And then of course, there are the people, like me, who aren’t gay but actually have RESPECT FOR ALL PEOPLE. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Seems you forgot that phrase.
You have freedom of expression. You can express yourself in certain ways, but there are also laws and unwritten codes we all abide by. You can say what you want, but there are consequences for those actions. If you can’t deal with those consequences, don’t do the action that causes them.
This has nothing to do with freedom of expression. NOTHING AT ALL. Freedom of expression specifically protects you from the government. It doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want without consequences.
Everyone knows Vince Vaughn is a guys guy. Did you see Swingers? Gay doesn’t always mean Homosexual. Lighten up Sissys. Sometimes things are just gay. Complaining about a movie trailer while unemployment is over 10% and the economy is in the crapper is ridiculous.
Tolerance is the ideology of people with no principles!
ra
“Gay” can only be used if it’s activism…
Travel back in time to before we made progress on Civil Rights, and saying “Sorry, but that’s the way 95% + of the population talks” would’ve been equally useful in justifying racial slurs.
Not only that, the trailer goes on to specifically say, not “gay” like homosexual. Many words have many meanings and choosing to be offended is a waste of time. There was a likely gay person in the film sitting in the room and she was not offended. Bad can mean good or bad, sweet can mean awesome or tasty, sick can mean puking or killer, killer can mean murderer or great….you are choosing to focus on the small s*** if that is all you have to complain about in life…and have you noticed most of the people complaining are NOT homosexual!? They seem to be trying to impress homosexuals.
What? You must not get out of your trailer park much.
This whole Dilemma is GAY!
Electric Cars are GAY! Don’t see a problem.. People are so offended these days about everything. What bothers me is all shitty movies that Hollywood puts out with their progressive ideology. This Looks like a great movie!!
Amen! Leftists are always crying something..Racist!Bigot!Sexist!Homophobe!Islamaphobe! Gah!People need to lighten up….Those of us who are of faith, are made fun of all the time…Only certain groups are “speical” Us Americans who believe in freedom and liberty and the individual rights are “Extreme”..” ‘Tollerance” seems to go only one way these days…
So you believe that electric cars are either male or female, and the male electric cars only want to be with other male electric cars, and the female electric cars only want to be with other female electric cars?
In light of the latest South Park episode, I’m thinking you must be a huge NASCAR fan.
People with no sense of humor is Gay…
On behalf of happy people everywhere who have lost the use of the adjective “gay” to describe joyfulness, I would just like to say that I have yet to meet any HOMOsexual that was “Gay!” Usually, they are moody and self absorbed and more often than not behave with a sense of entitlement normally reserved for a princess. (As displayed in the many comments of this post)
south park did it first.
If you’re going to quote the bright minds of South Park, please reference the episode about the motorcycle riders.
The term “gay” in the context used in the movie has zero to do with homosexuality. People use the word “gay” as an adjective to refer to something that is lame and it has nothing to do with homosexuality. Lighten up.
Lighten up? Lighten up to who they identify as being used as a term dignifying something as lame and bad. Lighten up about who they identify as being considered a joke?
No, Craig, why don’t you show some respect towards gay people and not use such an offensive term, a term you know offends. Why don’t you actually start caring about others and stop thinking about things in your own little box. It can have 1% or 100% to do with homosexuality, fact is, people identify as gay, and that word is being classified as something negative. It isn’t.
I agree the statement is true. Electric cars are gay, as in “the wave of the future.”
Notice how anti-gay conservatives consider showing respect towards LGBT citizens “progressive” and “leftist”. Like someone it’s political to not use anti-gay terms. Life is a giant political forum to these people. They are completely out of touch with the real world and the fact there are actually real people who are gay, and liberal, that are more than a political label.
Electric cars are happy. How did homosexual ever morph into “gay”? Who made the decision to hijack the word gay and make it mean homosexual? Seriously? I can see being offended if they said “homo”, but gay means happy. Look it up.
I do think we’ve gotten to damn oversensitive and I AM a homosexual! I even use the word retarded a lot. I’m so sick of the crazy crap we obsess over. everyone is offended by everything.
95% of the population talks like that? Huh? I think you meant 95% of teenage douchebags who wear Ed Hardy t-shirts and act like they’re on Jersey Shore.
Nah, pretty much 95% of everyone I know speaks that way (and I’m well into middle age).
Even 95% of my gay friends talk like that. Whether it’s right or not can be argued ’til the cows come home, but the truth is that that’s how people talk.
I think people are too easily offended these days over one line in a movie. I think people over-analyze that.
I understand that its a bad line. But take leave if you want to protest the trailer and not see the movie based on that one line instead of complaining about it because that is invading freedom of speech.
Teddy=People may use the term, but that does not make the term acceptable. It’s like saying everyone murders, so let’s allow murders to continue. No. It’s wrong and needs to be addressed, stigmatized and eliminated.
Andrew=Nothing being over-analyzed. Using gay as a negative term is implicitly saying gay is lame and wrong. That is not acceptable. Nothing about this is freedom of speech. They had and still have the freedom to use the term. But they recognize the error of their ways, and the pain the term causes, and have decided to eliminate it from the movie. That’s how freedom of speech works. For every action, there is a reaction.
Put yourself in a gay man’s shoes, Andrew, and you may be able to understand the offense the term causes.
The use of the word ‘gay’ in that context is simply saying the idea probably would be thought up by a homosexual. Like anal sex or ‘tea-bagging’ or fisting or ‘felching’ or ‘docking’ or playing ‘ookie cookie’. So there.
So sorry to hear that 95% of the people you associate with are idiots.
Try moving out of the trailer park.
So, I guess it’s okay to bash people who live in trailer parks?
Oh, Matt the Gay thinks it okay to bully lower income people who live in the south and mobile homes…What happens when the next trailer park kid reads this, Mattie? and then offs himself because you decided to humiliate his way of life??? PISS OFF…Gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay…sue me.
Right, it should have said “Electric cars are so trailer park”
Way to go Matt, show the world what a gay douchebag you are as well. I guess a little hate speech now and again is okay, if it’s aimed at trailer park people? Hypocrite.
Odds are you probably live in the south.
Might be a good explanation for your ignorance.
bashing southerners, i see. as someone who grew up in the south but is pro-gay marriage, and pro repealing DADT, i find that remark offensive. but you know what? i got over it in about half a second.
now, if an inbred, knuckledragging, yeehawing yokel like myself can show a sense of humor and perspective, maybe others can, too.
Eric, that is amazing!
You deserve some kind of reward for having met every single person in the south! And what a logical argument I might add, excellent inductive reasoning. Someone is ignorant, therefore they are from the south. Can’t you write a book or something, please, to guide all us ignorant southern folk, since you are so profoundly logical and “enlightened?”
I can only hope of course, this will not take too much of your time, as you are busy with your superior non-southern life, masterminding well-thought-out blanket terms.
Midwest– upper middle-class neighborhood.
And it must be okay to bash everyone from “the south”… hypocrites.
how do you spell hypocrite? G A Y
Eric,
You have NO IDEA how big a laugh your comment gave me. One would hope you’re being sarcastic in that smug, sanctimonious, superior way that Stephen Colbert and his ilk have perfected. However, sadly — okay, honestly, hilariously — I suspect you’re being perfectly sincere.
I mean, look at what you’ve said. You’re accusing someone of bigotry, and then you finish your argument with this witty flourish:
“Odds are you probably live in the south.
Might be a good explanation for your ignorance.”
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!!
Real brainiac, here.
Oh, and newsflash:
“Flyover” Country = Midwest
Meaning, it’s the part of the country that’s “flown over” when traveling between the coasts.
Mom, Dad – I have to tell you something. I’m south!
Of course, you are from the midwest, as you say upper middle class, so probably around haughty people who have money but lack class and respect towards others because they haven’t had to learn it. You are middle aged, and as we know that’s the age and older where people are generally anti-gay. So not surprising at all. The surprising thing is you don’t recognize why people who consider you horribly immature and ignorant.
@ Here in Flyover -
That’s strange and sad that you’re middle-aged and yet 95% of the people you know still use “gay” as a derogatory term. I hope you’re exaggerating. Everyone I know (including myself) stopped saying it after high school because, well, we grew up a bit. I haven’t heard it in normal conversation in a long time.
Quit acting like you speak for the flyover. There are some morons everywhere, you speak for yourself. Nobody I know talks like that AT ALL! See how easy that is to say? Only it happens to be true. Who knows where you’re from, but it’s from the stupid part of town.
Anybody else find the hostility toward and preoccupation of some people with gay guys very weird and creepy? It’s like they are obsessed for some reason. I’m just saying.
I agree…pretty much everyone talks like this. Or at least the dozens of different people I speak with everyday who are members of the general public.
No. You’re wrong. No one I know says that any more: it’s uncool. Only an older writer from Hollywood would think that it’s still in vogue as a phrase. It should never have been in the popular lexicon as an insult. To publicize it on film is wrong.
It may be wrong, It may be bad for Universal to include it. But really this borders on invasion on our right to free speech. It’s not hate speech necessarily since it does not incite people to start killing gays or beating them. It’s just a common saying that a lot of people say. I may be wrong, but it happens. I think if you want to protest the line, encourage others not to see the movie based on that specific line.
Your First Amendment right to free speech is infringed if and only if the government starts controlling what you can say.
The government has nothing to do with this.
Therefore, you need to take a class in constitutional law before you go spouting off any more foolish opinions.
There is a difference between government censorship (a bad thing) and self-censorship (also known as “having an internal filter”, this is a good thing).
“Free speech” means the government can’t put you in jail for expressing your views, as long as they aren’t meant to incite violence or to take away somebody else’s rights. However, if your “free speech” offends me or pisses me off, I have the right to express my “free speech” and let you know about. A movie company removing a line from a film because it offends members of a particular group — whether or not we agree the members of that group are there by choice or chance — is the business of the movie company. Remember reading about the “blacklisting” era of the 1950s, the government didn’t blacklist anybody nor order anybody to be jailed, just for their communist leanings. Some were jailed for purjury, however. It was the studios who did the blacklisting and wouldn’t hire certain individuals because they feared the public wouldn’t go to see the movies. There is nothing basically bad or evil about gay humor. I see it all the time on “Modern Family” and it can be funny. It is sad how so many in entertainment try so hard to be politically correct as to be worried about a potentially offensive joke about gays, race or even those of us why may be too fat or too skinny. Mel Brooks doesn’t know the meaning of “politically correct” or he wouldn’t have done “Blazing Saddles” or “The Producers.” Is “Springtime for Hitler” politically correct or a bunch of guys farting around a campfire? Don’t think so. But these films were funny. All those who may be gay, fat, skinny, black, white, male, female or whatever need to lighten up a little.
Charles=No-one should lighten up when it comes to having who they identify as being denigrated as something negative. Lightening up makes using the term permissible, and it shouldn’t be, because it causes harm, and is WRONG. It’s not funny, and it’s WRONG, to make a joke of an entire community or who that community identifies as. There is nothing funny about intentionally saying something that is implicit in stating gay=lame, bad, wrong. Being gay is not wrong, and no way should it be allowed without backlash that it is such.
Your First Amendment right to free speech is violated if and only if the government starts controlling what you can say.
The government has nothing to do with this.
Therefore, you need to take a class in constitutional law before you go spouting any more of your foolish opinions.
There is a difference between government censorship (a very bad thing) and self-censorship (also known as “having an internal filter”, this is a very good thing).
Andrew, you wouldn’t know the definition of free speech if it slapped you in the face.
It doesn’t even remotely invade on your freedom of speech. You can say “that’s so gay”, and guess what, we are in 2010. People are standing up and saying NO, that is offensive and wrong. Doesn’t mean you CANNOT say it, but for every action, there is a reaction. You can use the term but also you need to take the accountability with using phrases such as this.
High school kids still use it. It is ridiculous to outlaw words. We all have to take some kind of verbal abuse and it makes us stronger.
So you are the authority on cool now. I dont use it because its cool. I say it because ive said it since i was a child. Im about 28 years old, so i would say its still said fairly often.
Sad, you admit you haven’t grown up and are still completely immature at almost 30 years old. Even sadder that you make excuses for that.
everybody I know uses the word Gay to describe Flamboyant, Weak, Nerdy, etc. Things, situations or people. that doesn’t mean I am going to burn one at the stake. I personally know Ex-Homosexuals, and Ex-Heterosexuals… I also know Bi-Sexuals. So all in all, I believe the way a persons sexuality is treated is a choice,if some guy gets grossed out about female organs, let him be gay!
That’s funny Joshua, same with me, I also regularly call people “stupidhead” and “Pizza Face” and complain about cooties.
You’re a grown up now. You sound like an idiot when you call something “gay.”
See all this chatter and awareness and controversy below..?
THAT’S why Universal put the scene in the trailer!
Otherwise … all “you people” would not have built enough buzz in the media for the company to get free advertising from!
From the bottom of our publicity stunt eager hearts … UNIVERSAL THANKS YOU!
Exactly – I mean let’s face it, the movie probably will suck, Vince Vaughn is in it after all.
May as well stoke a fire to get publicity some other way. And inflaming two frequently warring factions is a great way to do it when you’re selling a shit product.
Successful, established, rich gay men in an extremely liberal city are okay with the joke but don’t get why it would perpetuate problems for struggling, gay teens in middle america? ‘out of touch’ shouldnt be the problem in marketing.
What is very sad is that the splended adjective of “GAY” was hijacked many years ago by a group of people who collectively are as far removed from the true meaning as they can possibly be. Sad Pathetic Bitter Angry……. I guess one could use any one of these and it would mean the same thing.
including the two gay co-presidents of marketing at Universal? and the uber-liberal chariman of the film group? and the closeted lead of the movie? self-hatred is sad and keeps negativity alive in the world.
Correct. You cant get angry when everybody outside of gay lobbyists uses it in their language.
I’ve heard the term about 5-6 times in my life. So, I don’t know who “everyone” is. Secondly, one sure can get angry this term is being widely used, it’s an OFFENSIVE TERM, whether 1 or 100000 use it, it’s wrong. Lastly, gay lobbyists? Typical anti-gay conservative. The funny thing about people like you is, you ask for respect, but don’t give any. If you won’t show the RESPECT towards LGBT citizens to simply not use a term that you know they consider offensive, then don’t wonder why they don’t give you respect.
The irony is that you haven’t shown respect to a single person on this board. You’ve been tossing off insults and personal attacks to posters on this board and to just about everyone else — Southerners, Midwesterners, teenagers, old people, people who like NASCAR.
Your demands for civility would probably be better received if you weren’t so rude and belligerent.
And I don’t know where you live, but I have routinely heard “gay” used as a mild pejorative. You know what? It used to mean happy and queer used to mean odd. Y’all appropriate words that never applied to sexuality and now no one can use them. Tough knocks; words and meanings change. “Gay” in this context doesn’t have to do with homosexual any more than it has to do with happy.
Don’t be sorry about reality!
No-one is sorry. It’s about changing reality for the better. That’s what is being done here.
I’m gay and I think electric cars are cool and are a real progressive thing for the future of our planet…..SO, go ahead and call them gay – you are right…us and the cars….
If they left that comment in they would be doing more harm than good. Getting a few laughs is not worth offending a large number of people as well as making it harder for young gay kids to be themselves. Bigotry is never amusing and that phrase is a bigoted thing to say, even if 95% of people say it. That “statistic” doesn’t justify demeaning a minority for a laugh. Back in the day Hollywood used to do these things all the time with Blacks and Chinese and a number of other minorities. It wasn’t right then and it’s not okay now. If the writers of this movie have to rely on bigoted sayings for a laugh, then the movie probably isn’t that funny to begin with.
I guess thats where you live.. except for children in jr high I never hear that
This debate is gay, not in a my parents are chaperoning the dance gay, but homosexual gay.
Gay is a choice. No study has ever proven otherwise.
Its so Gay to think people don’t talk that way.
Gay people commit suicide at a higher rate than heterosexuals. For instance; if you put a homo on YouTube it will make them kill them self. That’s gay. People make fun of heterosexuals all the time and embarrass them, but they do not jump off a bridge for it.
To think its worse to make fun of gays than straights is gay.
“I think we need to really focus on what language we’re using. . .”
Anderson Cooper: Does that mean you’re going to stop calling people with whom you disagree names like “teabaggers”?
Right on!!!!!
(thumbs up)
Dittos!!
Oh my God. What a great comment. Anti-gay liberals who toss around terms like “teabaggers” when talking about the Tea Party movement are showing their stupidity. Gays who don’t trust some conservatives because of fears conservatives want to control what happen in their bedrooms need to look closer at the liberals/progressives of today who want to control what happens in every other room in the house.
From my understanding, “teabaggers” was originally used by the Tea Party movement itself. Progressives and liberals thought it was funny, so they started using it. The Tea Party movement–slow to realize the sexual connotation of the phrase–then ditched the term.
Well your understanding is wrong. Anderson Cooper said it first and if there is anyone who would be an expert on “teabagging” it’s AC.
You understand wrong. If somebody in the Tea Party movement accidently used that term, he or she was no doubt informed that the term is an anti-gay offensive one and stopped. When was the last time you heard a Tea Party supporter use the term as opposed to some of the liberal/progressive movement where it is heard all the time?
Citation please.
nope, Your understanding is wrong Boyd. Thank you, play again
When I was a kid to ridicule something as “gay” meant lame, spastic, NOT homosexual. Nor did anyone imply that to be homosexual was to be lame or spastic. Political correctness is creating offense where none was originally. Now we all have gay bashers who will use any excuse to insult a group they don’t like, but idiots who take offense at ANYTHING are giving those types of hater POWER. It’s a stupid argument. Let it go!
It’s offensive because people identify as gay. It’s not political correctness. It’s called respect. Gay is who PEOPLE ARE. This isn’t about things, this isn’t about actions. This is about PEOPLE as HUMAN BEINGS having WHO THEY ARE IDENTIFIED AND REPRESENT, being used as a term indicating something lame and negative. Put yourself in a gay mans’ shoes for a second, and try to realize why they are saying what they are saying.
And words, they have power, because guess what? Our words are the one constant that people have to express their beliefs, their thoughts, their personalities, their likes and dislikes. Words are the one thing we have in that department. You can’t read someones’ mind and see what they think. Words ALWAYS have had power, and always will, we are HUMAN BEINGS with feelings, not robots. And that’s another issue needing to be addressed, people have become cold and thoughtless, instead we need to respect and listen to what others are saying, why what is being said is offensive, and make a change.
Why put myself in a gay man’s shoes? I live in a Southerner’s shoes, and we’re kind of accustomed to insults from people like you (and I mean liberals and Northerners, not gays). All the time.
D’oh! Sorry, fb. I appreciate your passion, but Jonzie is right. This is all about political correctness – giving ‘victims’ special consideration because they are so sad and need social hugs. If you want to be homosexual or gay or whatever you prefer to be called, go for it. But don’t be a victim and feel sorry for yourself and whatever group you choose to identify yourself with. You’re 100% equal with everyone else on the planet, so you don’t need special rules, special consideration, or special laws. Be happy being who you are and let others be who they are. That’s what respect is all about.
You are kidding me right? Somebody needs a thicker skin and a little common sense! There is nothing offensive or hurtful in that saying. But, some people have to much time on their hands or just have have to bitch about something!
Actually no, um I’ve spent my life in New York City and Richmond VA. Among the biggest city in the world, one of the bigger Southern cities in the country. I’ve heard that phrase maybe 5-6 times in my life. I don’t know the type of lower-class individuals who use such terms, but guess what, the fact many people DO use this term is WRONG, and that’s exactly what is being said. It is wrong, and needs to be stamped out, and instead replaced with respect, decency and intelligence.
Every single one of your posts that I have had the pleasure of reading have been drenched in the sweetest form of irony, and that is funnier than the use of the term gay.
No kidding! Hey, flyboy quit being so gay!!
Is Bi-sexuality a choice? I’m confused
Wow, there are so many clueless people out there. Pedophiles can’t change either, where is the defense of them? I say all of you who claim scientific evidence for homosexuality should give us the links. Stop telling us the evidence is there, and show us. Then, using that defense, explain why if not being able to change is the argument why pedophiles are not protected either? How can we discriminate against them if they were born that way, and cannot change?
I agree. Everyone justs needs to stop being so freaking Jewish.
This really is rediculus. Anyone running around claiming being homosexual is a choice needs to be able to back them up other than failed fruit fly studies and horrendously sad twin studies that not only disprove them but actually give credence to the other side. Face facts. Homosexuality has never EVER been proven to be anything more than an alternative lifestyle. If we were to give into this nonsense without proof we would have to explore the claims of pedos or polygamy claiming their “condition” is genetic. So cut the bs. You don’t have the proof. Live with that until you can get it. Until then, its not a race or genetic. And please for the love of God stop pretending you can relate it to civil rights. You can’t. Race and gender ARE genetic and proven to be so.
One more thing, if its not a choice as some of you claim why is the sexual reaction in homosexuals exactly the same as it is in non homosexuals? When gay men stop producing sperm or women stop preparing for procreation when sexually stimulated, come back and claim you need “rights”
It’s my choice as a man to walk down the street in a dress. There is no law or should there be that says you can’t laugh, point and snicker or say something.
Come on people, this is getting stupid.
If you can’t be comfortable being and doing what you do without worrying if someone calls you a name or laughs or isn’t ‘nice’ then you need some help.
Remember the saying ‘Sticks and stones’??? Also you are not what I say you are. Get it? I don’t define you. So grow a set and one for your friend and lets disco!!
95% of the population? Wow! I love phony idiotic statistics! What a moronic post.
The victim in all of this is honest “Story telling”. You couldnt even make a film like “Chariots of Fire” anymore, for example.
this is getting ridiculous. Now we can’t laugh at ourselves!!! No one pressured Will Farrell not to make the George BUsh movie (which was intended to make a fool out of the president)Sorry, but heterosexual men say that phrase sometimes…deal with it and LAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know, at one point 95% of the population used to use the n-word too, and have separate bathrooms and drinking fountains.
F you. Sorry, that’s the way I talk and 100 % of the population knows what that means
To the many who say that “sexual orientation is not a choice” must then accept pedophiles and zoophiles, for example, as people who were just born that way. Don’t arrest them then and let them be accepted for their lifestyle as well. However for those of us that understand demon-possession and unnatural order, do not punish us for living our lifestyle as well. We are only acting out how we were born too – born again. If we have to tolerate you, then you have to tolerate us too.
Agreed bro.
Fact is “homosexuals” have many derogatory words for breeder Christian types that would not be censored under the circumstances. When did we become such a nation of thin skinned whiners so easily offended? Political correctness is the refuge of the weak. People will never worship at someones feet because of a sexual orientation. Let’s get into living life and enjoy a silly movie or stay away because it is offensive. Either way get over this false offense.
……and crap food is what 95% percent of people eat.
majority rules even in the case of stupidity??????
Clearly, it’s critical for the low self-esteem of straight men to have their silly gay jokes, so don’t take them away or ask them to rethink.
The funny thing about the line is not the line itself, but Vince Vaughn saying it. He’s so unaware how foolish he looks.
Uni are full of s***
The trailed is massively offensive. Shame on Vince Vaughan, Ron Howard and especially the closeted Queen Latifah.
Oh and the movie looks appalling – but what else would you expect from Howard – the king of bland…
I am sure you have never done anything offensive in your life…and by that I mean taking into account every other viewpoint in the entire world. People can be offended by anything and unless you sit in your room doing nothing…cause even reading the bible could be considered offensive to some, you are offending someone.
also…just cause you do not like his particular brand of humor, doesn’t mean Howard is bad at what he does. Arrested Development can be called lots of things but I don’t think “Bland” is one of them.
Yep, I’m so glad that Ron Howard created and wrote Arrested Development.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Hurwitz
Ron Howard did not direct Arrested Developement. He was an executive producer and uncredited narrarator
Arrested Development? Try looking up Mitchell Hurwitz on Wikipedia or IMDB. He’s why it can’t be called bland.
Actually I do think Arrested Development is very over-rated.
Bland is the wrong word – more like ‘thinks it’s a lot cleverer than it really is’. And smug.
If you don’t like the jokes, stay out of the movie theatre when the movie that offends you is playing. Al Gore was given a Nobel Prize for the lies he told in his movie “Inconvenient Truth.” What has caused more damage to our society, a tasteless gay joke or the lies of Al Gore?
This has stressed me out. I think I’ll go and smoke a fag.
Bland?…are you kidding me? “Splash”, “Cocoon”, “Backdraft”, “Apollo 13″, The “Da Vinci Code”…Ron Howard movies have been nominated for 39 Academy awards and have won 9 Oscars. I don’t think you even know what the term “bland” means.
That is pretty funny, what you said. Other than “Splash”, you just named 4 of the blandest (and worst) films to come out in the past 30 years.
Ron Howard is a highly commercial director, but his movies, for the most part, suck.
And you’re equating Oscars with objective quality?
Didn’t you see “Crash”, one of the worst films of the past 50 years?
@ Jo-jo
You’re jo-joking, right?
Man – I dread to think what your Top 10 movies list looks like…!
It goes to show you how out of touch and bigoted the people running the Hollywood are. I don’t blame Queen Latifah, she is an actor and her sexuality is her business. I respect her privacy and her choice. I have no respect for the people who made the trailer and decided that this is how we will sell our film. They are the ones that need to be replaced.
Kind of undercuts your “king of bland” statement when people (including yourself) are heatedly debating a scene from his movie, no?
That’s right, keep bitching and moaning at little off-hand insults. That’ll convince everyone that homosexuals don’t deserve the stereotype that they are lisping, limp-wristed, nancy-boy weaklings who prance around sodomizing each other. And the petty little slap at Ron Howard is a gratuitous bit of cattiness that really rounds it all out nicely.
Actually, the people who think that either are homophobic or don’t know gay people and are ignorant. I’m not gay and no gay person I know acts like this. In fact, the gay community isn’t bitching or moaning. They are demanding and expecting respect and decency. If you don’t give it to them, guess what, there are consequences.
But hey, have fun justifying your homophobia. Must be a great life to live.
Lily=I love it when people bring religion into the situation. No, I don’t know many people who are offended by someone reading the Bible. Atheists just don’t believe in God. Muslims believe in the Koran. Jews the Torah. But that doesn’t mean they are OFFENDED by the Bible, unless they are EXTREMISTS.
In this case, this isn’t doing something in private in accord to your chosen beliefs. This is who people are as human beings having who they identify as publicly denigrated. And that’s what makes it offensive, and why steps are being made to stigmatize the term.
Charles=Does Al Gore have anything to do with this? Um, no, he doesn’t. And no, it’s not good enough to just “stay out of the theater.” It’s not good enough when a kid who is in the closet with his sexuality hears a A-list movie star calling gay a bad thing. And people laughing at it. And effectively laughing at him. It’s NOT good enough, the term is OFFENSIVE, and as you say, tasteless. Which is exactly why it needs to be stamped down and stamped out.
Yes I don’t agree with using the word “gay” in the context to call something bad or stupid or not cool as its used in the trailer but then again like some have pointed out it’s how Americans talk so it would be a contrivance to remove that line from the movie just on that basis. It’s not a movie i’d see a million years but does a movie perpetuate any form of bullying, yes. But good parenting should balance that effect out.
If you know it’s wrong and creates a culture of bullying, and this is something seen by millions publicly, then that is something, for the good of those gay kids being bullied and picked on, that needs to be eradicated from movies and from society. It’s not enough to just say “good parenting will fix that.” No, it’s about addressing and ending the problem.
I saw that trailer and cringed when that was said. A simple rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t say “That’s so Black”, “That’s so Muslim” or “That’s so Jew”, then don’t say “That’s so Gay”.
Disagree with your comparisons. Homosexuality is not a race nor a religion.
@nyguy You’re obviously an oversensitive homo, the kind that would likely snuff yourself when you get your wittle feewings hurt.
Good thing you’re gay because no self-respecting woman would be caught dead with a wuse like you. Awe, did I offend you? Booooo hoooo hoooo.
All of you hyper-sesitive, politically correct douche’s who don’t keep score at your little gay boy’s soccer games and want to change the word manhole to personhole because it’s male-centric are shining examples of what’s wrong with this country.
If WWII broke out today we’d lose because it would be racist to single out Japanese as our enemy. Instead of building weapons to defender ourselves we’d be wasting time making sure that all the defense contracts went to companies that met diversity requirements. Argh!!!
By the way, language is constantly evolving and I did not hear any happy people complaining when the term gay came to mean men who like to blow chunky, so STFU!
That’s a great way to put it. It’s not a personal thing to me but still irritating for the reason you state. People who say it point out to me they’re people I’d rather not spend my time with like the people who spewed epithets about black people constantly when I was a kid. People these days seem to think civil rights and decency only apply to those they approve of just like in those days. Granted a fictional show depicts how a character really is and he might be a moron but who wants to watch a show about a moron? Morons I guess.
gay has had many different usages and definitions in the past – totally different.
doesnt work as those are racial slurs, being “GAY” is not a race, its a choice
Hey, ignorant tool:
Being gay is not a choice. People who say it’s a choice reveal themselves to be uneducated, uninformed, and basically clueless.
Get it through your thick, cretinous head.
PEOPLE DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE GAY.
One day, hopefully you will learn this. Maybe it will be when your own child comes out. And I hope you’ll be less of a douchebag when that happens.
Just like being straight is a choice, one I’m sure you make every day. You get up and think, “Should I be sexually attracted to men or women today?” And then choose accordingly. I mean, really, who *wouldn’t* want to choose to be gay? It’s soooo easy and everyone is so incredibly warm and kind to all those who are homosexual. I’m sure the writers, producers, director, and actor all meant it as a compliment.
Nope, not necessary. Straight is the ‘natural’ way. Males have penises and females have vaginas – it’s pretty obvious how things are supposed to work. This is not a decision. Deviation requires the decision.
HEY ZOE. You get up and think, “Should I be sexually attracted to men or women today?” And then choose accordingly. I mean, really, who *wouldn’t* want to choose to be gay. aren’t thos people called Bisexuals in the LBGT community?
Rather than write yet another email stating that there is absolutely zero scientific evidence that sexual orientation is elective, let me simply ask you, Met7Az, to provide the scientific support for your statement. I can wait.
Oh, tell me about it. I remember when I was 15, sitting in church and hearing how homosexual attraction was an abomination in the eyes of God, and I thought, “Well that sounds like fun!” Gay ever since.
What’s a choice got to do with insulting and demeaning someone?
Up until 1973, Homosexuality was in the DSM…a psychological disorder in need of treatment. It’s like being Depressed, BiPolar, Schizophrenic, etc. When the Psychological community which determines such things decided to “come out of the closet,” they had to make themselves legitimate, so dropped it from the diagnosis and statistical manual. “Voila” a choice.
And? What has this got to do with demeaning and denigrating people because of who or what they are?
Do you do the same with one-legged men, bi-polar adults, or Republicans?
You are correct!
You’ve never seen or heard a good and funny joke about African-Americans, Jews, Latinos or gays before? What planet from which did you come? Ever here of Mel Brooks or Richard Prior? They, along with Gene Wilding and others wrote “Blazing Saddles” and “The Producers.” Don’t like racial or ethnic humor or characters? Ever wonder what was the ethnic background of Fagin in “Oliver Twist.” Could he have been a… Jew??? Get a life and don’t believe that everybody is as full of hate as you seem to be. As Judy Garland once sang… “Forget your troubles, get happy.” Oops, was that gay humor??
Hrrmmm, have wondered about the Gay religion and maybe you could explain the tenents of it. And I have heard people say “That is very christian of you” so maybe if the tenents and beliefs of gayianity are explained, then saying “That is very gay of you” might be a compliment. Just wondering.
What you don’t seem to understand is no one would ever say “that’s so Jew” or “that’s so Muslim,” yet someone saying “that’s so gay” is very common. Is that a good thing? Maybe not, but it happens to be a phrase that’s very common in our vernacular. “Gay,” by the way, is not used as a synonym for bad or lame, it’s used as a synonym for girly or feminine, and a lot of gay men happen to display those characteristics.
Why weren’t people pissed off when the gay guy in Mean Girls was called “too gay to function?” Isn’t that a case of gay being used to describe something effeminate?
I totally agree. I only use “That’s so Muslim” when I’m talking about dynamite-strapped, burka-clad felafel trucks, I only use “That’s so Jew” when I am talking about hook-nosed money merchants with Uzis, and I only use “That’s so black” when I’m talking about basketball or stealing shit.
Context, people!
BTW, context is totally gay!
Hey, I’ve got an idea! Let’s substitute ‘that’s so gay’ for ‘that’s so queer’! See? Much better!!
Political correctness is SO FREAKIN’ GAY!!
Do we honestly think striking the word GAY from a few movie trailers is going to stop gay kids from being bullied? If you do, you’re GAY!
See that thing in the mirror it is part of the problem.
What race and religion and sexual orientation are you jessr15?
No, removing the word from movies will not stop kids from bullying in the way that removing cigarettes from movies wont help help stop them from smoking, but . . . it’ll HELP won’t it?
i’m not gay…my boyfriend is. electric cars are pretty gay.
Home run!
Congratulations. You demonstrate the sort of sensitivity exactly like the kind of person who would bully a kid others perceive as being gay. Well done.
You’re wrong. I’m exactly the person who WOULD NEVER bully someone perceived as, or who was, gay. Honestly, it would be… such a GAY thing to do. (of course, using the word “gay” as bad, not as homosexual).
What the hell ever happened to the good old days when we could talk to each other??? Ever heard this little ditty?:
“Sticks & stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
Quentin Tarantino got it right the first time when he said that a word like “N*gger” should be shouted from the rooftops until it loses its power. I agree.
What I find interesting is in “The Hangover” Bradley Coopers character said something along the lines of “dont text me, its gay” but nobody ever said a thing about that.
Whether or not Universal showed this to Gay audienceces really doesnt matter, Anderson Cooper is a drama king, he takes tiny tiny stories and blows them waaaaaay out of proportion. He said that not only to get publicity for himself, but to also appeal to Ellen and her audience.
He doesnt give a damn, he just wants to be a household name.
Ron Howard isnt bland, he just needs to advertise his pictures more, Frost/Nixon was a damn good picture. Vaughn is the disgusting pig that nobody can stand anymore. (he literally looks like a pig- and not a cute one at that)
I suppose thats why the handsome Bradley Cooper can say “thats gay” without a single criticism.
I love Hollywood.
The main difference between the joke in “Hangover” and this one, is that Bradley Cooper’s line was actually funny. And it at least had a context–from what I’ve seen in my own (gay) life, gay men do tend to text a lot more than straight men. And also, Bradley Cooper’s character is meant to be an ass (he steals money from his class right at the beginning). Plus Bradley Cooper is always an ass, it goes without saying. Oh and the joke didn’t kick off the marketing campaign for the entire movie! The Dilemma literally takes the word gay and makes it the entire joke, without its use the comment is as flavorless as I’m sure the rest of the movie is. It’s just lazy writing.
Todd Phillips loves to use the gay joke. First big laugh line in OLD SCHOOL is when Luke Wilson is trying to leave in a cab, and his seatbelt doesn’t work.
Luke Wilson: I’m sorry, your seatbelt seams to be broken. What do you recommend I do?
Taxi Driver: I recommend you stop being such a faggot!
Agreed with Josh. Additionally, context is crucial because The Hangover’s comedy is racy in every direction (“They give out rings at the holocaust?”) whereas the only comedy I see in the Dilemma is fat guy physical humor- so a politically incorrect joke here stands out like a pedofile at the playground.
What prompted the controversy this time was the fact that someone killed himself after being outed as a “prank,” and then this trailer hits that starts out with a conversation making the word “gay” a bad thing. How hurtful or accepted it is to call something “gay” should be discussed, but the particular loudness of this discussion is more a matter of timing than anything.
two of the funniest movies i have ever seen – “slapshot” and “the bad news bears” (the original) – are so unbelievably offensive that it almost defies description. now, i don’t know how much controversy they caused when they were released as i saw BNB in the theaters when i was seven and Slapshot on vhs some time later, but they are regularly run on tv now. and no one protests. could it be the context? if so, then i still don’t see why this trailer is being vilified. vaughn, after all, made his name starring in fratboy comedies. this image follows him in whatever role he plays. this line, even if he’s playing a slightly different character this time (which by the looks of the trailer, he isn’t), doesn’t seem incongruent with that image.
in light of the bullying and the tragedies that have been occurring lately, i can understand some of the concern. but i don’t think it’s justified here.
That’s just how people talk. I personally don’t, but when I hear it, I’m not surprised or offended because very rarely does it have anything to do with homosexuals.
Every couple of months a story like this hits where someone on a reality show calls someone a f*g or a South Park kid says something’s gay, and GLAAD and the media in general gets all upset, while everyone else wonders why it’s such a big deal. This is what people are talking about when they say Hollywood is out of touch. If you’re going for some sort of realism in your movie, why is it such a big deal?
So, basically, they are cutting the best line from the trailer thanks to the closeted Anderson Cooper? Great.
that made my morning!
…he’s openly gay.
id that was the best line, save yourself 12 bucks. moron
If THAT’s the best line from the trailer, then Ron Meyer’s days at the studio really ARE numbered.
That’s the best line from the trailer??
Sad.
Since when is Anderson Cooper closeted?
What is really missing in much of this conversation is the reality that bullying anyone for anything is wrong, so terribly wrong and evil, too. It is also sad that the media seems to focus on a few young people who were bullied about being gay before killing themselves, when so many people are bullied every day for being fat, ugly, acne-filled faces or for just being different than the bully or pack of bullies who are focusing their twisted evil personalities upon someone else.
The real facts are that the vast, vast majority of American citizens really don’t give a damn if you are gay or not, if it is a choice or a not or whatever, so long as the individual practices a behavior that does not offensive. I don’t want to see two guys, two gals or a guy and a gal sucking tongues in front of me at a movie theater, a restaurant or a baseball game. If they want to behave that way, go find a room.
I don’t care if you are gay, white, black, fat, skinny, ugly, beautiful, from Italy, Mexico or Ireland… or even Cleveland. Act like an adult when around other adults and you are OK with me. I would be just as pissed if a gay woman or a straight male came on to my wife. If you are an entertainer and are performing, if I consider you funny, I will laugh WITH you, not AT you. I would hope that as an entertainer that would be your goal.
I remember seeing “Blazing Saddles” for the first time. Sitting in the row in front of us were several black guys. When the film started, focusing on a bunch of black railroad workers, there were some strong lines, written by Richard Prior by the way, in which a white guy calls for the black railroad workers to sing a n—er work song. I saw the black guys in front of me look at eachother in a “what is this” kind of moment. Then, almost immediately, they got the joke and they, along with everybody else in the theater, roared throughout the movie at all the politically incorrect jokes which were a signiture of Mel Brooks movies. I’m sure more than one Jew at first took offense to Springtime for Hitler in “The Producers” too, but after a second, they got the joke, too.
Suicide is one of the greatest acts of cowardice a person can commit. The gay college student didn’t jump off the George Washington Bridge because he was gay, it was because he was weak and had emotional problems. He didn’t have those problems because he was gay, however. I don’t think his cowardess had anything to do with his being gay. He had plenty of personal problems, but anyone who thinks he killed himself because he was gay is gay-bashing themselves. The vast, vast majority of gays would have reacted much, much differently to the bullying than this poor creature. Would the gays who have been posting on this site have killed themselves because of the stupid, actions of someone else. I think not. Most would have laughed it off or ignored it and a few would have kicked a little ass. Remember that a bully is in reality a coward who can only feel better about him or herself by putting someone else down. Get in their fact and they will be exposed for the wimps they really are.
this country needs to toughen up………….WORDS DO NOT HURT
You’re a complete dolt devoid of any original thought. How’d that feel? Good?
@truthman: “You’re a complete dolt devoid of any original thought. How’d that feel? Good?”
Since when is anyone required to only use their God-given powers of speech to make others feel good?
You smack of the entitlement generation that graduated from high school or college only to be knocked on your butt by the cold harsh realities of the real world. That’s right, in the real world people keep score: it’s how you get promotions and raises. In the real world you have to show up to work ON TIME. You don’t get a trophy just for showing up at all!
And in the real world, people speak candidly when they use criticism either constructively or otherwise. It’s how we improve and excel. If you tell someone they are devoid of original thought and they have some sense, they’ll work on conjuring up something unique. By the way, there is nothing original about what you said, so please work on that and resubmit.
One day you and the rest of your ilk will realize that not every adjective that comes out of a person’s mouth is the single word, “Amazing.”
How’s that new restaurant?
Oh, it’s amaaaaaazing!
How’s that new Jonas Brothers’ song?
Oh, it’s amaaazing?
How amazing does it feel to say amazing all the time?
For it to hurt my feelings i would actually have to care what you think
and and and you’re a poopyhead. How does that feel?
Okay, you two! Don’t make me come over there!!
Based on all of this “defending of the right to speech”, I come to the conclusion that males in the entertainment industry are scared of being labeled gay, so they doth protesteh way too much. Goes for all of you. Actors, writers, directors, off screen or on.
I feel perfectly fine. your free to call me whatever you want
You must be super human. Congrats. Maybe 13 year olds don’t yet have your resolve. But you probably don’t consider how other people may feel so long as you are right. Dolt.
“We showed the trailer to…gay executives here and gays in our marketing department and no one was offended.”
Well sure, why would they be? What would they have to lose in speaking up?
I’m sure that if I had been in that meeting, I would’ve had no trouble at all standing up and saying, “Frankly, I’m deeply offended at what Ron Howard and Vince Vaughn did. What these two major talents did was just reprehensible.”
I would’ve felt completely comfortable saying that, because I’m sure that my bosses would’ve replied, “Thank you so much for that input. It’s very valuable to us. And I hope you know that it will be held in the strictest confidence and that it will in NO WAY hurt you or your career with us.”
Yeah. That’s definitely how it would go down.
Im deeply offended, oh boo hoo. Im offended that someone spoke in a way I didnt like. If you would stop pushing the fag, wang sucking agenda on people that dont give a crap and actually like vagina then we wouldnt have a problem in the first place. Keep it to yourselves. I dont care if you are gay and proud. Im straight and proud but im not running around with giant signs saying I love puss. Bunch of morons….
……really? I mean how ignorant are we willing to get here? Homosexuals are a part of society, get used to it. Words are deeply powerful and using the media to further popularize a derogatory slang term is a step in the wrong direction
all the Bruces need to take responsibility for their actions and how they are influencing the suicide rate.
Keep that off this blog, you fucking disgusting tool.
Look everyone, someone named “stop hate” is full of hatred! Irony, thy name is gay.
If I call you the n-word or the f-word would that be okay?
Wow, “Bruce”, who exactly are you trying to convince there?
“We showed the trailer to…gay executives here and gays in our marketing department and no one was offended.”
That some insipid Uni flack would even utter those words proves how clueless they are. Studios are run practically like high schools themselves. If it is even true that they asked gay executives and gays in the marketing department, there is no way that they would do this. Sticking your neck out like this is a sure way to be ostracized, have people comment behind your back how sensitive you are, and suffer career suicide.
I’ve seen it happen to people and it’s not pretty.
Fine line to walk here … An appropriate comment? No, but are we really dropping the censorship hammer on this? They shouldn’t have put it in the trailer … this was an obvious response.
In the Anglosphere, this connotation, among younger speakers, has a derisive meaning equivalent to rubbish or stupid (as in “That’s so gay.”). In this use the word does not mean “homosexual”, so it can be used, for example, to refer to an inanimate object or abstract concept of which one disapproves.
Why did homosexuals adopt the word “gay” to describe themselves?
It’s gay that people are getting all upset that somebody called something gay as an insult.
No one I know speaks like that.
It is to steal the stolen.
The misappropriation of the word “gay” was the greatest act of grammatical piracy of the 20th century.
I’m usually gay and I’m definitely not a homosexual.
It’s reactions like this that are making me more conservative by the minute. Do we have to be constantly offended by everything? Seriously, we are a nation of babies. I’m Mexican and I could really care less if Adam Corolla or Vince Vaughn or any other comic or movie makes a Hispanic joke or comment. In an industry where you are constantly told that you need to have a thick skin to survive, everyone walks around with flesh made of rice paper. Oops. Sorry if I offended any Asians.
..And that’s what we’re trying to change. Its not right to use the word gay with a negative connotation. Let’s try to evolve.
All right, Michele — you ‘n’ me will try to evolve. But let’s be honest about how those inferior, unevolved people are: they say electric cars are “gay.”
You are so gay.
If that is your logic, then you must also apply that same logic across the board: thereby, it is not right to use the words God, Jesus, Bible, conservative, Christian, male, straight, moral, etc. with negative connotations, as that would be intolerant and de-evolved regardless of your personal beliefs!
Logic must be consistent and universally applied – or else it is not logic – rather just a personal capricious judgment call; and, therefore, should not be (and cannot be) expected from or forced onto others in society.
I would so love to evolve. I would love to learn to walk upright as my knuckles are beginning to chafe. So I implore to you have patience and tell me why it is wrong to use the term gay with a negative connotation. Is it because it offends some people? Is it because hurts some peoples’ feelings? If that is the case, then using any identity terms with a negative connotation is bad. It is my humble opinion that this approach would greatly undermine the modern expression of humor and cause more strife……..
Oh screw it…SHUDDUP you whiney, crying, little baby!
-From the Ravings of the Psychomancer
Really? This is gay that anyone is complaining about this. Grow a pair and shit up
This story is so gay.
Sorry meant to say shut up. Don’t want to offend anyone…… hahahahahahaha
40 year old virgin.
You know how I know you’re gay? How many of these did we hear
in the movie and heard nothing.
You know how I know you’re gay. YOu complain about using the term gay in the trailer.
Being upset over something so benign is GAY.
Pretty soon every word in the English language will have to be outlawed because someone, somewhere will find it offensive to their delicate sensibilities. If it wasn’t the word “gay,” it would be something else. This PC B.S. is always going to have us running in circles to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings.
It is not good to disparage, even a perverted minority group (homosexuals), by saying “that’s so gay”. But what is truly “good” in movies these days? Not much. Movies no longer reflect honor, integrity, faith or morality. They are dominated by far-left directors, producers and actors, those who are destroying the family unit and America as well. This is the reason that my family no longer pays for movies. I refuse to support the insidious message that most movies present, or the socialistic/”progressive” actors and other stake-holders.
Look, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t demand that Hollywood make movies that pretend homosexuality is normal, and then reel in the censorship by forbidding the phrase “x is so gay”.
Words can have more than one meaning. Gays don’t own the word “gay”. They don’t get to legislate its usage in the culture.
The thinking here is that to use “gay” in this context “oppresses”. And that by censoring it, all oppression will cease. Has that ever happened? No.
It’s not the words, people. It’s the thoughts. Words are not thoughts. If words were that powerful, then I would be a freakin’ god by now.
Agree 100%. The english language belongs to all of us. Homosexuals hijacked the word “gay” from its original meaning. Now you want to say who can use it in a movie or prescribe the context? Nope, you don’t get that luxury.
