The WGA is now accepting submissions for the first annual Writers Guild of America New Media Writing Awards. The deadline for submissions is 5 PM PT on Tuesday, November 23rd for the 2011 award. To be eligible for entry, an original stand-alone new media program or an original episode written for a new media series must have first been exhibited on a new media platform between December 1, 2009, and November 30, 2010. The WGA is defining a New Media platform as the Internet via a major video sharing site or unique URL, mobile devices such as cell phones or PDAs, or any other established new media platform. Only work that was written and produced under a WGA collective bargaining agreement and whose writing credits can be determined by the Guild may be submitted.

This is great… but of course you had to work with the WGA in some way and be a signatory? I think the cool thing about the web is that is free of unions and rules so up and coming artists can break such “rules” and use inexpensive tactics and new mediums to get there work out there. How do you reward those fine artists? We’ve seen that the Streamys are a sham and people with great “shows” on the internet are not truly rewarded or heralded as they should be … of course the web is flooded with series/virals/pilots/etc … but, you have to be a signatory to get a WGA New Media Award? Crazy. IMHO this is just a way for the WGA to try and wrangle more $ and works to funnel through their already imperfect process…
OldGuard, you hit the nail right on the head. This is exactly what the WGA is trying to do. Believe me, New Media Writers, you don’t need the WGA and it’s probably BETTER if you don’t deal with them. Take it from me – I *am* a WGA writer…
WGA awards are reserved for guild projects. I don’t think it devalues non guild projects.
If people want to make webseries NOT under the WGA, then they can’t win a WGA award. Feels pretty fair.
