This has to be the highest-profile effort to bring Wonder Woman to television: One of TV’s best-known creators, The Practice‘s David E. Kelley, has come on board to write and produce a new series project about the female superhero. The project, from Warner Bros Television where Kelley is based, and Warner Bros’ DC Entertainment, will be taken out to the networks shortly. Kelley, who has
created several female centered shows like Ally McBeal, has wanted to tackle a contemporary take on the World War II-era Amazon. He recently met with the DC team who also have been looking for ways to launch a new Wonder Woman TV franchise.
The comic book Wonder Woman character has evolved significantly since she first appeared in a 1941 issue of All Star Comics and recently underwent a controversial makeover. Details on Kelley’s TV series are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear if the new Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince will be the old familiar Wonder Woman or the redesigned reboot announced with great fanfare this year by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee that looks like she’s ready for Goth Day at the Galleria. (DC Comics Has Ruined Wonder Woman!) Or whether she’ll keep her signature powers and weapons, including her Lasso of Truth, her indestructible bracelets, her tiara and her invisible airplane.
Wonder Woman has presented a challenge both for feature and TV creators. That’s probably because she is the most famous female superhero in the testosterone-dominated comic world. And because she also is a big feminist icon. The most successful screen adaptation of the Wonder Woman comic books was the TV series The New Adventures of Wonder Woman starring Lynda Carter in the title role, which aired from 1975-1979, first on ABC and then on CBS. Carter has since become synonymous with the character. That will certainly present a challenge in casting the role if the project goes to pilot.
On the feature side, a Wonder Woman film has been in development hell for a decade at Warner Bros, with Joss Whedon at one point attached to write and direct for producer Joel Silver. In May, Warner chairman and CEO Barry Meyer confirmed that a new Wonder Woman feature is in development. There has been a concerted effort on part of Time Warner lately to better mine the DC properties across different platforms. The film division is expected to announce a slate of DC movies by the end of the year that would probably include Wonder Woman.
Warner Bros TV has brought DC characters to the small screen before: most recently with the CW’s Superman-themed Smallville, which is in its 10th and final season, and Fox’s Human Target, which returned for a second season. A notable recent effort to launch a new Wonder Woman series came a decade ago with Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman creator Deborah Joy LeVine as the writer.

or zooey deschanel all buffed up to Amazon fitness.
she DOES have the hair and eyes, but not the build. her sister (Emily) would be a better choice.
I don’t understand what they mean by “a contemporary take on the character”. There’s a contemporary “take” on the character every single month in the comics series.
Whenever a producer/director of one of these comic book properties deigns to explore his “vision” of what the character should be, you can bet the final product will suck. This series will be no exception.
You want a good Wonder Woman series/movie? Hire writer/artist George Perez and do everything he says.
You are correct, sir.
My prefered ‘take’ on WW and the only time I collected WW comics was when John Bryne wrote and drew the comic back in the ’90′s for three years.
Can’t go wrong with Perez though.
Perez’s take on Wonder Woman is perhaps the best ever. He turned her into a warrior who was ever bit the equal of Superman or Batman. In fact, she amongst the three was the only warrior willing to go there in terms of killing her enemies when necessary. This is why I like Lucy Lawless back in the 90s because she reminded me of what Wonder Woman could start to be like if people ever bothered to read the comic book.
I agree! Lucy Lawless was FANTASTIC as Zena – her personification of the fierce feminine was totally cut from the Wonder Woman cloth. All the 90′s tv female ass kickers were great: Buffy, Zena, and the mighty Peta Wilson at Nikita…
Lynda Carter is impossible to top. If the tv series or movie (I vote for a BIG movie) are to truly do the character justice, Peretz’s warrior princess should be the storyline.
Can you imagine? Paradise Island, the Amazons (all colors and backgrounds!), Hippolyta… Crafting Diana from clay…
I love it.
I’ve read the comics all my life (born 1975), loved the TV show in the 70′s, had audio books in the 80′s, and continue to collect the graphic novels… I watched Superfriends, and love the Justice League cartoons… The new version of Wonder Woman SUCKS, though. I can’t stand it.
Her character has evolved SO MUCH since it’s inception, there’s more than enough history to explore chronologically. Although I was SHOCKED in the last Crisis series how she killed Max Lord (because he was responsible for the murder of the Blue Beetle), but hey – even Wonder Woman is allowed to snap after 50-some odd years of being super awesome.
It is true that Wonder Woman killed Max Lord, but not because he was responsible for the murder of the Blue Beetle. Rather, Max Lord had the ability to force others to do or believe anything he wanted, using mind control, and he was using this ability to cause Superman to believe that Wonder Woman was Doomsday, and thus Superman was trying to kill her with everything he had, while WW could only fight defensively. She learned about Max controlling Superman and went to him (Max) and used her lasso on him to tell him to stop. Max said he couldn’t stop the mind link, so WW asked him how she could “fix” the problem. He said, “Kill me.” And so she did.
No she did Not kill Maxwell Lord because he had killed Blue Beetle. She killed Max Lord because he was controling SuperMan – who was trying to kill Wonder Woman & BatMan- the only way to stop SuperMan was to stop Lord- period.
Don’t get my hopes up…
Wonderwoman in a thong!
Angelina? WW doesn’t have fake lips
Katy Perry? As what… maybe a villain that kills with her horrible voice.
Angelina doesn’t have fake lips either. Angelina Jolie has always had full lips, wtf are you people talking about. Look at any of her pictures when she was young.
Big Angelina fan here, but dude, let’s be serious, she would have to be Tomb Raider buff. The role after all is more about the look and less about the attitude. Besides, the role sounds risky to me. You don’t want it to fail and while you want it to be successful you don’t want it to be too successful and risk long term associations with the character. Angie has bigger fish to fry.
Hey, the new WOnder Woman is written by J. Michael Stracynski. In case you don’tknow he’s written for Murder She Wrote and created Babylon 5. He’s also the co-conspirator in the absoluting RUINING OF SPIDER-MAN! He helped Spider-man into the worst comic book I’ve ever read and ofcourse now he writes DC’s Superman and Wonder Woman books! Why the hell would they do that. Spider-man is now the worst person ever born out of his and Joe Quesada’s stupid ideas. HE comes up with every big and/or stupid idea under the sun and just throws it into the book. He’s like a disease for comic fans. You can’t get rid of him.
End of verbal rampage.
And Alex, if you checked your facts, you’d know that JMS hated the storyline. Every character, including Aunt May, tells Peter that this is a stupid idea and he should just let Aunt May die. JMS did not even want to put his name on the last two parts; they are only there because of contractual obligations. AND, once the storyline finished he jumped ship to the Distinguished Competition.
JMS’ great with mythology. His Woman Woman is shockingly good — despite the costume snafu.
I agree- I loved Babylon 5 however I hated what he (JMS) did with Spider-Man- although that was more Quesada’s stupid idea. JMS disagreed with that storyline. For those that do not know. Spider-Man made a deal with a devil Mephisto. Where Spider-Man & MaryJane would no longer be married & everyone would forget they were ever married. Which went against the whole great power great responsibility thing. Responsible people do not make deals with the devil. Never a good idea.
Another show to “bash” the male populace … no thanks
As long as his wife gets to play one of the immortal goddesses of Amazonia, then I’m all for it.
Also, bring Evangeline Lilly back to TV for this. Or maybe lure Jessica Biel to the small screen since her career is stalled.
No more British actresses for these types of projects. Look at what happened with Bionic Woman.
no, and no. Biel is one note. Plus, we really do need a newcomer for this. They’ll probably cast a Brit.
I agree==Bridget Regan is Wonder Woman!
Sorry but I think the WW character is dated, and even a little corny. Any new WW series will die a quick death. You can say you read it here first and that you knew me back when.
Don’t be so sure of yourself.
I remember in 2001 when the Smallville TV show was first pitched, most people on AICN said it wouldn’t last past season one…
YES YES YES YES!!!! Boys… get your kleenex!
Oh Dear!
I remember loving the show when I was young but now watching that clip, I realize that Wonder Woman ran like a girl. Like a girl who had no athletic ability whatsoever.
A good actress who looks great is necessary but so is someone who might actually pass for a super-hero with the ability to take down a grown man. Someone with a bit of athleticism would be welcome. And please, no bags of bones.
Geez. I wish I hadn’t watched that clip.
I was about to post the very same thing, she runs with her arms flailing and has not muscles whatsoever…
But she’s got LUNGS! Great big bouncy lungs!
Serena Williams doesn’t run like a girl & is buff enough to beat up anybody you care to throw at her (you just might run out of stunt doubles for the bad guys; she thinks they break easily)
That’s why Jessica Biel would be such a potentially good fit.
She used to be a soccer champ!
(Maybe still practices it!)
Lynda Carter definitely wasn’t athletic, she was thin. Yet I don’t see anyone complaining about her being cast as Wonder Woman.
I forgot to add, thanks for pointing that out. People here crap on not casting “skinny actresses” but that’s just what Carter was.
Carter’s physique in the first season was perfection, to split hairs. Second season was a bit too skinny for me. She always ran like a girly girl, but hey, she was my girly girl.
Also the slow motion strip tease ‘spin’ was superior to the explosion ‘spin’ – I’m assuming shooting the strip tease version took too long, so they went with that big yellow ball.
Please, more diaphanous purple smocks on Paradise Island during sapphic javelin throwing sessions.
Good luck coming up with a newer, better theme song.
Right. The fact the belt she was wearing gave her – oh the strenght of Hercules- along with the other gifts she was given by the Greek Gods. Speed of Mercury, Wisdom of Athena ect. See looking big does not make you any stronger or weaker. That’s why it’s sci-fi. 10 years ago the pick for WW was easy- Lucy Lawless- and as far as people will not watch a show with a “gil” hero- I point to Xena which was on for years.
Let WW be played by a Transgender actress. hasn’t hollywood been clamoring for more GLBT actors? Now is their chance!
Evangeline Lilly. Naturally beautiful and stood shoulder to shoulder with her male costars during six seasons of “LOST.” She IS Wonder Woman.
Evangeline is great in ensemble. No way carrying a show. (or movie)
“all those golden age DC characters are way past their prime and are jus not reverent.”
I assume you meant “relevant.” And you’re wrong. Batman was considered damaged goods after the ’60s TV series, but Burton and Hamm revitalized the franchise extraoedinary successfully. There’s no reason Wonder Woman can’t do likewise, especially with the best writer on television behind her.
Not to sound like the grammar police, but when someone misuses the word ‘reverent’, I tend to look the other way at the party because their opinion tends to be dopey.
Betty White for Wonder Woman
Frieda Pinto for Wonder Woman!
Hey while we’re at it let’s just bring back Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Shanana, MASH, Six Million Dollar Man, Dynasty and Rich Man Poor Man, Oh wait can’t forget Roots. Are you people serious? Who’s gonna watch it? This was a good idea for the kids of the 70′s who are on here clicking their heels at the chance to revisit their childhood but today’s kids won’t tune in. The content is not mature enough for the vast majority of serious adult TV viewers and too antiquated for the kids. FLOP.
Yes if kids don’t like things like– action, adventure, fair play & doing ones best. That’s why Smallville has been on 10 years. If there is no audience why do WW comics & costumes still sell? By the way what abut Hawaii-Five-O & The Defenders?
Gina Carano!
If you’re going to throw Carano in the pot, then might as well choose one of the girls from American Gladiator!
um, she IS one of the girls from American Gladiators.
Curtis is a moron and doesn’t understand that Wonder Woman’s appeal goes way beyond the 70′s TV show. Wonder Woman is a power icon and her appeal crosses generations and eras. If they could get a TV show on WW right it would appeal to the same audience as Buffy The Vampire Slayer (which is the correct reference point – not Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley you bonehead). By the way the new Wonder Woman costume is an atrocity. It makes the Dazzler seem contemporary by comparison
@drunky
Whoa buddy! Did I strike a nerve? Hope YOUR mortgage isn’t depending on this trash because you’ll surely be homeless. Buffy’s fans are the daughters of Wonder Woman’s fans. Never allow the lies you tell and believe become one and the same. Even a moron knows better than that
Curtis, how did you like the last Batman?
Yeah another TV superhero failure! This will almost guarantee a Wonder Woman movie NEVER gets made.
People said in 2001 that “Smallville” would guarantee that another Superman movie would never get made.
Predictions are usually wrong.
Not exactly the best example. Technically accurate, but it doesn’t give hope to those hoping for a WW movie. Superman Returns took the better part of two decades to make and yet the script still felt rushed. It was a disappointment.
Reason for failure of SuperMan Returns. That was NOT SuperMan. Look at the 1st 2 movies, Smallville, Lois & Clark, & the opening of the old Adventures of SuperMan. SuperMan is an American Hero. Yes he helps the world but has midwest American values. You remove those values- why should he help. When he can easily use his powers to take over or just make money. Truth Justice & The American way. That’s what makes that Character as well as Wonder Woman.
yes hope it happens. and besides warners brothers better have a brain and not cast some reality star like Snookie to play her. they should also make an effort and cast Lynda carter as Hypolita a passing of the torch from the original wonder woman to the new version can not wait hope it happens. yes wonder woman back again. though one bad part is warner’s will say no to having super man and batman pop up if the show happens to visit and team up with her.
perhaps if ABC teamed up with David E. Kelly as EP for My Generation staring Linda Cater as Wonder Woman the series could have been saved.
Jennifer Garner definitely! And maybe she could get away with wearing more clothes, because her special effects are not her boobs, but her moves!
Linda Carter was not bad, but the NOW crap which n=has proven to really be crap since the scenes of Muslim Women being stoned, shot in the head while kneeling, Teenagers beaten to death and having her head cut oiff as they beat her. And Oh yes. ……… The never marriage and divorces of the Child Brides.. That never ending pediaphile attempt at recruiting new Muslims. Spwak out oh,m NOW.
why, exactly!
Best case scenario: Jessica Pare. Worst case: Chyna. Rotsa ruck!
BRIDGET REGAN!!!!!!!!!!
