The blogosphere was jumping late last week with a very speculative report that Baz Luhrmann had set Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Amanda Seyfried to play the leads in The Great Gatsby, a new adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Now let me tell you what’s real and what’s not: The truth is Luhrmann doesn’t know if he’ll do Gatsby next. He’s set up an original musical at Media Rights Capital that is also a candidate for his next directing slot.
But Luhrmann does love DiCaprio after directing him in Romeo & Juliet and nearly getting to the starting line with him in an Alexander The Great film that got derailed because Oliver Stone got into production first with Colin Farrell. (And we know how that fared.) I’m told Baz has had a conversation with DiCaprio for the role of Jay Gatsby, played by Robert Redford in the 1974 film. This has been an obvious development, even mentioned by Deadline’s Nikki Finke when she broke the exclusive in late 2008 that Luhrmann was working on a new Gatsby.
The latest is that Leo hasn’t said yes. In fact, no offer has been made. Yes, Tobey Maguire is at the top of Luhrmann’s mind to do Nick Carraway, the narrator played by Sam Waterston in the 1974 bomb. Despite the speculation about Seyfried, I’m told that role is wide open in Luhrmann’s mind. Mia Farrow played the Daisy role in the 1974 film, and I found her so annoying that I couldn’t for a moment imagine why Redford’s Gatsby would have pined for her all those years.
Who doesn’t reimagine Fitzgerald’s enigmatic classic, so here are some casting suggestions for both a young and old interpretation. If Baz casts young, I’d like to see Chris Pine or Michael Pitt as Gatsby if Leo turns it down. We agree that Tobey would be a great Nick. Daisy is the key, but in the book she’s a much more manipulative and calculating socialite than the aging ingenue that Farrow portrayed last time around.
Nikki likes Carey Mulligan for Daisy, but I’d go with Natalie Portman. Zachary Quinto has the edge with us to play Daisy’s dangerously jealous husband Tom because he has the sexual edge that Bruce Dern was missing. And Emma Stone or Michelle Monaghan could handle the sexpot Myrtle Wilson which Karen Black played in too ditzy fashion. Both actresses could bring an earthy knowingness to enhance the role. And I suggest Rachel McAdams as Jordan.
Casting it older could be just as interesting. I suggest Brad Pitt as Gatsby, Nicole Kidman as Daisy, Jon Hamm as Tom (which also could be played by George Clooney), Hugh Jackman for Nick, and Naomi Watts for Jordan.

And that’s why you’re working at deadline and not casting. All your choices read obvious to me, except quinti which is a good call. But chris pine? Are you kidding? What has that guy done to prove he can handle the great gatssy? Also, you missed a way better list. The Apatow version. Rogen as gataby. Cera as nick. Daisy can be that asian chic from knocked up.
If DiCaprio says no, what about Christian Bale as Gatsby and Sam Worthington as Tom. I know, I know, both were in Terminator. Bale and Hamm would also be a good pairing.
Jordan is supposed to be a golf champ – Jennifer Garner maybe. A female jock that seduces Nick.
Daisy is supposed to be young and the holy grail for Gatsby, but in the end not likable (sticks with tom and never admits drove the car).
Will they make it a modern version or stick with circa 1922?
Will they film it on the east end of Long Island?
Leo for sure as Gatsby. . Also thumbs up for McGuire and Portman as Daisy, and maybe Tom Hardy for Tom.
Too late Baz! My bro Vinnie Chase already starred in “Gatsby” for Scorsese!
If Leo signs on to this film it’ll be a huge hit and a critical success. Otherwise, it’ll be a huge disaster.
The man picks good movies. If he bails, I bail.
Leonardo is the man for this one! He would make the best Jay Gatsby. He’s the only new age actor that would really fit the part. Not sure about Daisy, whose right for her because she must be spoilt, child-like, pretty but not beautiful and classy???
The key female character is actually Jordan baker – she should have more screen time and be manipulative- sadly everyone thinks if the novel as the story of gatsby and daisy but it’s really the story of two outsiders being nick and jordan and to add another level, Jordan is most likely a closeted lesbian (seriously)- it’s a novel that needs to be rethought cinematically
Paul Giamatti as Gatsby, Zooey Deschanel as Daisy, directed by Guillermo del Toro, with a 12-foot animatronic tree demon as Tom.
David Schwimmer as Gatsby, The Situation as Tom, America Ferrara as Daisy.
I think Seyfried is way too young to be paired with Leo and Tobey. But I like the Portman suggestion. I could also see Anne Hathaway or Michelle Williams. Maybe even Reese Witherspoon. For Gatsby, I could see Ryan Gosling or maybe James Franco. Jake Gyllenhaal’s blandness might actually come in handy for once to play Nick.
Excellent suggestions. Gosling as Gatsby. Portman as Daisy. But I’d go Andrew Garfield as Nick.
Michael Pitt???? Have you lost your freaking mind????
He should do the “prequel.” Tell Gatsby’s story before West Egg
Then you can cast really young.
Zach Quinto is a terrible choice.
I forgot to mention Joseph Gordon Levitt. He could probably pull off any of the male characters in the movie.
Now, I haven’t read the book since high school, but I recall Myrtle being described as UNsexy physically, but very sensuous.
so… katherine heigl?
Leo would be a terrible choice.
I don’t think I can stomach another gloom and doom Leo in a drama.
Hasn’t he done enough drama? Let’s see what he can do in a comedy.
Leo has been playing the same tortured joyless character in movies. I cannot even remember when the last time he smiled in a film.
Can someone please tell me why Sam Worthington gets film roles?
The guy is a horrible actor. There is ZERO emotion in this guy’s acting.
The Clash of Titans was laughable with him as the lead. He lolled like he was teleported straight out of Avatar.
Stop giving him roles he doesn’t deserve.
Hollywood is in a sad state when a vanilla actor like Chris Pine is touted by a legit Hollywood columnist as someone qualify to duplicate a legendary role like Gatsby.
I agree with your thoughts on Leo. I don’t think he can relax enough to convincingly play Gatsby. Afterall, it was like the first onscreen version of the “Dude”, only in the 1920′s. Worthington was good in T4 and Avatar, but everything else has been meh for him.
OMG THANK YOUU. i agree about the leo thing, hes soo depressing. i mean, gatsby is a pretty depressing character himself but i see someone more interesting playing him. leo is kind of a drag to me, his acting is so bubblegum to me now. even though i like him as an actor, im a huge great gatsby fan, and i would love to see someone cooler as gatsby himself….. i think christian bale would be a perfect gatsby!
Pleeease, people. For this story to work, Daisy and Tom have to be complete thoroughbreds – Portman really? She is Jewish. Still, it would be better than ending up w/ Kate Bosworth. Think of the jingling voice that reminds you of money…
It has to be the younger version of Gwyneth Paltrow.
Leo – here his not quite man enough voice will work.
Definitely NO to Michael Pitt or Chris Pine. Leo’s way out of their league acting-wise. Also, Gatsby is hinted to be part Jewish in the book (his real name is Gatz) so there is no need to always cast a WASP-y looking blond actor. Andrew Garfield would be a great choice for a younger actor.
Michelle Williams should be Daisy or Evan Rachel Wood if they want someone younger.
Christina Hendricks could be Myrtle.
Leo would make an AMAZING Gatsby. Leo would make an amazing anything. Seriously can anybody think of a SINGLE movie where he didn’t nail the performance? Exactly. A king.
“gang of NY” and “the man of the iron mask” and “the beach”
“The Departed,” “Blood Diamond,” “What’s Eathing Gilbert Grape?” “Shutter Island,” “Inception.” Every actor has few bombs. Few have three Oscar nominations.
You just can’t do the Great Gatsby without Leonardo he’s made for the part. He brought Shakespeare’s Romeo alive again for a lot of young movie goers and he’s gonna do it again if he plays Jay Gatsby. He’s the bomb!
No one needs Baz Luhrmann to turn the great American novel into zany, queeny, overly sentimental, over-the-top, Australian-skewing horse-sh!t like his last four movies.
Daisy reads as one of the most annoying characters in literature in my opinion so i dont know how mia farrow was bad. well except for the fact that the entire movie was god awful
Ok that’s all wrong. Ian Sommerholder as Nick, Leighton Meister as Daisy, Joe Jonas as Tom and Trevor Donovan as Gatsby. Green LIT
Does anybody really care about this? Does the world really need another adaptation of The Great Gatsby?
I’m going to get all high school english nerd but here goes:
“Mia Farrow played the Daisy role in the 1974 film, and I found her so annoying that I couldn’t for a moment imagine why Redford’s Gatsby would have pined for her all those years.”
Well, because Gatsby isn’t really pining for the girl so much as the idealized past and the second chance at the innocence of youth and that feeling of being happy and content by connection to another person. If he could see Daisy for what she was he’d travel to the point farthest from the egg(?).
Along the same lines, you don’t exactly need a great actor to play Gatsby. In the novel, he sometimes came across as a vague ideal that a real person. And even Fitzgerald admitted that he never really got a line on him.
zach galifianakis as gatsby, chow yun fat as nick, a cgi katherine hepburn as daisy, and jason statham as jordan. oh, and chloe kardashian as tom.
Scarlett Johannson as Daisy!
