UPDATE & EXCLUSIVE: I just spoke with Zack Snyder, who confirms that as soon as he completes post on Sucker Punch, he’ll move right into Warner Bros’ long awaited next Man of Steel movie in development with Chris Nolan and David Goyer. “I’ve been a big fan of the character for a long time, he’s definitely the king of all superheroes, he’s the one,” Snyder, who directed Watchmen and 300, told me. “It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I’ve always felt he was kind of awesome. I’ll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it.”
EXCLUSIVE: Zack Snyder has been chosen to direct the new installment of Superman for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Snyder was on a short list of directors that I recently revealed met with the studio as well as producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas. Other choices at the time included helmers Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, and Duncan Jones. I think Snyder is an inspired choice. He is a cornerstone filmmaker for Warner Bros., a visual stylist whose efforts for the studio include 300, Watchmen, and the upcoming Sucker Punch. Deadline revealed back on February 9 that the DC Comics stalwart Superman became a priority project when Nolan agreed to godfather it. He and David S. Goyer hatched the story and Goyer wrote the script. The new Superman’s producers also include Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder while co-financer Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull will serve as executive producer. I’m sure there will be hot debate on Snyder as the choice, but judging from 300, you can be sure the Man of Steel will have an inspired six-pack.

Huh. How will a Chris Nolan-Zack Snyder mash turn out?? It might just out well.
I only have one thing to say: Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
How did you do that!?
Ha! You successfully broke the width of the site.
our prayers have been finally answered – no one better than Snyder to direct Superman
Give the dude as much money as he wants
Excellent news. Watchmen must have been his interview for the job. I’m majorly looking forward to this.
I want a Superman movie — not a video game.
THIS.
If Nolan chose Snyder to direct the film than Nolan is not nearly as good a producer as he is a director.
I hope they prove me wrong but it seems like Warner Bros choice of directors is the one who directs Warner Bros last big picture. Even if that big picture flops, they still choose the director rather than taking the time to research into other directors backgrounds.
The problem with Zack Snyder films is that his films lacks heart, which superman is full of. Zack Snyder films are usually brutal.
Ben Affleck was once considered to get the job. He would have gotten the job of directing Superman if only the Town was the one released on September 24th instead of September 17th.
so Watchmen lacked heart too? you nuts.
Of course watchmen lacked heart. Zack snyder, however was the right choice in that case because the comic also was too dark. As for Legend of the Guardians, it lacked genuine heart and the jokes fell flat. Most of the fighting sequences are too brutal for kids. What little heart it had was overwhelmed by moonblinks and fighting. Of course I saw legend of the guardians. Zack Snyder films are dark like they lacked heart. Christopher Nolan films are dark in tone but always had tons of heart. In Christopher nolans interior comes upbeat and hopeful conclusions. Zack snyder films are usually more downbeat. Even legend of the guardians wasn’t completely upbeat in it’s ending.
Seen “Legend of the Guardians” yet? Tons of heart. “Dawn of the Dead,” “300″ and “Watchmen” were all movies with stories that didn’t lend themselves to having a lot of heart. He’s a talented filmmaker. I’m sure he’ll figure out how to convey heart. Sheesh.
“The problem with Zack Snyder films is that his films lacks heart,”
I’d say that’s a problem with Nolan’s films, not Snyder’s.
No shit
Snyder’s films may not be easy to penetrate but they got the biggest hearts in mainstream cinema. Nolan is like the opposite.
Nolan’s films may be dark as well but he is not brutal like Zack Snyder. In The Dark Knight, he resolved Two Face’s problem by having him die as a hero. For Watchmen, in order to resolve the conflicts, many, many people had to die and suffer. This proves that NOlan only uses madness when necessary while Snyder is unreasonably brutal. Zack Snyder films may have a little heart but it’s overwhelmed by sheer brutality. Nolan films may be a little drastic as well but they are overshadowed by, at least hopeful outlooks. Batman wanted to hide the truth that Harvey was Two Face to keep morale. Rorschach wanted to reveal the truth and would have, if he wasn’t vaporized. Besides, many people had to suffer in Watchmen to stop the conflicts, while very few people had to suffer in The Dark Knight. Batman tried to stop the Joker from winning and the bombs from going off while Ozymandias allowed the explosions to go off and most of the heroes thought that as the best way to handle problems. This proves Zack Snyder films are uncontrollable for the most part.
Set it in the 50s with giant robots and you have me. I don’t need or want another modern Superman, and if Lex is the bad guy planning another land grab shoot me now.
I stopped reading after I saw Goyer’s name mentioned. Marvel has to be LTAO right now.
if only Richard Pryor were alive to reprise his role
If both directors bring the best aspects of their respective talents to the table it could be good.
I’m really glad everyone from AICN stopped by.
YES!!!!!!!!!
Zack Snyder is so perfect for this. He has a great visual style. People rag on him for the ramping habit, but, I’m sorry, it looks cool in an action film context.
Superman needs a director with a strong, energized style. He’s an alien in red underwear.
I have to agree with Chris that the Superman story is full of heart, and I’m not sure Zack knows how to do “heart”, which worked fine for his other flicks, but not for Superman. On the other hand it may be just crazy enough to actually help have a successful Superman movie franchise again. I am hopeful, but very afraid of what disaster may come from this. Please don’t screw it all up folks.
How many times can they reinvent Superman? I can see doing it with Batman, because you can always make it more dark and creepy, but Superman? Eh…
Wait a minute! Didn’t this guy direct “Watchmen”? A horrible, crappy, overly-long movie that even I, a comic fan, couldn’t even sit through. Are we gonna get the whole origin story again? Or a Lois and Clark redux? Bleech.
Snyder is getting too much flack. The man is a visual genius and can do it without over-inflating a budget. If anything, his biggest complaint is being too shallow, but with Nolan’s intellect driving the brain and Snyder driving the exterior, I believe an excellent film can be produced. I’m just curious to see which of Nolan’s “film it realistically” or Snyder’s “CGI through the roof” tendencies wins out.
Taylor Kinney would be a good candidate for the role of Superman. This should be an exciting movie given the names involved.
Taylor Kinney! strong suggestion. Hope they give him a look.
Recently Our superman had a real bad time.. may his power gets some soul. we have already witnessed in 300 and watchmen.. i think this is gonna be a turning point for our superhero…
You guys r a**holes.
Snyder’s gonna KILL this movie. Nolan and Goyer r gonna make sure the script is there, his job is to freak the visuals and make it iconic… that he will do.
Think “300″ meets “batman begins” in the SKY
still think Darren Aronofsky or duncen jones would be better choice, now we’ll just have a bunch of slow-mo and brainless actions. Jones and Aronofsky would have crushed it with their dark tone, which is a better fit to the nolanverse.
DOPE!!!
So were going to get a hyper reality over styled Supeman? Seems like the wrong direction.
HOMOEROTIC!
Let’s just look at The Social Network and cast the ultimate Superman already.
6 feet 5 tall, powerful voice, great actor, very charismatic.
Armie Hammer.
There, perfect cast, done deal.
I love that Armie or his agent is camped out all day here. It increases Deadline’s prestige while simultaneously decreasing Armie’s prestige.
I don’t care if you are Armie’s agent, mom, wife, self, brother, ghost, body double, or left nutt….
Casting him as Superman is the best idea I’ve heard since Andrew Garfield as Spiderman.
Dude, please stop.
