EXCLUSIVE: Primetime musical series are red-hot courtesy of Fox’s Glee, and ABC, whose sibling Disney Channel started the genre’s resurgence with High School Musical and Hannah Montana, is developing a couple of music-themed series for next fall. Leading the pack is a drama with musical elements from writer Bob Kushell (Samantha Who?) starring Tony winner Idina Menzel. Another one is a musical comedy from Robert Horn, who penned two Disney Channel movie musicals this year: the High School Musical-spinoff Sharpay Fabulous, starring Ashley Tisdale, and The Suite Life: The Movie.
Hot off her recurring role on Glee last season, Idina Menzel is headlining her own musical hourlong project, a mother-daughter relationship drama in the vein of Gilmore Girls. It will star the Broadway actress as the single mother of a teenager who, to make ends meet, waits tables and performs at weddings and bar mitzvahs, odd jobs that Menzel herself worked early on while pursuing a Broadway career. Kushell, who had been looking to do a musical series for the past 10 years, is writing the script for ABC Studios and will executive produce with David Knoller (Big Love). Menzel and her manager Heather Reynolds will serve as producers. Menzel, who originated the roles of Maureen in Rent and Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, earned Tony nominations for both and won for Wicked. She will make her New York Philharmonic debut on Feb. 5 and may also return to Glee, where she plays the mother of star Lea Michele, later this season. The ABC project was packaged by ICM; Menzel is managed by One Entertainment. This is one of 3 sales for Kushell this development season. He also has in the works a multi-camera comedy at NBC and an animated comedy at Fox.
The untitled Robert Horn project, from Sony TV, is described as a half-hour female-driven musical comedy. It is based on a concept by UTA-repped producers Lindy Ascher and Susan Cartsonis (Beastly) who will executive produce with Horn. Horn, who co-penned the Broaway musical 13, will write the script. Like Kushell, Horn, repped by CAA and the Shuman Co., has 2 more TV projects in the works: a half-hour at ABC Studios and a one-hour musical at ABC Family.

Seriously? We now have a total of 4 musical shows in development for next year.Jesus.
Yay, Lindy Ascher!!! Can’t wait to see your show!!
Well considering Samantha Who sucked and ABC had a musical drama with Johnny Lee Miller and cancelled it mid run there is little to show that these will be successful or alowed enough leeway to find an audience if there is one as Glee can’t be selling much on Itunes these days with their terrible song choices (really singing in the rain mashed with rhiannas umbrrella) and the writing has plumeted precipitously since their freshman season
It’s also only a question of time before Ryan Murphy crashes and burns. He always has, and likely always will. Glee’s second season is already showing signs, and is far too preachy.
I’m curious why — considering how desperate that network is — that NBC hasn’t tried to resurrect “Fame”. I can only guess it’s a rights issue with what’s left of MGM, because it’s the obvious choice to reboot (regardless of how bad the remake movie was).
xolitz: I think the fact that Glee has a quarter of the top 20 songs on iTunes right makes you wrong.
This will be fabulous. And way better than the Kristen Chenoweth show.
Are you talking about Pushing Daisies?? Because that show was amazing.
I’m excited to see Idina on tv every week, but I’m a little nervous about it being a musical show because I want her to find something that is going to do really well. Here’s to hoping!
I hope all the shows developed for next season will have musical numbers. Cause that’s what American surely wants given the success of Glee. More of the same always is what’s worked on network TV.
Yay (part2) for Lindy Ascher and Susan Cartsonis — two very talented producers. Can’t wait!
Network television just…doesn’t get it, do they?
The highest concept musical pilot I’ve read so far has been ISADORA’S BOX. Is anyone developing that? The chick who co-wrote it starred in Andy Richter Controls the Universe. I forget the other writers. Good for Glee and its success.
Got glut?
Considering this Idina Menzel and everything she seems to do turns to pure gold! I have no worries about the show! Many from Glee will tune in to watch and with her group of Fanzels! It should be a huge hit!!!
Congrats Idina!!
ABC: On the cutting edge of what the competition tried and succeeded at two years ago
Go Lindy!
This is very exciting news! It’ll be exciting to see Idina on my TV every week!
Not to worry. Cop Rock Redux should kill this trend quite nicely…
Dumb and Dumber
Great a Glee copy. Any any network Prez come up with anything original?
This is nothing. There must be at least two dozen variations on Modern Family in the works at the nets. Imitation not imagination rules!!
Huge Idina fan. What an amazing voice! Nice to see a musical entry not just aimed at tweens. Looking forward to it!
Just call it Gleemore Girls and air it as a recurring sketch on MadTV. Oh wait…
Sounds like a pretty stupid show, but I’m a huge Idina Menzel fan so Ill probably watch it anyway
How soon until NBC announces a zombie musical?
Part 3 – Yay for Lindy Ascher and Susan Cartsonis! Love them both.
So exciting! Robert Horn is one great comedic talent! GREAT writer! Cannot WAIT to see what he puts out!! ABC is brilliant for signing him!!!
Robert Horn deserves everything he gets! He is such an amazing talent, not to mention
a fabulous, hard-working “gentleman”……….Hooray……..A good guy WINS! Congrats to ABC, Disney and anyone else who hires this gifted man.
Geez, you hardcore cynics–lighten up! Life’s tough enough these days. And if anyone schedules ANOTHER procedural, I’m gonna blow my head off. Networks: just give us something fun to watch that’s well written and has talented, beautiful people in it. Make me laugh and cry, Idina, and I’m all yours.
