EXCLUSIVE: American Dad executive producer Nahnatchka Khan is emerging as the comedy star of this buying season with a second half-hour project that sparked heated bidding. A month after Fox won the bidding war for her single-camera family comedy Connected, ABC just landed Khan’s relationship comedy Dealbreaker in a similarly competitive situation. Both projects are produced by 20th TV where Khan is under an overall deal. Khan will co-write Dealbreaker, which landed a premium script commitment with penalty from ABC, with American Dad writer Laura McCreary. It is based on the blog by comics Dave Horwitz and Marisa Pinson and their recent book of the same name. The blog and the book are described as a “hilarious reference guide to the qualities that, when discovered, transform the ‘date you hope to go home with’ into the ‘date you pray never calls again’” and as a catalogue of characteristics that serve as early warning signs of possible relationship discontent. Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, which had optioned the rights to the book, will serve as executive producers on the TV project. Dealbreaker is not related in any way to Dealbreakers, the fake dating-advice talk show on NBC’s 30 Rock that was built around Liz Lemon’s catchphrase, “That’s a dealbreaker, ladies.” It is the latest in a string of comedy projects based on blogs/books/Twitter accounts picked up by the networks in light of the successful launch of CBS’ Twitter feed-based comedy series $#*! My Dad Says. CBS is developing 2 more Twitter feed-based comedies for next season, Dear Girls Above Me and Shh … Don’t Tell Steve, while ABC is working on a series based on the Awkward family Photos blog/book. Showtime is developing Boycrazy, a half-hour comedy based on Alexi Wasser’s provocative blog ImBoyCrazy.com, while ABC is developing a comedic drama project based on the blog and the book The Lost Girls. Khan and McCreary are with WME.TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

And let’s not forget HBO going whole hog with Brandt Joel’s wife and her Pulitzer worthy blog exploits…ahem…
Who could forget?
But going back even further, all these blog deals remind of the heady days when Mike Eisner bought the rights to the bestselling book “The Joys of Sex” and figured, well, it has no story, but it’s just so popular, let’s just attach Belushi and make it a comedy.
Someone once told me that Hollywood cannot identify quality, it can only buy excitement.
I get it now.
Will they owe Tina Fey & NBC residuals considering 30 Rock featured a show within a show about the EXACT same thing 3 years ago (it was a called Deal Breakers, I believe)?
Yeah wondering the same…Tina Fey’s character on 30 Rock wrote a BOOK called DealBreaker about the same exact topic. This aired years ago.
How is this Khan person original or even creative??? She blatantly ripped off Tina Fey.
How can you post this story without mentioning the “Dealbreaker” show from 30 Rock?
to be fair, this blog was in existence long before 30 rock made the dealbreaker storyline…
the blog dealbreaker started before the 30 rock episode
Shit My Dad Says is absolute feces! Not a good horse to hitch a wagon to…
Of all the people trying to launch a sitcom via Twitter, at least these guys are being straightforward about it: http://twitter.com/myzanyfamily
It’s like meta… meta.
here’s some more ideas for shows:
* The Stuffington Post – a drama about a politically liberal aggreggator
* Koogle – a comedy about a Jewish food themed search engine
* Eggslist – a reality show about a chicken farmer selling product online.
How about “Lame Attempts at Humor as seen on Internet” ?
ouch. I resemble that.
just went over to the dealbreaker blog and could not get through the first page. SNORE. i guess just because it’s a blog and a book means a development exec doesn’t have to actually THINK OR READ OR LISTEN is a major selling point these days. fabulous. tv execs for the most part are overworked dweebs bordering on the verge of brain-dead so i guess i shouldn’t be too hard on them.
Here’s hoping all these blog/twitter account ideas are actually good and not a knee-jerk “lets sign everything” reaction to bleep my dad says. NO ONE is watching bleep. It just appears that way because of the cushy scheduling and constant big bang theory 1 minute over-runs. It’s this seasons Samantha Who?
There’s a diff between a real blog and a marketing tool whose sole reason for existence is to market the future book and tv-show concept or to promote an actor. Usually, marketing tools are created by professionals, blogs are written by Joe and Jane from Idaho.
The comments on this post are funnier than that blog.
My paperweight is funnier than that blog.
Dealbreaker was way before the 30 Rock knock off. The Dealbreaker book is really funny.
Dealbreaker is a very fun read! Marisa Pinson and Dave Horwitz have come up with a truly hilarious premise. When is the next book coming out?
The Dealbreaker brook really is a good read. I think the premise might lend itself to a scripted show better than $#*! My Dad Says.
