EXCLUSIVE: Adult Swim’s next series is a mouthful. The network has handed a 12-episode order to Paul Scheer’s NTSF:SD:SUV which, as the title suggests, is a parody of the ubiquitous genre of crime procedurals. NTSF:SD:SUV, created by and starring Scheer, originated as a mock promo (video below) that aired on another Adult Swim parody series, Rob Corddry’s Childrens Hospital, which spoofs medical shows. Scheer, who guest starred on Childrens Hospital, is writing NTSF:SD:SUV and will executive produce the series with Childrens Hospital executive producer Jon Stern. The project leapfrogged the pilot stage, going from the clip, directed by Eric Appel, straight to series. The promo features other actors, including Rob Riggle, Brandon Johnson and and June Raphael. Some of them are expected to appear in episodes of NTSF:SD:SUV but not as regulars. (Riggle recently inked a development deal with CBS and is attached to a Robert Smigel project there.) Paul Scheer, probably best known for his work on the MTV sketch comedy series Human Giant, which which he co-created, wrote and starred in with Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel, also co-stars on FX’s comedy The League. He is with UTA and Principato Young.

They couldn’t even sustain this little short, so a series is a tougher road. This is more like Son of the Beach and Krod Mondoon than Get Smart or Sledgehammer and I think the two shows that IFC has in the pipeline, the Proft and Spencer shows, sound more promising.
Yeah. If you can’t make three minutes either interesting or funny, I have no idea how keep it up for 22.
Yeah– the title and idea are awesome….but I did not even crack a smile. Where the comedy at?
Hey, let’s take the guy who’s the weakest part of everything he’s in, and make him the star of something!
Very funny. I suppose I might appreciate a grittier look that’s instep with the procedurals they’re lampooning. But it looks very funny.
I literally can’t believe someone hasn’t used the “Bomb in brain triggered by fear” as the set-up to a real thriller starring Jason Statham.
These guys are funny as hell, but I couldn’t shake my MacGruber hangover while watching this.
Okay. Here we go again with the mediocrity. We all know Ed Helms is the poster boy. But close behind is Rob Riggle. Oh yes, you get a giggle every now an then. But since when did a giggle count as great talent? What has happened. When did D and C equal A and B?
You forgot to mention Rob Cordoroy. Seems to be an influx of nothingness.
Helen B.
The first promo, included in “Childrens Hospital”‘s first episode on Adult Swim was actually funnier. This one was basically extended to allow two former webisodes (as CH started its existence) to be combined and reach the standard length of an Adult Swim show.
You can also expect as a regular June Raphael, aka Mrs Paul Scheer.
The only things these guys are dull in is scripted comedy. See them on an improv stage in NYC and they’ll blow you away.
Rob Riggle yelling? How novel.
I didn’t laugh once at the clip/promo. Not once. And I usually like this stuff. I like two of the participants who I know personally. I really, really wanted to like it. But — it’s not funny. And it’s bland.
That said, I like to see Adult Swim going for the live action/parody thing. Animation is soooo overdone.
YES:
The subtle things…
– taking off the mask with the eye patch to reveal…the same face without the eye patch
– removing the sunglasses…just to put on a different pair
NO:
Any of the more overt comedy in the rest of the trailer.
NET:
I’m getting nervous *for* these guys, thinking of the amount of work it’ll take to make this thing really sing over an entire season…
REASONS FOR HOPE:
Strangers With Candy seemed like it was a one trick pony at first; but some actual thought for the material, gifted writing and inspired acting from the cast turned this into something that never got less absurd and legitimately boasted the level of character development and depth that more famous shows are known for. See also South Park.
REASONS TO FEEL EXACTLY THE WAY MOST OF YOU DO:
Sarah Silverman Program, anything after the turd starting cooling off (my estimation: middle of Season Two)…funny people involed, zingy, not sustainable. See also Family Guy.
FACT: Lamest comment in history.
No, no, no, and….no! Funny or die, no. I didn’t fucking care. The whole thing was overdone, driven by inexperienced actors in a clique plot.
A “clique” plot? What does that mean, exactly? You’re the reason so much shit gets on the air. Keep it up!
Paul Scheer is one of the nicest (and funniest) guys in town. Couldn’t be happier for him.
Boring. And what’s with the communist shirt? Communists killed more people than all the wars of the 20th century combined. Does he think that’s funny? Why not wear a nazi shirt while he’s at it?
Uh, crack a history book every once and a while — the “communists” you’re so eager to hate defeated Hitler in WWII. The Americans showed up and dealt with what was left of the German army, and good thing too, because the German military at full strength would have made pretty quick work of the good ole’ US of A.
Stalin Killed 10 million more people than Hitler. How about you open a history book.
I love Children’s Hospital but this just doesn’t look that good. I’m sure once it comes out it’ll be funny but this trailer doesn’t do it any favors.
Just god awful. I’m sure Paul Scheer was funny in high school but he hasn’t been since. And someone seriously needs to make Rob Riggle go away.
every time i see this ad on adult swim, i wish it were a legit show. can’t believe they actually went through with it. i really hope it works.
scheer is a great writer.
Are you out of your fucking mind? Are you saying the Russian Army did all of the heavy lifting and the “good ole US of A” did nothing but mop up? What history book are you reading? Published in Moscow, no doubt. Would the German Army of 1939 defeated the American forces of 1939? Maybe, we were ostensibly at a peacetime status then. But after 1943, different ball game. Oh, one other “minor” point — the multi-billions worth of armaments the “good ‘ole US of A” handed over to the Soviets to defeat the Germans. And “Sam Hain” has a totally valid point–what Hitler the scumbag did to Jews pales mightily in comparison to the 39 MILLION Russians Stalin the scumbag intentionally murdered through purges in the 1930′s.
To each their own but I’m really excited for the show. In my opinion Paul Scheer is one of the greatest, most creative, and consistantly funny comedians in the business.
Please comment again after the show airs. I’m interested to see if anyone’s opinions will have changed (hopefully for the better).
