It was a short run for AMC’s Rubicon, which is being canceled after one season. The political thriller, produced by Warner Horizon Television, premiered on Aug. 1, a year after it was ordered to series, and never found a wide audience, averaging 1.6 million viewers and 439,000 among 18-49 in its first season. It becomes the first AMC original series to get canceled. Here is AMC’s statement: “Rubicon gave us an opportunity to tell a rich and compelling story and we’re very proud of the series. This was not an easy decision, but we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a phenomenally talented and dedicated team.”

Official AMC first big f-up.
Nobody’s perfect.
Happens to us all.
What about the Prisoner? That sucked.
probbably your ass got kicked by the same people that the show was trying to portray! This was the best show I’ve ever watched in my entire 61 years of life!!!!!!!! The worst decisoon by AMC. Hope another channel picks up the series. No more AMC
Just heard the news. A bad decision to say the least. As far as T.V. goes this show was near the top.
AMC has the high class problem of too many pilots and not enough time slots. RUBICON may go down in history along with DAMAGES and THE WIRE as one of cable’s most intelligent shows.
The show couldn’t have been very expensive – Starz, Showtime, WHERE YOU AT??
They would have room if they aired two shows from late Feb. to May, late May to August and August to November.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Rubicon wanted you to think it was a smart show, but it wasn’t.
They work in an ultra-high security building with an unlocked, unguarded door to the roof.
The lead guy pulls apart light sockets filled with listening bugs but then puts them back, but whoever’s listening didn’t hear the socket getting taken apart.
There’s a bug in the owl statue on his desk and yet he openly fires his assistant in the office and tells her it’s because she’s spying on him for their boss.
People bust out whiskey and drink in this high-security, uptight office.
Etc.
It’s not a smart show and the story moved at a glacial pace. My wife quit on it after 5 episodes and I quit after 7. Not surprised at all it got cancelled.
Agreed, there were many plot holes — it really was not well-written at all. It was also not well cast.
It had fantastic cinematography, which is pretty much all it had going for it. Even that became tedious after a while; watching nothing happen for 15 minutes eventually gets on your nerves.
It was self-indulgent, and pseudo-intellectual. It appealed to those who wanted to appear intelligent and elitist.
At the end of the day, it was the worst-paced show in the history of TV, and otherwise mediocre — if well shot.
It deserved to die.
What?… not enough SEX and F and N words … to exite you brother?… Ah you understand cinematography?
And I’m not surprised you didn’t get it.
Thanks for using virtually the same screen name you used on another recent Deadline post… Now I know who you are. This will be fun.
And since when have you had fun?
For those who call this fun.
Amen! This show was like the mid-level student at a boarding school. Just because you make references to smart books’ titles doesn’t mean you understand them. Pretentious, but not smart; slow, but sloppy. There’s a reason its average viewer age was somewhere in the mid-60s. They had Miranda Richardson in a TV show and didn’t know what the hell to do with her the entire season.
as a fan of this show, this is a real disapointment. the ending wasn’t at all satisfying and i was relying on a follow-up season. arg!!!!! i was so hooked by the end.
Wow, that sucks – that was a good show…
Sad news for quality TV, Rubicon ended the series great and I was hoping it would continue knowing that it would get cancelled… I’m not surprised. People would rather watch crap like Two and Half Men then tune in on a great conspiracy thriller that makes you think on the economy then 15 minutes on a fart joke.
Disappointed it is canceled but was disappointed with the series.
Slow, but smart, thoughtful, intriguing and well made. It was good TV; too bad. It kind of reminded me of “TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER SPY’.
Yes! I’ve descibed it elsewhere as like reading a really good book and TTSS is another fine example of what I mean. Oh well, let’s hope the new Tinker Tailor is as good as the original.
This needs to get picked up by a premium cable net. A smart, well acted, elegant show for those who hate to be spoon-fed their narrative. Showtime, HBO, Starz, Epix this is the stuff you should be fighting over.
bummer it got better once annie parisse came on board. the ending was bad though. shame they can’t follow through on the story. direct tv should get on this like damages and friday night lights
This show was SLOW yet intelligent … The pacing/story/characters was not up to par w/ a Mad Men but it didn’t know what/where it wanted to go. So, chalk this up to a good try … but yeah for Walking Dead right?
That’s why Damages blew them off. Best show in years. Except Mad Men, which is extremely “tired” – this network is dead for me. To not give Rubicon a 2nd chance is a decision only novice programmers could make. Head of Programming – put em to sleep.
Plot was slow, stupid and meandering to say the least.
And we do wish you had said less.
Well well, we’ll always have “In Whom We Trust” and “Waywards Sons”
Bravo, Starz, Direct TV, Showtime should all be circling this show. So smart! So great. What is wrong with AMC? Mad Men’s ratings continually suck.
I predict we’ll be discussing Rubicon in 2050 the way we reminisce The Prisoner today. Hopefully Terriers can tough it out – I long for the continuance of high-quality scripted entertainment.
are you me?
RUBICON was at its best in its quiet moments with the team and the day to day intelligence work. it was, by far, at its worst when it was playing the big conspiracy angles and making attempts at “action.”
Kale Ingram should get a CIA Ops spin-off. One of the best characters on TV in recent memory.
Very dissapointed. The middle of the season lacked energy but as we got towards the end the show picked up pace and I enjoyed it very much. Badge Dale and the character that played Kale were great together. Second season could have gone in any number of different directions and I was excited to see what they chose. Hopefully FX or Showtime will step up.
RUBICON WAS A GREAT SHOW! It took a minute to get going again after the first couple of episodes BUT I enjoyed RUBICON immensely all the way through. The actors were wonderful and subtle. The story-line ideas and possibilities held big promise. Unfortunately due to short-sighted and robotic non-thinking by AMC’s bean-counters not having another over-stylized INSTANT hit on their hands (a la MAD MEN) we will never know what could have been. I was very much looking forward to a 2nd season of RUBICON. I am very disappointed to hear thi,s and now must question AMC’s true commitment to quality programming.
This is disappointing news. After a slow start, the series really picked up midway through the season. It was well-acted and very thought-provoking. I’m disappointed that AMC didn’t want to give it one more season to try and attract an aud, although I suppose that if it wasn’t attracting viewers this season, it would be a hard road to hoe next season… still, disappointing news nonetheless. I’ll hold out hope for another cabler to pick this up, unlikely though that may be.
It was slow in the beginning, like why am i watching this? Then, all of a sudden, great story, shit hitting the fan, getting down to it. I really wanted to see where it was going to go, second season would’ve definitely been worth it.
Guys with a ton of money trying to stop the news, running away around the world to escape scrutiny, possibly funding terrorists to keep their tracks secret. Teams at API trying to find them before the whole world implodes!!! Maybe not the last part, but you can see how crazy it could have been.
It had everything going for it! damn you AMC! damn you!!!
I really liked that show and it seemed like we were just getting to know the characters. They were becoming more dimensional and interesting. I am really, REALLY disappointed to hear this news.
NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! very, very sad and upsetting. One of the greatest shows on TV, ever.
Truxton Spangler was the best character I’ve seen on TV in 10 years.
He really was. I think I read in an interview that this was Michael Cristofer’s (Spangler) first gig in a LONG time, by choice.
His portrayal of Spangler was chilling, yet mesmerizing. I always looked forward to him — as well as Kale (Arliss Howard). I really enjoyed how specific they were with the characters. Everything was spot-on.
Will definitely purchase this series on DVD. Brilliant, but cancelled.
Was willing to give this show a chance, but that abysmal premiere just didn’t do it for me. Gave me no indication of where the show was going or why I wanted to watch, and yet the characters weren’t engaging to make up for the poor writing.
Plus, James Badge Dale just doesn’t have star charisma.
What? Were you watching it in English?
Agree. I’m sorry but in this climate you can not say it gets better – they had two hour to grab my attention and they blew it. I think the lead was a big problem because he truly did not seem to know when he was smart or not. He is all ennui no angst, humorless and tiresome. Recall Tinker Taylor – Alec Guiness was deadpan serious but he reflected such intelligence, poetry, and had such a lived in persona that you longed to know everything about him – this guy I just wanted to get shot. Bravo to AMC for trying this — there is still a need for a great spy series but after Bourne someone has to strike a balance between our primitive need for adrenal and our longing for intelligence — this was a real let down — and the next Three days of the condor – awaits…PS – whatever happened to that epic Norman Mailer novel about the origins of the Cold War – didn’t Coppola have the rights? Long to see that …
I wonder if the show would have turned out better if Jason Horwitch hadn’t been fired over “creative differences” soon after the pilot was picked up?
Considering how bad the pilot was, I can only assume it would have been considerably worse. Good call canning him, but they should have brought in better writers and directors than they did.
So when will there be news about Mad Men being renewed?
