No surprise here: AMC just announced it is renewing breakout hit The Walking Dead for a second season with a 13-episode order. The pickup comes on the heels of Walking Dead‘s record-breaking premiere on October 31, that drew 5.3 million viewers, 3.6 million of them in the 18-49 demographic. In addition to AMC, Fox International Channels also have renewed the series for as second season, following record-breaking premiere ratings in 120 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. “The Dead has spread!” said Charlie Collier, President of AMC. ”No other cable series has ever attracted as many adults 18-49 as ‘The Walking Dead.’ This reaffirms viewers’ hunger for premium television on basic cable.” Even more impressive than its big debut was how well Walking Dead held up in its second airing last night. It drew 4.7 million viewers, only 11% down from the debut which was supported by a massive promotional campaign. In adults 18-49, it averaged 3.3 million viewers, down 8%. Based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, The Walking Dead was written and directed by Frank Darabont who is executive producing with Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. Also joining the series as an executive producer is Charles “Chic” Eglee (Dexter).

Awesome news; this show deserves it.
We should especially appreciate its unflinching take on humanity; its the only cable show that pushes the boundaries as hard as HBO does.
Nice ratings for the show!! But why renew this when they haven’t renewed Mad Men yet?
I think AMC renewed this 1st, obviously because of the ratings and they own the show. Mad Men is produced by Lionsgate and it probably takes a little more time to re-sign everyone including Matthew Weiner and the cast.
Becauze MadMen sux compared to The Walking Dead lol
You’re kidding, rt?
This is good news, but I wish they would hurry up and make a decision about renewing RUBICON soon!
Deafening silence from AMC about Rubicon
That’s exactly what I was thinking when I read this. Not a good sign, but Rubicon is such a great show!
What a great show: production value, script, pacing. Pushes the envelope without feeling sensational. If we lived in zombie land, we would all probably be doing the same thing.
If this was on C-W in it’s current form, I think the massive A18-34 audience it would pull could overcome advertiser and viewer resentment.
The very definition of a no-brainer! (No pun intended.)
Where the hell is the Rubicon renewal?! I don’t give a damn about zombies or vampires or wtf this series is. AMC got me with Rubicon and I’m not interested in anything else there. They should renew Rubicon just as penance for The Prisoner travesty!
Rubicon is so slow and tenseless and terrible, it makes me long for drying paint. And it’s ratings have never crept up above terrible. It’s not coming back. I’m sorry to say. Sorry for you thankful for m.e
Rubicon is an intelectual thriller. Gore and pyrotechnics not required.
Umm, Rubicon, along with Mad Men, have seen their time. Move over little dogs, THE DEAD DOG IS MOVING IN. Also, as for Breaking Bad, yeah… I just call it BAD. LONG LIVE WALKING DEAD!
Deafening silence from AMC about Mad Men. Where is their season 5 pick-up?
Boardwalk Empire and The Walking Dead are the best shows on tv (Boardwalk Empire episode 8 was superb)
I completely agree with you on that.
How many episodes are we getting this season? 6 or 13?
Only 6. So hopefully we don’t have to wait a full year for the 2nd season…
YEP! The zombies are hungry, feed them more eps!
Brains!!!! uuuuuuhhh, braaaaaaaaaaains!
Exciting news, it’s actually a good show and worthy of continuing.
Rare these days.
Excellent news to hear, for this show is as unstoppable as the living dead and it’s one of the most flawless and chilling TV series I’ve ever seen and there’s no wanting to guess upon what to expect in Season Two.
So glad to hear this!
There is an abundance of source material, all of it incredible, so if they rating stay up, this show could go on basically indefinitely without petering out as so many genre-specific shows do.
Just an incredibly well-done show.
And I liked ‘Rubicon’ okay, but I wouldn’t be suprised if it didn’t come back. I actually thought it wrapped up pretty nicely with Spangler getting the 4-leaf clover.
While I will miss Rubicon if it doesn’t come back, I am hooked on The Walking Dead!! What a fantastic show!! (on a side note, I really don’t think Spangler was going to kill himself even though he got the 4-leaf clover)
Fantastic news for a fantastic series. And AMC’s profit from it should help keep Mad Men and Breaking Bad on the air.
Just curious: Where are all the naysayers who last week predicted The Walking Dead would “drop drastically” for its second episode?
Maybe they’re all trapped in a farmhouse, the dead pounding on the windows?
When is AMC going to renew Mad Men??
Anyone know anything of an actor named Wesley French being added for season two?
glad to see it official for figuered with the success and ratings the show was showing it was a given sooner or amc would go for season two.
Great news, love the show so far, now AMC please GIVE US MORE RUBICON.
I saw this show and I was pleasantly surprised at how real the characters are and the cool action of blowing off zombie heads is awesome. I’m not a “zombie” lover because they are disgusting, however I really like this show. The dramatic tone of people resisting on an epic scale reminds me of the original V!!!!
But, the REBOOT of V does not have the intense drama and edgy action of this show. The new V has boring characters that have the depth of card board and just a space ship hanging in the sky and no epic action or even edgy action.
The creators of the new V HAD THE BLUEPRINTS to the original show and all they had to do was update it and they couldn’t even do that right, because they are clueless. I thought that TV was going downhill since the original V from decades ago is so much better than the new show. But, now that I have seen the Walking Dead than I know there are actually people with intelligence running some tv shows.
The one’s in charge of the new V series need to stop sniffing coke and stop giving us b.s. “mother and son after school special” drama that nobody cares about and take notes on The Walking Dead’s: 1.Cool action 2.Epic Scale 3.Life or death drama. 4.Interesting characters.
I agree with your comments about V. I absolutely can’t stand the character of Anna. There is no substance at all to any of the characters. Blah!!
What is with Hollywood these days? No one seems to have any imagination. All they want to do is remake the old movies and TV series. Has anyone seen a remake that’s better than the original?? Nope, didn’t think so.
Battlestar Galactica…..not even close.
Seriously, it’s hard to believe you guys are actually watching this show, which both takes itself way too seriously, and is full of annoying inconsistencies/dumb behavior.
Hello, the lead wakes up from a coma that has obviously lasted several days wearing dry boxers? No catheter? Nothing is wet? Since this sequence had already been done far more effectively in “28 days later,” they could have simply copied that film’s solution of not showing the guy below the waist until after he found some scrubs. This is just sloppy filmmaking (and dumb).
Hello, zombies are attracted by noise, especially gunshots? But no one thinks to try to find or cobble together a silencer? Any idiot that’s seen Godfather 2 knows a pillow or towel wrapped around the gun will help, but no one on this series has thought of that? Spare me.
To work, zombie stories have to either be actually scary (28 days later) or embrace the campy (Zombieland); this show does neither. Pity, as I really wanted to like it.
Wow, impressive nit picking, you’ve convinced me to stop watching. You had me at the catheter.
Well, I guess thats why you are not producing hit TV shows!
The hospital scene is from the comic book which is a tribute to the exact same beginning as Day of the Triffids. 28 Days used the same hospital idea as well.
I agree. Civilians and pizza delivery boys would absolutely know how to make silencers as they’re running for their very lives.
I don’t have much experience in zombie killing though regarding your pillow idea. But I tend to think a zombie won’t sit still as you put a pillow on its face to muffle the shot. It’s also a great visual for a horror-drama, all your leads running around with pillows during a zombie uprising.
That said, I do agree with your last complaint. I could buy the zombie apocalypse, but the lack of “urine soaked boxers,” was too big a leap and I call bullshit on that. He should have been covered in feces as well. I’m sending a letter to Gale Ann Hurd… How could she have missed that?
“Hello, zombies are attracted by noise, especially gunshots? But no one thinks to try to find or cobble together a silencer? Any idiot that’s seen Godfather 2 knows a pillow or towel wrapped around the gun will help, but no one on this series has thought of that? Spare me.”
No, please, spare US. Is there nothing better to do than to pick apart every micro-nuance of a television show/movie? BTW, have you ever tried making a silencer? And by a silencer I mean one that can actually work past point-blank range? There’s a BIG difference between what the movies show and reality; obviously you haven’t grasped that. Here’s hwo the towel/pillow “silencer” works: press the towel/pillow AGAINST your target, then sock the pistol into the towel/pillow and then pull the trigger. And hope for a minimum of noise. Unless you do it exactly like that, you’re not going to have any sound-dampening at all. Or accuracy, for that matter.
But hey, you’ve seen the Godfather, so what they pull off there MUST be reality . . .
Yeah, because this show is full of inconsistencies. There will be nothing left if you dissect it.
yeah so unrealistic that hes not wearing a catheter… kinda like how the premise of the show revolves around a imaginary event of zombies running around killing people stfu and stop worrying about the somthing so little and actually watch the show for the acting suspense and thrill.. its a cable TV show by the way dont be a movie critic on it hah you cant expect it to be perfect. But if you allowed yourself to not try to pick at little things and look for inconsistencies like not wearing a catheter you would be able to see its a very well written, directed and all around good show
YOU LIE: “Since debuting Sunday, October 31, “The Walking Dead” has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18-49 than any other show in the history of cable television.”
THE TRUTH: TRUE BLOOD reached more Adults 18-49 on HBO in Season 3. Why are they saying TWD reached this demo more than any other show “…in the history of cable television”?
Why would Collier renew the series when total viewers for the 2nd episode is less than the 1st and it’s only been out a week? This is too early to renew!!!
This COULD HAVE BEEN a Masterpiece but it’s not!
Maybe they meant world wide. Has True Blood S3 premiered all over the world yet? I doubt its been in 120 countries yet like TWD.
Broke records for AMC, I believe….
AMC = Non-premium
HBO = Premium
They rate them differently
Re: Comment by Ralph Robert Moore
Not to worry, Mad men will remain on the air…it just might not be at AMC.
Is this because of the cost of producing Mad Men? Is it too expensive for AMC? And who would take it if it’s too expensive?
This is good for Frank Darabont- he maybe can’t get hired to direct a feature but now he can pay for his two Los Feliz houses.
AMC, PLEASE RENEW RUBICON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Show can’t be that expensive…
