EXCLUSIVE: Ugly Betty alumna Ana Ortiz is set as the female lead of Fox’s off-cycle comedy pilot Outnumbered, which is being directed by Larry Charles. Inspired by the BBC sitcom, Outnumbered revolves around one set of parents who are often overwhelmed by their three children. Ortiz will play the mom, Sue Tulley, a frazzled, at-her-wit’s-end, working mother
of three, a multi-tasker by
necessity and somewhat of a hot-head. The project is being produced by 20th TV, Chernin Entertainment and Hat Trick Prods, the British company behind the original series. Like fellow Ugly Betty co-star Becki Newton, Ortiz was tapped for a new project, ABC’s drama pilot True Blue, shortly after the network announced the end of Betty‘s four-year run. She has been in demand ever since, with several projects in development for next fall trying to attach her as a star. Ortiz is with Gersh, manager Geordie Frey and attorney Brad Small.

Anyone know if she’s playing a white character? Are we saying a latin actress as a white character can appeal to primetime audiences but not a latin actress as a latin character? Especially if this is ensemble…
in any case, good for her. she deserves it.
Heads up from someone who watched the UK series.
It’s entertaining, for a while, but trust me it’ll get stale pretty quick.
What are the odds it’ll be like Malcolm in (+ The Middle).
Shut up! “We are saying” that she got the lead part. You are saying all that other ish about race.
Three kids? Hmm. Cosby (until they added that annoying little sprite). Malcolm in the Middle. My Wife & Kids. The Ty Burrell/Julie Bowen part of Modern Family. Roseanne. Home Improvement. My THREE Sons.
But they had to go to a British sitcom for inspiration. Riiiiight.
Don’t think Outnumbered is like any other sitcom you’ve seen. If they follow the British pattern and find the right child stars it will be like nothing else on TV. You’ll see.
She’s great; luved the whole spiritualness of Bettys family in that show.
If anything her “latin-ness” probably GOT her cast in this role. anyone else think this choice is playing to the success of Sofia Vergara in Modern Family?
I just read the pilot script and it’s definitely trying to strike the same chords as ABC has.
I’ll be honest, Sofia is definitely grabs my attention as an 18-34 male. And Anna did too on Ugly Betty. She’s mega hot and appeals to our country’s continued Hispanification.
how did you read the pilot script? Have they cast the kids yet?
