Angela Bassett has come on board the drama project One Police Plaza, which is in development at ABC. The project, from ABC Studios and studio-based Mark Gordon Co., centers on New York City’s first female commissioner, to be played by Bassett. Linda Fairstein and Kenneth L. Solarz are writing the script and will executive produce One Police Plaza with Gordon and Deborah Spera. Bassett, repped by Gersh and Lighthouse, will next be seen in Jumping the Broom and Green Lantern. On TV, she most recently co-starred on the final season of ER.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Angela is a great actress. It’s unfortunate circumstances beyond her control have inhibited her from sharing her talent more often. Congrats to her.
I wish I knew how to decipher your message. Do you mean her color has stopped her from getting better jobs? In any case, I’m glad for her too but she’s like so many other talented actresses who have to turn to TV for work.
Excellent. I hope it does well. I will watch it.
eh….shes ok at best.
AB is a beautiful woman and fantastic actress. This project is akin to Laura Linney starring in the Big C. With more actresses of Laura L.’s and Angela B.’s caliber, television might stop being such a wasteland.
Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Weeds, Modern Family, Treme, Nurse Jackie, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The C Word, Californication all current. The Wire, Sopranos, Sex and the City not so far behind. Yeah, television has really been a wasteland, devoid of top drawer talent now for so long. Open your eyes. Or, change the channel.
Fine, NETWORK television will stop being such a wasteland. You only named one show that’s on network television.
As for the 9 current cable shows that you’ve mentioned, some don’t live up to the hype (Boardwalk Empire – It’s supremely self-indulgent, and most of it feels like “been there, done that” from better gangster movies. Treme is too boring to watch. I won’t critique them all; let’s agree to disagree on some of the others.)
Overall, that’s a very small number of good shows floating in sea of dreck.
Anyway, Angela Bassett is fantastic and I can’t wait to see her new show.
Incredible actress, but it’s that cute sort of dimple action she’s got that will lead me to tune in…her acting sorcery will save anything, smart choice
what do you mean circumstances beyond her control? she is very talented but she has also made specific choices, at one point she had everyone willing to share her talents.
What are you even talking about? Are you denying the dearth of roles for 40+ actresses and actresses of color?
@Anon
Lets just say you and I have quite different interpretations of how things work in Hollywood. According to you, she had lots of offers but declined to accept them. If that’s what you and others have to tell yourselves to get through the day with a clear conscience then by all means.
Ok at best huh…get a life. She’s one of the beat actresses of her generation.
I hope she gets a career resurrection with the tv series and Green Lantern. She’s an excellent actress who deserves far more work than she’s getting now. Unfortunately the stacks are against her because of her color, age and gender.
re “the stacks..” you said it. Hollywood has had no idea what to do with this woman for YEARS, despite her powerhouse performances in everything she puts her hand to. She should have enjoyed a film career a la Cate Blanchett at the very least.
Actresses of color get offered the worst roles – and many feel grateful to get them.
Legend has it that AB turned down Monster’s Ball because she didn’t want to debase herself with that exploitative sex scene (which made HB a household name…)
Angela Bassett can actually act, but Hollywood doesn’t have anything to offer her (I mean, she had to do a Tyler Perry movie – come on!) Like you, I hope she gets a career resurrection.
This saddens me ! Angela Bassett deserves a bigger film career ( or at least a decent movie career). Black actresses and other actresses of color are mostly ignored by White Hollywood. After her beyond brilliant turn in What’s Love Got To Do With It, she should be having a Cate Blanchett , Annette Bening , Marisa Tomei, or even a Rachel Weisz type of film career (actresses that are not box-office superstars, but work regularly) .
I posted my comment re: Cate Blanchett before I saw yours. I completely agree!
LOL So, after Mark Gordon does his little n-word “homage” to Blazin’ Saddles, he now produces a show with a black person in charge of law enforcement. Gee, wonder what inspired him to cast like that?
Maybe he’ll try to work in a scene where she holds herself hostage?
I love Bassett but she’s better than this.
Sure, she’s better than this, but I’ll bet this is the best thing she’s been offered. Let’s hope it’s a great show despite Mark Gordon’s past mistakes.
