EXCLUSIVE: Relavity Media is in talks with director Antoine Fuqua and Gerard Butler to come aboard Afterburn, an adaptation of the Red 5 Comic title by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood. The scifi saga takes place a year after a solar flare burns half the surface of a planet, and treasure hunters return to retrieve what’s left of value.

The script was written by Into the Blue scribe Matt Johnson, and I heard that they will bring aboard A Man Apart scribe Christian Gudegast to do a rewrite. The film is being produced by Neal Moritz, Tobey Maguire, Toby Jaffe and Jenno Topping. Fuqua is coming off Brooklyn’s Finest, while Butler just wrapped the title role in the Marc Forster-directed Machine Gun Preacher.

One of the better action scripts of the year. Hopefully Fuqua wont mess it up.
These two deserve each other…
I wonder who will get the role of the tough, petite, hispanic female soldier with her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail?
If not Michelle Rodriguez, how about Melanie Diaz???
Let’s do the math on this one….
2 horrible screenwriters + horrible producer (Moritz) + no longer bankable actor (Butler) + director who’s not directed a good film in almost a decade + comic book no one has ever heard of = BOMB
That was easy.
P.S. Anyone else getting tired of Neal Moritz producing movies under a company called “Original Film”, when absolutely NOTHING he does is original AT ALL? It’s all adaptations, sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. He should consider a production company name change. Seriously.
That’s all of Hollywood, honey… Moritz ain’t the only stooge.
douche much?
If you’re making statements such as “No longer bankable Gerard Butler”, you’re just showing your ignorance. Next time, research your subject before showing your lack of knowledge.
Fuqua isn’t the best action director out there and he doesn’t work from the best scripts, BUT I always seem to have a rollicking good time when I see his flicks.
So good on him for putting fun stuff up on the Big Screen consistently. It’s also nice to see his success as the only black director doing A-lis, money-making action flicks these days.
What the hell happened to F. Gary Gray?
He directed Law Abiding Citizen. F. Gary does a lot of commercial work as well.
Butler’s last four movies opened with 20 million or more. They might not have all been good but he’s still bankable… This sounds good to me.
Fuqua is a good director but getting axed from “True Blue” better known as American Gangster hurt his momentum and confidence in my opinion. I hope he doesn’t go forward with the Tupac biopic either. He can’t afford another Brooklyn’s Finest. All he needs is the right project and he’ll be back on top. Not sure this is it though but it’s better than the rumored projects associated with his name.
I’ve read the Tupac script. I would be a mistake for him to do. First off, it’s not good. Second, if the movie succeeds, they’ll praise the actor; if it fails, they’ll blame the director. A lose/lose job for Fuqua.
@Bill Johnson
As you stated the Tupac project is a lose/lose for Fuqua. I’m sorry but Tupac’s life belongs on cable TV not the big screen. People have attempted to compare him to bigger than life personalities from the world of music and political activism. Those comparisons are simply not valid enough to register at the box office. Again, I want to see Fuqua win but he’s got to pick better projects or he’ll become yesterday’s news if he hasn’t already.
@Mr. Oldham, Presume
Brooklyn’s Finest was miscast in my opinion. Fuqua’s attempts to assist Wesley Snipes and create a role for his good friend Che “Bone” Sloan didn’t help a weak unbelievable story much either. Despite being shot in the Pink Houses in Brooklyn it felt as if someone alien and unfamiliar with the terrain and made this film. There’s a lot of other issues I had with the project but the reality is I don’t know one person who thought it was a great film. All I’ve done is try to figure out why. He can do much better and he will if he focuses on telling great stories.
I’m sorry what was so wrong with Brooklyn’s Finest?
Fuqua has been a little diva since he got fired from End of Days. Director Jail.
Since they put the remake of Mad Max on hold I think this is the right time to do this project. I hope they get it green lighted and fast tracked. Sounds like good fun. And I like Butler he is a good actor and I hope he has finally decided to leave the romantic comedy genre for good. I am looking forward to seeing him in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus with Ralph Fiennes.
Fuqua is a talented director with a good eye and an excellent manner with actors & writers, but he has had a string of productions fall apart around him lately and the finger-pointing (deserved or not) has all been in his direction. I hope he can pull it together this time.
LOL oh I wonder! Michelle Rodriguez, obviously. But even moreso since she’s worked with Moritz like 4 times before.
This one will blow.
TRAINING DAY was a great film. But how many failures does that buy you in this town? Fuqua’s movies since then were:
Brooklyn’s Finest
Shooter
King Arthur
Tears of the Sun
Those last two alone must have lost well over $100 million.
Why do I feel as if I’ve seen movies like this before………….
brooklyn’s finest is one of the most subtle, refined look into a reality no one wants to see… there could be nominations on this one
