EXCLUSIVE: The girls are rising on The Big Bang Theory this season. The CBS comedy — which just upped costar Melissa Rauch to a full-fledged series regular — has rewarded Mayim Bialik with a similar bump. The former Blossom star made her debut as Sheldon’s quasi-girlfriend in last season’s finale and returned this fall on a recurring basis. Like Rauch, Bialik’s new deal is for this season only and — unlike the show’s central quintet — doesn’t call for her to appear in all episodes produced. Still, her promotion brings the number of female regulars on Big Bang to 3, improving the balance between the sexes on the comedy series which has 4 male regulars. Michael Ausiello will be contributing to Deadline.com and Movieline.com as he preps for the January launch of a new TV-centric website.

meh, not really a fan of her character. She takes Sheldon’s amusing characteristics and takes them too far.
She’s more like an insane female version of Data from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. She’s great!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Big Bang Theory!!!!!
I really enjoyed this show the 1st few seasons. Now it’s all mainstream ( The new friends? ) . IMO the best part was because the guys were socially award. The show is losing it’s edge and I can take Mayim Bialik in small doses but that’s about it.
Yea, this blows. It’s totally ruining the show. Sheldon as he was what made this show the great sitcom it is ~ not sure why the producers felt the need to change this. Now Sheldon is moving towards being just like everyone else. Too bad.
I wouldn’t mind the character if she was played by a better actress, and I’m not a fan of them adding so many new characters, but at least both contracts are just for this season.
The show doesn’t need another Sheldon…. and an unfunny one at that. Was hoping she’d be gone soon.
^ Agreed. Her character makes me uncomfortable. I hope they change her personality so it’s not so over the top.
Ehh…I like to see her interact with Penny, but I’m kind of tired of her friendship with Sheldon.
I LOVE her on the show. The conversations between her character and Sheldon are some of the funniest ever. I think she adds a lot to the show.
Too bad. I almost turned the last episode off b/c I didn’t like the character or her interaction with Sheldon. Think I’ll be tuning out.
I loved Mayim — back in the 90s. Not so sure I embrace this latest move.
I’m wondering if any other folks believe this series is ridiculously overrated? I mean, I always find the writing to be “meh” when compared to comedy shows like “Scrubs” or “Community”. Am I off in my way of thinking or is Big Bang the greatest thing since sliced bread?
It’s a bit samey and it’s not really as clever or complex as other shows. But the premise is great and it’s a good big, “popular” network sitcom.
Ofcourse the series is terribly overrated. It started off as a funny series about nerds. But since season 3, it’s become the Sheldon show and replaced most of it’s usually smart gags from the first two seasons with stupid things like Sheldon getting drunk. Worst of all it’s this and dreck like Two and a Half Men and Shit My Dad Says which gets high ratings while gems like Community and Parks & Recreation are fighting it out each season.
I don’t think it’s fair to compare Big Bang with Scrubs, one of the funniest and cleverest shows of all time that usually flew under the radar. It has some very funny moments but it is no Scrubs (or 2½ Men, for that matter, which I believe is CURRENTLY the funniest show on TV, and which at least has people tuning in to watch it now).
I don’t know why Sheldon needed a girlfriend (who’s not a girlfriend). To balance out the couplings? Because of Kaley Cuoco’s broken leg? To isolate Leonard into watching EVERYONE ELSE in a relationship except him? I think Raj’s girlfriend will be far more interesting to watch. And I like Melissa Rauch’s Bernadette far more than Mayim’s Amy.
Once I start watching a show I rarely get off it. But could this be an attempt by the producers to attract more women viewers (at the risk of alienating their base)? Because as we know, that ALWAYS works. (sarcasm mode off)
I am surprised at Shit getting renewed but it’s the Shatner Show and I will watch it just for the things coming out of his mouth. And yet both Canadian Will Sasso and the very talented Nicole Sullivan provide some excellent comic fodder for him as well, not including Tim Bagley as the gay fall guy. It’s not great TV but I can’t help watch it.
Community? Meh. Last week’s episode (bottle episode??) is easily the worst one ever. If it gets worse, I may well turn it off.
And are you telling me that the putrid Outsourced (which I could not stand after 2-3 episodes) is better than Parks and Recreation??? Seriously? Are American viewers THAT retarded?
Big Bang is OK……every show isn’t funny every episode….I like Outsourced because of Rebecca Hazlewood (whoo!) and Diedrich Bader (crazy!). Community is pretty good but not always funny and Parks and Recreation is soooo boring and unfunny, can’t watch it. I liked Better Off Ted much better than P & R. It was way funnier.
I can’t stand her character. She isn’t funny. The actress is bad. She isn’t needed. This is a huge mistake.
Really??? My friends and I think she is the best addition to the show this season. I LOVE her with Sheldon, and also with Penny. I’m so happy about this news. Mayim, ignore all the haters on this board…you have made me laugh out loud so many times this season. Keep up the great work.
I think she’s the funniest character on the show right now. The guys have gotten so formulaic that I can predict everyone’s reactions long before they happen. It’s good to have fresh blood in there – especially one so overbearingly awkward. Sheldon rarely attempts to succumb to social mores just to fit in. Amy, though, needs to “fit in” so that Sheldon’s friends accept her. I think this is the genius of the current arc. I agree with Chris Cosby – she is like DATA, trying to assess what makes humans react the way they do, but being less observant (and arguably less human), her misguided attempts at normalcy leave me in stitches every time.
“What is the circumference of your areolas?”
Prediction:
“Evil” Will Wheaton manipulates the two of them into a public kiss.
Amy then takes a research assignment in a remote region of the world, and returns in six months…married to her hunky assistant, whom she bonded with when the power went out and they had to “go native” to generate heat.
Crushed, Sheldon throws himself back into his work, becoming even more remote, and the guys have to throw a “social intervention,” bringing back characters who have appeared in the first four seasons.
Oh come on people…
It’s like Frasier/Lilith on Cheers, this is a good sign.
TBBT really needed to expand on the cast…
Both regular’s are welcome solid additions to further propel this Big Bang Theory …
Welcome back, Blossom.
I like Bernadette as she sates the leg hopping dog Howard but Amy is like Sheldon’s twin sister by another father-similar DNA but not ironically funny. We love Sheldon and we are hanging out for him to shank Penny even in a dream sequence…lol Shamy feels like a pair of newted cats.
Awesome news she’s laugh out funny
They made a good decision !!!!!
I always liked her on Blossom. Haven’t caught her on this though. Excited to tune in. LOVE Rauch! Worked with her before- she may be the nicest person ever. Plus, she had everyone on set in stiches with her ad libs. I saw her last season on Bang Theory and thought she was fantastic, glad to hear she’s continuing on it. Kudos to both.
Worked with her? Are you a director? Actor? Producer? I know little about her. Dish!!! How does she get along with the rest of the cast?
I don’t think the actress works in the part. Or the character simply doesn’t work for me. The character makes the show ever more of a cartoon rather than going the other way, which I think would’ve helped more.
I preferred Sheldon’s groupie from the other season. They dropped her character way too soon. I dug the humor in Sheldon’s total obliviousness to the totally hot babe and her overtures, and her being totally dismissive of the other nerds, and her rivalry with Penny.
But Sheldon’s one true love connection/missed connection was with Leonard’s mom played by Christine Baranski. They had the best chemistry of any couple on any TV show in years.
She preferred the busboy
Talk about burying the lead, Michael Ausiello back on a big stage, nice!
She is not funny and unneeded. I had hoped season 4 would be a return in form when I was disappointed with season 3 but it doesn’t look like it if her character will be around for the rest of the year.
I can’t stand her character. Makes me very uncomfortable. Wrong move here. Wrong on so many levels.
I can’t stand her character. She’s annoying, not funny and I can barely watch episodes with her in it. I hope she’s leaves the show soon or I’ll have to stop watching it.
… It is just a matter of reading the comments, most of the girls likes Amy…the producers are trying to attract women to see the show
Its like they forgot the essentials of the term geek.
I’m also not a big fan of her character… just not really funny IMO. Bernadette, on the other hand, I think is hilarious because she reminds me of Georgette Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore show.
