EXCLUSIVE: Director Baz Luhrmann is expanding his search for Daisy Buchanan as he moves closer to committing to The Great Gatsby as his next film. Deadline revealed recently that Luhrmann did a workshop of the screenplay he wrote with Craig Pearce, with Leonardo DiCaprio reading Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire reading Nick Carraway, and The Town‘s Rebecca Hall reading Daisy Buchanan. Luhrmann wants those guys to star, but he’s casting a wider net on Daisy. I’m told that Hall is in the running, but that he’s got a bunch of actresses and wants to see how they read with DiCaprio. Luhrmann likes to work shop his scripts, and this should play out over the next two weeks, in New York. This might be hard for some of the actresses, who are shooting movies abroad. Among the names I’ve heard on Baz’s list: Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson. Aside from those names, I’ve heard that Luhrmann is also sweet on Natalie Portman, the Black Swan star who is in wide demand and recently was courted for Gravity and then dropped out of Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, a role for which Lionsgate likes Johansson and Bradley Cooper. Daisy was played in the last film by Mia Farrow, and I thought she was a bit flighty and delicate and not as manipulative as she was in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. The film is set up at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Blake Lively? So she can talk with a mouth full mush as Daisy.
What is up with all of the Blake Lively hate?? She’s a beautiful talented actress, which is a super-rare combination in itself.
SMH.
Yes, she is enough talented for gossip girl and teenage movies, but not for this type of project. Come on, she is very pretty but her dramatic chops are limited to pouting & blinking..Kristen Stewart totally have that shit figure out & had more talent…
Personally, i think someone like Natalie Portman or Abbie Cornish should take this role..even MIchelle Williams, which is so underrated as actress, nobody can forgive her Dawson creek’s origin..Oh slutty Jen, you were awesome
I hope Rebecca Hall lands the role.
Settle down folks. I’ve seen every movie Rebecca Hall has starred in. In each one she’s the least interesting part. Her amazing track record of successes means she’ll always work…but can you at least leave her out of the leading lady roles? Watching her try to be romantic is like watching a 7 year-old stomp around in her mom’s heels and make-up.
If Baz is looking for dialect he should clearly go with Cornish, Williams or Seyfried. They’re by far the most talented.
I love Luhrmann, but if he casts half the girls on that list my interest level will drop to near-zero.
Hall, Cornish, Portman, and especially Williams are just plain boring choices.
Johannson is hugely overrated.
I say Seyfried or Lively. Or why not reunite Romeo with Juliet and cast Claire Danes?
because no one likes claire danes
I love Claire Danes.
I love this idea — CLAIRE DANES for the win.
You and Hugh.
But she has those lovely Latisse eyelashes!
AHAHAHHAHaHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
Claire Danes — BEST IDEA EVER. Please make this happen.
This is just plain awful. Blake Lively, are you kidding me? Most of these women arent even that attractive. Not to mention only about 3 on this list have actual talent- Scarlett, Natalie, Kiera.
Please, God, not Kidman.
I wouldn’t put it past Baz to ‘Benjamin Button’ Nicole Kidman for the role.
Honestly, I can see Lively bring picked for this before most of these girls. She’s got manipulative yet sweet down, espically with her upcoming role in Green Lantern, which will provide her extra exposure and increase her star power which will help the Great Gatsby. The only other person I can see taking on the role would be Seyfried. I don’t think any of the other girls have it in them to play daisy. Johanssen turns too many people off, Hall is too unknown, Portman will have bigger movies to do, Mulligan has had quite a few box office bombs lately so I don’t know how fast she will be given leading lady role yet. My pick is Lively, then Seyfried, and actually I believe that Emma Stone was once a name being thrown around and I think she would made due very well with this role.
I don’t get how anyone could want to see Lively in this. Where are the days when we looked for serious talent and not just a pretty face. Like..someone who could actually act and hold their own on stage, not just someone who ‘makes a buck’. I’m so disappointed in the movie business these days. First casting Timberlake in undeserved roles…now Lively. What’s next?!!
i know right?!! like when are we gonna go back to the glory days when this business was based on good old fashioned hard work, sound morals, and fair-is-fair deservedness??? i miss those days! i miss the 90s!!!!!~
I want to have your baby.
OMG and i want to be godmother to your baby!!
I think that Blake Lively is sooooo overrated! she has a limited range, but a wonderful tits, so that should be it..her plastic surgeon was genious!
talent aside, and since when has lively proven she can carry a film at the box office? she has some team working overtime for her to let on this impression because she’s the least qualified and eye-roll inducing candidate on that list.
I agree completely, Lively please. Michelle Williams a big yes, quality actress has paid her dues. Natlie Portman another yes, even Amanda Seyfried but I’m not sure she has the chops. Rebecca Hall just isn’t Daisy, and all the other actresses are as overrated as Lively.
who finds Michelle Williams attractive, I don’t know why she gets so many roles. Amanda Seyfried looks too much like Dakota Fanning
Speaking of, why not… oh forget it.
I like Keira for this. Unlike some on this list, she can act and act out too. We need someone with some back bone.
Well unless is going to workshop in London Keira and Michelle are not going to be tested since both are busy one filming and one reharsing for a play.
ughh, so sick of of hearing these same boring names tossed about for every decent female role. I’d love to see someone unexpected as Daisy.
rachel mcadams hello!
How about Carey Mulligan in the mix?
She can easily look the part of Daisy, speak without her British accent, and she is a super talented actress with a twinkle in her eyes.
I can see why the general consensus is that Lively isn’t a serious actress (Gossip Girl isn’t exactly Sophie’s Choice), but you have to give her credit for at least trying. She gave two great, baity supporting performances within a year (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, The Town), although she probably could have scored silly romcom-leads instead. She was on Alfonso Cuarón’s shortlist and now she is on Baz Luhrmann’s. She must do something right if these remarkable directors consider her.
Yeah, she gets points taking the teeth-cutting roles.
Rebecca Hall is a wonderful actress, but she’s a bit too ungainly for the role of Daisy — she’d tower over DiCaprio.
Abbie Cornish would be my top pick — she’s beautiful, charismatic and incredibly talented. She lit up the screen in Bright Star.
Tower over Leo? Leo is over 6 foot. WTF?
Is it me, or are there about 5 actresses who get considered for EVERY role (Portman, Johansson, Knightley, Cornish and Seyfriend)?
P.s. I like the idea of Di Caprio playing Jay Gatsby. The way he is going, in 20 years, Di Caprio will be spoken about as the greatest actor to ever grace cinema.
OMG, I`m so shocked that 6th actress considered for every role, Noomi Rapace, isn`t on the list. She should fire her publicit for forgetting to submit her name to production 10,00000000.
THE GREAT GATSBY is a brilliant, fragile, and evocative piece. Fitzgerald and Hemingway have never been brought to the screen properly. Luhrmann has a camp mentality. Good luck.
ari’s is the most relevant comment so far. The appeal of “Gatsby” is in the storytelling, not the story, as two previous features and one TV version (the best parts of which were the Fitzgerald quotes) have lamentably shown. Daisy is an idealization, not a person, and film adaptations crumble just like Gatsby when they attempt to possess her.
Ms Portman would be perfect- Jake Glynenhall would make the best Nick (he is youthful) Toby Maguire would be better as the mechanic husband.
I like Natalie Portman, but is there a movie that she’s NOT in consideration for? Just wondering . . .
Okay, okay, considering that Daisy is supposed to be the epitome of a twig-like flapper (with more than a little neurosis), Portman *is* a logical choice, as is Knightley.
And Blake Lively? Ut, no. She can’t act.[1] And if you were going to look into the Gossip Girl stable, Leighton Meester would be a better choice because a) she’s really a blonde and much more importantly, b) she can act.
— Rob
[1] Same goes for Scarlett Johansson.
Leighton also has a ton of charisma onscreen and a wide range. He acting style would go perfectly with Luhrmanns directing style.
Why not Claire Danes? She’s still fresh-faced and pretty enough to look delicate like Daisy should but has the acting chops to give her the depth and complexity that the novel does. And we already know she and Leo have chemistry. Not to mention all the other girls are just everywhere and it’s geting tiresome. Surely Hollywood has more to offer than them?
claire danes fresh-faced!? that old gas-bag is doing commercials for Lastese because her eyelashes are falling out!!!!
Claire Danes is fresh-faced and pretty, and has chemistry!???! No one likes that smug gas-bag, plus she’s doing Lastese commercials because her eyelashes are falling out. Call now!
Daisy should be around Gatsby’s age – in her late 20′s, early 30′s. They have a ‘history’ together.
Myrtle, her husbands ‘kept woman’ should be younger than Daisy..
Rachel McAdams is the best choice for Daisy, and she’s not even on this list. (Good call, NPR.) Of these actresses, the only ones who could pull this off without being bland are Hall and Cornish. Cornish was brilliant in Bright Star. Blake Lively is a major fail.
It has to be Amanda Seyfreid! or Michelle Williams….the others SUCK! Plain and simple
I’d like to see newcomer Emily Meade to play the role of Daisy. She looks the part and can handle the role. Just saw her as Pearl on Boardwalk Empire and she was incredibly captivating. As far as star power, DiCaprio has enough to pull in big bucks. Meade would be an excellent artistic choice.
Selma Blair or Reese Witherspoon?
Or while we’re at it, why not that girl from Blossom?
ROTFLOL
Mmmmmmm….Serena Van Der Woodsen, please. So yummy…
Cornish is a great pick, but Michelle W has a face just made for flapper page boy haircut 1920′s look–Portman could be ‘wispy and manipulative’ but can come off too blunt. Blake, nix that!
