EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has found his Daisy Buchanan. He has officially given the starring role in The Great Gatsby to Carey Mulligan, the Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Never Let Me Go star who’ll play the manipulative heroine when Luhrmann starts production on his adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic.
Mulligan was on the reception line for The Fashion Council Awards in New York when she got the call on her cell phone from Luhrmann, just a few minutes ago. She burst into tears on the red carpet in front of Karl Lagerfield and Anna Wintour. This all occurred shortly after Luhrmann showed the audition footage to Sony Pictures Entertainment execs Amy Pascal and Doug Belgrad, who were impressed by Mulligan’s command of the character played in the 1974 film by Mia Farrow.
Mulligan was a late entrant to an elite list of actresses that Luhrmann met with while he conducted readings with Leonardo DiCaprio, who’ll play Jay Gatsby. Tobey Maguire is expected to play his friend, Nick Carraway, who narrates the tale. No word yet on who’ll play the other major roles, Daisy’s husband Tom, their social companion Jordan Baker, Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson and her gas station owner husband George.
Luhrmann delivered the message to Deadline, and gave me the above photo he took of Mulligan during rehearsals, when she was in Daisy Buchanan mode on November 2. “The results from the workshop process on The Great Gatsby have been very encouraging,” he told Deadline. “There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”
The 25-year old actress was nominated for an Academy Award last year for her work in the Lone Scherfig-directed coming of age tale An Education.
It was a busy day for Luhrmann who spoke at the funeral of Dino De Laurentiis along with the likes of David Lynch and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Luhrmann became close with the charismatic producer when they tried to mount an epic version of Alexander the Great that was to star DiCaprio. The project halted when a rival film with Oliver Stone and Colin Farrel made it into production first. Luhrmann spoke at length over how moved he was that De Laurentiis made his own family such a part of his life despite his thriving producing career, something Luhrmann made sure to emulate as he carved his own path. Luhrmann wore a red tie, in keeping with the De Laurentiis family wish.

I can not believe that anybody is putting up cash for this diaster. Carry Mulligan? What, is Roseanne Barr busy? Somebody needs to explain the book to Buzzy before the Titanic leaves Liverpool.
I am dying to know what comparisons can be made between Carey and Roseanne Barr. You also might want to learn to spell her name correctly – you’re going to be seeing it a lot.
Hahaha, that’s exactly what I was thinking. Roseanne Barr? Are you serious? LMAO
hi Joe
Obviously you did not read the disclaimer before posting
“Comments On Deadline Hollywood are monitored. So don’t go off topic, don’t impersonate anyone, don’t get your facts wrong, and don’t bore me”
How’s that? Which rule did he violate? Seems to me he hit the nail on the headcheese.
Are you blind? Carey is the perfect choice for this role… She is so beautiful and looks nothing like Roseanne – you will regret mentioning Rosanne when Carey wins an oscar for this role!
I HEART CAREY I HEART CAREY I HEART CAREY!!!!!!!!
And here I thought I was the only one who had seen the Mulligan/Barr likeness and connection. Perhaps you and I know each other from work at the Head Up Ass Institute.
@Joe -From the list of actresses who auditioned for the role of Daisy Buchanan, it is my opinion that Carey Mulligan is the perfect choice. If you had made the effort to read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Gatsby” and then watched any of Mulligan’s performances before posting your dribble, you would have agreed. It’s clear you’re just seeking attention and have no clue what you’re talking about.
That being said, personally I think Baz Luhrmann will do a fine job of adapting “Gatsby” for the screen, I’m excited to see the results.
Well said, Joe.
There is nothing wrong with the original and Luhrman has a lot of gall to do a remake when practically all of that cast is still living. There are so many other novels, plays, and scads of source material out there. Why not do something original? And enough with the remakes!!!And of course there was nothing wrong with Franco Zefferelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet but that didn’t stop B.L.from making the worst, most blasphemous adaptation of a Shakespeare work ever filmed.
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa! Ok first off many remakes are made while the actors themselves are still alive. Lets see here how long do you think talkies have been around there kiddo? On another note, Romeo + Juliet is a cult classic, and it highlights other facets of Shakespeare’s work that the first lacked. It placed Shakespeare in a modern setting, and though I’m not the biggest Claire Danes fan I thought it was well done. On the whole topic of Roseanne Barr…..really? You think a 25 year old british actress that actually has talent is in any way correlated with a loud-mouthed over the hill television mistake……perhaps a psychological examination before you speak again. Just a suggestion.
I think Carey is perfect for the role. She’s beautiful in the shot above and she says so much with her eyes. She’s a truly talented actress who does subtlety so well. Few actors can give a convincing performance when there’s no big emotional outbursts required, or nudity and/or excessive foul language to distract from their poor performances. Carey can convey a great deal of emotion through subtle body language and facial expressions to the point that you forget your watching a performance and it just seems real. Obviously….I love her talent. Congratulations, Carey!
Yes!
I can’t believe it. Carey is exactly who I suggested when the story first came out, and Carey was not even in the mix.
Great choice, Baz!
I am right with you! I was disappointed when it didn’t appear she was in the running for the part. I couldn’t be more excited! I think youth is really the most important aspect to Daisy, and she needs to be childlike but also with an ability to be extremely cold – I don’t think anyone could pull that off better – Way to go Baz!
Just remember, Carey: don’t blink.
Hahaha – love this comment.
terrific choice. what an amazingly talented and beautiful actress she is. Carey could be one of the best of her generation by the time she hangs it up. She was the only thesp that I found interesting in Wall Street II, a barely passable film. Her other work? Marvelous.
great choice. beautiful pic. can’t wait for this movie.
perfect choice
carey is cute at best lol
GREAT, now I just hope it will boost her profile enough to land her her second Oscar nomination this year for the criminally underrated ‘Never let me go’.
‘Never let me go’ is still haunting me. Absolutely blown away by her performance in that film. She is heads and shoulders above the rest of her peers.
Serious question as a new writer:
Are all of Fitzgerald’s works in the public domain now? Isn’t it 75 years?
What’s going on with The Beautiful and the Damned?
Anyone? Thanks so much.
Don’t know about your first question. But the Beautiful and the Damned was supposed to be made as a movie this fall with Keira Knightley playing Zelda. However the production company had some problem financing the movie so it not happening at this point.
Carey’s an inspired choice. She can play flighty and naive manipulator but also seductress. As another poster recently stated Daisy’s an ideal rather than an actual character and I believe she can encompass this. I’m also confident she’ll play well off DiCaprio. As for the remaining roles, Tom Hardy would make an interesting Tom and I could see easer Racheal McAdams or Rebecca Hall as Baker. Very excited by this project. Good luck Baz.
I was really hoping for Amanda Seyfried in the role, but I think that Mulligan will do a fine job with the role.
I haven’t seen any of her performances in movies et al. but after seeing her in a single interview from the Young Hollywood Roundtable recently, I really find her adorable; esp. after she fangirled over A.C. Slater haha. I don’t like Leo as an actor but I find the combination with Carey intriguing. I’ll see this film.
I don’t think we’re supposed to like Daisy (just my interpretation of the source material).
I saw that interview and she is so adorable and funny. She starred in an unforgettable , highly rated and critically acclaimed Doctor Who-Light episode in 2007 called “Blink” where the Doctor was barely there. It was completely incumbent upon Carey to have the audience connect with her Sally Sparrow character quickly and she knocked it out of the park. See “An Education” and “Never Let Me Go” for more award winning performances.
THAT was Carey in Blink?! (and hels he own with the prodigious Sarsgard?! Please. The lady’s got chops–nobody around today comes even close. Intrigued about her Daisy though… Daisy’s not a likable character–well, none of them are! LOL!
Kiera in Never Let Me Go seems to fit the role more. But break the rules CM–you rule & you deserve it!!!
I hate this casting. She is barely cute. Ugh. And I don’t even think she is that good an actress. Blah.
And what do you look like? And your girlfriends? You’re an idiot, in my opinion. She’s lovely, and graceful, and by all appearances seriously talented. Go see a Katherine Heigel comedy. You’ll be quite pleased.
Disliking someone doesn’t make them an idiot. He’s allowed his opinion, however crudely he expresses it.
Everyone is so quick to throw out snarky comments and name-calling from behind the anonymity of their computer monitor.
“Everyone is so quick to throw out snarky comments and name-calling from behind the anonymity of their computer monitor.”
Ooh look everybody, it’s trite commentary from 1997!
I’m just messin’ with you.
P.S. What do you mean “you people?”
What do *you* mean, “you people”?
She is far too young for the role and I imagine the age difference between her and Leo will be quite distracting. Blech.
Ummm…in the book Daisy is early 20′s, so Carey’s age is just fine. She’s a marvelous actress so hopefully she can play the seductress. Leo is a bit old to play Gatsby, but whatever. Would have preferred James McAvoy as Nick Carraway myself. As for further casting: like Tom Hardy as Tom Buchanan, Ginnifer Goodwin as Myrtle, and Rebecca Hall or Keira Knightley as Jordan Baker.
I hadn’t thought of James McEvoy as Nick, but it’s a great suggestion. I also like the idea of Ryan Gosling in the role, too. Tom Hardy as Tom Buchanan is excellent. He matches the physicality of the role, and when required, he’s got a swagger about him and a glint in his eye that just says arrogant, self-entitled a-hole. Not that I think Hardy is like that in real life, but I’ve seen him give off that vibe in movie roles before.
Excellent choice.
This is the best news ever!!!! Carey Mulligan is the perfect choice…. GOOD WORK BAZ!!
Has Hollywood completely run out of new ideas? It seems there is a new “remake, reboot” every other day.
Sometimes, just very occasionally the right thing happens. This is clearly on of those times. She has the looks, the wiles, and the style to own this more than anyone could possible imagine. Thanks for having some balls Baz!
Not sure how cold the character is suppose to be but she is 25 and Leo is 36 so not too sure it is too far off esp when Lively is 22 and she was being considered (shudder).
I like Mulligan better than majority of the names that were being mentioned. So I guess she can pass.
Now if they can recast Tobey that would be great.
I forgot to add, Daisy was 23 I think, and Mulligan is 25 so she can’t be too young for the role.
Luhrman is going to skullfuck this worse than he did Romeo and Juliet. WTF is DiCaprio thinking? Maybe he wants a bigger paycheck after busting his tail w/ Mendes and Scott and whatnot, but for fuck’s sake, Luhrmann is all flash no substance. The Great Gatsby is a jewel of American culture b/c of Fitzgerald’s fine handling of literature. Luhrmann is disgustingly obnoxious and showy with his movies. He will fuck this up; I’m so sorry for anyone that gets involved in this project, because this is the perfect setup for career suicide.
Skullfuck is right – Baz has very weird sensibilities (when he just doesn’t plan suck – see “Australia”) and he will likely weird up Gatsby for no good reason (other than self-aggrandizement) and lose what makes Gatsby the Great American Novel.
Who the hell packaged this turkey?
Joe, who’d you rather they cast? A real actress like Megan Fox?
Megan Fox would have been perfect. Beautiful, hauntingly desireable yet in the end the depth of a puddle and the brains of a box of rocks. Daisy is a woman Gatsby did everything so that he could have her, but in the end she’s not worth having.
Someone needs to reign in the problematic and egotistical Baz Luhrmann . He can’t control himself because his directing style is too over-the-top- no nuance whatsoever. I fear Baz will water down the complex material of the story , and will make this film foolishly contemporary, when it is a period movie . Why would he even want to remake a classic ? I’m just scared Luhrmann will just create a high school production The Great Gatsby.
Yes! Excellent choice, so excited about the cast. Leo will do great, my choice for Nick is Robert Pattinson, he’s an amazing pianist and jazz performer,it could add some juicy stuff to the role
NO! Robert Pattison would be horrible. Toby will be just fine as Nick. Nick’s purpose is to give insight to the conflicts, which Toby is good at doing.
*Pattinson. Sorry
Em, sorry but I think Tobey’s facial expression isn’t appropiate for that role. Just my opinion, I never pictured Nick that boyish. That said and knowing zero about the script if music skills are required, Pattinson is a good singer and musician. (jazz piano performer also)
Pattinson can’t act. A robot could deliver lines with more emotion than he does. I also can’t stand his fanbase. They cyber-bully anyone who works with him and it’s very disrespectful what they have to endure. Every actress that’s had to work with him endures unspeakable cyber-stalking from the deranged Twi-tards because they’re convinced these women want to bed him, i.e. Reese Witherspoon, Emilie de Ravin, Nikki Reed, etc still get nasty comments under their pictures from these so-called fans. This production doesn’t need that kind of drama, and again, he CAN’T ACT!!! I think Ryan Gosling would be perfect in the role of Nick. He’s very talented and brings no unnecessary baggage to the set.
I wish they would have gone with Blake
Seriously…? Have you actually read the book?
