EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has found his Daisy Buchanan. He has officially given the starring role in The Great Gatsby to Carey Mulligan, the Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Never Let Me Go star who’ll play the manipulative heroine when Luhrmann starts production on his adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic.
Mulligan was on the reception line for The Fashion Council Awards in New York when she got the call on her cell phone from Luhrmann, just a few minutes ago. She burst into tears on the red carpet in front of Karl Lagerfield and Anna Wintour. This all occurred shortly after Luhrmann showed the audition footage to Sony Pictures Entertainment execs Amy Pascal and Doug Belgrad, who were impressed by Mulligan’s command of the character played in the 1974 film by Mia Farrow.
Mulligan was a late entrant to an elite list of actresses that Luhrmann met with while he conducted readings with Leonardo DiCaprio, who’ll play Jay Gatsby. Tobey Maguire is expected to play his friend, Nick Carraway, who narrates the tale. No word yet on who’ll play the other major roles, Daisy’s husband Tom, their social companion Jordan Baker, Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson and her gas station owner husband George.
Luhrmann delivered the message to Deadline, and gave me the above photo he took of Mulligan during rehearsals, when she was in Daisy Buchanan mode on November 2. “The results from the workshop process on The Great Gatsby have been very encouraging,” he told Deadline. “There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”
The 25-year old actress was nominated for an Academy Award last year for her work in the Lone Scherfig-directed coming of age tale An Education.
It was a busy day for Luhrmann who spoke at the funeral of Dino De Laurentiis along with the likes of David Lynch and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Luhrmann became close with the charismatic producer when they tried to mount an epic version of Alexander the Great that was to star DiCaprio. The project halted when a rival film with Oliver Stone and Colin Farrel made it into production first. Luhrmann spoke at length over how moved he was that De Laurentiis made his own family such a part of his life despite his thriving producing career, something Luhrmann made sure to emulate as he carved his own path. Luhrmann wore a red tie, in keeping with the De Laurentiis family wish.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks a British actress is the perfect choice for a very American role. Is this the only business in the United States that gives foreigners jobs over qualified Americans? I don’t understand.
British actress Vivien Leigh did a fair job on the most iconic American film female of all time.
Have any of you who approve of this casting actually read the book???? Is Mulligan worth all the effort Gatsby goes to, to win her?
I think not.
well said.
Perhaps *everybody* ought to read the book…Gatsby obsesses over Daisy not because of how beautiful she is…but because of what she represents…success.
And the green light in the book is not the greenlight Hollywood is familiar with…
I applaud this choice. Immensely. I will be there on opening night. Can’t wait.
the movie will never happen
DiCaprio, in real life, would never date a girl who looked like Carey Mulligan; talent can’t always make you ignore an actress’s appearance.
Is Baz Luhrmann blind?
You don’t think Leo signed off on this casting? Think a bit here before typing pls.
Who do you think that she is holding in the photo? That is Leo.
I’m sorry but I agree with Sunny, I was hoping for a more age appropriate actress like Charlize Theron. Theron would have knocked this out of the park! Rachel McAdams would have been an excellent selection also! Carey was horrible in Wall Street.
Theron is way too old to play Daisy. Daisy is 23 in the book.
How embarrassing for all the actresses who we now know auditioned but did not get the role. Really, Baz, did you need to humiliate them all to show your power?
Is it their goal to make it seem like the story is about a man instead of a woman? If so, mission accomplished.
How sad for this generation to grow up when movies aren’t valued, and to miss out on how delicious and singular and inviolate movies used to be. Remaking this film is heinous. Moreover, though Mulligan is likable, Leo D is a drip and is lazy casting for Gatsby.. Hopefully it flops and the soulless money vultures will stop pillaging for anemic remakes.
Gatsby has never been adapted correctly (or successfully), so remaking this isn’t heinous so much as it is a try at finally getting it right.
Australia was such a ‘sweeping’ story. This one will ‘sweep’ too. How does Baz Luhrmann say ‘action’? “Okay, everyone, annnnnnnd….SWEEP!”
Come on, that’s funny.
Fitzgeralds works will fall in the public domain on january 1st 2011.
I was really looking forward to seeing Rebecca Hall as Daisy Buchanan. think she’ll look swell as a blonde. Red riding anyone??
… pretty sure that Daisy is a brunette in the novel.
Gatsby is an eternally flawed story. As much as I adore Fitzgerald and the romance of his words, no amount of crass over-stylization can disguise this.
Whether it’s flawed or not is open to debate, but the issues of class mobility its based on are certainly dated beyond relevance.
Another allegation hurled out there without an ounce of explication or evidence…can’t even tell if you are attempting snark…
Ahem…you are going to have to explain “eternally flawed story” – and not just toss it out there as an allegation.
Good for her though I’m sure the movie will still be awful.
She’s a good choice for Daisy but I have my reservations about how she’ll play off against DiCaprio. In fact, I’m not too keen on the idea of Leo as Jay to begin with. That casting is just not clicking for me. I also can’t believe Maguire is the first choice for Nick. I would have thought Joseph Gordon Levitt would be ideal casting for that. But I guess Luhrmann knows what he’s doing. Hopefully.
Rebecca Hall would have owned this role! Carey Mulligan’s too…ugh
Tobey Maguire? I think he looks a bit serious to play Nick. I was imagining someone more wide-eyed.
Um…did the Sony brass really need Baz to sell them on Carey Mulls? Seems like she was the only viable choice from the get-go, aside from the fact that she’s clearly the It actress of the moment and probably gets 5 offers a day. Anyhow, thank god the long search for Daisy Bews is finally over and we ended up with the girl we all knew it would be all along.
Thank God, no Blake Lively! Love you always and forever, Baz.
As a Brit, Gatsby’s my absolute favourite novel. It is just beautiful. I think Baz will do a gr8 job. But when I heard about this I desperately hoped for Keira Knightley as Daisy. Carey’s pic looks quite interesting above, but for me Daisy has to be icy and unattainable as well. Liked Adrien Brody for Nick Carraway!
I can’t wait to see this for the sets and art direction. I’m not so sure the film itself will be great but I’m sure it’ll be a feast for the eyes. Luhrman could actually really do this thing justice, if he doesn’t cut too often. Can’t wait.
Voting for Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Michelle Williams as George and Myrtle Wilson.
There are high expectations for this version of The Great Gatsby. The previous effort by Redford and Farrow had lots of potential, but the result was disappointing. If Baz can connect with the strength of Fitzgeralds writing it could be brilliant. Or epic disaster. Good luck .
Carey is a fantastic actress but have CAA forgotten about their other talent. Why was Emily Blunt not in the mix? She is as brilliant as Carey and just that bit older which would have been better for Daisy. Carey seems to clean up at the expense of other CAA clients.
Because Carrey Mulligan is pure in her soul / spirit, and it comes across on screen, and her acting is very pure as well. She is a breath of fresh air for Hollywood, to bring actresses back to ” natural beauty’ as opposed to Plastic surgery, and ” natural talent ” when you’re just born gifted. Great choice Baz!!
Gatsby was published in 1925, and is not in public domain. I believe anything Fitzgerald wrote prior to 1925 is in public domain, including the novels “This Side of Paradise” and “The Beautiful and Damned.”
Gatsby is my favorite piece of writing, and personally I can’t picture Carey Mulligan as Daisy. She’s a terrific actress, but it’s hard to imagine her as someone’s obsession. I can’t help thinking of “Inception” where Marion Cotillard was completely believable as Leonardo DiCaprio’s obsession. If Carey Mulligan had been cast in “Inception,” I’m quite certain it would have been in the Ellen Page role.
I agree with one of the posters above that Keira Knightley would be a great choice for Daisy.
