EXCLUSIVE: Brothers & Sisters is reuniting Sally Field with her Norma Rae leading man Beau Bridges for a major romantic story arc to kick off early next year. Bridges, who co-starred as the title character’s husband Sonny in the 1979 pic, will play a love interest for Field’s Walker matriarch Nora in at least five episodes. The news comes as the ABC drama is enjoying a wave of momentum in its fifth season. After showing surprising ratings muscle this fall, the network increased the show’s episode order from 18 to 22 (a.k.a. a full season). Michael Ausiello will be contributing to Deadline.com and Movieline.com as he preps for the January launch of a new TV-centric website.

Brothers & Sisters lost me this season. When they did the “jump forward in time a year” copout, lost the best actress on the show (Emily Van Camp) and started going with a bunch of cheap, superficial storylines, I lost interest. And I LOVED this show. It was my favorite show, hands down. It was so well-written and acted, had so much heart. Now it’s all silly arcs and superficial stories that are getting resolved within 2 episodes. I just plain don’t care anymore. And I don’t appreciate them axing Van Camp for budget reasons and then bringing in Beau Bridges. If you want to maintain or expand viewership, the way to do it isn’t to have a love affair between two 60 year olds who once acted in a movie DECADES ago that most of today’s generation has never even heard of.
Breaking up Justin and Rebecca and losing Van Camp and having Justin screwing everybody within an episode of losing the love of his life was a mistake. Having some absurd cheating storyline between Kevin and Scotty out of nowhere that gets resolved in 2-3 episodes was a mistake. Jumping over Robert’s death and forcing Kitty into new random hookups was a mistake. Dedicating 10 minutes every episode to Sally Field’s character rambling on the radio is a mistake. Having Holly be nothing more than a side arc doing some memory loss schtick is a mistake. Having the most boring character on the show rolling around in bed with some French hottie is getting old and nothing more than time filler.
They just lost it, so they can add random veterans to put opposite Sally Field all they want, but I’m done. And I’ve been a loyal viewer since episode one. THAT is how annoyed and disappointed I am by this season, and since I see no change in sight, I’m out. Thanks B&S, it’s been fun, but….not any more.
Agreed! Rob Lowe got out just in time.
As I recall, Emily VanCamp wasn’t axed. She basically quit. According to her exit interview with Ausiello, they wanted her to sign on for two more seasons but she decided she’d rather pursue other things. It was a shame, as I agree she was one of the best actors on the show, but it was out of the producers’ hands. Her contract was up and she didn’t want to renew. Can’t do anything about that really. And frankly, given the current state of the show, which I also stopped watching, I completely understand why she didn’t want to come back. It’s well past it’s prime.
yeah, they should have stretched out the k & s storyline to more episodes. come on. cheating. resolved in one episode? i’d like to see kevin slowly become withdrawn and maybe into the arms of someone else. those old episodes with chad were hilarious. it’d make for interesting episodes if they drifted apart, and battled to keep their marriage together.
hmm? I disagree. I think the show is great! You just sound cranky. We all look forward to this show every week. It holds a lot of mystery, comedy, drama, family, and most of all charm. So if you’re bored with the show, why are you writing such a long detailed slam against it. Just turn the channel and watch a murder mystery or something. geez.
Does this mean the other guy is out? After they just made nice in the last episode?
I guess this means Nora and Dr. Karl won’t be together very long.
That’s pretty pathetic if you’ve never heard of Sally Field. The show is worth watching just for her.
Here Brothers & Sisters goes with the predicable Nora Walker relationship drama. I’m honestly just tired of her relationships, because they all only last 4-5 episodes anyway. Other users are right this season has plain blown, and I’m about to throw in the towel on this show!
I love, loved this show. I think the reason this season is subpar is because they thought they weren’t being picked up, no? and thought this was their last season? I’m glad they’re staying on and think maybe they can get some of the magic back. There have been some funny moments and lines like the “I’m the Russian judge” line and others. Love the show.
For those of you who complain about this show you have missed the point…the show is ALL about Sally Field and she holds it all together. Its her journey from the deceit of her marriage to how she copes and she is amazing. The brothers and sisters are all a foil to Nora’s character. Bravo to the producers who finally figured this out. Her growth as a human being is the centre of this show and dont forget it.Perhaps some of you dont have big families or understand that things change very rapidly within the family dynamic. But at the centre is always the Mother…and Sally Field is on hell of a Mother and a great character in this show.
Sally Field does such a great job transforming what at times is some pretty sappy writing- she’s the best thing about this show, and her acting chops reach wow level frequently. And anytime Mr. B is on screen, I know I’m in for similar experience- glad to see this casting.
And I agree about Emily Van Camp- she was fantastic. Why the bonehead decision to write her out.
Emily Van Camp best actress on the show? big LOL!!!! I like the show now. There are still some great actors on it. The best one: Matthew Rhys
I still love this show and will be happy if it continues on for lots more seasons. It is my fav show and I love all the characters. Sally Field is my age, so I’ve seen her grow throughout her career and she’s fantastic; If I had to pick a favorite actor on this show she would be it. Matthew Rhys and Scotty would be my second favs, but I love them all.
The only problem I have is that I never know when they are going to pre-empt the show for something I have no interest in. I can’t count the number of times I’ve waited all week to see Brothers and Sisters on Sunday to be disappointed again because it’s not being shown. Last Sunday was another one of those times. What’s up with that?!!!
I dont particularly miss the character of Rebecca. I adore Kevin and Scotty, I think Nora and her two daughters are great. Im surprised about the loss of Holly though. I think she brought some conflict that was interesting.
I love this show. Keep it on the air.
well i love this show ,but they do jump around alot my fav people are nora, kevin, scotty ,holly and i think uncle saw needs to be fired from the company buisness cayse he had so many lies , but the show is great i love it so much
I wonder if Beau Bridges will play the long ago boyfriend of Nora’s? I don’t think Sarah will turn out to be his child, but where ever it goes I’ll enjoy the ride as I have all the past shows. I’ll miss Robert (I wasn’t a Rob Lowe fan until this show, now I can’t get enough) and Rebecca until the last episode, which I hope will be at least several years. I also hope they bring Kitty back and in politics again. Holly is the paramour we love to be worried about no matter what she’s up to, she’s gotta come back. This show is all about adult grown family, with all it’s disfunctions. Given ratings and awards, I’m not the only one that feels this way. I’ve always loved Sally Field and she is the reason I started watching, but I’ve watched these years because I LOVE this show!!!!
I have to say that I completely agree with “Um No’s” comment on November 18, 2010.
This has been one of my favorite shows since the start, but the writers lost me after that explosive season finale.
I was really sad to see Rob Lowe leave. His character played a huge part in the show to me. I think Robert and Kitty’s storyline was probably my favorite because of their amazing chemistry together. Maybe they could have replaced Rob Lowe with another actor? It would have been hard to get used to at first, but I would have preferred to see Kitty with Robert, instead of her single side.
I feel that Holly’s character has become monotonous. I liked her growing relationship with Nora and now it’s in limbo, along with all of the other characters.
I am going to keep watching because I don’t want to give up on this show. I just hope that the characters can have more stability next season instead of jumping around so much.
Im giving my opinion and not complaining. It is an amazing show but it’s going through some bumps in the road for me. What do you guys think about Rob Lowe leaving?
I love the addition of Beau Bridges! He seems to bring a new breath to the Walkers. He seems fun, outgoing, and good for them all. The dog is sweet and has her place at Nora’s. I was excited about the show for the first time in a while!
It looks like Beau Bridges is Sarah’s father. Drama!
