EXCLUSIVE: Brad Pitt is negotiating to star in and produce Cogan’s Trade, a comedic crime saga that re-teams Pitt with Andrew Dominik, who directed Pitt in the gunslinger role in the 2007 Western The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. This time, Pitt will play Jackie Cogan, a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game held under the protection of the mob. The picture is an ensemble and Pitt’s Jesse James co-star Casey Affleck has been also rumored as a possible participant.
Dominik wrote the script. The New Zealand-born filmmaker has only directed two films, making his debut on the Eric Bana-starrer Chopper in 2000. Cogan’s Trade has been set up independently, financed by Inferno Entertainment, which will handle international sales. The picture is being produced by Plan B’s Pitt and Dede Gardner and Chockstone’s Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz. Inferno’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel will be exec producers with Marc Butan, and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. CAA packaged it. The agency reps Dominik as well as Pitt, who’s managed by Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
The film quickly becomes one of the hot titles at AFM. When Pitt plans to make the movie isn’t clear yet. The actor, who has two pictures in the can — Moneyball and Tree of Life – hasn’t landed on his next project. I’ve heard there’s interest on a New Regency adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel The Gray Man, a drama about a CIA operative-turned-hired-killer, is targeted for death by a team assigned to rescue him. A chase leads them across Europe and leads him to a daughter he didn’t know he had. The script is by Adam Cozad and numerous directors are circling the project.

Great news! The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford was one of the best American films of the decade, an unqualified masterpiece in every regard. This is an exciting development…
Are you kidding? ‘The Assassination…” was a painfully boring movie so I think I’ll skip this, um, comedic crime caper, if it reunites the same director and star. Once was more than enough…
Are you shitting me? It was exactly the opposite. It died at the theaters faster than a gunslinger at sundown.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, p there with Apocalypse Now and Days of Heaven.
There are a ton of good movies that don’t do well at the box office. TAOJJBTCRF was one of them. Warner Brothers dumped the movie into theaters with zero support and very little promotion because they were pissed at Pitt, Dominik and the other producers who wouldn’t turn the movie into a shoot ‘em up, bang, bang flick with Jesse as a sympathetic figure. Pitt, along with co-producers Ridley & Tony Scott, fought hard for the director’s vision of the film, so it’s no surprise that Pitt would sign on to work with Dominik again. For people like myself who loved TAOJJBTCRF we’re excited to see Pitt and Dominik re-team. The really great thing is that if you don’t like it – don’t go to the movies to see it. Ain’t it amazing how simple life can be…
I don’t think anyone knows what film Brad will do until Brad decides to let people know. Same with Angie. No one knew about her directing until she was just about to do it.
It seems there are weekly reports on what movie he or she will be doing. And their names get linked to any and every project. Brad has not worked in over a year (well in front of the camera). He seems to be focusing a lot on Producing. I can’t wait to see what he decides t do next. I enjoy his films.. especially the ones in the past 6 years..
Brad just finished shooting Moneyball last month.
oops.. forgot to add that.. thanks.
Another one I’m waiting to see
What about The Lost City of Z?
I don’t think they have the money in place yet. The last I heard James Gray (who’s writing and directing) said the movie would be an epic and need at least a $150MIL budget. Do you know many studios willing to pony up $150MIL for a Lawrence of Arabia-type epic? If so, point them James Gray’s way.
From a rocky start, Inferno is involved in some good stuff these days (LOST CITY OF Z, TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN, TANGIER, BAD GIRLS, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT). Looking forward to seeing where Bill & Jim steer the ship next.
If my expereince with Bill is any indication, he will steer the ship into a a cliff wall.
@debra
You forgot Moneyball.
The article doesn’t mention it, but this is based on the novel Cogan’s Trade, written by George Higgins, who also wrote The Friends of Eddie Coyle.
Thank you Wayne. A little respect, please, for the writer who could blow the doors off Chuck Hogan (The Town) and Dennis Lehane (Mystic River)…
He should make World War Z and The Lost City of Z next. I’m dying to see them–the books were impeccable.
I wasn’t that big on “Jesse James”, but Dominik made “Chopper” so he’s still a must see director.
Maybe it doesn’t mean proof of film life but there are a lot of details being reported. At the very least, the project seems viable.
I agree that The Assassination of Jesse James was a masterpiece and criminally handled by Warner Brothers. Dominick knows how to direct a frenetic and amusing film. I’d trust him with this project.
Now as for the Zzzzzs: I am really not interested in The Lost City of Z but please let’s get to World War Z.
I agree with Benjamin. “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is a great film – the best movie that came out the year it was released.
The assassination would have been a great movie if it had a great actor in it. Pitt just doesn’t do it for me. Whats up with his face lately? Looks like it’s a pain for him to even make an expression. Sucks for an actor when he uses to much Botox or whatever.
Seriously, Mar, have you even seen Brad’s face? No one who has seen it could possibly suggest he uses botox. It is full of life and all the lines and marks that come with it. There is just no evidence of botox.
And thanks to Stacy upthread for a good exposition of how Warner Brothers screwed Jesse James and those who tried to hold to its vision.
Agree. I adore Jesse James. Brilliant film. But what a year it was in 2007. There was that, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Zodiac to name just four all released that year. Love them all.
I like a lot of Brad’s film choice but as an actor he is sooooooo unbelievably boring.
1990-1995 Brad plays a stoner.
Seven years in Tibet, Meet Joe Black, and Troy. Brad has really, really blonde hair.
Fight Club and Snitch: Brad spent a lot time at the gym to prepare.
12 Monkeys, The Ocean’s Franchise, Burn After Reading: The films where Brad is manic and twitches a lot.
Interview with a Vampire is probably one of Brad’s best performances. I think it’s because he actually has to work for it in this one. He can’t mug his way through the picture with his face and his sun-kissed hair.
As for the last ten years, he hasn’t really done all that much.
The first Ocean’s film is fun, but fluff. Brad and the entire cast just phoned it in for 12 and 13.
He was great in Babel, because who wouldn’t be great doing all of their scenes with Cate Blanchett? You can’t really screw that up.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: His best film, but his performance was completely ripped off from Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. I know the films are similar and they were written by the same writer, but why are the performances exactly the same? The narration with the slow, slightly southern/mid-western accent that’s delivered with a dash of naive wonder about how the world is unfolding before him. Watch the films back to back and you will come to the conclusion that Tom Hanks should sue Brad Pitt for plagiarism.
Assassination of Jesse James: Beautifully shot, but painfully slow. Brad’s performance didn’t wow at all, but the cinematography certainly did.
Burn After Reading: Of all of the wonderful supporting actors the Coen Brothers have worked with over the years, I doubt Brad’s performance ranks up there. John Tuturro did more with five minutes of screen time in The Big Lebowski than Brad Pitt will do in his entire career.
Inglorious Basterds: If Brad weren’t so well liked and such a big star the critics would gave shredded him. That horrible accent almost killed the film. And let’s be honest, the best scenes are the ones he’s not even in. The opening scene, the card scene in the bar.
Brad is basically Tom Cruise with blonde hair, a good looking actor who is just mediocre, but had the good fortune to pick the right films. Like Cruise, half his income comes from the fame that dating famous women has brought him. He has literally never been without a famous woman on his arm since the day he first appeared on everyone’s radar. His career can be broken down into the Juliette Lewis years, the Paltrow years, the Aniston years, the Jolie years.
Seriously, there is no way Brad could afford to do one film a year and spend the rest of it living quietly with some complete unknown. He just doesn’t have the talent for that and most of us wouldn’t even know who he was.
That’s a little reductive, don’t you think? Pitt is talented and has done plenty of very good work. Not every performance is golden, sure, but that’s true of every actor. What about “Fight Club,” “12 Monkeys,” “Se7en,” “Snatch,” etc. etc.? All good or great films with nuanced performances by Pitt.
Obviously Andrew is lazy. The sooner he starts doing mindless shoot em’ ups and glorified tv movies the sooner his brilliance and dedication can be discounted as an anomaly.
Why would actors with a choice to work with anyone in the world work with him?
The fact that Dominik is New Zealand born is kind of irrelevant. He is Australian; he left NZ when he was a couple years old and spent his childhood, adolescents and 20′s in Australia and made his first film in Australia. Australia.
I shall continue to promote Dominik’s Australian-ness for as long as this injustice continues!
