Cameron Crowe has set Patrick Fugit and Elle Fanning is in talks to star alongside Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson in We Bought A Zoo. Thomas Hayden Church is also in the Fox film based on the Benjamin Mee memoir. Fugit, you’ll recall, played the young journalist who was essentially playing Crowe in Almost Famous, a memoirish film that chronicled the filmmaker’s experience when, as a teenaged journalist, he was hired by Rolling Stone magazine to go on the road with the Allman Brothers when the band was on the rise.
Nobody’s saying what role Fugit will be playing, but Elle Fanning will play the role of Lily, a 13-year old who works at the zoo’s restaurant. Too young to legally be working, she gets paid under the table and lives on the property. Her only parental figure is Kelly (Johansson), from whom Lily learns to be at ease with the animals. The young girl is immediately fascinated by the son of the zoo’s new owner (Damon), and she becomes very flirtatious. Colin Ford is circling the role of Dylan. Fanning has been on a roll, and working with strong filmmakers. She’s in JJ Abrams’ Super Eight, and next appears in Francis Ford Coppola’s thriller Twixt Now And Sunrise. Fugit’s repped by Gersh, Fanning by One Talent Management.

This seems like an awfully rushed posting. Shouldn’t the title of the film in the first paragraph be “Zoo”? Secondly, where did this idea of The Allman Brothers come into play with regards to “Almost Famous”? More like Black Oak Arkansas or sound band like that, I would think. Lastly, I very much respect Crowe, but this really sounds boring. Just sayin’.
Although the various events in ALMOST FAMOUS were about Cameron Crowe’s relationships with several bands/70s rockers, the fictional band STILLWATER, and how Crowe came to be on tour with them, was based on his experiences with THE ALLMAN BROTHERS.
Elvis Lives is right — it’s no secret. Crowe has said that Almost Famous was based around a tour he went on with the Allman Brothers, and Stillwater (the band in the movie) is based mostly on them and Led Zeppelin.
I think Fugit was awful in Almost Famous – I hope he learned to act like he’s not acting anymore.
He was pretty good in Saved and Wristcutters.
But then I thought he was also terrific in Almost Famous, given his experience at the time.
This movie really sounds boring
Anyone know when they begin filming this movie?
Man, you guys really get off on dumping on movies that haven’t been made yet. Cameron Crowe is good. Just because the movie sounds boring on paper doesn’t mean the movie would be boring. I think Crowe has earned more than a passing dismissal of his ideas. Chill.
with this and The Zookeeper on the horizon it brings to mind fond memories of the amazing ‘Volcano’/'Dante’s Peak’ year in cinema.
Is it safe to say Elle is officially the new IT girl? She is going to be in Somewhere, Super 8, Twixt Now and Sunrise, Vivaldi, and now this… damn.
