EXCLUSIVE: CBS loves Rob Riggle. For a third consecutive development season, the network has made finding a starring vehicle for the former Daily Show correspondent a priority. CBS is in negotiations for a half-hour comedy project from Saturday Night veteran Robert Smigel to which Riggle is attached to star. The untitled comedy centers on a gregarious guy (Riggle) who winds up as a real estate agent working for the nerd he made fun of in high school. The project was pitched straight to the network and will be laid off at sister studio CBS TV Studios. Smigel, Riggle, Peter Principato and Paul Young are executive producing.
Riggle is under his third consecutive talent holding deal at CBS. Under his previous two, he recurred on the network’s comedy Gary Unmarried and starred in last season’s pilot Team Spitz, which came close to a series order, largely based on Riggle’s performance. I hear that this development season CBS has already bought several other comedy pitches with Riggle in mind, but the Robert Smigel comedy is the only one he is formally attached to. The project reunites CAA-repped Riggle and Smigel who crossed paths during Riggle’s season-long stint on SNL in 2004-05. Riggle, who guest starred on NBC’s Chuck on Monday, just wrapped Tom Hanks’ Larry Crowne and is currently shooting Working Title’s Everybody Loves Whales. He is managed by Principato Young. Smigel is making his feature writing debut with the upcoming Jack and Jill toplined by another SNL alum, Adam Sandler.

a meh comedy for a meh comic…
Art, you are so mean…
Rob Riggle is the man.
Art, I understand that you are probably one of the most profound and understated comedians of our life time, but I think that it would definitely be AWESOME to see this.
Riggle was absolutely fabulous in Chuck – he’s got some acting chops and intensity in those eyes that bespeak a future in this game.
a meh comment from a meh hater
Smigel co-wrote “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”
Another meh comedy for a different meh comic.
ED LIKES T-REX DICK
These guys are both fantastic at what they do. Sounds like a creative super star pairing from a great comedy team.
I think it will be one of the best comedy shows. This two are very good at this.
Robert Smigel is a genius. Those cartoons he did for SNL are classics. Looking forward to seeing more of his work.
And yet another dude show from CBS… CBS may love Riggle but sure appears to hate on women
THIS.
CBS needs a ‘Christine’ replacement. NOW.
Are you kidding me? Smigel is responsible for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and TV Funhouse. He is probably the funniest person out there… here’s hoping he can do something somewhat edgy and daring for CBS… probably not likely, but still, anything Smigel does is interesting.
His performance on Chuck was peculiar. Not manic enough to come off as the half-crazy psychologist I think they were going for, but otoh too sane & competent to excuse the sloppy nonsense he put them all through (including his own death, when he turned his back to an armed enemy spymaster). I think the character was supposed to be more of a Howling Mad Murdock, and Riggle didn’t pull it off.
If you’ve ever seen “TV Funhouse,” you’ll know what everyone who’s worked with him does: Smigel is one of the funniest guys on the planet. That doesn’t mean this project is automatically a winner, but it’s definitely got a shot to be special.
With a little wiggle, I think I could get a giggle from a Riggle-Smigel production.
Smigel may be funny, if not dated, but I’ve watched Rob Riggle pop up in various “comedies” for the past 4 years and haven’t laughed once. Just sayin’.
Rob Riggle is already dated. This is meh. Couldn’t agree more. Like Ed Helms. These are just middle of the road guys. There is real talent out there just waiting to be snatched. If you don’t succeed try try again. Not try try try again. Meh.
Riggle is under his third consecutive talent holding deal at CBS. Why? And let’s name the woman and or women under their third consecutive talent holding deal at CBS. Yup. Is this guy funny? Seriously? Show me the funny.
Good luck getting a script.
Rob Riggle? I thought that was Patrick Warburton!
They’re pretty interchangeable.
It won’t happen.
What about the pilot TEAM SPITZ? Wasn’t this being re-worked to better utilize Riggle’s “talents”? And what does this mean for Martin & Schiff?
I love Rob Riggle, hope this works out for him.
Riggle is the man. For all you haters – you obviously hate talented people, America, puppies, children and unicorns. And rainbows. You hate rainbows. Commie pigs.
Riggle is about to blow up, he will be a household name very soon!
I agree. Once Scorcese takes notice of Riggle, there will be no stopping him.
Rob Riggle is hilarious! Did you not see his coverage in Iraq on the Daily Show (when he was really there)?
I saw him do live stand-up and it was worth every penny! See him live before you judge (my two cents).
I am a Big fan of Rob Riggle. I love his style. I wish him the best on any future projects. I worked for years with commercial pilots and f/as with USAirways. It is refreshing to laugh and Rob Riggle gives it to you everytime. I worked with very serious minded people. I love his work. I am not a hater only a lover of the arts. Sharon aurednik PA
I think Rob Riggle is absolutely hilarious. I miss him on TDS.
When Rob Riggle used to come on TDS that was my cue to go and fetch a drink – Zero laughs then or ever.
This show can’t start fast enough…these guys are awesome! Especially Rob Riggle….always cracks me up, And I love to see that face!
so handsome! Good luck
