EXCLUSIVE: CBS’ daytime drama The Young and the Restless will be restless for at least three more years with a new renewal that will keep the top-rated soap on the network through the 2013-14 season. The pickup comes on the heels of NBC giving a two-season renewal to Days of Our Lives. That makes it 2-for-2 for Sony Pictures Television, which produces both series, at a time when many daytime dramas are struggling. The soap world has been contracting over the past couples of years with the
cancellations of CBS’ The Guiding Light and As the World Turns and NBC’s Passions. The Young and the Restless was never considered in jeopardy as it ranks as the top-rated daytime drama for a 22th consecutive year. Still, a long-term renewal so early into the series’ current season is a vote of confidence to the show. I hear the pickup is a straightforward one. The previous two-year renewal in August 2009 included a license fee reduction that resulted in budget cuts, including trimming the cast’s salaries that led to a brief standoff between star Eric Braeden and Sony. Created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, The Young and the Restless debuted on March 26, 1973 as a half-hour and was expanded to an hour in 1980. The soap recently featured the return of one-time star David Hasselhoff.

Excellent news! This may not be everyone’s favorite art form but it is still a viable and valuable contributor. And no one does it better than Y&R.
I have been watching Y & R since I got married in 1974. And I have to say I am a little tired of Sharon and Nick. I think they need to find something else for those two to do. I think Sharon needs to be a little more stable, they have her acting like a thoughtless, senseless, uncaring women. Why would she even be interested in Adam after his involvement with her baby? It really turns me off, her and Adam. I never thought I would get tired of watching Y&R but I am seriously considering not watching it any more.
Signed,
Turned Off
THIS IS IT, SHARON IS WITH ADAM.
I WILL NO LONGER WATCH THIS SHOW, IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH.
THIS WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW.
I totally agree with this post. I have been Y&R just as long and with the Sharon with Adam twist I am ready to stop watching for good. What are the writers thinking. They have made Sharon into an absolute idiot. I have been rooting for Nick and Sharon to finally get back together and just when we finally get there Adam is back in the picture. What a slap in the face. If wanted to see evil win all of the time I would just watch the 24 hour news shows. I watch Y&R for an occasional happy ending and it was ripped apart. I hope the writers come to their senses fast or I am turning the show off for good. I think this latest twist should just be a bad dream that Sharon wakes up from when Nick meets her in NO before Adam gets to her.
I am PUMPED and excited – I have been watching this show since the 1st episode and am an avid Y&R Triva freak. Would I like to see more Of Nikki & Victor ??? Y-E-S But I love the show and seriouly believe it helped propell me into acting adn Theatre – YOu have to take it for what it is A SOAP OPERA thus melodrama. Yes the writing team has changed and you can tell but – I will watch it Tivo it and Live it all with them as long as it runs. CHEER’S and congrratulations here’s to many more years of Genoa City on the “Canvas”. Mimosa’s during teh friday braodcast with my friend Rusty who has been watching with me for over 20 yrs !!!!
My goodness, these are old comments. I love, love, love, Y&R. I don’t know what happened to make sweet Sharon and sweet Christine so bitchy, but I love it. For years, I wanted Phyliss to get what she deserves for all the mean stuff she has done, but now I feel sorry for her. I love Michael and Lauren together. Please, writers, don’t ever separate them. They are a perfect couple. Keep on doing what your’re doing. Y&R is the best soap on T.V.
Congratulations to everyone at Y&R. There’s a reason that it’s the #1 soap on TV. Great drama and great acting. No one does it better!
Give some credit to the ongoing leadership of the inimitable Paul Rauch. The man is a legend in daytime!
Having worked with Paul on three soaps I heartily agree that his leadership makes a vast difference . He is the best producer , with the best eye. His understanding of actors results in a happy set that just wants to do their best. A winning combination for any show.
Hats off to Paul
Jennifer Dauria
That is very good news! I love love love this show! Congrats to you all!
So, when will it start to air in The Netherlands? I remember it from ’74 – ’84, when I lived in the USA.
i just want to say y&r is the only daytime drama i like or watch glad it will be around, but like with every other business they cast and crew need to thankful they have jobs right now, so a little pay cut i say oh well deal with it everyone else in america is
One of the only daytime soaps with phenom actors who could make it on Primetime. Michael Muhney, Christian LeBlanc, Doug Davidson, Peter Bergman to name a few of the absolute best…
All I can, is SWEET.
Congrats 2 Y&R…never thought a soap opera had 2 b renewed like night time TV, but Y&R ur great entertainment 4 daytime and night time, and I am soooo happy 2 hear the news…xoxoxo
What are they going to do with Nikki and Victor? Will the writers put them back together for one last time?
I don’t like Nikki with that Deacon!!
I agree, shouldn’t there be at the very least one couple that is stable and in real love, pillars of the show, respected, tried and true. Come on writers lets see something not done before.
This renewal means nothing as long as those showkillers Rauch/Sheffer/Hamner/Maria Bell are in charge over there.
Those four arrogant assholes have turned Y&R into this offensive, misogynistic parody of its former self. Everyone working on this show or defending the type of crap these people write should be ashamed of themselves.
But you know what? People love this kind of stupidity, as evident in their top ranking among females 18-49. What an easy decision for CBS.
I agree that Y and R has gone down hill in recent
years. There are times when I just switch to something else because the show gets so bad.
I have watched since 1974 and I agree whole heartily. Lets see some real story lines not the same stuff.
The renewal would have come sooner, along with higher ratings, if MAB had been fired, LML and Josh rehired, and there was more BALANCE to the Show, i.e., focusing more on Fan Favorites Lily and Cane Ashby, Neil and Devon Winters, and Jill Abbott, instead of a daily diet of the Newman Show and Weak Jack Abbott. Dissatisfaction with Y&R’s writomg team has proven to be a bonus for DOOL, the other Sony soap, as Fans are switching over in droves!
@Brit…Nah, no Lynn Marie Lethal either(even though her material was marginally better than the poop that passes for entertainment on this show today). She’s an egotistical, clueless twit as well. Keep her on holiday writing her next lame primetime series bible.
The problem with these daytime dramas is that they no longer tell emotionally driven stories. It’s all cheap plot after cheap plot with very little emotional resonance. You talk about Y&R fans switching over to Days of our Lives in droves. Why the hell is that a good thing? That show’s not any better.
Critics and those who thumb their noses up at soaps think the form and the structure is dated. The structure and the art of soap are not the problem. The people behind the scenes of these shows are. They no longer want to think outside of the box. It’s the same thing every November, February and May: Infidelity, Who’s The Daddy, Back from the Dead, Incest, etc. Soap fans or people who used to watch them have seen it all. Nothing keeps fans interested anymore because the writers rely on the same cheap bag of tricks for short ratings gains. The writers have taken their audience for granted and those who are left are watching out of habit or really fulfill the soap watching stereotype.
Frankly, all of these shows need to be canceled. Every single one of them.
i am so tired of the young & the restless because the devils on the
show gets away with all these things and the writers take them off
the program or pretend that we should forget that phyllis did all evil when she wanted danny plus adam all the evil he gets away with.just all stupid i no longer want to watch any soap.need to get lots of new writers or some old old ones back.
I used to watch it in the 80s when Eileen Davidson actually had something interesting to do…
IMHO, in 2014, it will be the last soap on the air on broadcast television.
The talented Michael Muhney has brought new life to Y&R and sizzle in his scenes with Sharon. Eric Braeden and Melody Scott Thomas have never been better. This is my never-miss show!
i’ve been a big fan of the soap opera genre for years !!! since i was 6yrs old. in fact my first memory of tv is mary stuart on search for tomorrow. since the cancellation of GL, ATWT recently i have been very anxious about the so called “death” of the soaps. i was afraid daytime would be one big talk show. but now with the renewals of Y&R and DOOL makes me feel much better !!! thanks to maria bell and paul rauch at Y&R’s helm the show is the best in daytime drama— but i still feel painfuly empty since the death of bill bell. hooray for all the soaps !!! an american tv tradition that can beath better !!!!
the current writing team’s story lines are droll and leave a lot to be desired. however, i will continue to watch because, i hope and pray, eric braeden will stick around for three more years. he is the absolute best!!!! congrats to the rest of the cast for doing a top-notch job with what you are given.
Hurray for renewal of an american classis but PLLEASE enough of Eric Braeden and his untalented monotoned, botoxed delivery of meaningless drivel. People are right that the writer’s and the Bell monoply have kept this show from being more current. Here’s a great idea–Summer finds a gun and shoots dear old grandstache right thru the eyes but Jack covers and takes the blame but resonable doubt (Maybe Sky? Maybe Diane?) sets him free!
My husband & I are retired & we never miss an episode of Y&R. We like it even better than “Desperate Housewives”. Sony did the right thing to renew. We’d like to see old episodes available on DVD also. Y&R can be Shakespearean at times. 75% of the acting is top notch. The story-lines have improved in the past few months.
Can I please post more than once? I have to respond to the poster who stated she is tired of Eric Braeden. Eric Braeden is the sole reason I discovered this show, while flipping channels. I have not seen a soap opera since Luke & Laura’s wedding. I make it a point to watch no morning tv at all, excepting the morning news. I had finished the noon news & discovered this amazing voice! Mr. Braeden mesmerized me. I had to watch him, & later introduced my husband to this show for amusement. We are not tv people. We are academically inclined. My favorite actors are Eric Braeden, Ian McShane & Sean Connery. And I’ve seen no botox on Mr. Braeden either.
Please, lets see some new story lines, commitment for Victor and Niki and Sharon needs to leave Adam alone that really turns me against her because of Adams involvement with her baby. Come on revive Y&R.
I love Adam and Sharon. I despise Victor and want him to lose. I have been watching this show since it first debuted. If Luke and Laura could be saved after he raped her back in 1982 then Adam and Sharon can be united. They have chemistry.
Congrats Y&R, it looks like we are going to grow older together. I’ve been a loyal fan since my elementary school days in 1976. So what Adam and Sharon, it’s a Soap!!! I’m tired of Nick & Sharon! We still have Queen Kay !!!!
YR congrats on renewal I can remember when yr came on no one would answer phones until the episode was over and then the conversations would began it was just an hour of escape from daily routine but now now you can watch real tv or read the paper and the evil you protray is really happening stealing babies tormenting people murder is adam really that critical to your ratings and you want him free for what he did not do sharon is just deaming to any woman that has had this happen to her must you show her as insane in love with forgeting her children I know your comment to me is I do not have to watch however this is a new year writers i am sure very well paid can there be story lines that do not project such evil on a soap opera because we really know that it really is in the heart of people in the real world today
i hate adam and sharon together its so gross any normal mother would not fall in love with her kidnapper.
