EXCLUSIVE: Channing Tatum has jumped to the top of the list for the lead of Sony Pictures’s 21 Jump Street. I’m told that Tatum will soon be in negotiations to star alongside Jonah Hill. Production will begin in the spring. Based on the 1987 Stephen J. Cannell series that was one of the Fox Network’s early successes and launched Johnny Depp, the movie was scripted by Michael Bacall based on a story he hatched with Hill. The film will be directed by Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. I’m told that the studio has met with a bunch of potential leading men and that Tatum and Hill matched up well. Both look youthful, which helps since the film is about undercover officers who infiltrate schools to fight crime. UTA-repped Tatum’s creating some pre-release buzz for his comic turn as the other man in the Ron Howard-directed The Dilemma, which Universal released on January 14. He’ll follow in a dramatic turn as a Roman soldier trying to reclaim his family honor in the Kevin Macdonald-directed The Eagle for Focus Features.

im a huge fan of the 21 jump street series. i think channing tatum is a horrible choice.
What happpen to Emma Stone? Sony was planning to make “21 Jump Street” with dual male-female leads concept, and Emme Stone was said to be one of the leads.
Great. Another studio ruining a great tv show by making a stupid movie about it. and Jonah Hill? Seriously?? Won’t be wasting my time or money on this one.
Will this be drama or comedy… or both?
Will totally check this out if Hill apologizes for Get Him To The Greek.
Seriously… movie-goers deserve an apology.
Jonah Hill is a horrible actor. I was disapointed in Get Him to the Greek. And Super Bad WAS super bad. As part of the new brat pack they seem to be making any garbage film that comes their way.
Sadly, there will be no drama. I read from another article that it’s gonna be an action/comedy and that it’ll be R-rated. The only person I can see Jonah Hill playing is Sal, the maintenance guy. As for Channing Tatum, he looks too old to pass for a teenager. Bad choice.
Could films get any worse than this? Tatum’s “acting” is so wooden and Jonah is pretty grating.
Sounds like pure shite.
Ah yes, TV shows from the 80s — also known as the great fount of genius and creativity that far surpasses anything any creative minds could ever come up with now.
“Hey, Hollywood! Please give us more opportunities to pay $14 to watch recycled crap that played for free on TV twenty-some years ago! PLEASE!!”
For (*&#$’s sake…
You pay $14 for movie tickets? Whoa. Its only about $6 where I live.
I used to watch the show back in the day despite the fact they were NARCS! Boo! Nobody likes a rat!
The Other Guys but younger?
Worst. Cast. Ever
REALLY? Channing Tatum?
I think Jonah Hill as Holly Robinson Peete is a brilliant move.
Channing was first cast as a dancer in Ricky Martin’s She Bangs Video and been working as a model in Armani and staring appearing in television on 2004.
Interesting choice… not one of the Apatow stable, for once. Wonder if it means they couldn’t get someone “bigger,” or if they were determined to go out of the box. Well, whoever they cast, Phil and Chris are going to make this movie awesome, just like they’ve done with everything else they’ve worked on… Cloudy, How I Met Your Mother, Clone High… those guys are stars.
I dont know how Channing keeps getting roles. He’s a terrible actor.
I wouldn’t card either of these guys. Sure, buddy, here’s your six-pack. You want a bottle of Scotch with that?
“Looks young enough?” Bologna. They could both get cast as teachers on Glee, not students.
Wait, so is Johnny Depp no longer taking a lead role here? I’m confused…
The fun thing about the series was that these so called cops couldn’t resist being sucked back into the drama of high school, no matter what the case… at the time many US PD depts. only required a HS diploma so these kids were just a year or two from their own senior proms, pimples and broken hearts. It was like they had a chance to do high school over… and finally get it right. One of the blurb lines was “HIgh School is Hard — especially when you have to do it twice” As for Narcs, we didn’t few “narc busts” — the whole idea was that these cops were conflicted about busting their own tribe, they’d rather try and help. Depp was astonishing from day one but the whole cast was excellent… like a brilliant garage band Johnny played with before he played with the Stones … he learned a lot on Jump Street, we all did… JS was always a funny show, and I hear Hill is going to take it even funnier… I can’t wait to see it. Fun fact, Johnny was already 23 years old and divorced when he played Tom Hanson; though, he did look about 17… he was no kid, smart as hell.
Aren’t these two a bit old looking to do 21 Jump Street? They don’t quite look like they’d fit in at a high school.
Hill would fit in perfectly in high school… as the fat, geeky kid who everybody picked on! I get the feeling this will be “unintentionally comedic.”
I like Channing Tatum well enough, but able to pass for a teenager? Um, maybe about TEN YEARS AGO….when he really was one. Hill, maybe, but still not perfect…
How about people who really DO look young – why aren’t they talking to Michael Angarano, Emile Hirsch, Anton Yelchin, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Mia Wasakowska, et al? They’d be much more believable and could pass for, say, 17 much easier than Channing Tatum…who doesn’t look a day under 25. If I saw Tatum in my school, the firsr thing I would think of would be “new gym teacher” not “new student”…
Jonah Hill, I know Peter DeLuise. Peter Deluise is a friend of mine. Jonah Hill, you are no Peter DeLuise.
Yes…. this directing choice makes sense.. (pause for laughter). I can see Sony is taking this very seriously and NOT just burning off a optional picture director commitment.
This is going to look like Superstar, where Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon were SUPPOSED to look ridiculous playing high school.
This is BS!!! Where is the originality at??? 21 jump St? Really?
Just waiting for a full length feature film of Cheers, Golden Girls(using young actresses) and 227.
Yes! Please keep producing tired old crap with new terrible actors that I have zero desire to see! YES!!!!!
